Retired Kentucky priest pleads guilty in church abuse cases as trial about to begin Lori Burling, 3/31/03 Louisville, Ky. (AP) “A retired Roman Catholic priest accused of abuse by dozens of plaintiffs pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual misconduct Monday as his jury trial was scheduled to begin. The Rev. Louis E. Miller, 72, of Louisville…50 counts of indecent and immoral practices and sexual abuse. The charges involve 21 victims…Miller retired from public ministry last year when the accusations became public. He is accused of abuse in more than 80 lawsuits filed against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville, which employed him for more than 30 years…..They say the church was aware of the abuse but did nothing to stop it. A 1990 psychiatric report filed with the court last summer said Miller committed assaults every other month during the 1960s and ’70s, usually targeting boys 10 to 15. When the church learned of the incidents, it moved him from one job to another…The lawsuits against Miller are among more than 200 filed in about the last year which accuse more than 25 priests in the archdiocese of abuse.”
Kelly knew of abuse, kept priest in post – Memos show Creagh admitted molesting boy By Peter Smith The Courier-Journal “In March 1983, Louisville Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly became aware that a local pastor had sexually molested a 15-year-old boy but allowed the Rev. Thomas Creagh to continue leading St. Albert the Great parish. Two memos written for his own file, and initialed or signed by Kelly on March 9 and June 14 in 1983, show that the archbishop was fearful of church scandal and worked to keep the incident from becoming public. More than 200 people have suits pending against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville alleging decades of sexual abuse by 34 priests, teachers and others associated with the church. Whether their cases proceed depends in part on their lawyers’ argument that the state’s statute of limitations should not apply because the archdiocese covered up the sexual abuse.”

Marchers protest at cathedral – Catholic critics want bishops accountable for priests’ actions By Peter Smith 2/24/03 “…called for the resignation of Louisville Archbishop Thomas Kelly, saying they think he has mishandled abuse cases.” “Mary Miller of Louisville, one of 213 people suing the Archdiocese of Louisville over alleged sexual abuse by priests and others associated with the church. From LMS Priest’s crimes hushed – Admission at trial By Sam Pazzano – Toronto Sun 4/15/03 “The bishop for a Northern Ontario diocese admitted in court he told parishioners that a priest was taking a sabbatical when in fact the priest was at a New Mexico treatment centre for sex abusers. Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe told a civil trial yesterday that he gave the parishioners of Rev. Thomas O’Dell’s church “no more details” in May 1990 after he learned the priest allegedly committed acts of gross indecency against two teen brothers in the early 1980s. In 1992, O’Dell admitted committing those offences and was sentenced to six months in prison and two years probation….Plouffe also admitted he destroyed documents sent from O’Dell’s treatment centre because its staff had instructed him to do so. O’Dell…is now serving a 30-month sentence in a Kingston penitentiary for those crimes, described by Justice Robert Boissoneault as “depraved and callous.”

This may be very heavy for survivors From LMS Abused seeks $4M Priest in prison for ’80s assaults By Sam Pazzano, Toronto Sun “A former Catholic priest and his diocese are being sued for almost $4 million in a Toronto courtroom for the “depraved and callous” sexual abuse of a young teen almost 20 years ago. According to a statement of claim, Father Thomas O’Dell stripped the 13-year-old boy, pinned him atop a church altar and forced him to fellate him. The Catholic priest later sodomized the youth with a wooden crucifix while in his office. from LMS End urged for state’s abuse-case time limits By Rudolph Bush 3/11/03 “The state’s 10-year statute of limitations on prosecuting child sexual abusers would be eliminated under a Senate bill scheduled for a committee vote….would require priests to report suspicions of child abuse. House Approves Money for Amber Alert By Jesse J. Holland, AP Washington – “The House joined the Senate …in approving money for a nationwide child kidnapping “Amber Alert”….to quickly stop kidnappers, a ban on computer-simulated child pornography and new punitive measures for sex offenses….Under Sensenbrenner’s bill, people accused of raping or abducting children would be denied bail and held in jail until their trials. In their lawsuit, the plaintiffs accused 15 priests and numerous church officials of tolerating and hiding widespread child sex abuse within the diocese between 1961 and 1985.”

Sexual Abuse & Misconduct in the Catholic Church Selected Cases from Media Reports Through 2002

Assault Charge for Teacher With H.I.V. By Robert Hanley Paterson, N.J., 4/4/03 “A teacher at a Roman Catholic elementary school here has been arrested on charges that he sexually assaulted a former student over a two-month period in the summer of 2001….Since the late 1990’s, Mr. Welsh has taught religion, music, computers and gym, and served as a spiritual adviser to students of St. Therese, sometimes even after they graduated.”

