Germany smashes child porn ring 9/26/03 “The operation is said to involve at least 33 countries. German police say they have broken up an international child pornography ring with links to thousands of people in at least 166 countries. 1,000 arrested in months-long child porn crackdown By Curt Anderson, AP 9/26/03 “Washington (AP) – An international investigation into child sex crimes and pornography, dubbed “Operation Predator,” has resulted in more than 1,000 arrests since its inception July 9, federal authorities said Friday…..Among those charged in the broader probe are U.S. citizens who traveled abroad to have sex with minors, people who allegedly molested mentally impaired children and people who smuggled foreign children into the United States to work as prostitutes, Garcia said. Seven held in child sex abuse raids John Ross 10/4/03 “Six men and a woman are expected to appear in court in Stornoway on Monday, after police carried out a series of dawn raids on houses in England and Scotland as part of a nationwide child abuse investigation centred on the Western Isles. Simultaneous swoops were held in Lewis and in three English counties – Dorset, Leicestershire and West Yorkshire – during a carefully co-ordinated exercise involving social workers and four police forces….they will face charges under the Child Protection Act. Ex-priest pleads guilty in altar girl’s sexual assault 10/10/03 Tyler, TX “An ex-priest who fled to South America to avoid trial for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old altar girl pleaded guilty …Gustavo DeJesus Cuello, 40, was accused of having sex with the girl repeatedly between June 1996 and January 1997….The victim, now 21, testified that Cuello convinced her she was willed to him by God and told her that her parents did not love her. “He said if I said something, he would kill my father.” http://www.sfgate.com/

Abuse reporting law overturned Springfield, MS 9/11/03 (AP) “A Missouri law requiring health care workers, teachers and clergy to report suspected child abuse to police has been ruled unconstitutional….Brown’s attorneys argued Missouri’s law was discriminatory and flawed since it failed to set a standard for what should be considered suspicious.” http://www.cnn.com/

Ruling Spurs Confusion in Old Sex Abuse Cases By Jean Guccione and Anna Gorman 10/5/03 “Jose Antonio Vasquez was arrested and jailed last year after DNA tests showed he had fathered the child of a teenager he allegedly raped 10 years ago. This year, a judge freed him, citing a U.S. Supreme Court decision blocking California’s attempt to revive criminal prosecutions in older sex abuse cases. Raul Juarez isn’t as lucky. Predators on Staff in ’70s, Suit Alleges – Mater Dei students were ‘an ongoing supply of victims,’ according to a civil action filed against the Orange and Los Angeles dioceses. Paedophile priest killed in US prison attack 8/24/03 Boston – “Defrocked priest John Geoghan, a central figure in the Catholic Church’s sex abuse scandal, was killed today by a fellow-inmate in the prison where he was serving a sentence for child rape….Internal Church documents obtained by the media showed that Geoghan’s sex abuse history was well known to church officials but that they continued to let him work with children. The Boston Globe reported last year that Geoghan was removed from four straight parishes between 1974 and 1989 for molesting children…..More than 130 people have filed suits against Geoghan claiming he sexually abused them. Richard R. Lavigne as early as the late 1960s, years before the diocese says it first learned of such allegations….DeMontigny told The Associated Press yesterday that he had no concrete evidence that the parish priest, the late Rev. Thomas P. Griffin, told Weldon about the allegations against Lavigne. Defrocked priest-turned-counselor convicted of sexual misconduct 06/19/03 St. Louis (AP) “A defrocked Roman Catholic priest was convicted…of exposing himself to three boys while serving as an elementary school counselor….Earlier this month, he was sentenced to four years and nine months in federal prison on charges he possessed child pornography…..Beine was dismissed from the Roman Catholic priesthood in 1977 over allegations of sexual abuse. Court: Alleged Abuse Victim Can Sue Archdiocese for Moving Pedophile Priest (Santa Ana, CA-WABC, 10/3/03 ) “The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee can be sued for sending a pedophile priest to California without revealing his conviction for child molestation, a state appeals court ruled. It’s the first ruling from a California appeals court on the question of whether out-of-state Roman Catholic officials can be held liable if they don’t reveal past misconduct. Police: Queens priest had porn, gun, Nazi paraphernalia By Michael Weissenstein AP “Investigators found an unlicensed pistol, pornography and Nazi paraphernalia at the home of a priest they arrested on suspicion of making harassing telephone calls to a Catholic school, police said. The Rev. New Suit Says Bishop Dailey Shuffled Pedophile Priests to Evade Investigations By N.J. Burkett 10/1/03 “The church sex abuse scandal could cost the Brooklyn Diocese millions of dollars. Late this afternoon, a lawsuit announced involving dozens of allegations against priests and making new accusations against Bishop Thomas Dailey…..The suit was filed on behalf of 27 alleged victims of sexual abuse, and names as defendants two dozen priests, including Bishop Dailey. Former Illinois Priest Sued For Sexual Abuse 9/16/03 (KSDK) “Five men are suing a former priest, saying he sexually abused them in the 1970s. They are also suing the Springfield, Illinois diocese. Kansas City diocese faces two sexual abuse lawsuits By Kevin Murphy 09/5/03 “Two lawsuits filed Thursday accuse a former Kansas City area priest of sexually abusing minors, and allege that the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph failed to respond appropriately….In the other lawsuit, an anonymous Kansas City man said Monahan’s abuses occurred between 1975 and 1979 when Monahan served at three churches. 4 women sue priest, allege sex assaults 9/9/03 by Cathleen Falsani “Patrice Regnier remembers the priest taking her into the bedroom of her parents’ Winnetka house to hear her confession…the priest sexually assaulted her. He told her the crucifix had come to life and instructed him to do what he was doing to her. He told her God was watching. Regnier was 13, and the Roman Catholic priest was a friend of her devoutly religious family who often said mass in their living room and stayed overnight….According to a lawsuit Regnier and three other women filed in a Cook County court…the Rev. John Powell, a Jesuit priest…and best-selling author of Christian books, sexually abused them between 1966 and 1973.” http://www.suntimes.com/

