These are the latest surreal elements in the Laci Peterson murder case.” “The Order of Lion “In 1990, members of a Satanic cult, the Order of the Lion, killed four people in the Modesto suburb of Salida. Five members of the ragtag group were convicted and sent to prison. Three, including the “master,” Gerald Cruz, are on death row, and two are serving life sentences. The victims, some of whom were formerly involved with the cult, had had a running feud with the group….said Ramon Magana, who defended one of the murderers. “There were 20 to 30 members of this cult. We can only account for roughly five that are in prison. The rest are on the outside. Whether they continued in this direction or not, I can’t answer that.” The 1990 case brought to light chilling initiation and punishment rituals among the members, who lived in a compound of trailers behind an old house in Salida, and kept daily diaries. The jury voted 6-1 to acquit 75-year-old Valentina Andrade, who was accused of planning and ordering the mutilations and killings as part of a black-magic ritual…Andrade was charged in the killing of three boys and the castration of two more. Four other defendants were convicted in earlier trials in connection with the killings and mutilations which occurred in the western Amazon city Altamira, between 1989 and 1992. They are serving sentences ranging from 30 to 70 years in prison. Beaten by his pastor, boy tells court By AP 12/03 Austin, Texas “A 12-year-old testified yesterday he was severely beaten with a tree branch by a church pastor and the pastor’s twin brother…Joshua and Caleb Thompson, both 23, are accused of the 2002 beating, which police said was so severe the boy’s kidneys failed and he required a blood transfusion….He said after teachers complained he had been “goofing off” during Bible studies, pastor Joshua Thompson took him to Caleb Thompson’s home where he was beaten with a branch from a tree in the yard.”

Catholic body reveals 150 sexual abuse claims in England and Wales Catherine Lyst “The Catholic Church is investigating scores of new cases of alleged sexual abuse in England and Wales, according to a report to be published today. The first report of the Catholic Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults (COPCA) spells out at least 150 cases, ranging from allegations of inappropriate behaviour to cases considered serious enough to be reported to the authorities.” http://www.news.scotsman.com/uk.cfm?id=1184442003

Catholic Sex Abuse Scandal Expands In Military – New Accusations Surface 10/10/03 Washington “New accusations have surfaced in the past year against current and former Catholic priests who served as chaplains in the military, even as the church has tried to put its clergy sex abuse scandal behind it with fresh policies and investigations. Lawyer for Church Says He Hid His Own Sexual Abuse by Priest By Laurie Goodstein 11/25/03 “For five years, Robert P. Scamardo defended the Roman Catholic Diocese of Galveston-Houston against lawsuits by people who claimed to have been sexually abused by priests. As general counsel, he vigorously resisted accusers, he said, fending off their lawsuits and collaborating with church officials to send them away quietly, with as little money as possible.” “”In an interview in Houston, Mr. Scamardo provided a window into how church lawyers worked to deter lawsuits, minimize the church’s payouts, limit coverage for therapy and keep any settlements secret. It was always the church, he said, that insisted on inserting confidentiality clauses in the settlements — never the victims, as many bishops have contended. He said that while the eruption of the scandal last year had made bishops more likely to express compassion toward victims, the church’s lawyers were still playing hardball behind the scenes. UK police open Calvi murder inquiry Sally Bolton and agencies 9/30/03 “Police in Britain today opened a murder inquiry into the death of Roberto Calvi, a Mafia-linked Italian banker whose body was found hanging beneath a London bridge in 1982.The mysterious death of the Milanese financier, who was nicknamed “God’s banker” because of his connections to the Vatican, has been a pet subject of conspiracy theorists for more than 20 years. Although the first inquest into Calvi’s death returned a verdict of suicide, his family have long claimed that he was murdered. This theory was confirmed by a recent Italian investigation which, in July this year, issued its final report into the circumstances of his death. Calvi was found dead in June 1982, hanging beneath Blackfriars Bridge. The discovery came just days after Banco Ambrosiano, a Vatican-based bank of which he was president, collapsed with debts of $1.3bn (£0.8bn). However, Calvi’s business connections reveal motives for murder. The Banco Ambrosiano had dealt not only with the Cosa Nostra, but also with the Vatican’s financial arm, the Institute for the Works of Religion, and P2, a highly influential but illegal Masonic lodge of which Calvi was a member. In October last year, Rome prosecutors, who had been investigating the case since 1998, announced the results of forensic tests on Calvi’s exhumed remains. The results showed it was most likely that he had been strung up from underneath the bridge by his killers. Calvi’s pockets were weighed down with bricks and stone, suggesting a Masonic connection. Blackfriars, or Fratelli Neri, is the nickname for the Italian Freemasons, who swear that those who betray the brotherhood will be weighed down with stones and drowned. But in December 2002, a Mafia supergrass told police that Calvi had been murdered by the mob for stealing funds they had handed to him to launder. The supergrass accused a convicted Mafioso, Pippo Calo, of ordering the hit. Priest found guilty of assault for pulling gun on church official AP 12/3/03 “Lebanon, Pa. – A Serbian Orthodox priest accused of pulling a gun on the council president of the church where he had presided for 15 years has been convicted of assault and reckless endangerment. However, a jury found the Rev. Filip Velisavljevic innocent of charges of terroristic threats and unlawful restraint stemming from a fight that both men testified was over who would control church business…Velisavljevic also faces a civil lawsuit in which the council alleges he took at least $5,800 in religious items from the church, and that he defrauding the church of about $10,000. Priest in Nogales missing after misconduct allegation Joseph A. Reaves – The Arizona Republic 12/9/03 “A Roman Catholic priest in Nogales being investigated for possible sexual abuse has disappeared. The Rev. Fernando L. Manzo, pastor of San Felipe de Jesus parish, disappeared late last week after being summoned to a closed-door meeting with Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of the Tucson Diocese….The bishop said Manzo promised to let church officials know where he was staying but quickly disappeared.” “”Since June 2002, Tucson’s diocese has identified 25 priests, one deacon and one religious woman who have been accused of “credible” allegations of sexual misconduct with minors….An additional 30 clergy and church employees in the Phoenix Diocese have been accused of sexual misconduct, including eight priests.” http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/1209priest09.html