Priest sought help, instead was assigned to youth work By J.M. Hirsch, AP 2/15/03 Concord, N.H. (AP) “Six years after being ordained in 1970, the Rev. Paul Aube realized he had a serious problem. The Roman Catholic priest couldn’t control his sexual urges, he says, and had molested several teenage boys. Needing help, Aube blew the whistle on himself. He says he told his superiors that he’d had sexual contact with the teens, asked his bishop for psychological counseling, and requested to never again be assigned to work with children. That didn’t happen, he says. Aube’s bishop assigned him to a job that put him in regular contact with minors, and he stayed in public ministry first in youth work and later in hospitals another 18 years.”

Report Details Sex Abuse by Priests and Inaction by a Diocese By Fox Butterfield Concord, N.H., 3/3/03 — “The New Hampshire attorney general’s office released more than 9,000 pages of documents and a detailed report today showing how the leadership of the state’s Roman Catholic diocese knew for years about sexual abuse of minors by some of its priests and helped cover it up, violating the state’s child endangerment law.”

Law: Probing priest dad was not my job by Robin Washington 3/14/03 “In his latest deposition, Bernard Cardinal Law said he was “terribly outraged” to learn a priest in his archdiocese had fathered children with a woman and failed to assist her when she was dying of a drug overdose, but said it was not the archbishop’s responsibility to make sure the case was investigated.”

LA cardinal fights document release after vowing openness 3/30/03 Los Angeles (AP) – “the archdiocese has acted aggressively to keep internal church documents concealed from prosecutors and the public. On Tuesday, church lawyers will make their case in court, claiming that communication between Mahony and the suspected priests is protected by the First Amendment. The lawyers say priest-bishop confidentiality is a foundation of Catholicism and that interfering with it violates the free exercise of religion.”
from LMS Judge Rejects Boston Archdiocese’s Motion to Dismiss 500 Suits in Abuse By Pam Belluck Boston, 2/19/03 — “A judge today rejected a motion filed by the Archdiocese of Boston that sought to dismiss nearly 500 civil lawsuits filed in the scandal of sexual abuse by members of the clergy. The judge, Constance M. Sweeney of Superior Court, dismissed the archdiocese’s argument that the First Amendment’s separation between church and state prevents courts from getting involved in how the church supervises priests.”

from LMS Conn. bishop’s resignation OK’d By Sacha Pfeiffer, Globe Staff, 3/12/03 “The Vatican yesterday accepted the resignation of Bishop Daniel A. Hart of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn. – the seventh American bishop to step down since the clergy sexual abuse crisis erupted last January….Hart had come under increasing scrutiny for his role in the abuse scandal, and he is named as a defendant in several lawsuits filed in Massachusetts and Connecticut that accuse him of negligence in his supervision of abusive priests. Church documents made public last year show that Hart played a role in the cases of several accused priests, including the Rev. Benjamin McMahon, who was arrested in the mid-1980s and accused of performing a sex act with another man, but received favorable treatment in court after Hart intervened. Hart also used the church’s influence to ensure that the outcome of McMahon’s case would be private, according to church records.”

New Priest Sex Scandal “In the latest church sex scandal, a Catholic pastor in Florida has just been stripped of his duties after church officials learned that the reverend had placed a personal ad – complete with a naked photo of himself – on a gay web site.”

Dioceses Resist Releasing Names of Accused Priests By Laurie Goodstein – Cleveland 2/26/03 “When a grand jury looking into sexual abuse by members of the Catholic clergy finished its work in December, it reported that it had uncovered accusations against 145 priests. But the panel indicted just one of them…” The grand jury investigated accusations against not only the 145 priests, but also 351 laypeople affiliated with or employed by the church, including teachers, principals and volunteers. Of the laypeople, only the 10 who were indicted had their names released. Prosecutors identified more than 1,000 possible victims of sexual abuse by priests or laypeople affiliated with the church.”

