Issue 38 – May 2001

The purpose of this newsletter is to help stop secretive organizations and groups from abusing others and to help those who allege they have been abused by such organizations and groups.

This newsletter is not a substitute for other ways of recovering from ritual abuse. Readers should use caution while reading this newsletter. If necessary, make sure other support systems are available during and after reading this newsletter.

Research and Information from Studies

Below please find research that I believe may show the connection between abuse and a variety of disorders and problems survivors may sometimes have.

Psychological Abuse May Cause Changes in Brain – Psychiatric News – 3/02/01 – Clinical & Research News – By Joan Arehart-Treichel “it appears as if this psychological impact can hurt the temporal lobes, important for sound and spoken language, and the limbic system–the brain’s emotional processing center….it appears as if the psychological impact of childhood physical abuse can damage the corpus callosum–the major information pathway between the two brain hemispheres….the psychological impact ensuing from childhood physical abuse appears capable of damaging the cerebellar vermis, an area of the brain involved in emotion, attention, and the regulation of the limbic system….An overview of the findings by Teicher and his colleagues, as well as of the implications of these findings for psychiatry, was published in the fall 2000 issue of Cerebrum.” http://www.psych.org/pnews/01-03-02/abuse.html

Pathways mediating sexual abuse and eating disturbance in children. Wonderlich S, Crosby R, Mitchell J, Thompson K, Redlin J, Demuth G, Smyth J Int J Eat Disord 2001 Apr;29(3):270-279 “Sexually abused children reported higher levels of eating disorder behaviors, impulsive behaviors, and drug abuse than controls.”

Fear can interrupt the continuum of memory – Harvey P J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 2000 Oct Vol 69(4): 562 “Discusses how fear can interrupt the continuum of memory, as related in a personal experience of posttraumatic (car accident) amnesia characterized by memory gaps accompanied by remaining memories that were particularly vivid.”

Altered Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Responses to Provocative Challenge Tests in Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse – C. Heim, Ph.D., D. J. Newport, M.D., R. Bonsall, Ph.D., A. H. Miller, M.D. and C.B. Nemeroff, M.D., Ph.D. “Early adverse life events may predispose individuals to the development of mood and anxiety disorders in adulthood, perhaps by inducing persistent changes in corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) neuronal systems…. These findings suggest sensitization of the anterior pituitary and counterregulative adaptation of the adrenal cortex in abused women without major depressive disorder. On subsequent stress exposure, women with a history of childhood abuse may hypersecrete CRF, resulting in down-regulation of adenohypophyseal CRF receptors and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Am J Psychiatry 2001;158 575-581”

Early sexual abuse and low cortisol. King JA, Mandansky D, King S, Fletcher KE, Brewer J Psychiatry Clin Neurosci 2001 Feb; 55(1):71-4 “Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder precipitated by a stressful event that produces fear or terror in the individual. Post-traumatic stress disorder studies, particularly in early sexual abuse, have been associated with neuroendocrine dysfunction, most notably the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis….The present study shows that subjects who had been abused within the last couple of months had significantly lower cortisol in comparison to control subjects…The data suggest that children may have an impaired HPA axis after early trauma.”

Rorschach correlates of sexual abuse: Trauma content and aggression indexes. Kamphuis JH, Kugeares SL, Finn SE J Pers Assess Oct 75(2):212-224, 2000 “clients with definite sexual abuse scored significantly higher than clients known not to be sexually abused on J.G. Armstrong and R.J. Loewenstein’s (1990) Trauma Content index (TC/R)…Although TC/R was strongly associated with the presence and severity of sexual abuse, it could not discriminate sexually abused from nonsexually abused clients with great accuracy. The TC/R score is one factor among many that can be used to assess the validity of clients’ claims of past sexual abuse.”

Child sexual abuse and later disordered eating: A New Zealand epidemiological study. Romans SE, Gendall KA, Martin JL, Mullen PE Int J Eat Disord 2001 May; 29(4):380-92 “CSA women with ED (CSA+ED) were compared with CSA women without ED (CSA-noED) and with CSA women with anxiety and/or depression (psychiatric comparison group). RESULTS: Higher rates of EDs in women who have experienced CSA were confirmed in this study.”

