Cult Information Article
The following article was written by the editor. Please use caution while reading this article. It may be triggering.
It is important for the survivors’ movement to work together at times. But I also believe it is important for survivors to know who is safe (or safer) and who
isn’t. Due to the nature of MC, this is extremely important to talk about.
In any healthy situation, problems are discussed as openly and honestly as possible. If a climate of fear exists or is created by one person or group which
curtails this discussion, this makes the entire survivor movement less healthy.
Survivors may leave cults due to geographic changes in their lives. “…it is most often some of the alter personalities in survivors with…MPD that get reinvolved with the cult or a cult in another city, without the “birth person’s” conscious knowledge.” Sometimes survivors are programmed to return to the cult or another one later in life. (“Breaking the Circle” pg 31)
“…ritual abuse groups may share the following characteristics with coercive cults:
…dogma is more important than people, …a radical separation of good and evil,…a demand for purity,” members are watched all the time and their loyalty is tested “…the dogma is enacted through rituals,… regularly observe(d) rituals, rituals frequently invoke supernatural intervention,… staged events such as planned spontaneity… mystical manipulations, cults capitalize on members’ fear and ignorance,…a sense of separateness (is promoted) through an “us” and “them” mentality, … siege mentality with a paranoid view of the outside world, humor is forbidden, resistance of members is worn down through physical and emotional manipulations, a person’s identity is destroyed… to create a new one,” members give up their autonomy to be approved,” mind control is used to indoctrinate the victim into the group’s belief system, individuality is uniformly suppressed,… a well-defined hierarchy,” members are used to benefit leader(s), “mind control is used …to convert the victim to the group’s belief system,… to insure secrecy… and to carry out cult instructions.”(“Safe Passage to Healing” p 47 48)
Survivors in cults may be taught to feel superior to others. This creates feelings of alienation. They may be programmed how to behave outside the cult and who to have as friends.
Can people “unknowingly” reporting back to the original cult or other cults (online or offline)?
“Safe Passage to Healing” states that protector or maintainer alters, may sound like they are still cult active. Occasionally, this may be the case. Usually
they are not. Some alters could continue rituals on their own. Caryn StarDancer (p 157158) explains that when repressed alters begin to become conscious in recovery, survivors may experience “an increased drive to become cultactive…” The outside person might not know this. A survivor could receive “a phone call with a message which contains a programmed cue,” this triggers “an alter who… goes to a cult meeting.” Hours or days may be lost, and when the “host” is back, “it may only feel vaguely confusing.” Something may be wrong but the survivor “doesn’t know what… and that is a chronic feeling for many survivors. There is usually a story in the mind that “explains” what happened, and it doesn’t seem quite right…” Journalling can help alters become more aware of each other.
I believe it is very important to cut all contact with possible cult members and/or unhealthy groups that may have handlers (people that know the triggers and use them for their own or someone else’s benefit.)
My thoughts after reading “Traumatic Abuse in Cults”: A malevolent survivor group may insist on following rules without a discussion of the rules. The strong need for some survivors to be a part of something, anything, even if it may be harmful to the person. Ends justify the means. Doing immoral things to help “protect” the group. A malevolent survivor group may phrase their letters or end their letters with certain greetings meant to trigger people or remind members of their group
affiliation. A survivor’s alter may be in the group and not the host. This could be done via triggers. This explains how a survivor could be spying for the group, and not know it. This may be done with aliases. Survivors join the group to heal, but the malevolent survivor groups hidden goal could be to keep them from healing by “messing them up.” This survivor group may be controlled or may have been
formed by an outside group, cult or organization.
It is difficult to know when one is brainwashed, esp. if this is occurring in an alter. Many survivors of MC are very suggestible and may be easily mind
controlled through triggers or fear. Survivors are sometimes attracted to what is familiar from their past. Unfortunately, that may not always be a good thing.
Love bombing (being extra or overly nice to survivors) may set survivors up for being mind controlled. After survivors feel “welcomed” they could discuss their triggers which could later be used against them. It is very important to be sure
that a group is safe before joining or discussing important secrets with them. Many dangerous groups have bad records that many other survivors may know about, so check a group out throughly before joining. And even then be very careful and watch for the possible signs of a dysfunctional group or a cult like group.
There are no easy answers to healing. If someone is extremely open or overly friendly, there may be a hidden agenda.