Church offers $4m payout for abuse 3/17/03 “Fifty-six men allegedly abused as boys at a Christchurch Catholic residential school are being offered compensation payments totalling $4 million. The St John of God Order hopes the payments – the largest ever offered by a religious order in New Zealand – will bring a “sad and sorry situation to closure”. The Australasian head of the Order, Brother Peter Burke, said yesterday that he had written to 56 of more than 70 complainants offering them compensation for the sexual abuse they allegedly suffered at Marylands, a Christchurch school for boys with intellectual and learning disabilities run by the Order until 1984.”,2106,2335017a10,00.html

Abuse allegations surface against ex-Roxbury priest by Robin Washington 2/28/03 “In the mid-1970s, members of Roxbury’s St. Joseph’s Parish appealed to Humberto Cardinal Medeiros to assign an African-American priest to the mostly black congregation. In response, he inquired to Albany, N.Y., Bishop Edwin B. Broderick, who offered the Rev. Dozia J. Wilson, noting the priest “has expressed a desire to work among his own people.” What Broderick’s letter did not say, however, is revealed on another note in Wilson’s file: “Ultimatum from police to Bishop Broderick – get him out of Albany.”
Church hires a psychologist who doubts repressed memories By Wendy Davis 3/5/03 A controversial psychologist who has authored studies challenging repressed memories of sexual abuse is expected to present testimony for the Archdiocese of Boston when the first civil lawsuits against church officials go to trial. In papers to be filed today in Suffolk County Superior Court, church lawyers will notify Judge Constance M. Sweeney that they intend to elicit testimony from Elizabeth Loftus, a professor at the University of California, Irvine, to defend the church against charges that the Rev. Paul R. Shanley molested plaintiffs Gregory Ford and Paul Busa.”

all accusations are alleged – UCI Professor Faces Pending Lawsuit – Controversial psychologist is accused of libel and invasion of privacy by alleged abuse victim – Jamie Claridad “UCI’s Distinguished Professor in Social Ecology Elizabeth Loftus, widely known for her studies in false memory research, is currently facing an impending lawsuit filed against her by Nicole Taus in Solano County, Calif….Although Taus could not be reached for comment, a plaintiff report filed at the superior court of California in Solano County accused Loftus and several other parties of invasion of privacy, defamation, libel per se, negligent and intentional infliction of emotional distress and damages. Taus, who is now currently serving as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy Air Corp, was caught between a custody case battle between her parents in 1979 that was later won by her father….David Corwin M.D. to publish an article in 1997 in the scientific journal “Child Maltreatment,” dealing with Taus’ memories on childhood abuse. Taus was not named, nor identified in the article, except as “Jane Doe.” The article drew interest. The journal then printed reviews including both praise and criticism that was published in the same journal. It was this journal article that allegedly prompted further research on Taus conducted by Loftus and Melvin Guyer, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan Medical School. However, the research that was conducted and later published allegedly disclosed private information that revealed Taus’ identity and as a result, have subjected her and her family to further emotional distress from past events.”

from Lynn Crook with permission to republish (all accusations are alleged) : I am preparing a response to Jamie Claridad’s article, “UCI professor faces pending lawsuit” published in UC Irvine’s student newspaper, “New University,” on April 7, 2003. Here are some of the issues I will be addressing.

1. Dr. David Corwin was not “attracted” by a custody battle. Instead, he was asked to evaluate the case based upon a recommendation by Taus’ maternal grandmother.

2. The statement, “Taus claimed initially that while viewing the tapes, she had no recognition of the said events but later said that she did remember” is incorrect. Taus actually recalled a memory while being videotaped. The Corwin et al article should be online by the end of April. Readers may want to review this article and compare it to Loftus and Guyer’s account in “Skeptical Inquirer” which, as of April 3, 2003, was online at Loftus’ UW website.

3. I was never “subject to a custody trial between” my parents. Had Loftus testified at such a trial though, she would have done so at about the age of 10. We’re approximately the same age.

4. Loftus says that I signed up for a class of hers under a false name. However, I haven’t attended a college class since completing grad school in 1970. Loftus may be referring to the 2002 FMSF two-day conference in Illinois at which she was one of many speakers. I registered for this conference under my maiden name.

5. I did not say to the reporter, “Her work has created many enemies.” Nor did I say that Loftus’ actions “drew outcries from university officials prompting her to resign from the University of Washington and the American Psychological Association.” (I expect Loftus to respond unfavorably to this statement.) One quote is accurate. I said that Loftus’ testimony in Crook v. Murphy helped me win the case.

from LMS Calif. diocese sues Boston Archdiocese – Alleges officials hid Shanley’s past By Larry B. Stammer, Los Angeles Times, 4/2/03 “The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino, Calif., sued the Archdiocese of Boston yesterday, alleging that Boston officials hid the history of sexual molestation by former priest Paul Shanley when he moved to California. The lawsuit, filed in San Bernardino County Superior Court, is believed to mark the first time that one US Catholic diocese has sued another in civil court, according to both dioceses.”

