Catholic Priest Involved in N.Irish Bombing – Police Londonderry, Northern Ireland (Reuters) 12/20/02 – “British ministers and the Roman Catholic Church may have colluded to cover up the involvement of a priest in one of Northern Ireland’s worst atrocities…a new probe had concluded a priest was involved in the 1972 Claudy bombings in which nine people died, and that members of the British government and church hierarchy knew of his IRA links. “In a search of 1972 papers, information has been found which clearly indicates that a parish priest in the south Derry area was a member of the provisional IRA and was actively involved in terrorism.”

from LMS Ex-priest jailed for assaulting schoolboys Ananova 1/21/03 “A former Irish Roman Catholic priest has been jailed for a year, after being convicted of assaulting two schoolboys. from LMS Jailed priest had spell as head of children’s charity by Helen Studd, Dominic Kennedy and Ruth Gledhill 12/27/02 “The Roman Catholic Church made the paedophile priest Michael Hill head of a children’s charity and then dismissed him after several months in the post…The 68-year-old priest is serving his second jail sentence, having been convicted of molesting a total of nine boys aged 10 to 14 between 1969 and 1987. Ten charges, including abuse of a girl in 1959, remain on file. The leader of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy- O’Connor, has struggled to explain why he gave Hill a job as a chaplain at Gatwick airport despite warnings from parents that the priest was a danger to children. Pope given priests `sex time bomb’ warning 30 years ago by Roger Dobson and Maurice Chittenden in The Sunday Times – 12/23/02 “The present Pope was among several Catholic bishops warned in a secret report more than 30 years ago that the church faced a potential “psychosexual” time bomb in the priesthood. The report, which foreshadows the scandals over sexual abuse of children which have erupted in the church in recent years, was prepared for a synod of bishops at the Vatican in 1971. Its authors estimated that a quarter of clerics had psychiatric difficulties and most were emotionally immature….unpublished report by Dr Conrad Baars, a Dutch-born Catholic psychiatrist from Minnesota, based on the records of 1,500 priests treated for mental problems. Baars reported that “psychosexual immaturity expressed in heterosexual or homosexual activity was encountered often. Virtually all of these priests were…suffering from a severe to moderate frustration neurosis”. The report, The Role of the Church in the Causation, Treatment and Prevention of the Crisis in the Priesthood, estimated that less than 15% of all priests in western Europe and North America were emotionally fully developed. Of the rest, 20-25% had serious psychiatric difficulties that often showed themselves in alcoholism; 60-70% suffered from lesser degrees of emotional immaturity. Baars made 10 recommendations, including better vetting of applicants to the priesthood. None were implemented.”

from LMS Child-sex law in rare test 01/21/03 By Tony Stickley “…is facing around 36 sex charges for acts allegedly committed in this country and on one of the Pacific Islands. Eight young complainants are involved, six of them boys. Some of the counts are laid under a section of the Crimes Amendment Act that was introduced in 1995 to stamp out sex tours by New Zealanders to places such as Thailand and the Philippines. It means the same penalties can be imposed as if the offences were committed in this country. Under the legislation, people who organise sex tours to exploit overseas youngsters can also be jailed for up to seven years.”

SJC considers statute of limitations in clergy abuse cases 2/6/03 Boston (AP) “The state’s highest court heard arguments…on whether a lawsuit brought by a woman who claimed she was abused by a priest as a teenager more than four decades ago should at least be heard by a jury under the state’s statute of limitations. State law gives a person three years to file a lawsuit after they turn 18, but the law allows people more time if they did not make the connection between the alleged abuse and damage suffered as a result of it until later. The case could have ramifications in other church sexual abuse lawsuits.”

from LMS Md. bills seek to lengthen limit on filing of sex-abuse civil suits – Current law requires victim to initiate action by age 21 By John Rivera 2/9/03 “…victims’ advocates are pushing the Maryland General Assembly to lengthen the statute of limitations for filing civil suits against abusers. Critics have long argued that Maryland’s law, which requires a child who has been sexually abused to file suit by age 21, is too restrictive…A bill sponsored by Del. Brian K. McHale, a Baltimore Democrat, would allow a sexual abuse victim to file a civil suit within a year after the resolution of a criminal case.”,0,2906635.story?coll=bal%2Dlocal%2Dheadlines

Sexual abuse suit dismissed against school 1/10/03 by Linda Stein “Trenton – A former student at the American Boychoir School in Princeton Borough who sued the school over sexual abuse he allegedly suffered there as a child was devastated to learn that a judge has dismissed that lawsuit he filed against the school…..In his 40-page opinion, Sabatino said the Charitable Immunity statute protects nonprofit corporations, religious and educational organizations from liability for damages “for the negligence of any of its agents,” provided the injured person is a “beneficiary.”….However, the school had previously settled two other lawsuits with similar allegations, one for $850,000.”