Codependency characteristics can be used by some groups to revictimize survivors, making them emotionally dependent on the group. “Codependency can be defined as a condition marked by an inordinate reliance on person(s), thing(s), or activities, for personal well-being and self-esteem.” (“Breaking the Circle…” preface section.) This could include the use of guilt or strong emotions to bond a person to the group.
In S.M.A.R.T. Issue #8, I list Hassan’s (“Combatting Cult Mind Control”) criteria for mind control in a group.
Here is my interpretation of how these could be misused in a malevolent survivor (or other) organization.
The leader is always right and dissent is frowned upon or squelched.
The organization considers themselves a team and not allow others in, or other survivor orgs. are considered bad.
They are the best org. their team is the best.
The leader or leadership group makes all the important decisions, all must follow, public dissent is squelched.
Some people may take the name of the leader or imitate the leader.
In a malevolent org. those that follow the leader’s rules are complimented, those that dissent are told they are difficult or impolite.
Other orgs. or survivors are out to get the group, their opinions are dismissed as an attack, not acknowledged that they might have some validity.
People in the survivor org. are “buddies,” but way too much so. (See love bombing and codependency above.)
Now one can recover in the survivor org. but before they couldn’t or not nearly as well without the group.
Survivors and their orgs. may not even know that what they are doing is cultlike. A few orgs. and some people I know of are members of these groups. They seem to fit many or most of the criteria above.
One of my hopes in writing this is that people will read it and leave those groups. I have tried to make SMART and its conferences the opposite of the above. Please let me know if you ever see any of the above criteria in SMART or myself.

Article 1
The next two articles were sent to us by survivors. The opinions presented in these articles are solely those of the writers and may or may not be those of SMART or the editor.
Please note: the following article was sent to us by a survivor, Sherry Walls. All crimes are alleged. Please use caution while reading this. It may be triggering.
In April of 1998, I found out that my daughter had gone to court with my granddaughter’s father and given him ½ time custody of this 2½ year old child. The other ½ of the time was spent with my partner and myself. The baby had lived with us from birth. I had begun caring for the child while still in the hospital after birth when her mother would not. I allege the father of this child is a child molester. He was convicted in the past of attempting to endanger the welfare of a child and attempted burglary. I was terrified for my granddaughter. I began posting to two different list servers, one being Home For The Heart which is owned and run by Carrie Dawn, also known as Dawn W.
(Editor’s note: Sherry claims that CD sent her many Emails regarding what she should do, including telling her to lie and change her story. As of press time, SMART has not seen any written verification of this.)
Carrie Dawn disappeared for a while and I was on my own. I contacted many agencies, hired a lawyer, called child protection services, tried to see the judge who ordered the visits, called the police. Everywhere I went, I got the same reply, there was nothing we could do except be there for my granddaughter after she was allegedly abused. I just couldn’t live with the situation as it was. How
could I ever look my granddaughter in the eye and say I let this happen to her? The child had at that point gone to spend 10 days with her father and come home wanting her back, then stomach, then her genitals rubbed. My partner and I were
desperate. I called an airline and ordered plane tickets. We weren’t sure where we were going, but we were getting out of there.
(Editor’s note: Sherry claims that at the last minute CD sent an Email and told her her plan would not work, that if she really wanted safety, she should come to CD. She told Sherry to drive. As of press time, SMART has not seen any written verification of this.)
She claimed she had a connection with the “underground.” I didn’t know what CD had in mind, I only knew it involved a battered woman’s shelter and the underground. In desperation, we packed up and left. I tried to call CD one time while we were
traveling, but she was not home. We just kept traveling and tried to enjoy the trip.
About 10 days later I finally got CD on the phone. CD was in a panic, I couldn’t understand why. As far as I knew there was no time limit on what we were doing. She told me about articles in our local newspaper here in Vermont. I questioned her about how she got her hands on the article from all the way across the country. CD told me that someone had posted it on a list server. CD insisted that
we head for Idaho right away. She said we could be there by supper time. Then she said to dump the car and get on a bus. I told her we couldn’t just do that, the car was full of our belongings. CD insisted, she said to take it out into the woods, leave the car and then get on a bus to Idaho. I tried to tell her that if we did that the authorities would surely find the car and know what part of the country we were in. CD didn’t seem to be too concerned about the car being found, only that we arrive on a bus. We told her we would call in the morning.