Sex-abuse victim backs veracity of repressed memories by Robin Washington 3/17/03 “As the Archdiocese of Boston prepares its defense in the Rev. Paul R. Shanley civil trial by questioning the repressed memories of plaintiffs claiming the priest raped them years ago, a man who has gained near folk-hero status among sexual abuse victims says his long-buried memories are real. And, says Frank Fitzpatrick, who hunted down former priest James R. Porter 11 years ago and was the first to accuse the now-convicted pedophile of abuse…But the case for repressed memory may be strengthened if incidents can be shown where abusers have admitted crimes long recessed in victims’ minds, advocates say. “Certainly, the fact that some perpetrators have admitted to abuse in these cases proves beyond a doubt that repressed memories can and do happen,” said David Clohessy of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests….Rev. James L. Gummersbach did specifically admit to the abuse recalled in a repressed memory when he gave a written apology to Henry Bachmann for molestation occurring in a St. Louis, Mo., church in 1964, Bachmann’s lawyer, Rebecca Randles, said.” In terms of repressed memory, that case was absolutely clean. There was no prior counseling,” she said, discounting the notion a therapist could have “planted” the memory in her client’s mind by suggestive questioning. As further proof, she said, Bachmann recalled the priest tying him up and taking pictures – a fetish Gummersbach’s psychiatric records subsequently revealed he had engaged in with other children.”

Indian priest gets four months jail in US for sex abuse case Indo-Asian News Service 3/28/03 “A visiting priest from India has been sentenced to four months in jail for molesting a 12-year-old girl in Brooklyn, New York….The Diocese of Brooklyn banished Nelson after the abuse. But instead of returning to India, he found employment in the Archdiocese of New York, said the News Day, a New York daily.” Http://,00050001.htm

from LMS Abuse cost Twin Cities archdiocese $3.1 million Warren Wolfe 2/21/03 “Sexual abuse of children by priests has cost the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis about $3.1 million in the past 14 years, and its insurer has paid about $5 million more to settle lawsuits by victims.”

Murray, Star-Ledger Staff “A retired Morris County priest accused of sexually abusing at least a dozen children decades ago has been ejected from the priesthood by Pope John Paul II….However, under heavy pressure from his victims last year, Hanley voluntarily petitioned the pope in June for laicization, or removal from the priesthood.”

McCarrick Decries Md. Child Abuse Bill Cardinal Questions Effect on Confessional By Jo Becker and Caryle Murphy 2/22/03 “Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick is taking aim at the Maryland General
Assembly, charging that a legislative proposal that would require priests to report suspected child abuse would violate the sanctity of the confessional. “If this bill were to pass, I shall instruct all priests in the Archdiocese of Washington who serve in Maryland to ignore it,” McCarrick wrote in a column in the latest issue of the Catholic Standard. “…On this issue, I will gladly plead civil disobedience and willingly – if not gladly – go to jail.”

God’s Banker One of the world’s most notorious holy men is quietly giving Mass in Sun City by Robert Nelson “Archbishop Paul Marcinkus was president of the Vatican Bank from 1971 to 1989. As such, he held the purse strings for the international church. He was constantly seen accompanying Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II, and he was considered by many to be the second most powerful man in the church. He arguably held the most power in the Catholic Church of any American in the history of the church. But by the early 1980s, Marcinkus was increasingly being implicated in massive financial scandals, scandals that spent months on the front pages of newspapers and magazines throughout Europe. His dealings were also the subject of several books published in the 1980s. In the mid-’80s, Italian authorities tried to arrest Marcinkus in connection with a stunning array of crimes, including assassination financing, arms smuggling, and trafficking in stolen gold, counterfeit currencies and radioactive materials. Italian authorities also wanted to talk to Marcinkus regarding what he knew about numerous murders. Through the late 1970s and early 1980s, most every key player involved in schemes with Marcinkus ended up dead. A journalist investigating Marcinkus, the Vatican Bank and their ties to the mob also was murdered at the time. But Marcinkus was never interviewed or arrested. Pope John Paul II sheltered Marcinkus in the Vatican, protecting him for seven years with Vatican City’s sovereign immunity…”

