Ritual abuse and mind control by Neil Brick This may be heavy for survivors. This was originally written for co-survivors.

Ritual abuse is severe traumatic abuse repeated over a long period of time, usually done when a child is between the ages of 0 – 6. It may unintentionally (as in the case of Sybil) create MPD (now called DID) or be used intentionally to create alter personalities, for sex slaves, as in the case of child porn and incest (to be able to call alters that will be able to perform necessary tasks), to create cult personalities (as in Satanic or Luciferian groups, but not exclusive to those groups.) It may also be used by governmental agencies, like the CIA, to create the “perfect” spy or assassin, one that doesn’t remember what they did in other alters. All of these cases are documented.

Mind control is a component of ritual abuse. It is used by the perpetrator to control the survivor. An alter will usually have a trigger or cue, similar to Pavlov’s dogs and the bell. Ritual abuse survivors can be triggered by many things, so it is important to use caution when talking to them. Cliches, colors, numbers, rhythms and sounds can all be used to trigger a survivor. Often before a survivor gets their first memories, if they have been programmed, there will be a layer of suicidal and self injurious programs. These programs have been installed to prevent the survivor from remembering the programs underneath. It is very important survivors find safe and knowledgeable therapists to work with. Survivors will usually have a great deal of trouble trusting people. Another problem is that some therapists may be cult members, and survivors can be retraumatized and brought back into the cult. So survivors are understandably very careful when looking for support systems.

Another thing to remember is that survivors may still be in the cult and not know it. Certain alters could be reporting back to the cult and/or be in cult rituals and the other daytime personalities may not know this. This could be compared to a computer with different disk drives. One way to gauge a survivor’s level of healing is their clarity of thought and their emotional maturity. Survivors that may be “all over the place” may still be in the group. Survivors that are still in contact with cult members, family, friends or a spouse or partner from the past, may still be in the cult or at least are probably being triggered intentionally or unintentionally and are being destabilized emotionally.

How this impacts survivor’s daily lives

Depending on the level of healing of the survivor, survivors of ritual abuse will usually be very addictive. Certain emotions may not be expressed by the daytime alter groups, except in “explosions” like anger, meanness, sadness and so on. These emotions were compartmentalized during the abuse so the survivor could survive. They may also have been used by the cult to create assassins and other cult roles. Survivors may quickly switch from one emotion or alter to another, especially late at night when cult alters are more likely to be triggered. Survivors in early recovery, due to the destabilization of their alter system, may not be able to hold jobs or maintain safe living situations. This is due in part to extreme emotional swings, programming coming up that causes self-destructive behaviors, extreme lack of trust, and very disorientating experiences, like memory problems, spaciness (dissociative experiences) and the cult trying to access them to either discredit them, stop their memories from coming back, cause the survivor to injure themselves so they are unable to remember or get the survivor fully back in the cult again.

How to help survivors

The most important thing is to listen sympathetically but with good boundaries. Role modeling empathy and good boundaries is crucial for survivors, especially for child alters. Most survivors did not see much of this and were probably unable to internalize it sufficiently to function successfully socially due to the severe trauma they received. A support person’s boundaries may need to expand at times, when it appears the survivor is sincere and not manipulative and is really trying to heal and reach out. You may want to paraphrase (in a sincere way) what the survivor has said, to help them integrate their thoughts (they may not remember what they said). It is important not to reinforce negative or self injurious programming. It is also important not to deny the survivor’s experience. One could say, “I am sorry that this happened to you, it is amazing that you were able to survive it. I am glad you have the courage and strength to share this with me.” This should be sincere. Survivors are very sensitive to tone of voice and words, this is how they survived. Survivors of ritual abuse are usually very intelligent. This is shown by the research. Those that aren’t may go psychotic and/or be killed by the cult.

Survivors of ritual abuse can be extremely needy, like small children, which makes sense since they contain many underdeveloped young child alters. Understanding and love can help them heal and grow. They may not be able to understand that other people have needs, like not being abused or that other people need breaks, but they can learn this, through appropriate role models, like yourselves

There are therapists that work with survivors that you may be able to use as support. Due to the extreme nature of the emotions and memories, I recommend that co-survivors have regular support themselves, daily if they have abuse issues and definitely weekly to debrief with other people and therapists.