The next morning we got up and left. My partner and I had decided that we were not going to leave the car, we would drive to Idaho. If CD had a problem with it, she would just have to get over it. Leaving the car was just too dangerous. When we
got out of the park we stopped and called CD again. She still seemed pretty panicky, but didn’t want us to leave the car. We made arrangements to call her and meet when we got to Idaho.
At about supper time, we arrived in Idaho and called CD. She said she was only about 15 minutes away, and that we should go ahead and order dinner and wait for her. CD didn’t show up at the restaurant for over an hour. When she got there, she claimed she had to “primp” to make a good impression. As soon as I saw CD, I knew I had seen her before, but couldn’t place her. She had lost a lot of weight, but the teeth gave her away. I just put it out of my mind and went on. CD explained to us that she had paid for one night at a local motel, she had gotten us a room back in a corner where we would not be observed by the motel staff. The room was rented in the name of C. and paid for by a credit card in the same name. CD
claimed this woman was her partner. She led us to the back door of the motel and helped us to get settled in. She then said she was going to the front desk to pay for an additional night in the room, claiming that she and I had a lot of talking to do. When CD came back to the room she gave us a $100 bill, she said it was money from MTC and that we were to use it for food for the next two days. We told CD that we had plenty of money and could pay our own way, she insisted that C. pay for the room and MTC for our meals.
That night CD took me out so that we could “get to know each other.” My partner and granddaughter were to stay at the motel, in the room. CD was driving a brand new car, she said her partner, C., had bought it for her. We drove around for a while and finally ended up at the lake. She walked me out the pier. It is at this point that I believe I was allegedly accessed by CD and several men. I have very little memory about that night. The only thing I really remember was that there was some importance to the floating 18th hole of the golf course, but I don’t know what it was. I have some very confusing memories about what I believe happened, all involved being allegedly programed in a very painful way, for a very specific reason.
The next day CD was supposed to show up in the AM. It was afternoon by the time he got there. She took us to a mall were there was a play area and insisted that we all get our hair cut, she took my granddaughter and supervised her hair cut, it wasn’t much. Then, we had to go and buy hair dye for my partner and me, so that the shelter people would believe I was young enough to be the mother rather than the grandmother. When we got back to the motel room. She then went over our story with us. She had told me to come up with a believable story to tell the people at the shelter. She said we could tell the truth to the people in the underground,
but not the shelter. The less people who knew the less chance we had of getting caught. She did not like the story we came up with. We tried to stick some what to the truth. She then allegedly gave us a story to tell. It was about a very violent husband how was very abusive and who had always been able to find me, my partner was my sister and we came from PA, not VT. It was a very elaborate story. It covered all the bases. After she left, we dyed our hair and went to bed.
The next day she was supposed to come and meet us in the morning and take us to a battered woman’s shelter in Washington. She didn’t show up till afternoon. We were terribly worried by the time she got there. By that night, we were in a battered woman’s shelter complete with a story about an extremely violent husband. It was not a story that either of us was comfortable with, but she insisted. My partner had a terrible time remembering our story. She couldn’t even remember the name CD gave her.
We spent the night at the shelter and the next day took my granddaughter to the play area at the local mall. When we got back to the shelter at about 7:30 P.M. there was a message for me to call CD. I called as soon as I could. She wanted me to meet her at a local hamburger stand at 8:00 P.M., she said to come alone, she had some paperwork I would need when we went into hiding. I agreed to be there, but wondered what possible paperwork she could have.
I got to the meeting place a little early, no one was there. I parked in the back. Slowly the parking lot filled, finally there was only one space left and I still
hadn’t seen CD. Then she appeared around the corner of the building and motioned me to come and park, which I did. CD had a large grocery bag folded down under her arm. I pulled the car up and parked, the minute I opened the door the FBI had me. They took me up next to the building and I could see CD standing there with the bag under her arm. I was shocked. I was taken to a jail. About ½ hour after I got there, my partner was brought in. We were allowed to sit together. My partner saw
all the FBI agents around and knew what had happened. My partner claims they took my granddaughter and arrested my partner with CD standing there.
The next day we were arranged. At the hearing, we were given papers that described our alleged crime.