When Mr. Chase published an article on the subject in The Atlantic in June 2000, he says, the Harvard files on this work were “permanently removed” from the Murray Research Center the next month….The experiments involved what Murray called “stressful disputation” or “the Dyad,” but “whatever its name, it was a highly refined version of the third degree.” Subjects like Mr. Kaczynski were humiliated, ridiculed and secretly photographed while debating overqualified opponents, in a process that Mr. Chase regards as dishonest and damaging. Wier – Director, The Trance Institute, Bruetten, Switzerland “I claim that the necessary and sufficient condition for a trance to occur is whenever there is a sustained cognitive object loop of sufficient length of time to cause dissociation. A cognitive object is an abstract way to denote a thought, any thought, whether it is a word, and idea, a feeling, a vision. When a set of cognitive objects repeat often enough, you will go into a trance.” “Most forms of neurotic and psychotic behavior exhibit repeated actions or verbalizations. From a trance theory perspective, any repeated cognitive object loop induces a trance with a consequent disabling of cognitive functions. It is too early to state with conviction which loops cause which cognitive functions to become disabled, or to identify specific therapeutic strategies for pathological trance. But, the application of trance theory to these behaviors is promising.”

An Empirical Look at the Ritual Abuse Controversy – James Randall Noblitt, Ph.D. “Michael Newton (cited in Noblitt, 1998a) accumulated data on criminal convictions in the U.S. where allegations of ritual abuse of children were made. He found cases of 145 defendants who were sentenced.” ” Pamela Hudson (1991) assessed 24 children in a case of alleged ritual abuse at Fort Bragg day care center in California. Hudson found five symptoms to be present among many of the children.” “Susan Kelley (1993) compared three groups of children in day care: 35 allegedly ritualistically abused children, 32 children reportedly sexually, not ritualistically abuse, and 67 children without any claims of sexual abuse. She collected data from the abused children’s parents and compared the results of the children with non-ritualistic sexual abuse with ritualistic sexual abuse. She found that ritualistically abused children were more likely to report more incidents, types and severity of abuse relative to the non-ritual sexual abuse victims. She also found that ritualistic abuse was more often associated with multiple victim, multiple perpetrator situations.” “”Jill Waterman, Robert Kelley, Mary Kay Olivieri, and Jane McCord (1993) did a six year longitudinal study of 82 children who had made allegations of ritualistic sexual abuse (RSA) in the Manhattan Beach, California area in comparison with 37 non-abused (NA) children and 15 non-ritualistically sexually abused (SA) children. A variety of standardized and non-standardized questionnaires and interview instruments were employed. They found that both the RSA and SA group reported intrusive and highly intrusive sexual abuse. Additionally the RSA group but not the SA group reported “terrorizing acts…” “Recantations occurred in 25% of the RSA and 23% of the SA children. This was the case even though the perpetrator in the SA group had given a detailed confession. However, 88% of the RSA group that recanted, later redisclosed abuse.” “”Snow and Sorenson (1990) saw 39 children who described abuse in five neighbor-based cults in Utah. In four of the five cults there were alleged incidents of intrafamilial incest, perpetration by adolescents, and features of an adult sex ring. No adolescent perpetration was found in the fifth group….At least two-thirds of the children described multiple locations of abuse, pornography, ingestion or other use of excrement, the espousal of Satanic beliefs, magical spells and use of occult paraphernalia, animal mutilation or killing, and the use of drugs. The abusers were generally viewed as respected members of the community and many were religious leaders. Two of the accused adult perpetrators were convicted and two adolescents pled guilty.” “Jonker and Jonker-Bakker (1991,1997) reported a case of the ritual abuse of children in the Netherlands. Autobiographical memory specificity and trauma in inpatient adolescents. De Decker A, Hermans D, Raes F, Eelen P. J Clin Child Adolesc Psychol 2003; 32(1):22-31 “Research with adults has shown that clinical depression is associated with a difficulty in retrieving specific autobiographical memories in response to cue words, and this pattern of overgeneral memory is related to the prognosis of depression. Research has also shown a clear positive association between self-reported trauma and overgeneral memory. This study’s results showed that higher levels of trauma-both in terms of total number and in terms of severity or related distress-were associated with reduced autobiographical memory specificity (AM). None of the other emotional variables, such as depression, anxiety, worry, hopelessness, or subjective stress, were significantly related to the retrieval of specific memories. The results are reconcilable with Williams’ (1996) developmental idea that a pattern of overgeneral AM retrieval originates in childhood trauma as a way of regulating affect.” University of Leuven, Belgium.