Child sexual abuse as a predictor of psychiatric co-morbidity and its implications for drug and alcohol treatment. Jarvis TJ, Copeland J Drug & Alcohol Dependence 1997 Dec 49(1):61-69, 1997 “Explores the association between child sexual abuse (CSA) and psychological co-morbidity among 180 women (aged 16-69 yrs) receiving either drug and alcohol treatment or CSA counseling….Results show that Ss reported elevated levels of anxiety, somatisation, and dissociation but not depression. Higher rates of self-harm, eating disorders and sexual dysfunction were also reported by CSA survivors. Women with a history of both CSA and substance abuse were more likely to have attempted suicide than other women.”

Childhood sexual abuse and bulimic behavior in a nationally representative sample. Wonderlich SA, Wilsnack RW, Wilsnack SC, Harris TR Am J Public Health 86(8, Pt 1):1082-1086, 1996 “representative national sample of 1,099 US women… Findings suggest that childhood sexual abuse is a risk factor for bulimic behavior. Between one-sixth and one-third of the cases of significant bulimic disturbance could be attributed to childhood sexual abuse.”

Childhood sexual abuse and women’s substance abuse: National survey findings. Wilsnack S C, Vogeltanz ND, Klassen AD, Harris TR J Studies Alcohol May 58(3): 264-271, 1997 “national survey of women’s drinking, 1,099 US women (aged 21 yrs & older) were asked about sexual experiences occurring before age 18….Results… indicated that women with histories of CSA were significantly more likely than women without CSA histories to report recent alcohol use, intoxication, drinking-related problems and alcohol dependence symptoms; lifetime use of prescribed psychoactive drugs and illicit drugs; depression and anxiety; pain that prevented intercourse; and consensual sexual intercourse before age 15.”

Sexual abuse and sexual risk behaviors of minority women with sexually transmitted diseases. Champion JD, Shain RN, Piper J, Perdue ST West J Nurs Res 2001 Apr; 23(3):241-54 “Sexually abused women were more likely to have lower incomes, earlier coitus, STD history, currently abusive partners, new sex partners, anal sex, and bleeding with sex, placing them at increased risk for STD reinfection and HIV.”

A validational study of the Structured Interview of Symptoms Associated with Sexual Abuse (SASA) using three samples of sexually abused, allegedly abused, and nonabused boys. Wells R, McCann J, Adams J, Voris J, Dahl B Child Abuse Negl 1997 Dec 21(12): 1159-1167 “In comparison with the nonabused boys, the sexually abused boys were significantly more likely to demonstrate sudden emotional and behavioral changes, frequent stomach aches, more knowledge about sex and sexual activities than expected for their age, unusual aggressiveness toward playmate or toy’s private parts, crying easily, difficulty getting to sleep, and a change to poor school performance.”

Qualities of a Therapist article

This was sent to us by a survivor, T.S.

Someone who sees me as a person, not a “patient.”

Someone who respects the fact that I am informed, intelligent, and the one who has the last say on what’s right for me.

Someone with a sense of humor, not only to laugh with me, but to laugh at themselves occasionally.

Someone who will continue with me even if they’re not getting as much money as they would if my insurance hadn’t run out for the year.

Someone who walks with me in the healing journey, and who knows enough about being a therapist to be able to offer guidance, but not to control the process.

Someone who is honest.

Someone who genuinely cares about me and likes me (I can always tell when there is a real connection vs. seeing me as “just another client”). I need to feel that personal connection, like I matter to them.

Someone who accepts me no matter what I’m feeling or no matter what I say or how I say it.

Someone who has done their own healing so that they do what they do because they care about people, instead of being unhealed and “needing to be needed.”

Someone who knows their own boundaries and makes that clear to me, instead of not having boundaries and then blaming me for crossing them.

Someone who can listen to me when I’m angry with them, and not react right away.

Someone who is available in case of crisis, or even “mini-crisis.”

Someone who respects my spiritual beliefs.

Resources and Information

Please note: Listing of these resources does not necessarily constitute our endorsement of them. They are for educational value only and some may be heavy for survivors to read.

Please also note. Some of the conferences listed may not necessarily be safe for all survivors. S.M.A.R.T. recommends always bringing a support person to all conferences. If you are a survivor of mind control and/or ritual abuse, S.M.A.R.T. recommends that you try to bring a support person that is familiar with mind control techniques.