Priest Charged With Making Obscene Calls AP 12/10/03 “Daytona Beach, Fla. – A part-time priest was charged with making obscene phone calls to a 70-year-old Ormond Beach woman. Stanley Staniszewski, 60, who worked as a “helper” priest at several Catholic churches in the Diocese of Orlando, said he was unaware of any charges and that the calls were made as “a joke” and that he was “under the influence of medication.” The woman, who requested her name not be released, said the Nov. 1 and 2 calls were enough to “scare the heck” out of her. Staniszewski said he still considered himself able to function as a priest. “I have done nothing to her. Priest accused of molesting boy after dressing him up like Jesus By Sara Burnett – Daily Herald (Chicago area) 12/4/03 “A former DuPage County priest already facing sexual abuse charges molested a teenage boy after dressing him like Jesus Christ and taking his picture, an attorney for the victim said…The Rev. Fred Lenczycki abused the teen “on a regular and repeated basis” between 1980 and 1983, when Lenczycki was a priest at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Hinsdale, according to the lawsuit filed…in DuPage County civil court. The eight-count lawsuit also accuses the Diocese of Joliet and Bishop Joseph L. Imesch of covering up widespread clergy abuse and creating an environment that taught parishioners that “good” Catholics didn’t report misconduct.” http://www.dailyherald.com/

from LMS Cardinal urged to aid new law 12/1/03 Chicago “Two dozen advocates for victims of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy picketed Holy Name Cathedral on Sunday afternoon and called on Cardinal Francis George to oppose challenges to a new state law that lengthens the statute of limitations for seeking civil damages in abuse cases. The challenges are not from the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, the advocates said, but George was asked to take a stand. One challenge has been made in an abuse suit filed in Cook County, said Barbara Blaine, president of Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests. The archdiocese is one of the suit’s many defendants but has not challenged the constitutionality of the law signed in July. Bethpage Priest Arraigned on Theft Charges By Rita Ciolli 10/17/03 “A Roman Catholic priest who told police he stole about $100 a week for more than 20 years from the collection basket at St. Martin of Tours church in Bethpage was arraigned in Nassau District Court in Hempstead…The Rev. John Johnston did not enter a plea before Judge Scott Fairgrieve after he was charged with one count of second-degree grand larceny, a felony, for stealing approximately $86,000 over a 20- to 25-year period from the collection baskets at the church.” http://www.newsday.com/

Alleged abuse victims rush to file lawsuits by December Deadline Laura Wides 11/5/03 Los Angeles (AP) “The lawsuit is among more than 400 filed since Gov. Gray Davis signed a law last year that allows sex abuse victims until Dec. 31 to sue the employers of molesters who did nothing to stop the criminal conduct of their employees. Prison term over, minister who took $4 million quickly returns to the pulpit 11/30/03 “The Rev. Henry J. Lyons walked out of prison Sunday morning and headed directly back to the pulpit, telling worshippers he had erred but that time behind bars helped renew his faith. Lyons served nearly five years on grand theft and racketeering charges for using his former role as president of the National Baptist Convention to steal millions of dollars to finance his lavish lifestyle. from LMS Run of Abuse Claims Seen – Those who say they were molested by priests face a year-end deadline for filing legal actions. Settlement talks are continuing. By Jean Guccione and William Lobdell 12/8/03 “The Archdiocese of Chicago agreed in October to pay $12 million to 19 people who said they were abused by priests. The Kentucky Diocese of Covington pledged $5.2 million to 27 alleged victims. The Louisville, Ky., Archdiocese said in June it would pay $25.7 million to nearly 250 alleged victims. And the Diocese of Manchester, N.H., reached a $6.5-million settlement with 61 alleged victims. But experts widely expect any settlements in California to dwarf others, even those in Boston, where the scandal broke. The Boston Archdiocese agreed in October to pay $85 million to 552 victims. Beverly Hills attorney Raymond P. Boucher, lead counsel for the plaintiffs in the Southern California cases, estimates that more than 500 claims will be filed statewide before the end of the year. “Los Angeles is unique,” Boucher said. “The enormous number of children who were sodomized and raped and victimized by priests is greater than in any other archdiocese anywhere else in the country.” The California plaintiffs enjoy significant legal advantages over the Boston claimants, according to Stockton attorney Larry Drivon, who, with Boucher, represents about 300 clients in Southern California.” http://www.latimes.com