Effects of stress hormones on traumatic memory formation and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder in critically ill patients. Schelling G. Neurobiol Learn Mem 20 02 Nov; 78(3):596-609 “Studies in long-term survivors of ICU treatment demonstrated a clear and vivid recall of different categories of traumatic memory such as nightmares, anxiety, respiratory distress, or pain with little or no recall of factual events. The number of categories of traumatic memory recalled increased with the total administered dosages of stress hormones (both catecholamines and cortisol), and the evaluation of these categories at different time points after discharge from the ICU showed better memory consolidation with higher dosages of stress hormones administered. However, the administration of stress doses of cortisol to critically ill patients resulted in more complex findings as it caused a significant reduction in PTSD symptoms measured after recovery. This effect can possibly be explained by a differential influence of cortisol on memory. Increased serum cortisol levels not only result in consolidation of emotional memory but are also known to cause a temporary impairment in memory retrieval which appears to be independent of glucocorticoid effects on memory formation. Disrupting retrieval mechanisms with glucocorticoids during critical illness may therefore act protectively against the development of PTSD by preventing recall of traumatic memories.” Department of Anesthesiology, Ludwig-Maximilians-University, 81377, Munich, Germany

A Flight of Mind – The Act of Dissociation Can Protect Children Emotionally From Trauma, but Repeated Use May Cause Lasting Harm by Pamela Oldham – Special to The Washington Post 2/18/03 “Research tells us what children – or, for that matter, adults – generally do when exposed to physical violence or other trauma they can’t flee from or prevent: They “dissociate.” Dissociation is an involuntary human response to high stress or trauma that causes the conscious mind to withdraw and turn inward, reducing incoming stimuli and mitigating the effects of overwhelming emotion. The feeling is one of being present but not consciously aware of oneself or one’s surroundings and is characterized by memory loss and a sense of disconnection. For victims of trauma, experts say, dissociation is often lifesaving. But when the dissociative response is called on repeatedly, especially in early childhood, the defense can become fixed and ingrained, disrupting normal functioning and undermining emotional and physical well-being. The most common cause is chronic child maltreatment – physical, emotional or sexual abuse.”

Adjusted prevalence rates are 16.8% and 7.9% for adult women and men, respectively….CSA is a significant risk factor for psychopathology, especially depression and substance abuse. Preliminary research indicates that CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) is effective for some symptoms, but longitudinal follow-up and large-scale “effectiveness” studies are needed.”

The findings contradict expectations derived from the notion of repression.” Author contact: Department of Psychology, University of Aarhus, Risskov, Denmark.

“Understanding and Assessing Child Sexual Maltreatment” Second Edition by Kathleen Coulbron Faller has excellent information on child abuse, including ritual abuse and sexual abuse in day care. “The vigor of the attack against ritual abuse, like the vigor of the attack against sexual abuse in general, reinforces the belief of some professionals, myself included, that there is substance to ritual abuse.” (p. 31) “…some case descriptions are provided by individuals who appear very credible (Mayer, 1991; Ryder, 1992; Stone & Stone, 1992; Wong & McKeen, 1990), and cases continue to be identified.” (p. 32) “Multiple-abuser centers are ones where there seems to be a plan by the offenders to sexually abuse children. Possible motivations include sexual attraction to children, profit, a desire to harm children, or an ideology that supports ritual abuse. It is these cases that raise questions about offenders opening centers in order to sexually abuse children. Most cases where allegations of picture taking and child prostitution are alleged are multiple perpetrator/multiple victim (Faller, 1988d; Kelley et al. 1993).” (p. 224) Sage Publications, Inc 2455 Teller Road, Thousand Oaks, CA 91320, e-mail : ISBN 0-7619-1996-1

Limited disclosure of sexual abuse in children whose experiences were documented by videotape Sjoberg RL, Lindblad F. Division of Psychosocial Factors and Health, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. Am J Psychiatry 2002 Feb;159(2):312-4 “Ten children’s descriptions of 102 incidents of sexual abuse and the process of disclosing these incidents during police interviews were studied. Children’s self-reports of the abuse were compared to videotapes of the incidents made by the lone perpetrator. RESULTS: There was a significant tendency among the children to deny or belittle their experiences. Some children simply did not want to disclose their experiences, some had difficulties remembering them, and one child lacked adequate concepts to understand and describe them.”

Child Maltreatment Reports from the States to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data Systems – National statistics on child abuse and neglect

Each week CPS agencies receive more than 50,000 referrals (also called reports) alleging that children have been abused or neglected. Almost two-thirds of referrals were screened in by CPS agencies because they were deemed appropriate for investigation or assessment. Nationally, 61.7 percent of all referrals (approximately 1,726,000) were screened in and 38.3 percent (approximately 1,070,000) were screened out….Females composed 59.9 percent of all perpetrators, while males composed 40.1 percent.”

