‘Vows of Silence’ authors make their case against John Paul II By Kevin Cullen, Globe Staff 8/24/04 “In 1941, an ambitious Mexican priest named Marcial Maciel founded a traditionalist religious order called the Legion of Christ. Since then, Maciel has built the order into an international presence in the Catholic Church, boasting 2,500 seminarians and 600 priests across five continents, including 400 seminarians and 90 priests in the United States alone. Yet there is compelling evidence, outlined in the book “Vows of Silence,” that Maciel may have sexually abused many boys who entered the order as children. Several of his victims say that Maciel told them Pope Pius XII had given him a special dispensation to engage in sex to relieve chronic pain. Runaway Priests, a special report 9/11/04 “Pope John Paul II summoned U.S. cardinals to the Vatican two years ago, at the height of the church’s sex abuse crisis, and made a stirring pronouncement. “People need to know,” he stressed to them, “that there is no place in the priesthood and religious life for those who would harm the young.”….Yet today, one block from the Vatican, a fugitive priest lives in a church building with rooftop views of St. Peter’s Basilica and the pope’s apartment. Priests charged with child abuse being sheltered in Rome 9/13/04 “Some Roman Catholic religious orders have been sheltering priests in Rome despite claims that the men sexually abused children…Of the seven accused priests located by the Dallas Morning News, one has been indicted in Arizona, but refuses to return to face the charges. Two others had admitted to abuse years ago, but now face additional claims.” “The newspaper identified the men as part of an investigation that found more than 200 priests accused of abuse have been moved from country to country. Accused Priest Skips Rwanda Genocide Trial By Sukhdev Chhatbar, Arusha, Tanzania (AP) – A Roman Catholic priest accused of ordering the slaughter of 2,000 people who sought refuge in his church during Rwanda’s genocide refused to appear for the start of his trial at a U.N. tribunal Monday. Rev. Athanase Seromba did not attend in protest against U.N. plans to transfer the trials of some genocide suspects from the Tanzania-based tribunal to Rwanda. The trial began without Seromba after prosecutors argued his rights would not be violated as long as his lawyers were present, tribunal spokesman Roland Amoussouga said. Seromba is the first Roman Catholic priest to be tried for the 1994 genocide in which at least 500,000 minority Tutsis and political moderates from the Hutu majority were killed….Two Rwandan nuns were convicted by a Belgian court on charges they aided and abetted the genocide.” no URL

Boston Archdiocese Gets New Abuse Claims Boston “The Archdiocese of Boston has received at least 140 new reports of sexual abuse by priests, but said it will not negotiate the claims until it resolves disputes with its insurers over payment of last year’s $85 million settlement. Archdiocese spokesman the Rev. Christopher J. Priest sex abuse memories queried “Paul Shanley has pleaded not guilty to the charges – A judge is considering whether to allow so-called repressed memory to be used as evidence against a former Catholic priest accused of child rape in Boston. Paul Shanley is alleged to have raped and molested several boys from 1979 to 1989. He has denied the charges. At a pre-trial hearing, an alleged victim said his memories of abuse only surfaced years after it took place. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston has been accused of covering up a huge sex abuse scandal. Nearly 200 priests have been accused, a former cardinal has resigned, and the archdiocese has been forced to sell off a fifth of its parishes.” “It has paid out millions of dollars in civil lawsuits including a record $1.4m to an alleged victim of Paul Shanley….The 71-year-old former “street priest” has pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of child rape and six of indecent assault and battery. Lawyers: Miami archdiocese to pay $3.4 million – Will settle 23 cases of alleged priest sex-abuse Miami, Florida (AP) “The Archdiocese of Miami has agreed to pay $3.4 million to settle 23 lawsuits brought since 2002 by people who accused Catholic priests of sexually abusing them, the plaintiffs’ lawyer said. The settlements range from $75,000 to $500,000 and conclude all 23 negligence lawsuits brought by attorney Jeffrey Herman. Herman represented more than half of the about 40 former altar boys and other youths who sued the archdiocese after the nation’s church abuse scandal broke in 2002. Priest’s resignation tied to online sexual purchases By Pat Moore, Palm Beach Post 9/24/04 “Stuart – A Martin County priest accused of skimming cash from the weekly offerings at St. Joseph Catholic Church resigned two months ago for another reason: his online purchases of gay pornographic movies, sex toys and bondage paraphernalia. The Rev. Alden Christopher Allen, 52, stepped down in August after Treasure Coast prosecutors notified the Palm Beach Diocese that they felt the priest was “living beyond his means.” They also discovered he was taking $500 to $750 weekly from collection plates and stashing it in a “gray box” with no accountability to parishioners. Church abuse bill could top $2bn – From correspondents in Los Angeles 8/30/04 “Lawyers for hundreds of alleged victims of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests estimate their clients’ claims could cost the Archdiocese of Los Angeles more than $US1.5 billion ($2.14bn), according to court papers. Attorney Raymond P. Boucher said the amount was based on verdicts and settlements in clergy abuse cases nationwide and was consistent with secret estimates of local claims by a Los Angeles judge earlier this year…Mr Boucher, the lead attorney for plaintiffs in Southern California, was asking insurers to put aside at least $US3.1 million ($4.4m) for each of more than 500 claims against the Los Angeles archdiocese, according to the Times. Another 60 claims are against the Diocese of Orange, which covers Orange County….Donald F. Secret memo puts bishops on the spot Stephen Bates, 10/8/04 The Guardian “Allegations of serious shortcomings in the way the Catholic church in Scotland handles accusations of child abuse by its priests have been reported by the Catholic magazine the Tablet. The allegations are apparently contained in a confidential 28-page report sent to the eight Scottish bishops this year by a non-Catholic lawyer who was briefly the director of the church’s new child protection directorate. The magazine quoted May Dunsmuir as saying: “Unacceptable levels of risk to children may have been and could remain present.”….The report was said to allege that some bishops and priests had failed to understand the importance of making retrospective checks on clergy and others working with children, that one diocese had never offered any training in child protection, and that four others had offered no training in recent years. It claimed that cases involving allegations against priests had been closed when they ought to have been left open and that bishops and priests appeared to be unaware that they needed to comply with the 2003 Protection of Children Act, which requires organisations to report individuals found to have committed breaches of child protection. Last night a church spokesman said the magazine’s report was unsubstantiated and based on “misinformed speculation”. Former school chaplain arrested on child sex offences 10/1/04 “A former Anglican chaplain at a prestigious Adelaide boys school has been arrested in Thailand on child sex offences. The Reverend John Mountford was arrested in Bangkok yesterday by Royal Thai Police after a provisional arrest request by Australian authorities…Mountford, a former chaplain at St Peter’s College in Adelaide, fled Australia after reportedly admitting to the college headmaster in June 1992 that he had sexually assaulted a 14-year-old male student…. He subsequently fled to Bali and had since lived in Britain and Thailand. Mountford was arrested yesterday on five counts of indecent assault, one charge of unlawful sexual intercourse and two counts of procuring the commission of an act of gross indecency, Senator Ellison said.” http://www.smh.com.au/