Priest resigns amid theft probe – AP, 1/13/03 Merrimack, N.H. – “A priest has resigned after he became the target of an investigation into the theft of money from the Christmas Eve collection box. N.H. Bishop: Some Priest Sex Less Serious 12/23/02 Concord, N.H. (AP) – “Questioned under oath about the church abuse scandal, New Hampshire’s bishop suggested that it is less serious for a priest to have sex with someone from outside the parish than with a parishioner. In depositions this fall, Bishop John B. McCormack said he knew the Rev. Roland Cote had had sex with a teen-age boy but noted that the boy was not a parishioner. “You know, one is an activity where you have a trusted relationship with a parishioner. The other is an activity where you’re away from the parish and you’re off on your own,”‘ McCormack said in depositions obtained by …AP… “I’m very concerned about that; he was a young person. But it’s quite different from being with a parishioner.”,1282,-2268335,00.html

16 priests named for first time in sexual abuse lawsuits At least three still active; total of accused at 130 by Michael Rezendes, Matt Carroll, 1/30/03 “The new lawsuits, filed on behalf of 70 new alleged victims, include charges of rape, attempted rape, and fondling of minors against 40 priests and a former church worker who is believed to be a deacon…Also named as defendants in some of the suits are two former auxiliary bishops in Boston, Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin of the Hartford archdiocese and Bishop Daniel A. Hart of the Norwich, Conn., diocese. They bring to eight the number of bishops, including Cardinal Bernard F. Law, who have been accused of negligence while they supervised the abusive priests. Law resigned Dec. 13, but the seven other bishops all head their own dioceses. …”

from LMS Files: Cardinal tried to help accused man get ordained by Robin Washington and Tom Mashberg 2/5/03 “Top aides to Bernard Cardinal Law outlined a plan to pave the way to priesthood for a seminarian hit with sexual abuse allegations, despite church rules prohibiting accused candidates from becoming ordained…The internal memos indicate Law and his deputies – including Msgr. Michael Smith Foster, the Boston Archdiocese’s top canon lawyer – knew of multiple allegations against Pope John XXIII seminarian Mark Doherty but nonetheless acquiesced in allowing him to be ordained in the Diocese of Charlotte, N.C. “After consultation with my canonical advisors, I write to suggest that the easiest way for this to go forward would be simply to wait out the necessary five years and then proceed if you so decide that way,” Law wrote to Bishop William G. Curlin on Aug. 23, 1999….The Rev. Francis Murphy, another Boston “lend-lease” priest, who was accused of molestation and child pornography in Alaska.”

from LMS Former Law aide was concerned about Geoghan’s future, not past By Kathleen Burge, 2/5/03 “After learning that the Rev. John J. Geoghan had admitted molesting seven boys from the same family, a deputy to Cardinal Bernard F. Law said he was bothered more by what Geoghan might do than what he had done.”(Bishop Robert J. Banks)

Church board dismissed accusations by females By Thomas Farragher and Matt Carroll 2/7/03 “Records made public yesterday detailing alleged sexual misconduct by six priests suggest that women who complained that they had been assaulted as girls often received dismissive treatment by a church review board.”

Bishop often sided with priests in abuse cases – Records show McCormack brushed aside accusations By Thomas Farragher and Matt Carroll, 1/26/03 “…McCormack’s penchant for protecting priests in trouble trumped his new policy. Six weeks after its adoption, he was seeking an exemption for the Rev. Raymond C. Plourde. McCormack thought Plourde should remain as pastor of his Newburyport parish even though he had admitted to molesting a 12-year-old boy. An archdiocesan review board sharply disagreed. “For the good of the church,” it concluded, “he priest must resign.” Plourde became a convent chaplain until his retirement last year….Discretion, the records make clear, was the key. His guiding principle appeared to be the avoidance of public scandal.”

from LMS Bishop tells of shielding priests – McCormack says aide’s plea ignored By Michael Rezendes and Stephen Kurkjian 1/9/03 “It was 1994 and the Boston Archdiocese was being deluged with complaints that scores of its priests had sexually molested hundreds of children. But the Rev. John B. McCormack, then the top church official handling the complaints for Cardinal Bernard F. Law, insisted on shielding the identities of accused priests from unsuspecting parishioners – despite the repeated pleas of his top aide who fielded complaints about more than 100 priests.”

from LMS Boston Church Leaders Refused to Tell Parishioners of Abuse By Pam Belluck Boston, 1/8/03 — “In the Shanley case, Bishop McCormack handled a 1985 letter from a woman in Rochester, N.Y., who complained that Father Shanley said in a speech, “When adults have sex with children, the children seduced them.” In his deposition, the bishop said he believed Father Shanley’s explanation that he had been misunderstood.”

Lawyers for Boston Archdiocese Subpoena Alleged Victims’ Therapists – Boston 1/17/03 – “Lawyers for the Boston Archdiocese, which offered to pay for counseling for people who say they were abused by priests, have begun issuing subpoenas to the therapists to get details about the sessions. The subpoenas issued this week require therapists to answer questions under oath about the counseling, a move that has outraged alleged victims and their lawyers.”,2933,75918,00.html

from LMS Ex-vicar of Boston concedes he erred By Michael Rezendes and Thomas Farragher, 1/14/03 “When the Rev. Paul R. Shanley resigned his position at a Newton church and moved to a California parish, it fell to Bishop Robert J. Banks, then the top administrator in the Boston Archdiocese, to write a 1990 letter assuring California church officials that Shanley was a priest in good standing. But in pretrial testimony released yesterday, Banks acknowledged that when he wrote the letter, he had been told of allegations that Shanley had spoken in favor of sex between adults and children and had allegedly initiated a conversation about sadomasochism with a patient while serving as chaplain at McLean Hospital…”At the time I wrote the [1990] letter, there was no obvious indication that Fr. Shanley had been in serious difficulty with the archdiocese years before,” Banks wrote to his parishioners….But Banks never said – either in his 1990 letter or his more recent letter to his parishioners – that he had personally reviewed 1985 correspondence from a Rochester, N.Y., woman who said she had a tape recording of a speech in which Shanley endorsed sex between adults and children and said that children were typically the seducers in such relationships.”