(Editor’s note: Sherry claims that the papers stated that the FBI knew they were heading for Idaho and that they knew they were in the motel for the two days they were there. As of press time, SMART has not seen written verification of this.)
They did not say why they didn’t arrest us as soon as we got into town. We have gotten several sets of papers that describe Dawn W. as an alleged informant for the FBI. No one has ever been able to answer why they didn’t arrest us sooner, why they let us spend two days with CD, one of those nights I believe I was accessed badly. The FBI has described us as possibly going to murder my granddaughter, yet they did not arrest us at the first possible moment, they waited and left us with CD.
The final papers also said that the FBI had contacted CD the day of our arrest and told her that they knew that she was involved in our kidnaping of my granddaughter and that she then agreed to tell them where to find us. The paper did not use the
name Carrie Dawn. It used Dawn W. She was listed on the witness list as Dawn W.
When we were finally returned to Vermont and we tried to get out of prison to await trial we found out that the FBI considered us a flight risk and that they
were saying that Dawn W. allegedly claimed that she had been talking to me on a web site for battered women for 18 months and that I had never told her my true name, that I had always used the alias she gave me.
(Editor’s note: Sherry claims that CD claims that Sherry had consistently told her of a terrible violent husband and that she (CD) was helping her escape. Sherry claims this information appears in the court records. This made it appear that they had been planning this kidnaping for a long time, that it was not a reaction to the fathers receiving half time custody or the child allegedly wanting her
genitals rubbed after visiting him.)
(Editor’s note: Sherry claims that CD was an alleged informant who was working for the FBI through the Internet. As of press time, SMART has not seen any written verification of this.)
Many people on several lists knew at the time what was going on. The only person I ever told the child was mine was one survivor on a list I was on. Every other post I wrote supports my story. Many of those posts are still on my computer and can be read by anyone who wishes to.
I have no proof of being accessed at the hands of CD and her cohorts, but my partner has always wondered what happened that night. She thought I returned in a rather strange condition and couldn’t remember much about the night. CD wanted to take me the second night and my partner refused her, saying I needed to stay with her and my granddaughter. I’ve been working on this issue with my therapist for a while now and he believes I was accessed and given some kind of orders for the new millennium and that I was made to believe that my therapist was one of them and that I should never trust him, he would kill me if I continued to talk. My granddaughter ended up in Plattsburg, NY, a place where it is alleged that mind control experiments go on and much torture.
Article #2
Please note: all crimes are alleged and this article may be triggering.
My name is Kathleen Sullivan, although in the survivor community I use the pen name “Katherine.” I am the president of PARC-VRAMC, Inc. and am currently in college in our Human Services Specialist program while recovering from over 35
years of ritual abuse and mindcontrol trauma.
Part of my recovery has involved connecting with other survivors over the Internet. One of the women I “met” through a group, presented herself as “Carrie Dawn.” She told me she was a mental health professional who ran a large survivor’s Internet group. She said she’d already been contacted by over 11,000 survivors and prosurvivors. I was impressed. Through private Emails, we agreed to room together during a mindcontrol conference in October 1997 in Atlanta. We stayed up long into each night. She encouraged me to talk about how lonely I was; I believe she took advantage of this.
The Sunday after the conference ended, I took her to her terminal at the Atlanta Hartsfield airport. A male part came out in her, gripped a nerve in my shoulder, and allegedly gave me instructions to meet a group of men waiting for me in one of the rooms between the terminals and the main airport. In that room I was allegedly reaccessed, and later blocked out almost all that happened. I found
myself lost in the airport afterwards, distraught, and had my husband drive to get me, armed. I made it home without further problems, but was unable until after February 1999 to remember her part in the situation.
She told me her real name was Carrie H. (Another survivor recently informed me that her real name is Dawn W.) I met her again in person at a conference in the summer of 1998. Her list serve handler, was also there. As soon as I met him, I felt very alert and concerned. Even though he acted and talked like a little boy, I didn’t sense that he really was in a child alterstate. He seemed to be faking it. An item he was giving out started triggering my NASA Star Trek programming. I refused to accept one. I later saw him talking roughly with a female survivor in the hallway near a soda machine. At that time, he spoke in an adult voice.
One of the things we had discussed the year before, in Atlanta, was that if either of us remembered the other from the past, we would talk it over. She had told me that she had been part of the same international Aryan cult, Golden Dawn. She’d said she had a rental garage literally full of records, etc. she had taken from one of my “alleged” last owners, while she was living in Georgia. She said she wanted me to fly out to spend a week or so, to review the materials with her and determine which were of value.