What Kept Elizabeth Smart From Escaping? Subconscious Adapts to Horror in Order to Endure It By Jeanie Lerche Davis WebMD Medical News – 3/14/03 – After nine months, Elizabeth Smart is back home. And this is raising questions about how her captor kept a 15-year-old from escaping when she may have had opportunity. Was she brainwashed? At this point, details of her ordeal remain a mystery. But psychologists voice a few opinions about Elizabeth Smart’s state of mind during her disappearance. Some liken it to the so-called “Stockholm syndrome.”

Kidnapped girl’s ordeal over after nine months – Man claiming to be a prophet held after family accuse police of bungling Duncan Campbell in Los Angeles 3/14/03 “…Elizabeth Smart, the kidnapped Utah teenager….Now it appears that her kidnapper, Brian David Mitchell, a handyman who had worked at the Smart home, believed himself to be a prophet in direct consultation with God. Mitchell, a Mormon, had supposedly decided that Elizabeth, who is now 15, was to be his second bride.”,3604,913938,00.html

Finding Elizabeth…by Dirk Johnson and Elise Christenson NEWSWEEK March 24, 2003 issue “The Mormon church has publicly disavowed Mitchell and Barzee, releasing a statement last week that the pair had long ago been “excommunicated for activity promoting bizarre teachings and lifestyle far afield from the principles and doctrines of the church.” Michael Otterson, a spokesman for the church, would not elaborate on the specifics. But the church considers practicing polygamy–officially forbidden since 1890 — ground for excommunication.”

from LMS Abducted Girl’s Relatives Say Her Captor Brainwashed Her By Nick Madigan Salt Lake City, 3/16/03 – “With prosecutors expected to file charges soon against a nomadic homeless couple in the disappearance of Elizabeth Smart….they (her family) were certain she had been left brainwashed by the man she knew as Emmanuel.”

Young Brides Stir New Outcry on Utah Polygamy By Michael Janofsky 2/28/03 Salt Lake City “Despite its unlawful status, polygamy is thriving throughout Utah, practiced by fundamentalist Mormons who shun mixing with the outside world and live by traditions their ancestors brought west in the mid-1800’s. The number of people in polygamous families in Utah is estimated at perhaps as many as 50,000. Separated by their beliefs from the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which condemned polygamy as a condition of Utah statehood in 1896, fundamentalist Mormons believe that a woman exists to embody the spirit of her religious teachings and serve her husband, responsibilities that include bearing children as soon as possible.”

from BO Sexual and physical abuse during childhood and adulthood as predictors of hallucinations, delusions and thought disorder. Read J, Agar K, Argyle N, Aderhold V Psychol Psychother 2003 Mar; 76(Pt 1):1-22 “In 200 community mental-health-centre clients, the clinically evaluated symptomatology of the 92 clients whose … documented sexual or physical abuse at some point in their lives was compared with that of the 108 for whom no abuse was documented. In the 60 patients for whom child abuse was documented, hallucinations (including all six subtypes), but not delusions, thought disorder or negative symptoms, were significantly more common than in the non-abused group. Adult sexual assault was related to hallucinations, delusions, and thought disorder. In linear regression analysis, a combination of child abuse and adult abuse predicted hallucinations, delusions, and thought disorder. However, child abuse was a significant predictor of auditory and tactile hallucinations, even in the absence of adult abuse.” Psychology Department, University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Hallucinations linked to abuse in childhood 03/14/03 By Martin Johnston “Psychiatric patients who were abused as children are more likely to suffer hallucinations than those who were not abused, research has found. They are also far more susceptible to suffering “command hallucinations” – 17 per cent compared with 2 per cent of the non-abused.”

Vermetten E, Bremner JD. “We review olfactory memories and olfactory flashbacks by presenting 3 cases that illustrate the role of olfaction in PTSD. In these cases, olfaction is either a precipitant of PTSD symptoms or an important component of reexperiencing. DISCUSSION: In PTSD, seemingly nonspecific cues have the potential to precipitate traumatic memories with strong emotional components. These conditioned responses in PTSD are hypothesized to be mediated by specific brain areas, i.e., amygdala, hippocampus, and orbitofrontal cortex.” Author contact: Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Ga, USA.