The Boston Files By Rita Ciolli and Joseph Mallia “In 1995, Bishop William F. Murphy, then the second-highest ranking official in the Archdiocese of Boston, faced a grave problem: One of his priests was accused of sexually molesting a boy at a church-run juvenile detention center. Murphy decided to allow the Rev. C. Melvin Surette to remain active and then gave the cleric $14,000 to start a job bank to find work for other priests accused of abusing children. Murphy also gave Surette an allowance to live in private housing and extra money for a car and parking expenses. The accuser, who was 16 at the time of the alleged abuse, received a $50,000 settlement.”,0,3547218.story

Lennon, the interim leader of the Archdiocese of Boston, attended a two-hour meeting on the fate of an accused priest – even though Lennon publicly denied having any role in the case. A memo in the file of Msgr. Michael Smith Foster places Lennon and six other clerics at a Sept. 13 meeting “to discuss new allegations against (Foster) of sexual misconduct with a minor.”

Newman of Marblehead, who represents 17 alleged Paquin victims…”

from LMS A ‘classic misuse of power’ Children of woman who died in affair with priest speak out By Stephen Kurkjian and Walter V. Robinson, 12/29/02 “By the time Needham police arrived at the modest split-level home at about 5 a.m., the 41-year-old woman was dead….Now, the four siblings know from church records that their mother, who was severely depressed, was a victim of yet another priest whose sexual misconduct was overlooked by his superiors. They know that the Rev. James D. Foley began a long and destructive affair with her after she went to him for counseling in the early 1960s. They also know that Foley was with their mother that night in 1973, that he put his clothes on and left when she passed out from the pills, and that she died naked and without help – just a mile and a half from Glover Memorial Hospital….they also cannot comprehend why Cardinal Bernard F. Law and Bishop John B. McCormack decided to keep Foley’s secret and return him to a parish after they learned in 1993 how their mother died. The bishops’ principal concern, according to the documents: That Foley’s misconduct might become public.”
from LMS Priest details longtime affair Tells four children of the woman who died that he’s sorry By Stephen Kurkjian, 1/31/03 “The Rev. James D. Foley, who fled when the Needham woman with whom he was having an affair took a fatal overdose in 1973, …two of whom he may have fathered ….Foley disclosed the affair and the fatal overdose to Cardinal Bernard F. from LMS Accused priests were often on Law’s calendar By Michael Rezendes, Sacha Pfeiffer 1/10/03 “…two days after meeting with Keohane, Law wrote a letter to Geoghan informing him that he was being reassigned as a parish priest to St. Julia Church in Weston…”I am confident that you will render fine priestly service to the People of God in St. Julia Parish,” Law wrote….The entries do not indicate whether Law kept every appointment, but they do show Law had scheduled meetings with more than 35 priests who had been, or would be, formally accused of sexual misconduct – a pattern that seems to contradict pretrial testimony in which he repeatedly described his role in supervising accused priests as limited.”

from LMS Albany Diocese Quietly Paid Man Who Pressed Abuse Claim by Daniel J. Wakin “Bishop Howard J. Hubbard of Albany quietly paid more than $225,000 last year to a sexual abuse victim who was pressing further allegations that priests from the diocese had molested him when he was a boy. The man and the diocese disagree on whether the money was intended to end his claims and keep him quiet, or was the charitable work of a church assisting a member in need.”

1,200 Priests in Sex Abuse Cases (AOL) New York AP 1/12/03 – “Since the Roman Catholic church became embroiled in a sex abuse scandal a year ago, more than 1,200 priests in nearly every diocese in America have been accused of sexually abusing children, The New York Times reported. A survey conducted by the Times through Dec. 31 found that 4,268 people have claimed publicly or in lawsuits that priests abused them in the past six decades. The Times survey, relying on court records, news reports, church documents and interviews, found that 1,205 priests, or 1.8 percent of all priests ordained from 1950 to 2001, had been accused of abuse.”

Trail of Pain in Church Crisis Leads to Nearly Every Diocese “But the research also suggested that the extent of the problem remains hidden. In dioceses that have divulged what they say are complete lists of abusive priests — under court orders or voluntarily — the percentages are far higher. In Baltimore, an estimated 6.2 percent of priests ordained in the last half-century have been implicated in the abuse of minors. In Manchester, N.H., the percentage is 7.7, and in Boston it is 5.3.”

Lawyer says US bishop destroyed records of abusive priest J. M. Hirsch AP Manchester, New Hampshire 1/7/03 “The former bishop of New Hampshire destroyed church records in the late 1980s that detailed sexual abuse of children by two Roman Catholic priests, according to court records. The records indicate that Odore Gendron, the bishop of the Diocese of Manchester from 1975 to 1990, destroyed documents in one case at the request of the accused priest and in the other at the request of a facility treating a priest for sexual misconduct…Gendron did destroy the documents in question because they were private medical records and were made available to the diocese only on condition they be destroyed. He said the intent was never to cover up allegations of abuse.”

Videotape shows priest in northern Mexico having sex with his secretary 1/4/03 Mexico City (AP) “Roman Catholic officials are calling for the dismissal of a priest in northern Chihuahua state after a newspaper published excerpts of a videotape showing him having sex with his secretary. A front-page story in Friday’s Diario de Chihuahua reported…”

Sins of the Fathers – Grand jury says LI diocese protected abusive priests By Rita Ciolli 2/10/03 “Catholic church officials on Long Island failed in the past to protect children from sexual abuse by priests and cannot be trusted to protect them now without changes in state law, …how the hierarchy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre concealed the alleged criminal behavior of its priests and used “deception and intimidation” in dealing with abuse victims. The report repeatedly points out how avoiding bad publicity was paramount. Calling the diocesan policy of dealing with abusive priests “a sham,” the report exposes a “system that left thousands of children in the diocese exposed to predatory, serial child molesters working as priests.” The report estimates that abuse cases cost the diocese $2 million, with about $1.7 million of that being paid to victims in settlements. And with abuse allegations on record by 2002 against at least 58 priests…the only priest who was defrocked at that point, was one who admitted to having an affair with an adult woman.”,0,1364761.story?coll=ny%2Dtop%2Dspan%2Dheadlines

The priest, the Rev. Michael R. Hands, said the official offered him some money to pay for insurance, medical care and therapy, “but then it was very important that I also gave them my silence.”