Mixed response to Anglican sex register 10/5/04 “The Anglican Church decision to set up a national register of all church workers accused of sexual misconduct is already attracting criticism for not going far enough. Members at the general synod meeting in Perth have unanimously agreed to screen all priests and lay workers and to set up a national register of all church workers accused of sexual misconduct. Judge says Catholic Church ‘may have ratified’ abuse Don Lattin 9/17/04 “Northern California victims of alleged child sexual abuse by priests got some good news Thursday in their long legal battle to collect damages from the Roman Catholic Church….Sabraw’s tentative order, the subject of a hearing today in Oakland, comes in response to 27 legal motions from some 150 civil lawsuits filed under the new law in 2003. The order said the church “may have ratified sexual abuse by their employees by retaining and/or promoting those employees after knowledge of sexual abuse.” Sabraw also overruled church arguments that the new law was unconstitutional and interfered with the free exercise of religion. “The state has a strong interest in preventing childhood sexual abuse,” Sabraw ruled. “There is minimal imposition on religion by permitting the claims for child sexual abuse against the church defendants.””

Friar wanted in Canada moved to Missouri facility 9/8/04 Los Angeles (AP) “A Franciscan friar who fled molestation charges in Canada and took refuge at the Santa Barbara Mission has been moved to a rural church facility in Missouri, a church official said. Gerald Chumik, 69, will live at an isolated Franciscan facility, similar to a monastery, on 280 acres with about 20 other priests and brothers, church officials said. Chumik was transferred because of pressure from victims’ groups and others that began in July, when the public learned that the friar was wanted in Canada for allegedly molesting a boy three decades ago, said Father Alberic Smith, the superior at the Franciscan mission in Santa Barbara. Mahony was ordered today to turn over documents in the secret personnel files of Roman Catholic priests accused of sexually abusing children after a judge rejected his claim that prosecutors were interfering with Roman Catholic Church operations, in violation of the U.S. Constitution. Superior Court Judge Thomas F. Nuss ruled that disclosing internal documents to criminal investigators doesn’t violate the ability of the church to freely exercise religion, nor does it illegally entangle the state in church business. Rather, the state has a compelling interest in prosecuting child molesters, he ruled. Mahony’s lawyers – who have waged a fierce, 2-year legal battle behind closed doors to keep the subpoenaed documents secret — have vowed to appeal Nuss’ ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary. Those hardball tactics were criticized this year by an independent Catholic national review board that found that Mahony’s legal “argument did little to enhance the reputation of the church in the United States for transparency and cooperation.” latimes.com