After the Atlanta conference, she continued to push for me to fly out to visit with her and review her materials. I hesitated. Then I had my first memory of her. As a young adult, I had been in a government building where teenagers and adults were programmed and received classroom training.
I called Carrie to tell her I remembered her. I told her what it was about and we would work it out. Instead I believe she said, “You must be doing
transference.” I was stunned and dropped the subject, but I also began to back away from her. We still E-mailed back and forth. Other survivors told me that she was mentioning our friendship to get them to trust her more. That bothered me. Then I had another memory like the first. Same place, same people. I grew worried. Here she was, working with survivors, giving them advice and letting them tell very personal secrets to her.
I begged her to get into therapy. She said she couldn’t find a good counselor. I told her that I believed the list handler was dangerous. I pushed her to stop letting him facilitate her lists, since he had access to every E-mail! She finally agreed to take him off, but was extremely angry with me. I even told her his real name. That memory was later confirmed.
In late February 1999, I decided to confront Carrie by Email, sending copies to other survivors we both knew. I did not wish to embarrass her. I still wanted to believe she wasn’t lying, but was simply a goodhearted, dissociated person in severe denial. I wanted to believe that what she had done to me, years ago, was over.
She responded with an E-mail. She accused me of having done things to her that I had warned her she’d done, perhaps in alterstates, to me. She also accused me of things I later discovered other survivors believed she had done to them! (Her
second set of accusations made no sense until I heard from those women; then, I realized she may have mimicked what we said and wrote.)
More walls came tumbling down. I went through extreme mental and emotional withdrawal. I cried and cried. I went into a state of shock when other victims contacted me and told me what she’d done to them.
I have distanced myself as far from “Carrie,” MTC, and now MCF Forum, as I can. I must protect myself. I am more determined than ever to keep PARC-VRAMC separate from all other organizations, so that it cannot be taken over by the wrong people. I am working harder at paying attention to my “uhoh, this isn’t right” feelings and talking about them sooner, with my support network. I realize I am not immune what I have not remembered can be used to hurt me, again.
Poems
The following poems are from subscribers. Please use caution while reading. They may be triggering.
Survivors
Young faces dark circles
beneath eyes that are old used
without innocence
These are the children
who lost their childhood
to adult children
These are the children
who are the loners
who draw pictures
and write poetry
to relieve the anger
of crusty old wounds
oozing with pain
and tears backed up
behind dams of tension
and grief unshed for fear
that yet another mass
of horrid new memories
will be added
to the overflowing chambers
withing the mind to mingle with old memories
slipping out escaping rapidly
unexpectedly yet with great struggle
These are the children
with old eyes
These are the children
who struggle through thorn-riddled paths toward change in the world
These are the children who create change.

Captive Emotions
Screams in a bottle, captured when it was forbidden during terror and pain.
In a place of safety they are released in all of their chilling reality.
The jar of tears can no longer contain and they flow out like a flood. The storm of rage is scary.
a poison from trauma’s wound long overdue for healing.
Lisa S.
Tara’s Screams
Just a tot, so fair
caught in their hands and laid upon the cold stone.
She did not know what they planned to do, tied up she screams when she sees the knife.
Her white gown is stained in red, She haunts the woods and our memories, and we cannot bear to hear children scream.

“Researchers and clinicians believe that dissociation is a common, naturally occurring defense against childhood trauma…Faced with overwhelming abuse, it is not surprising that children would psychologically flee (dissociate) from full awareness of their experience.” “The dissociative spectrum (Braun, 1988) extends
from normal dissociation to polyfragmented DID. All of the disorders are trauma-based, and symptoms result from the habitual dissociation of traumatic memories.” “The dissociated memory is alive and activenot forgotten, merely submerged (Tasman & Goldfinger, 1991). Major studies have confirmed the traumatic origin of DID (Putnam, 1989, and Ross, 1989), which arises… as a result of severe physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse. Polyfragmented DID (involving over 100 personality states) may be the result of sadistic abuse by multiple perpetrators over an extended period of time.”

experiences… subjects reported the gradual emergence of a personal narrative that can
be properly referred to as “explicit memory”.”