These processes and, hence, brain plasticity, slow down during childhood and puberty, and plateau in young adulthood. Hormonal actions in early life, and to a much lesser extent later, can be organizational, i.e., can have effects that last for long periods of time, often for the entire life of the individual….Profound stressors, such as those from sexual abuse, may elicit the syndrome in older children, adolescents and adults. Most frequently, chronic dysthymia and/or depression may develop in association with gastrointestinal complaints and/or the premenstrual tension syndrome. A lesser proportion of individuals may develop the classic posttraumatic stress disorder, which is characterized by hypocortisolism and intrusive and avoidance symptoms; in younger individuals it may present as dissociative personality disorder.” Pediatric and Reproductive Endocrinology Branch, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md., USA.

Childhood and adulthood abuse in bulimic and nonbulimic women: Prevalences and psychological correlates. Leonard S, Steiger H, Kao A. Int J Eat Disord 2003 May; 33(4):397-405 “Compared with the normal eaters, bulimic women reported higher levels of childhood abuse. Although bulimic women showed more psychopathology than nonbulimic women, there was a correspondence between the presence and severity of abuse and the severity of concurrent psychopathologic symptoms. Results linked dissociation and submissiveness to most severe forms of abuse. Abuse in adulthood was almost always preceded by earlier abuse during childhood. DISCUSSION: Our findings suggest an association between certain psychopathologic traits and the likelihood of abuse (especially when occurring both in childhood and adulthood). Observed associations could implicate causal effects of childhood abuse on personality development, influences of personality traits in heightening the risk of abuse, or both.” Eating Disorders Program, Douglas Hospital, Verdun, Quebec, Canada.

Childhood sexual abuse and sexual transmission risk behaviour among HIV-positive men who have sex with men. O’Leary A, Purcell D, Remien RH, Gomez C. AIDS Care 2003 Feb; 15(1):17-26 “CSA history was found to be significantly associated with past (in the last 90 days) unprotected anal sex acts, both insertive (33% versus 20%, p < 0.05) and receptive (43% versus 27%, p < 0.02), with partners of HIV-negative or unknown serostatus. Further, several potential mediators of this effect were tested, and three found to be predicted by CSA history….Mediation analyses supported the hypothesis that these factors significantly (albeit partially) accounted for the association of CSA with receptive anal intercourse.” Behavioral Intervention Research Branch, Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, Intervention Research and Support, National Center for STD, HIV and TB Prevention, 1600 Clifton Road, MS E-37, Atlanta, GA 30333, USA.

Goodman GS, Ghetti S, Quas JA, Edelstein RS, Alexander KW, Redlich AD, Cordon IM, Jones DP. Psychol Sci 2003 Mar; 14(2):113-8 “Previous research indicates that many adults (nearly 40%) fail to report their own documented child sexual abuse (CSA) when asked about their childhood experiences. These controversial results could reflect lack of consciously accessible recollection, thus bolstering claims that traumatic memories may be repressed. In the present study, 175 individuals with documented CSA histories were interviewed regarding their childhood trauma. Unlike in previous studies, the majority of participants (81%) in our study reported the documented abuse….Failure to report CSA should not necessarily be interpreted as evidence that the abuse is inaccessible to memory, although inaccessibility or forgetting cannot be ruled out in a subset of cases.” Department of Psychology, University of California, Davis, 95616, USA.

(2003) A Prospective study of memory for child sexual abuse: New findings relevant to the repressed-memory debate. Psychological Science, 14, 113-118. “Goodman et al. (2003) reported that 81% of the participants reported the documented abuse, a proportion that is somewhat higher than in some previously published prospective studies assessing memory for abuse (e.g., Williams, 1994). Near the end of the paper, the authors summarize their findings: “Results from this study indicate that forgetting of CSA may not be a common experience, at least not in a prosecution sample” (p. 117)….Because the participants had been involved as children in criminal cases related to their victimization (a so-called “prosecution sample”), documentation for the abuse was particularly thorough and offered researchers the opportunity to compare later disclosures with documented records. However, along with the fact that the paper provides important new information, there is a substantial risk that the research reported in the paper might be misinterpreted. In particular, the results of this research might be generalized to non-prosecution samples.” “it is critical that we take care to avoid generalizing from highly unusual prosecution samples to populations that may have fundamentally lacked the opportunity of being “believed, supported, and legitimated.”

They were more anxious and depressed, and somatized and dissociated more. Analyses indicated a causal chain linking, in turn, abuse, dissociation, somatization, and IBS. The results are consistent with a model in which childhood abuse is linked to IBS because it causes a tendency to dissociate, and because dissociation causes a general increase in physical symptoms.” Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Liverpool, Whelan Building, Brownlow Hill, Liverpool, L69 3GB, United Kingdom.