Priest Fined $15G in Conn. Insurance Scam 9/9/04 By Diane Scarponi, New Haven, Conn. (AP) “A federal judge fined a Vatican official $15,000 Thursday but spared him prison time for his role in the insurance scam of disgraced financier Martin Frankel. Monsignor Emilio Colagiovanni, 84, must pay the fine within 30 days and cannot leave the United States until he does, U.S. District Judge Ellen Bree Burns ruled. Earlier reports and photographs from the prison have indicated that unmuzzled military police dogs were used to intimidate detainees at Abu Ghraib, something the dog handlers have told investigators was sanctioned by top military intelligence officers there. Most said they were assaulted by fellow servicemen. Those figures include 118 service members, some of them men, who say they were sexually assaulted during the current conflict. In addition, the US Department of Veterans Affairs has found more men than women reporting that they experienced unwanted sexual attention during their service years — from rape to verbal harassment. Army left sexual predator in charge of recruits Sandra Laville 9/8/04 “The British Army allowed a warrant officer with a known history of predatory sexual behaviour towards teenage boys to train young recruits at a controversial Surrey barracks, a court heard yesterday. While at Deepcut barracks, Leslie Skinner, now 46, exploited his position of authority to subject “vulnerable, naive” teenagers to sado-masochistic sexual assaults, in some cases using riding whips and canes. Skinner, a father of two, faces a custodial sentence after yesterday admitting a string of sexual attacks on recruits aged 17 to 19, over five years. Amish sex scandal: An 8-year penalty for years of pain Paul Levy, Star Tribune 8/19/04 “Viroqua, WI “”I was molested by my father when I was 3 and gang-raped day after day by my cousins and brothers, starting when I was 6 or 7,” she told the Star Tribune before Wednesday’s sentencing. Interior, where polygamy is practised and girls are married off as young as 15, is now the focus of a provincial investigation probing allegations that girls are trafficked across the border to U.S. communes in Utah and Arizona. The B.C. probe is also looking at complaints that racism is taught at the provincially funded schools and plural wives claim to be single mothers to collect welfare. Now there are fears that the sect, under the leadership of Warren Jeffs, considered a prophet by some, has embarked on a more secretive — and potentially dangerous — path. Ms. Blackmore believes her daughter and her three young boys have been moved to a walled commune under construction in rural Texas. The fortress compound near Eldorado has prompted alarm among local authorities who say the group bears troubling similarities to the infamous Branch Davidian sect of David Koresh, whose compound near Waco, Tex., was the scene of a horrific standoff that killed 84 people. “Everyone who goes to these compounds is completely cut off from everybody that they’ve known their whole lives,” Ms. Blackmore said. “They’re not allowed to communicate with anyone. Brainwash victims win cash claims – Karin Goodwin 10/17/04 “Hundreds of mentally ill patients who were subjected to barbaric CIA-funded brainwashing experiments by a Scottish doctor could be entitled to compensation following a landmark court ruling. Doctor Ewen Cameron, who became one of the world’s leading psychiatrists, developed techniques used by Nazi scientists to wipe out the existing personalities of people in his care. Cameron, who graduated from Glasgow University, was recruited by the CIA during the cold war while working at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. VeriChips, radio frequency microchips the size of a grain of rice, have already been used to identify wayward pets and livestock. A Few Facts about Trauma “In mental health and substance abuse service settings, As many as 80% of men and women in psychiatric hospitals have experienced physical or sexual abuse, most of them as children. The majority of adults diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (81%)or Dissociative Identity Disorder (90%) were abused as children. Up to two-thirds of both men and women in substance abuse treatment report childhood abuse or neglect. Nearly 90% of alcoholic women were sexually abused as children or suffered severe violence at the hands of a parent. In childhood and adolescence : 82% of young people in inpatient and residential treatment programs have histories of trauma. Violence is a significant causal factor in 10-25% of all developmental disabilities. In the criminal justice and juvenile justice systems : 80% of women in prison and jail have been victims of sexual and physical abuse. In one study, 92% of incarcerated girls reported sexual, physical or severe emotional abuse. Many victims of childhood sexual abuse have continuous memories; a little less than one-third can experience full or partial dissociative amnesia for the trauma. When the clinicians at the Trauma Center began to show each other videotapes of patients with PTSD that seemed to demonstrate dramatic improvements after only a few sessions of EMDR, we decided to embark on a pilot study of treatment outcome using EMDR in which we would use changes in brain function as one of the outcome measures. Physical and sexual abuse were independently associated with repeated suicide attempts when controlling for the effects of the other childhood adverse factors. No other childhood adversity was related to chronic suicidal behavior. Objective: To test the hypotheses that among general psychiatric outpatients, somatoform dissociation is associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms and with reported potentially traumatizing events, especially with events that involve bodily threat from a person, also when reported age at onset, duration and subjectively rated impact of potentially traumatizing events are considered….Somatoform dissociation was strongly correlated with posttraumatic stress symptoms and with reported cumulative traumatization as assessed with two different self-report trauma questionnaires. Among a wide range of trauma types, bodily threat from a person best predicted somatoform dissociation. Emotional neglect and age further improved the prediction, but emotional neglect and abuse did not predict somatoform dissociation when interpersonal threat to the body was not reported. Somatoform dissociation was also best predicted by bodily threat when reported age at onset, duration and subjective impact of reported traumatization were included in the analyses.”