Survivor Resources

The pro-survivor news list is for those interested in receiving information about resources and research to help those recovering from ritual abuse and mind control. This list is for those that believe in the existence of recovered memory, mind control and ritual abuse. This is not a list for survivor support or sharing survivor stories and/or issues. Anyone with an acceptable user name will be able to become a member. However, posts will be moderated. This will be a public list with archives. To subscribe, go to http://www.egroups.com/subscribe/psnews or write psnews-subscribe@yahoogroups.com, questions write psnews-owner@yahoogroups.com (Please note: egroups is now yahoogroups.)

Pro-survivor list (an E-mailing list group) will help provide information for survivors of ritual abuse and mindcontrol. This is not a list for skeptics or those that do not believe in the existence of mind control or ritual abuse. If interested, please register at: http://www.egroups.com/subscribe/psl After registering, we will send you a questionnaire developed by list members to fill out. This questionnaire is to let prospective members know about the guidelines and policies of the list and to help us keep the list safe for survivors. (Please note: egroups is now yahoogroups.)

Harvard Society for Law & Public Policy, Inc. Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy – Spring, 1999 – 22 Harv. J.L. & Pub. Pol’y 523 The Guilty and the “Innocent”: an Examination of Alleged Cases of Wrongful Conviction from False Confessions by Paul G. Cassell – “According to the authors(Leo and Ofsche), in twenty-nine of these cases the false confession resulted in the wrongful conviction of an innocent person.” “examines nine of these twenty-nine cases in detail. Based on review of original trial court records and other similar sources, the part concludes that each of these nine persons were, in all likelihood, entirely guilty of the crimes charged against them.” “Leo and Ofshe rely in large measure on secondary sources for the descriptions of the evidence against the defendants in their collection….For many cases, court records are available only in the local courthouses where the trial took place, while media accounts are often readily accessible in computerized databases. Relying on secondary sources, however, poses the risk of inaccurate recounting of the evidence. Examining primary sources for the cases in Leo and Ofshe’s collection reveals that this is a very real problem.” “The problems with the subjective determination of “innocence” in the Leo-Ofshe collection, like similar problems elsewhere, suggests that reliance on second-hand sources combined with understandable enthusiasm for the enterprise of discovering miscarriages may produce more such cases than really exist.” “Only a relative handful of Leo and Ofshe’s cases would satisfy the criterion of undisputed wrongful conviction.”

British police discover more child abuse horror on internet – By Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor 2/21/01 “British detectives are trying to close a website showing pictures of a man eating a dismembered baby, further evidence of the extent of child abuse and exploitation published on the internet. Scotland Yard is talking with the FBI in the US in an effort to close the website, based in California, which has been linked with the ritual abuse of children.” http://www.independent.co.uk/news/UK/This_Britain/2001-02/abuse210201.shtml

Kingstons Say Family Persecuted – Toddler dies of injuries. Spokesman attacks reporting of incident – by Kevin Cantera – Salt Lake Tribune – 1/20/01 – “The girl fell from a chair while her 26-year-old baby sitter was in another room, said Elden Kingston, who said he is a spokesman for the family.” “During emergency surgery, with a police officer in attendance, a doctor said, “They beat . . . this girl,” according to court records. The doctor told police that the girl’s injuries “were consistent with blunt-force trauma.” In 1999, John Daniel Kingston, a prominent member of the 1,000-member clan, was convicted of second-degree felony child abuse after beating his 16-year-old daughter. The teen was punished after trying to escape a prearranged polygamous marriage to his brother, the girl’s uncle. The uncle, David O. Dark thoughts – Freud may have been right: people can suppress memories – “Michael Anderson and Collin Green of the University of Oregon in Eugene asked 32 people to memorise a list of 50 or so simple pairs of words…The volunteers were then presented with the first word and asked either to recall the second or banish it from their minds for four seconds. Volunteers were asked to suppress the second word between zero and 16 times. The researchers found that volunteers were much less able to recall words that had been repressed many times – even when they were offered money to remember.” http://www.newscientist.com/dailynews/news.jsp?id=ns9999519

Eighteen rats were given the drug. The brains of both rats and humans have a hippocampus, and the study is the first to show in mammals that new neurons are used in memory formation, though previous work has shown the connection in birds, the researcher Shors said.”