Nuns as sexual victims get little notice by Bill Smith 01/04/03 “…thousands of nuns who say they have been sexually victimized. A national survey, completed in 1996 but intentionally never publicized, estimates that a “minimum” of 34,000 Catholic nuns, or about 40 percent of all nuns in the US, have suffered some form of sexual trauma. Report: LA archdiocese to negotiate more than 100 abuse claims 1/1/03 Los Angeles AP – “A new law that took effect…gives alleged victims of priestly sexual abuse more time to sue, but Southern California dioceses have won a reprieve in more than 100 potential cases. Lawyers for alleged victims of priests in Los Angeles and Orange counties agreed…to try to mediate claims instead of taking them immediately to court, said attorney Katherine Kay Freberg, who represents nearly 80 alleged victims. Second grand jury scrutinizes Phoenix diocese Legal maneuvering delays priest sex abuse inquiry By Joseph A. He conducted most of his research at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute in Bethesda, Md. “We were looking at electrical activity in the brain and how to influence it,”…By using very low frequency electromagnetic radiation-the waves way below radio frequencies on the electromagnetic spectrum-he found he could induce the brain to release behavior-regulating chemicals. “We could put animals into a stupor,” he says, by hitting them with these frequencies. “we got chick brains-in vitro-to dump 80 percent of the natural opiods in their brains,” Byrd says. He even ran a small project that used magnetic fields to cause certain brain cells in rats to release histamine. from LMS “Ms Diana Napolis divulged some inner secrets of her side of story. She accused Steven Speilberg and Jennifer Love Hewitt of working in cahoots with the satanic cults, who take control over the mind….Speilberg v. Napolis – Petition for Injunction Prohibiting Harassment – My name is Diana Napolis and I have a Master degree in Transpersonal Psychology and worked as a Court Investigative Social Worker for the County of San Diego from the years 1990-96….”

Survivor advocate Curio Jones is in legal trouble, see January 1, 2001 Response by “Karen Curio Jones” to Mark Sauer’s article, “A Web of Intrigue” in the San Diego Union-Tribune, 9/24/02 “For the past several years I have been an advocate for victims of child ritual abuse and have published information on the world-wide web in an effort to educate the public about these disturbing crimes. I have posted information under various pseudonyms in an attempt to protect myself from physical retaliation, harassment, unfounded complaints to law enforcement or other authorities, and frivolous lawsuits. See the Anti-SLAPP web page for an explanation of California legislation to protect first amendment rights of individuals sued in Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation, i.e., “getting sued for speaking out.”

Satanism and Ritual Abuse Archive By Karen Curio Jones c 2000 – “The following cases describe legal proceedings held in Juvenile, Family, Civil and Criminal Courts around the world where there have been allegations of Satanism or the use of Ritual to abuse others.”

Custodians of abuse – “Across the nation, family court is the last place a mother concerned about child sexual abuse by the child’s father wants to find Herself by Kristen Lombardi 1/9/03 “…A 1989 Massachusetts study commissioned by the state Supreme Judicial Court showed that mothers engaged in custody disputes with their ex-husbands or boyfriends can fall victim to gender bias. Family courts held mothers to higher standards than fathers. Judges and other courtroom personnel, for example, scrutinized mothers’ habits, work schedules, and relationships, as if looking for any reason to prove them unfit.”

Harsh Judgment An epic child-custody case, pitting California against Texas, takes another twist when an appeals court labels the proceedings “nonsense” by Lisa Davis “…appeals court issued a scathing opinion that, among other things, accuses justice officials in Alameda and San Joaquin counties of conducting a “tag-team operation” designed to keep Schmidt incarcerated until she does what they want – bring her children back to California…. She believes that her two children are not safe with their father, a registered sex offender convicted in 1992 of misdemeanor child molestation in an incident involving his 13-year-old niece.”

Man in custody fight faces sex charge – Father whose ex-wife took their girls to Texas against a judge’s order is accused of molesting a Modesto girl By Brian Anderson Contra Costa Times 1/4/03 “…arrested on a child molestation charge. Manuel Enrique Saavedra, 45, a registered sex offender (whose ex-wife, Debra Schmidt, moved the couple’s daughters to the Lone Star State) was charged earlier this week with one count of committing a lewd act on a child.” (Parenthesis added)