Child Abuse Leads to Adult Heart Disease 9/20/04 By Ed Edelson (HealthDayNews)”Children who are abused or neglected grow up to be adults with a significantly greater risk of heart disease, a new study says. It’s the first study to show a direct link between a wide range of childhood problems and ischemic heart disease — blockage of the arteries that leads to heart attacks and other major problems, said Maxia Dong, a medical epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and lead author of the report, which appears in the Sept. 21 issue of the journal Circulation. The study used data on more than 17,000 adult members of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in California. What does science tell us about memory functioning in dissociative identity disorder and the answers to which questions are an imperative? “Initial findings from this work show differences in processing when DID participants process threat information or are in an anxiety-provoking context. From Tulving’s model little is known about kinds of awareness for autobiographical memories in DID. Scholars of DID have noted that many autobiographical memories, especially those of childhood trauma, may be retrieved with a feeling of knowing rather than remembering. In this case the individual has some awareness that they experienced the trauma, but the memory feels somehow distinct from them, as if it was observed rather than experienced (Huntjens et al., 2003). In the language of Steele, van der Hart, and Nijenhuis (in press), these memories are not ‘personified,’ or accepted as memories of one’s own (it should be noted that some studies are incorporating ‘kinds of awareness’ into their methodology, e.g., Huntjens et al., 2003). Studies of encoding and storage also require attention to determine if the memory deficits observed in DID are largely or exclusively related to retrieval problems or if there are deficits in encoding, storage or both. In short, the study of memory functioning in DID is essential in understanding the psychological underpinnings of DID and the origins of the many memory-based symptoms in this complex psychiatric condition.”

Elevated dissociation was associated with physical and sexual abuse, particularly early childhood abuse, as well as increased prevalence of lifetime traumatic events. Pages xxxix – xl “…at the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague. In June 1988, she (Loftus) served as an expert witness for the defense of Anto Furundzija, a member of the Croat armed forces, who was accused by a witness referred to as Witness A, of being her principle interrogator and torturer. Witness A, a Muslim woman, testified that she was raped numerous times on or about 15 May 1993, after she failed to provide Furundzija, her interrogator, with the information he sought. She reported that Furundzija orchestrated these rapes by another soldier in an effort to coerce this information out of her. She told the court that she was raped vaginally, orally and anally; forced to swallow sperm and urine; forced to strip naked in front of about forty armed soldiers; and had a knife rubbed against her vagina accompanied by the threat that it “might be cut out.” (ICT 1988, p. 663) Loftus, one of the hired guns of the false memory movement who has testified in trials “perhaps 220 or 230 times” (ICT 1998, p. 599), told the court that in her opinion, those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are more likely to be “especially vulnerable to post-event suggestions” – i.e. false memories (p. 615). She cited no research to support this conjecture. The defense subsequently argued that Witness A’s memories about Furundzija’s role were untrue – a product of reconstruction after her extreme trauma and likely PTSD (p. 697). ” “….She (Loftus) admitted to the court that she had only “skimmed” the testimony of Witness A and others in the case, and that she had not spoken to any of the investigators involved (ICT p. 618). Yet she was willing to contribute her expertise to create doubt about the validity of memories of a known torture/rape victim in an infamous genocidal and femicidal war. Instead of admitting that there is no research on the relationship between false memories and PTSD, Loftus contributed a speculation that could be used against most victims of rape and serious crimes of child sexual abuse. Moreover, Victim A had certainly never forgotten that she had been raped and tortured.”

Ignoring issues of dominance and power,” Herman continues, “they took a position that amounted to little more than advocacy of greater sexual license of men.” “In 1976 Wardell Pomeroy (one of the authors of the Kinsey studies wrote the following passage…in Penthouse’s Forum: “Incest between adults and younger children can also prove to be a satisfying and enriching experience, although difficulties can certainly arise. (In any case, I want to emphasize that in no case would I condone incest…when force, violence, or coercion are involved.)”… He overlooks the whole issue of children’s powerlessness in relation to adults who want to have sex with them.” (P. 5 – 8)