Boston church to pay $85 million 9/9/03 by Denise Lavoie AP Boston “The Boston Archdiocese agreed…to pay $85 million to settle more than 500 lawsuits from people who claim Roman Catholic priests abused them, a lead attorney in the cases told (AP). Priests, docs under DA probe by Tom Mashberg, Eric Convey and Robin Washington 9/6/03 “Prosecutors are investigating whether psychiatrists at Massachusetts General Hospital violated state law by failing to report sexual abuse by priests in the 1990s…The probe focuses on whether a panel of MGH psychiatrists called the Priest Treaters Group, which met to discuss at least 17 clergy abusers from 1994 to 1997, ignored the state’s mandated reporting statute.” http://www2.bostonherald.com/

Baran was charged with rape and indecent assault and battery on six children while he was a child-care worker in a Pittsfield day care center. He was originally represented by the Public Defender’s Office but chose to obtain private counsel, Leonard Conway of Westfield. After his conviction on these cases involving five of the children, an appeal was taken on Baran’s behalf by Attorney David O. Burbank of Pittsfield, also an experienced and able trial and appellate counsel. The appeal was decided on March 27, 1986, affirming the convictions. Mr. Burbank sought further appellate review and that application was denied by the Supreme Judicial Court on May 30, 1986….The concern that young victims are prone to suggestibility pales in comparison to the suggestibility of grown and experienced newspapermen. Erasing bad memories? Anna Salleh ABC Science Online 8/25/03 “The day when long-term traumatic memories can be selectively wiped out is one step closer, claim Israeli scientists. Mark Eisenberg and colleagues from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot report in the current issue of the journal Science that they have worked out a new rule governing the workings of the brain and the erasing of memories….Every memory undergoes a ‘ripening’ process called ‘consolidation’ immediately after it is formed. It was previously thought that the only opportunity for erasing a memory – by using memory-erasing drugs for example – was during a small window of time about an hour or two after the memory is acquired, and before it is consolidated. Research discussing corroboration and accuracy of recovered memories An Annotated Bibliography – During the past 10 years, researchers have investigated the claims of those who have recalled memories of childhood sexual abuse. Twenty studies show a corroboration rate of up to 70%. This is only one of many peer reviewed abstracts and summaries listed at the website. “Van der Kolk, BA, & Fisler, R. (1995). Dissociation and the fragmentary nature of traumatic memories: Overview and exploratory study. Journal of Traumatic Stress, 8, 505-525. Summary: 46 adults with in depth interviews.