Little girls lost? Embraced in family courts across the country, a controversial “syndrome” may be placing abused children at risk By Lynn Vincent 2/8/03 “…how many children are lying about sexual abuse? In custody battles, about one in three, according to most researchers. The Association of Family and Conciliation Courts in Colorado in 1990 surveyed custody-visitation disputes involving 209 alleged child-sex-abuse victims. In 33 percent of cases, the allegations were considered false, and in 17 percent of cases, investigators could make no determination. A 1995 study by University of Michigan social work researcher Kathleen Faller found that of allegations in 215 child-sexual-abuse cases, about 70 percent were considered likely to be true, 20 percent were unlikely to be true, and about one in 10 was uncertain. Studies in 1986 and 1991 yielded similar results….In Ms. Faller’s 1995 study, 40 parents who raised sexual-abuse allegations-none of which were judged knowingly false-experienced negative sanctions, including losing custody to the alleged offender, limitation or loss of visitation, and court admonitions not to report alleged abuse again to the court, child protective services, or police. Such cases often turn on Dr. Gardner’s “parental alienation syndrome.” WORLD reviewed histories on 13 PAS cases…court records show the mother had already been found a fit parent, and was in most cases already the primary custodial parent. In all 13, court-appointed psychologists ignored children’s testimony of sexual abuse, and in some cases, medical findings of abuse, and even previous sex-offender violations. And in all 13 cases, court-appointed mediators concluded that the mothers had inculcated PAS in their children and recommended Dr. Gardner’s standard prescription: to strip custody from the mother and place the child with the father for “deprogramming.”

Secrecy News from the FAS Project on Government Secrecy Volume 2003, Issue No. 8 1/21/03 “Gov’t Rebuffed on FOIA Fee Claims – In a victory for the embattled Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), a federal court last week blocked a Bush Administration attempt to narrow the class of FOIA requesters who are eligible to have the costs of processing their requests waived.”

all six from BO Exposure to trauma: The long-term effects of suppressing emotional reactions. Wastell CA J Nerv Ment Dis 2002 Dec; 190(12):839-45 “A cross-sectional study of 437 ambulance officers in a large state of Australia examined the long-term effects of suppressing emotion reactions to exposure to trauma. Results indicate that the use of emotion-suppressing defenses (withdrawal or acting out) have a highly significant positive relationship with physical and psychological stress symptoms.” Department of Psychology, Macquarie University, NSW 2109, Sydney, Australia. The European history of psychotraumatology. Weisaeth L J Trauma Stress 2002 Dec; 15(6):443-52 “The history of European psychotraumatology shows that opposing cultural, social, economic, and political forces have influenced scientific development….Towards the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century the study of psychic trauma identified important intrapsychic phenomena, and, consequently, there was a neglect of the external stressor.” Division of Disaster Psychiatry, University of Oslo/HQ Defence Command Norway, Oslo, Norway.

Rationale for a posttraumatic stress spectrum disorder. Moreau C, Zisook S Psychiatr Clin North Am 2002 Dec; 25(4):775-90 “Given that responses to trauma vary considerably, another possible spectrum includes trauma-related conditions. Traumatic grief, somatization, acute stress disorder and dissociation, personality disorders, depressive disorders, and other anxiety disorders all have significant associations with PTSD.” Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, CA 92093-0603 R, USA.

Brain structures in pediatric maltreatment-related posttraumatic stress disorder: A sociodemographically matched study. De Bellis MD, Keshavan MS, Shifflett H, Iyengar S, Beers SR, Hall J, Moritz G Biol Psychiatry 2002 Dec 1; 52(11):1066-78 “Previous investigations suggest that maltreated children evidence alterations of chemical mediators of stress and adverse brain development….Brain volumes positively correlated with age of onset of PTSD trauma and negatively correlated with duration of abuse….These data provide further evidence to suggest that maltreatment-related PTSD is associated with adverse brain development. These data also suggest that male children may be more vulnerable to these effects.” Department of Psychiatry, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Salivary cortisol levels and the cortisol response to dexamethasone before and after EMDR: A case report. Heber R, Kellner M, Yehuda R J Clin Psychol 2002 Dec; 58(12):1521-30 “Trauma survivors with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been shown to have lower basal cortisol levels in the urine, plasma, and saliva than in trauma survivors without PTSD, nontraumatized mentally ill, or healthy subjects.” Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Bronx VA Medical Center.

Childhood trauma associated with smaller hippocampal volume in women with major depression. Vythilingam M, Heim C, Newport J, Miller AH, Anderson E, Bronen R, Brummer M, Staib L, Vermetten E, Charney DS, Nemeroff CB, Bremner JD Am J Psychiatry 2002 Dec; 159(12):2072-80 “The depressed subjects with childhood abuse had an 18% smaller mean left hippocampal volume than the nonabused depressed subjects and a 15% smaller mean left hippocampal volume than the healthy subjects. Right hippocampal volume was similar across the three groups. The right and left hippocampal volumes in the depressed women without abuse were similar to those in the healthy subjects. CONCLUSIONS: A smaller hippocampal volume in adult women with major depressive disorder was observed exclusively in those who had a history of severe and prolonged physical and/or sexual abuse in childhood. An unreported history of childhood abuse in depressed subjects could in part explain the inconsistencies in hippocampal volume findings in prior studies in major depressive disorder.”

Cognitive impact of traumatic events. Bower GH, Sivers H Dev Psychopathol 10: 625-53, 1998. “This view is updated by introducing the distinction between explicit and implicit memory and its relevance to traumatic memory and PTSD. The central role of “the experiencing ego” in the storage and retrieval of episodic memories is postulated. This leads into discussion of dissociative experiences during traumas and the occasional amnesia for voluntary recall of the trauma accompanied by involuntary, uncontrollable flashbacks of it.”

From LMS Sierra Leone haunted by ‘silent war crimes’ Victoria Brittain 1/16/03 “Widespread and systematic sexual violence during a decade of war in Sierra Leone was committed on a far larger scale than the highly visible amputations for which the country became notorious, according to a new report from Human Rights Watch.”,2763,875490,00.html

Abused child liable to be teenage offender: study 1/7/03 – by Farah Farouque “Abused and neglected children are more likely to break the law than their peers by the time they reach age 17, a study confirms. Cases of physical abuse or neglect were “significant”, as these children were most likely to offend later, according to the study published by the Australian Institute of Criminology.”