Catholic Church in Ireland releases study of sexual abuse by priests AP Dublin, Ireland, 12/4/03 Roman Catholic bishops, releasing a damning report on their handling of child sex-abuse scandals, apologized and promised to improve systems for protecting children. “The 332-page report released Thursday, the fruit of two years of work by psychologists at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, detailed the damage the scandals have done to victims, the church and wider society in this overwhelmingly Catholic nation….More than 100 Irish clergy have been convicted of sex offenses in the last decade. The scandals toppled a government in 1994 after the Irish attorney-general delayed extradition of a priest wanted on sex abuse charges in neighboring Northern Ireland. A compensation tribunal formed earlier this year is expected to pay up to $700 million to thousands of claimants who allegedly suffered abuse in church-run schools, workhouses and orphanages from the 1940s to 1980s.” http://famulus.msnbc.com/

Bishops ‘Turned the Corner’ on Scandal, Leader Says – Victims Group Lists 13 More Alleged Abusers By Alan Cooperman 11/12/03 “The president of the nation’s Roman Catholic bishops said yesterday the group has “turned the corner” on the scandal of sexual abuse by priests, but a victims group said it has found at least 13 alleged abusers who were kept in ministry by bishops in 2003. Vermont Catholic diocese settles another lawsuit 11/23/03 Rutland, Vt. “Vermont’s Catholic Church has settled a second lawsuit accusing its priests of child sexual abuse. Archdiocese Issues Abuse Data – 26 Priests Identified as Likely Molesters By Caryle Murphy – Washington Post 11/7/03 “The Washington Archdiocese said yesterday that 26 of its priests have been credibly accused of child sexual abuse over the past 56 years and that it has spent $4.3 million on victim compensation, legal fees and other expenses stemming from those cases. About 85% of the incidents of abuse occurred before 1980, and the last known incidents occurred in 1990, said archdiocesan spokeswoman Susan Gibbs. Pat entered Rush diagnosed with multiple personality disorder and borderline personality disorder. Upon admission Pat was agitated and incoherent. During her first month on the unit and before she was placed on meds, Pat told staff “I’m switching [personalities] out of control today. I’m doing so much switching today I can’t believe it.” Pat testified that the rapid switching decreased over time as her medications were increased….Other patients said they recognized her from her participation in cult-related criminal activities. At the time of her release from Rush in 1987 Pat was more stable and integrated. Did Pat’s psychiatrist implant false memories as Pat has claimed? Court worker faces new issues By Justin Post “Warren – New charges were filed recently against a Trumbull County Family Court psychologist accused of using a controversial, nonvalidated diagnosis in child custody evaluations. The State Board of Psychology in Columbus has submitted 11 new allegations against Dr. Douglas C. Darnall. Those are in addition to five others that were filed last year by former clients. The charges stem from complaints filed by five people. Darnall is accused of negligence and other administrative violations. The most recent allegations accuse Darnall of “refusing to release records to the board” and “prohibiting the board from conducting an investigation into the content and consistency of his professional record.” Similar to the allegations filed in December, Darnall is accused of using a nonvalidated diagnosis to classify patients’ behavior, and that he used a nonpublished test – the “parental alienation scale” to form conclusions in psychological assessment, which the state says contradicts the standards for educational and psychological testing…Darnall, in denying the allegations, said he plans to fight them during his hearing. Use of avoidant strategies to cope with CSA was expected to produce higher levels of sexual problems and fewer heterosexual sex partners, whereas use of self-destructive coping strategies was expected to result in more dysfunctional sexual behavior and more heterosexual sex partners. Primary reasons for investigation were physical abuse (31%), sexual abuse (11%), neglect (40%), and emotional maltreatment (19%). A larger proportion of physical abuse cases are isolated incidents involving older children and are more likely to lead to injuries. Fifty children were studied in whom medical assessment took place remote in time from anal abuse which was admitted by the perpetrator. Medical assessment included examination to detect the presence of anal physical signs. Most frequent signs were anal scars and tags (either single or multiple) present, respectively, in 84 and 32% of cases. In some cases scars extended to the perianal region….In 6% of the cases there were no abnormal anal findings. The results confirm earlier reports that physical signs, including scars, tags, RAD, funneled anus and extensive venous congestion, are often present in abused children, singly or in combination, and that anal examination should be undertaken even months after a known or suspected sexual assault. In the legal setting these physical signs are seen in association with anal abuse and support the child’s statement.