Masonic school’s future in doubt – After $6.9 million paid, convention to decide fate of FW facility 09/20/02 – By Todd Bensen – Fort Worth – “The Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas may be forced to close its Masonic Home and School because of a financial crisis caused in part by at least $6.9 million paid to settle lawsuits alleging child sex abuse at the school….The lawsuit alleged that school and Masons leaders “had a significant history of documented child sexual abuse at their facility dating as far back as the 1970s” and refused to seek criminal charges “in every confirmed instance of sexual abuse/assault of children residing at the Masonic Home.” During the 1980s and ’90s, two sexual predators and “numerous other child abusers” were hired despite documented histories of child sexual abuse or other misbehavior, the lawsuit contended. The employees were retained even after school officials learned that they were victimizing children, according to the lawsuit. McHugh is the only therapist on the lay council. This makes his participation especially significant, because other members may rely on his presumed expertise. Because he frequently testifies on behalf of accused molesters, doubts may be raised about the council’s desire to truly solve the problem. McHugh…is the man whose report to the court in one case stated that a defendant’s harassing phone calls were not obscene – including the call that detailed a fantasy of a 4-year-old sex slave locked in a dog cage and fed human waste. At least eight men have been convicted of sexually abusing Maryland children while under treatment at the “sex disorders” clinic McHugh runs at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine – abuse the doctors did not report, citing client confidentiality. When Maryland law was changed to require that doctors report child molestation, the clinic fought it and advised patients on how to get around the law. The memo to patients suggested that molesters report their pedophilic activities to their lawyers, who could in turn tell staff; attorney-client privilege would then protect the molesters from being reported. Ex-Priest Arrested on Sex Charges By Sandra Marquez – Los Angeles (AP) – A former priest who was moved from parish to parish after admitting to Roman Catholic Cardinal Roger Mahony that he molested young boys was arrested Wednesday. Former parish priest Michael Baker was charged with 13 counts of child molestation for incidents involving several victims from 1977 to 1985, said Sgt. Dan Scott. In 1986, Baker told Mahony that he had molested young boys and was reassigned to several parishes after attending a treatment center for pedophile priests.” From AOL 9/25/02

from LMS Priest Pleads Guilty to Stealing Nearly $100,000 From Queens Parish By Anthony DePalma “Roman Catholic priest from Queens who was accused of serious misdeeds by a parochial school principal pleaded guilty yesterday to stealing nearly $100,000 from his former parish to pay for a time share in Mexico, a luxury car and trips to a gay resort in Florida, among other personal expenses…Mr. Riopelle said Father Thompson also denied charges that he paid extortion to a gay lover whom he allowed to live in the church’s rectory, as the school principal, Barbara Samide, contended. Mrs. Samide, 39, had estimated that as much as $300,000 in funds belonging to the church and school could be missing, based on what accountants had told her. Mr. Riopelle acknowledged that Father Thompson had used money from the collection plate to pay for trips to the Blue Dolphin, a gay resort in Fort Lauderdale where clothing is optional…..Mrs. Samide told investigators that Father Thompson threatened to fire her if she tried to stand in his way. She filed a sexual harassment suit against him in June and recently amended the complaint to include allegations of physical abuse and sexual assault. Retired Priest Taken Into Custody – Los Angeles (AP) – “…was arrested Friday in Alaska while on a world cruise…Rucker is among four Southern California priests arrested this week in the first criminal cases brought in Los Angeles and Orange counties….Two others were charged with molesting boys between 1977 and 1987 and another was arrested for investigation of molesting a girl who authorities say gave birth to his child in the 1970s. Authorities allege Rucker molested seven girls in Los Angeles County from 1947 to 1979. He was charged…with 23 felony counts of committing lewd acts with children under age 14, and if convicted could face up to 26 years in prison.” From AOL 9/28/02