Interview methods can be crucial – Kids can be accurate if adults know how to question them properly Pam Kelley 12/15/02 Believe the children. “But others believe Ceci and Bruck overstated some points. UNC’s Everson, an expert witness for the prosecution in the Little Rascals case, argues that the authors focused on the weakest part of cases. It’s hard to imagine that every child who claimed abuse was badly interviewed and confused, he says. “There’s so much smoke there,” he says, “it’s hard to imagine there’s no fire.” Recent research also has shown that fantasy elements in children’s testimony, such as flying or being thrown to sharks, aren’t cause for dismissing a child’s allegations, Everson says. Such fantastic details may emerge from the child’s nightmares that occur after the abuse.”

Freud’s unfortunates: Reflections on haunted beings who know the disaster of severe trauma. LaMothe R Am J Psychother 2001; 55(4):543-63 “The forms of dissociation are multiplex and must include a type of dissociation that represents human beings’ fundamental inability to process and represent severe trauma. This article posits a form of dissociation–resulting from trauma–linked to disastrous knowledge, signifying a person’s incapacity to use language and symbol to organize the core of the traumatic experience in terms of semantically structured self-in-relation.” Saint Meinrad School of Theology, St. Meinrad, IN 47577, USA.

Domestic violence more likely from women – report By Padraig O’Morain 6/14/01 “Women are more likely than men to perpetrate domestic violence, according to new research on Irish couples who seek marriage counselling. ..a team led by Dr Kieran McKeown… . “”However, it needs to be emphasised that the outcomes of domestic violence in terms of physical and psychological injuries tend to be considerably more negative for female victims than for male,” they add.”

from BO Child perpetrators–children who molest other children: Preliminary findings. Johnson TC Child Abuse Negl 1988; 12(2):219-29 “Prior to their own sexually abusive behaviors, 49% of these boys had been sexually abused and 19% physically abused. The children all knew the people who victimized them. These male child perpetrators all knew the children they molested. In 47% of the cases the sexual abuse was of a sibling….There was a history of sexual and physical abuse in the majority of the families of these children, as well as a history of substance abuse.” Children’s Institute International, Los Angeles, CA 90005.

[Treatment of hysteria in the 19th century – in which way did German psychiatrists view castration?] [Article in German] Splett T, Steinberg H Fortschr Neurol Psychiatr 2003 Jan; 71(1):45-52 “From Emil Kraepelin (1856-1926) then, psychiatrists began to understand the psychological component of this illness, for which Leipzig neurologist Paul Julius Mobius (1853-1907) had made major contributions. Thus, surgical interventions were rejected and conservative methods of treatment were developed further considering psychological aspects. It was Adolf Strumpell (1853-1925) who had laid the basis for this postulating a “psychic trauma” as the cause for hysteria as early as in 1884. On the other hand, Mobius had developed a psychotherapeutic concept for the treatment of these disorders long before Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) came out with his psychocathartic method.”

New Science Raises the Specter of a World Without Regret The Guilt-Free Soldier by Erik Baard January 22 – 28, 2003 “…the prospect of a soul absolved by meds remains very real. Feelings of guilt and regret travel neural pathways in a manner that mimics the tracings of ingrained fear, so a prophylactic against one could guard against the other. Several current lines of research, some federally funded, show strong promise for this. At the University of California at Irvine, experiments in rats indicate that the brain’s hormonal reactions to fear can be inhibited, softening the formation of memories and the emotions they evoke. At New York University, researchers are mastering the means of short-circuiting the very wiring of primal fear.”

Virginia Child Protection Newsletter – Vol. 66, Runaway Youth “The Children’s Defense Fund in 1992 estimated that 1.5 million youth run away from home each year, over half escaping abusive situations (Penuel & Davey, 2000)….Estimates from the National Runaway Switchboard are much higher. They maintain that 1 in 7 teens between the ages of 10 and 18 will run away. They estimate 1.3 million youth are “on the streets” each day.” VCPN is available by writing J. from BO Memory and suggestibility in maltreated children: Age, stress arousal, dissociation, and psychopathology. Eisen ML, Qin J, Goodman GS, Davis SL J Exp Child Psychol 2002 Nov; 83(3):167-212 “Results indicated that general psychopathology, short-term memory, and intellectual ability predicted facets of children’s memory performance. Older compared to younger children evinced fewer memory errors and greater suggestibility resistance. Age was also significantly related to the amount of detail in children’s abuse disclosures. Neither dissociation nor stress arousal significantly predicted children’s memory.” Department of Psychology, California State University, King Hall, 5151 State University Drive, 90032, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Power of Suggestion an Issue in Child Abuse Case – Subject a possible first for Virginia – M.L. Elrick – The National Law Journal 12/27/02 “After spending four years in prison for allegedly sexually abusing his children, a Leesburg, Va., attorney was acquitted of the charges this month …Bruce McLaughlin, 50, was convicted in 1998 on seven counts of sexually abusing three of his four children, who were then between the ages of 7 and 12. State v. McLaughlin, No. CR 11592….Anderson conceded that some police questions could have been phrased better, but he said the children’s susceptibility to suggestion did not play a major role in the case. He said Levay successfully exploited inconsistencies in the children’s testimony in 1998 and their return to the witness stand four years later…Anderson said, medical experts testified that rectal scarring on one of the victims proved sexual abuse. He said such compelling evidence is present in only one of 100 cases. Anderson said he believes McLaughlin was acquitted because Levay’s use of inconsistencies in the children’s statements and ability to cast doubt on questions asked of the children by their mother and police muddied the waters for jurors.”