Dr. Richard Gardner: A Review of His Theories and Opinions on Atypical Sexuality, Pedophilia, and Treatment Issues by Stephanie J. Dallam, RN, MSN, FNP Please note: I do not agree with Gardner’s ideas. “Richard A. Gardner, M.D., is a prominent forensic expert with an extensive career of evaluating children, especially during custody disputes between parents.” “Gardner (1992, p. 588) does not believe in doing therapy with fathers who deny committing sexual molestation. If father desires treatment, the therapist should focus on enhancing his self-esteem. This is accomplished by helping him to appreciate that “there is a certain amount of pedophilia in all of us” and that “pedophilia has been considered the norm by the vast majority of individuals in the history of the world”(Gardner 1992, ppi.592-3).” “Gardner’s Views on Pedophilia – “The sexually abused child is generally considered to be the victim,” though the child may initiate sexual encounters by ‘seducing’ the adult.” “Gardner (1991, p. 118) suggests that Western society’s is “excessively moralistic and punitive” toward pedophiles.” Published in Jan/Feb 1998 (Vol 8, No. 1) issue of Treating Abuse Today. Credibility and further psychological problems of young children as witnesses in criminal justice procedures: A case study [article in German] Niebergall G, Sporer SL, Warnke A Z Kinder Jugendpsychiatr 1995 Mar 23:1 44-55 “The main emphasis is on general and specific credibility, identification of people associated with the crime, suggestibility and probabilities related to guessing, perceptual and memory performance, and minimization of emotional sequelae in children who are witnesses to violent crimes. The authors conclude that preschool children can be reliable witnesses in preliminary hearings and court proceedings.”

Smile, You’re On Scan Camera – by Julia Scheeres – 3/14/01 – When football fans learned that their faces were scanned and compared to mugshots of common criminals at this year’s Super Bowl, many were outraged…..In the United States, face scans are used by casinos to look for cheats; law enforcement to digitalize mug shots; welfare departments to look for double-dippers…. Israel’s Ministry of Defense uses facial scanning to monitor movement along the Gaza Strip….London uses them to remotely patrol the streets. Mexico and Uganda use them to register voters….The facial scans work by converting images into numerical codes that can be easily stored and searched in large databases….It …started with …the FERET program, a Department of Defense initiative in the early 1990s to determine the viability of using algorithms to measure faces. Do to Eric Olson’s Father? – by Michael Ignatieff – “for a quarter of a century, a close friend of mine, a Harvard classmate, has believed that the CIA murdered his father, a United States government scientist….On June 11, 1975, The Washington Post revealed that a commission led by Vice President Nelson Rockefeller had discovered that “a civilian employee of the Department of the Army unwittingly took LSD as part of a Central Intelligence Agency test” and “developed serious side effects.”” http://www.nytimes.com/2001/04/01/magazine/01OLSON.html?ex=987215818&ei=1&en=790

The Olson File – A secret that could destroy the CIA – by Kevin Dowling and Phillip Knightley – “in 1975 the Rockefeller Commission, …to examine the extent of the CIA’s illegal domestic operations, revealed that an unnamed army scientist had died after CIA experts, experimenting with mind-bending drugs, had secretly slipped him a dose of potent LSD. During the ensuing uproar, the scientist was identified as Frank Olson….CIA director, William Colby, held a lunch for Mrs. Olson and Eric in his office at the CIA, apologised and gave them the CIA file on the case. According to the file, Olson had suffered a “chemically-induced psychotic flashback” a week after he had been slipped the dose of LSD. So a CIA doctor, Richard Lashbrook, had been deputed to look after Olson until he was normal again.” The article discusses alternative theories to Olson’s death to the one commonly known. http://www.frankolsonproject.org/Articles/LondonMail.html

Is the reexperience of painful emotion therapeutic? Littrell J Clin Psychol Rev 1998 Jan;18(1):71-102 “Good supporting evidence is found for the effectiveness of behavioral exposure therapies where the duration of emotional exposure is carefully controlled, as well as for the salutary impact of talking or writing about trauma by normally functioning individuals. On the other hand, studies evaluating the impact of experiencing and expressing painful emotion in an unstructured fashion with clinical samples suggest that the process can be harmful.”