Jesuits Settle Case With Abused Men – Courts: Society of Jesus will pay two mentally retarded victims, who worked at a Bay Area retreat center, a total of $7.5 million. 9/5/02 By Glenn F. Bunting “The California Province of the Society of Jesus agreed Wednesday to pay a total of $7.5 million to two mentally retarded men who said they were sexually abused for years by Jesuits at a retreat in Northern California….The lawsuit, filed June 19, 2001, in Santa Clara County Superior Court, alleged that four Jesuits subjected the two victims to repeated acts of sodomy, molestation and false imprisonment for “as long as 30 years” at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center.” http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-settle5sep05.story

O’Donnell’s departure from the priesthood in 1986 left a Catholic parish and the Spokane psychology community seething….Despite a documented history of child molestation, he faced no criminal charges and hadn’t even been defrocked….Bishop William Skylstad and his staff acknowledged the Spokane Diocese knew of multiple instances of alleged molestation before O’Donnell was sent from active ministry to sexual deviancy treatment in 1976.” http://www.spokesmanreview.com/news-story.asp?date=082402&ID=s1205303

Spokane bishop, next in line to head bishops’ conference, at center of abuse crisis 9/21/02 By Nicholas K. Geranios, AP Spokane, WA 9/21/02 – “Eight men, who were boys at Catholic parishes in the Spokane Diocese during the 1970s and 1980s, have alleged that O’Donnell molested them or participated in sexually motivated behavior. The allegations became public through news articles. The victims contend the behavior began during O’Donnell’s first year as a priest, in 1971, and continued through 1986, his last year of active ministry, the Spokesman-Review reported. During that time, the newspaper reported, O’Donnell was moved among seven parishes and underwent two lengthy diocese-paid treatment sessions for sexual deviancy.”