four from BO Effects of childhood trauma on psychological functioning in adults sexually abused as children. Roesler TA, McKenzie N J Nerv Ment Dis 1994 Mar; 182(3):145-50 “Childhood traumatic experiences (parents fighting, physical abuse by father or by mother, other childhood traumas) of a nonsexual nature correlated with increased symptom levels and accounted for significant changes in percentage of variance ranging from 5.2% (general trauma symptoms) to 12.3% (posttraumatic stress disorder)….Sexual abuse as a whole contributed significantly to all the symptom measures with the most change in variance noted for dissociation (20.5%).” National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine, C. Comparative psychopathology of women who experienced intra-familial versus extra-familial sexual abuse. Gregory-Bills T, Rhodeback M Child Abuse Negl 1995 Feb; 19(2):177-89 Department of Educational Psychology, University of Houston, TX, USA. “A clinical comparison of two point code types indicated that both sexually abused groups could be characterized as suffering an Affective Depressed-Dissociative Disorder. However, profile shapes produced for the intra- and extra-familial abused groups differed….Profile analyses, discriminant analyses, clinically descriptive comparisons, and post hoc analyses of individual scales all revealed that psychopathology is much more evident in those who have experienced sexual abuse.”

The significance of a history of childhood sexual abuse in bulimia nervosa. Sullivan PF, Bulik CM, Carter FA, Joyce PR Br J Psychiatry 1995 Nov; 167(5):679-82 “Forty-four per cent reported a history of CSA. Bulimic women with CSA reported earlier onset of bulimia, greater depressive symptoms, worse global functioning and more suicide attempts, and were more likely to meet criteria for bipolar II disorder, alcohol and drug dependence, conduct disorder and avoidant personality disorder.” University Department of Psychological Medicine, Christchurch School of Medicine, New Zealand.

Prevalence of sexual abuse among women seeking gynecologic care in Germany. Peschers UM, Du Mont J, Jundt K, Pf urtner M, Dugan E, Kindermann G Obstet Gynecol 2003 Jan; 101(1):103-8 “Almost half (n = 479 [44.6%]) of the women surveyed reported that they had been the subject of unwanted sexual attention. One fifth (n = 216 [20.1%]) had been forced to engage in sexual activities: 6.8% in childhood, 10.3% during adolescence, 6.4% as an adult, and 3.5% across more than one stage. Thirteen women (6%) reported having discussed the abuse with their gynecologist. Sixty-six (30.5%) were too afraid to raise the issue, and 119 (55.1%) stated it was not relevant to their care. Only one woman (0.5%) reported that her gynecologist had asked about sexual abuse.” Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat, Munchen, Germany

J Personal Disord 2002 Jun;16(3):201-14 Childhood abuse as a risk factor for suicidal behavior in borderline personality disorder. Soloff PH, Lynch KG, Kelly TM. Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh, USA. “A childhood history of sexual or physical abuse is highly prevalent in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and is associated with self-destructive behavior in clinical and nonclinical samples….The odds of a sexually abused patient attempting suicide in adulthood was over 10 times that of a patient who was never sexually abused. Given a history of childhood sexual abuse, the risk of adult suicidal behavior in BPD was increased by antisocial traits, severity of BPD, hopelessness, or comorbid major depressive episode (MDE).” PMID: 12136678 [PubMed – indexed for MEDLINE]”

Read J, Agar K, Barker-Collo S, Davies E, Moskowitz A Assessing Suicidality in Adults – Integrating Childhood Trauma as a Major Risk Factor – Professional Psychology: Research & Practice. 2001 Aug Vol 32(4) 367-372 “Current suicidality was predicted better by child sexual abuse (experienced on average 20 years previously) than by a current diagnosis of depression.”

Meet the child molester next door Registered sex offender Jake Goldenflame thinks Megan’s Law protects children – and predators By Janet Kornblum USA TODAY “According to Finkelhor, about 75% of child molesters are white; half are over 30; 75% have been employed; and 95% are male. Girls make up about 75% of the victims….And Finkelhor notes that 70% to 90% of abuse is committed by people known to children, and 30% to 40% by relatives.”
The Experiences of Child Complainants of Sexual Abuse in the Criminal Justice System Dr Christine Eastwood, Prof Wendy Patton – Queensland University of Technology “From a theoretical perspective, the report examines why decades of reform have achieved limited gains for Australian children, and why the criminal justice system remains the legally sanctioned context for the abuse of children….There is widespread agreement in the literature that child sexual abuse spans all races, economic classes and ethnic groups (Finkelhor, 1993, 1994; Goldman & Padayachi 1997; Oates, 1990; O’Donnell & Craney, 1982; Peters, Wyatt & Finkelhor, 1986). The prevalence of sexual abuse is so extensive that in “no sub-group is it clearly absent or rare” (Finkelhor, 1993, p 67). Internationally, epidemiological studies estimate prevalence rates of 7 to 36 per cent for females and 3 to 29 per cent for males (Finkelhor, 1994) and confirm that sexual abuse of children is an international problem. It is estimated that females are abused at one and half times to three times the rate for males (Finkelhor, 1994). According to Bagley (1995), three aspects are clear. The majority of perpetrators are male (in excess of 95 per cent) against male and female children. Around 80 per cent of the time, the offender is known to the child, and a third of sexual offenders are themselves adolescents. Across all studies it is clear that only about half of the young victims disclosed the abuse to anyone (Finkelhor, 1994; Fleming, 1997). Further compounding the ability of the justice system to prosecute these cases is evidence that for every child who does report, three to five cases are not being reported (Finkelhor, 1991).”