NYC Suit Names Top Clergy in Coverup By Sara Kugler NY(AP) – A $300 million lawsuit accuses top clergy in Brooklyn’s Roman Catholic Diocese of covering up allegations of sexual abuse by shuffling the accused priests from parish to parish. The suit alleges that at least 43 children were abused from 1960 to 1984, and that the diocese tried to hide the attacks by transferring priests. Thirteen priests were named in the lawsuit, filed Tuesday. The plaintiffs, who ranged in age from 7 to 17 when they allegedly were abused, said attacks ranged from fondling to sodomy and occurred on church altars, in rectories, school stairwells, priests’ homes and – in one alleged case – at Shea Stadium during a Mets game. The suit also names Bishop Thomas Daily, head of the diocese that serves 1.6 million Catholics in Brooklyn and Queens. The suit alleges that he knew about the abuse. The letter campaign focused on two of the 150 sessions to be presented at the conference. It is spear-headed by a specific organization (the FMSF), mostly composed of those accused of abusing their own children, whom believe there is no such thing as repressed memories of childhood abuse, that there is an epidemic of “false memories” by those who report being abused in their childhood (hence their name, the “False Memory Syndrome Foundation”), that dissociation does not exist, and that most psychotherapy techniques should be eliminated. We have dealt with exposing the myth of this “syndrome” for many years, and there are excellent books and articles showing the fallacy of their arguments…The program includes…over 150 presentations), including the two dealing with issues involved in ritualistic abuse. The letter states that “ritual abuse” does not occur (along with other misinformation), and that the credibility of this conference should be questioned because two such presentations are listed. The fact is that there are victims of ritualistic abuse, and that such forms of maltreatment are recognized by mental health and law enforcement. Sexual Abuse Tied to Psychological Problems in Men – 9/26/02 – New York (Reuters Health) – “Men who were sexually abused as boys or as adults often experience serious psychological consequences in later life, including an increased likelihood of trying to kill or harm themselves, a UK study suggests. Researchers found that of nearly 2,500 men attending 18 medical practices, those with a history of sexual abuse were more likely than other men to report mental health, sexual or substance abuse problems. Among the 150 men who said they’d been sexually abused as children, 62% reported at least one such problem, as did 56% of the 69 men who said they’d been molested in adulthood-considered to be after age 16. He cited an Otago University study of more than 2000 women which found that those who had been sexually abused were five times more likely than the rest to have been admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Thirty-seven studies published between 1981 and 1995 involving 25,367 people were included. Many of the studies were published in 1994 (24; 65%), and most were done in the United States (22; 59%)….The analyses provide clear evidence confirming the link between CSA and subsequent negative short- and long-term effects on development….The results of the present meta-analysis support the multifaceted model of traumatization rather than a specific sexual abuse syndrome of CSA. Hypnosis found to alter the brain: Subjects see color where none exists By William J. Cromie “People have been hypnotized to see color where only shades of gray exist, and to see gray when actually looking at brightly colored rectangles. That result ….comes from a tightly controlled scientific experiment done at a Harvard University medical facility. How child abuse and neglect damage the brain By Josh Kendall, Globe Correspondent, 9/24/02 “….These new neurobiological findings show that trauma – physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect – dramatically affects both the structure and chemistry of the developing brain, thus causing the behavioral and learning problems that plague about three-quarters of the children mired in the child welfare system. But the good news is that these brain changes aren’t necessarily permanent….published in The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences in 1993, Teicher linked abuse to brain wave abnormalities. Reviewing the records of 115 consecutive admissions to a child and adolescent psychiatric hospital, Teicher found brain wave abnormalities in 54 percent of patients with an abuse history, but in only 27 percent of nonabused patients. And 72 percent of the patients in the sample with a history of both physical and sexual abuse had these neurological abnormalities. As a rule, Teicher said, the greater the severity of the abuse, the greater the impact on brain function. And the relationship of the perpetrator to the child also matters: “Sex abuse by a family member is worse than abuse by a priest or a baby-sitter.” Several studies now document that abuse damages key brain structures such as the cortex, which is associated with rational thinking, and the hippocampus, which helps process memories and emotions. Both brain regions are critical for learning. In a study published in the same journal in 1998, Teicher and his colleagues used brain scans to compare 15 child victims of severe abuse with 15 healthy volunteers. Emory researcher claims stress-induced changes in brain can create psychiatric disorders – Years of research come together in a book explaining how stress affects the brain Atlanta – “Emory University psychiatrist J. Quote from page 19-20 “Studies using large samples of the national population showed that 16% of women were sexually abused (rape, attempted rape or sexual molestation) at some time before their 18th birthday (McCauley et al. 1997)…25 million women were sexually assaulted in this country, and probably have as many men….one million children are abused in this country every year.” SMART disagrees with the author’s conclusions on false memory and ritual abuse. His conclusions on false memory for traumatic memory appear to be derived from studies on nontraumatic unrepressed memory. His conclusions on one case pertaining to ritual abuse memories, which by his own admonition are based on his beliefs due to his experience in the field and feelings, are not based not on data and legal cases. Captivity & The Stockholm Syndrome – by Sara Lambert “A child living with abusive parents is, in effect, their hostage….Utterly trapped in this way, the child must do whatever she can to survive. Her existence depends on it. This child is in the same situation as battered wives and hostages of terrorists. As such she, like them, is vulnerable to developing something called “The Stockholm Syndrome,” which basically means that she comes to identify with her perpetrator. There are four criteria which lead to the development of Stockholm Syndrome in a long-term captive. Her life is threatened by her captor, and she believes the captor is capable and willing to carry out this threat. …She can not escape, so her only hope is that her captor will not kill her – and furthermore she hopes that her captor will feed and shelter her and provide for other essential needs, because otherwise these needs will not be met….She is isolated from outsiders so that the only information and perspective on reality she is getting is from her captor…..The captor seems to show her some kindness occasionally.” http://www.m-a-h.net/inkdroppings/sl-captivity.htm

Researchers Find Clues Linking Child Abuse to Addiction “A five-year study conducted by researchers at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass., is providing a better understanding of the link between child physical and sexual abuse and subsequent substance abuse by victims. Carl Anderson, Ph.D., research associate in McLean’s Developmental Psychiatry Research Laboratory and Brain Imaging Center, and colleagues found that repeated sexual abuse affects the blood flow and function of a key brain region related to substance abuse, the cerebellar vermis.