Girl, Interrupted – Alanna Krause believes that much of her hellish childhood could have been avoided. Now she’s suing her father, her therapist, and her lawyer in an effort to prove it. …By Bernice Yeung “Throughout the custody case, she begged to live with her mother, because, she claimed, her father was physically abusive and often left her at home alone….the system granted custody of Alanna to her dad…report submitted to the Los Angeles Juvenile Courts, Alanna’s therapist had had a “seemingly intimate” relationship with her father (which he denies), and both the court-appointed evaluator and her court-appointed attorney relied on questionable science in making their recommendations. Once he had custody, Marshall Krause checked Alanna into a locked residential treatment facility in Utah for five months, though she had no criminal history or evidence of mental health problems…. “Hundreds of years of legal history have lead the US to implement a system that ensures that every party in a legal proceeding gets a voice,” she wrote in an article in a San Francisco legal publication. “But there is a forgotten minority that is not afforded these basic rights….Children get their ‘best interests’ represented by adults. We children have no choice and no recourse when those adults have their own agenda.” Scars That Won’t Heal: the Neurobiology of Child Abuse – Maltreatment at an early age can have enduring negative effects on a child’s brain development and function by Martin H. Teicher “More than Three Million Allegations of Childhood Abuse and Neglect are received every year…Our findings dovetailed with a 1978 EEG study of adults who were victims of incest. The study’s author, Robert W. Davies of the Yale University School of Medicine, and his team had found that 77 percent exhibited EEG abnormalities and 27 percent experienced seizures. Subsequent work by other investigators using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology has confirmed an association between early maltreatment and reductions in the size of the adult hippocampus. The amygdala may be smaller as well. In 1997 J. Douglas Bremner, then at the Yale University School of Medicine, and his colleagues compared MRI scans of 17 adult survivors of childhood physical or sexual abuse, all of whom had posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with 17 healthy subjects matched for age, sex, race, handedness, years of education, and years of alcohol abuse. The left hippocampus of abused patients with PTSD was, on average, 12 percent smaller than the hippocampus of the healthy control subjects, but the right hippocampus was of normal size.”

Unconscious Amygdalar Fear Conditioning in a Subset of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients. Ashok Gupta MA (Cantab), MSc November 2000 E-mail: “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a neurophysiological disorder focusing on the amygdala. During a “traumatic” neurological event often involving acute psychological stress combined with a viral infection or other physical stressor, a conditioned network or “cell assembly” is created in the amygdala, analogous to conditioning episodes seen in severe phobias and anxiety states. This cell assembly is particularly resistant to extinction. The unconscious amygdala has become conditioned to be chronically sensitised to negative symptoms arising from the body, given that “fear” tends to generalise unconsciously during periods of severe emotional arousal.”

The Scandal in Our Own Backyard “According to The American Judges Foundation, in 70 percent of cases in which abusive men ask for custody, they succeed in gaining full or joint custody. This national scandal is made possible by the secrecy within the Family Court System and by public disbelief in the scope of the problem….a study by the California Protective Parents Association found that 91 percent of fathers identified by their children as sexual predators received full or partial unsupervised custody-while in 54 percent of these same cases the non-abusing mother was placed on supervised visitations.”

Implications of childhood sexual abuse for adult borderline personality disorder and complex posttraumatic stress disorder. McLean LM, Gallop R. Am J Psychiatry 2003 Feb; 160(2):369-71 “The diagnoses of both borderline personality disorder and complex PTSD were significantly higher in women reporting early-onset abuse than in those with late-onset abuse. Clin J Pain 2002 Nov-Dec; 18(6):394-401 “There were no significant differences between the headache and low back pain groups in terms of prevalence of history of neglect; abuse; or sexual, physical, and emotional abuse separately. In addition, no significant differences were found between the groups with respect to the Dissociative Experiences Scale scores. However, analysis of the SDQ (Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire) scores showed that the neglect rate in the two groups differed significantly. According to our findings, the neglect rate was higher in the headache group…” Department of Psychiatry, Istanbul Medical Faculty, Istanbul University, Turkey.

THE LANCET Volume 361 Number 9356 2/8/03 Commentary Child sexual abuse: vicious circles of fate or paths to resilience?… “In this issue of The Lancet, David Skuse and colleagues report a longitudinal study…These investigators were able to follow up 224 male children, victims of sexual abuse, up to the age of 18-32 years, and to assess whether they were known by the police or by social services, on a national basis, to have themselves committed sexual aggressions. Overall, 11.6% of victims became perpetrators in later life.”

Sexually Abused Kids Don’t All Become Adult Abusers: Study 2/6/03 By Serena Gordon (HealthScoutNews) “The researchers found that only 12 percent of 224 boys who had been sexually abused as children later became sexual abusers themselves. They also discovered that abusers shared similar risk factors growing up, such as abuse from a female or a history of cruelty to animals. “Most males who are sexually abused are unlikely to become sexual offenders,” says the study’s author, Dr. David Skuse, a professor of behavioral and brain sciences at the Institute for Child Health in London….were challenged by at least one expert who says the percentage of abused-turned-predator is probably too low.”

In the US one out of three females and one out of five males have been victims of sexual abuse before the age of 18 years. Sexual abuse occurs across all ethnic/racial, socioeconomic, and religious groups. Unfortunately, sexual abuse is considered a relatively common experience in the lives of children.
