‘Vows of Silence’ authors make their case against John Paul II By Kevin Cullen, Globe Staff 8/24/04 “In 1941, an ambitious Mexican priest named Marcial Maciel founded a traditionalist religious order called the Legion of Christ. Since then, Maciel has built the order into an international presence in the Catholic Church, boasting 2,500 seminarians and 600 priests across five continents, including 400 seminarians and 90 priests in the United States alone. Yet there is compelling evidence, outlined in the book “Vows of Silence,” that Maciel may have sexually abused many boys who entered the order as children. Several of his victims say that Maciel told them Pope Pius XII had given him a special dispensation to engage in sex to relieve chronic pain. The authors, Jason Berry, a journalistic pioneer who exposed sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests in the 1980s, and Gerald Renner, the former religion writer for The Hartford Courant, make a strong case that Maciel was a serial predator who should have been cast aside long ago but who remained immune to credible accusations because of his clout inside the Vatican of Pope John Paul II.”

Runaway Priests, a special report 9/11/04 “Pope John Paul II summoned U.S. cardinals to the Vatican two years ago, at the height of the church’s sex abuse crisis, and made a stirring pronouncement. “People need to know,” he stressed to them, “that there is no place in the priesthood and religious life for those who would harm the young.”….Yet today, one block from the Vatican, a fugitive priest lives in a church building with rooftop views of St. Peter’s Basilica and the pope’s apartment. The Rev. Joseph Henn’s superiors have let him stay with them, even though they say he has refused their instructions to go back to Phoenix and face charges that he molested three boys. ”

Priests charged with child abuse being sheltered in Rome 9/13/04 “Some Roman Catholic religious orders have been sheltering priests in Rome despite claims that the men sexually abused children…Of the seven accused priests located by the Dallas Morning News, one has been indicted in Arizona, but refuses to return to face the charges. Two others had admitted to abuse years ago, but now face additional claims.” “The newspaper identified the men as part of an investigation that found more than 200 priests accused of abuse have been moved from country to country. Nearly half of the cases involved priests who tried to elude law enforcement, the newspaper said.”

Accused Priest Skips Rwanda Genocide Trial By Sukhdev Chhatbar, Arusha, Tanzania (AP) – A Roman Catholic priest accused of ordering the slaughter of 2,000 people who sought refuge in his church during Rwanda’s genocide refused to appear for the start of his trial at a U.N. tribunal Monday. Rev. Athanase Seromba did not attend in protest against U.N. plans to transfer the trials of some genocide suspects from the Tanzania-based tribunal to Rwanda. The trial began without Seromba after prosecutors argued his rights would not be violated as long as his lawyers were present, tribunal spokesman Roland Amoussouga said. Seromba is the first Roman Catholic priest to be tried for the 1994 genocide in which at least 500,000 minority Tutsis and political moderates from the Hutu majority were killed….Two Rwandan nuns were convicted by a Belgian court on charges they aided and abetted the genocide.” no URL

Boston Archdiocese Gets New Abuse Claims Boston “The Archdiocese of Boston has received at least 140 new reports of sexual abuse by priests, but said it will not negotiate the claims until it resolves disputes with its insurers over payment of last year’s $85 million settlement. Archdiocese spokesman the Rev. Christopher J. Coyne told the Boston Sunday Globe that the archdiocese cannot afford to settle the new claims, which legal analysts said could come to about $20 million.”,1280,-4491256,00.html

Priest sex abuse memories queried “Paul Shanley has pleaded not guilty to the charges – A judge is considering whether to allow so-called repressed memory to be used as evidence against a former Catholic priest accused of child rape in Boston. Paul Shanley is alleged to have raped and molested several boys from 1979 to 1989. He has denied the charges. At a pre-trial hearing, an alleged victim said his memories of abuse only surfaced years after it took place. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston has been accused of covering up a huge sex abuse scandal. Nearly 200 priests have been accused, a former cardinal has resigned, and the archdiocese has been forced to sell off a fifth of its parishes.” “It has paid out millions of dollars in civil lawsuits including a record $1.4m to an alleged victim of Paul Shanley….The 71-year-old former “street priest” has pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of child rape and six of indecent assault and battery. A large group of his alleged victims has already sued the Boston archdiocese, saying that church officials knew about the abuse claims but did nothing. A former top official, Bishop Thomas Daily, admitted promoting Paul Shanley despite considering him a “troubled priest”. “

Lawyers: Miami archdiocese to pay $3.4 million – Will settle 23 cases of alleged priest sex-abuse Miami, Florida (AP) “The Archdiocese of Miami has agreed to pay $3.4 million to settle 23 lawsuits brought since 2002 by people who accused Catholic priests of sexually abusing them, the plaintiffs’ lawyer said. The settlements range from $75,000 to $500,000 and conclude all 23 negligence lawsuits brought by attorney Jeffrey Herman. Herman represented more than half of the about 40 former altar boys and other youths who sued the archdiocese after the nation’s church abuse scandal broke in 2002. His cases implicated 10 South Florida priests, who were put on administrative leave or resigned.”
Priest’s resignation tied to online sexual purchases By Pat Moore, Palm Beach Post 9/24/04 “Stuart – A Martin County priest accused of skimming cash from the weekly offerings at St. Joseph Catholic Church resigned two months ago for another reason: his online purchases of gay pornographic movies, sex toys and bondage paraphernalia. The Rev. Alden Christopher Allen, 52, stepped down in August after Treasure Coast prosecutors notified the Palm Beach Diocese that they felt the priest was “living beyond his means.” They also discovered he was taking $500 to $750 weekly from collection plates and stashing it in a “gray box” with no accountability to parishioners. But diocesan officials were not as concerned with the potential theft of parish money as they were with credit card and eBay records showing Allen shopped online for pornographic DVDs, body-piercing rings, tattoo lotions, mink pillows and other items.”

Church abuse bill could top $2bn – From correspondents in Los Angeles 8/30/04 “Lawyers for hundreds of alleged victims of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests estimate their clients’ claims could cost the Archdiocese of Los Angeles more than $US1.5 billion ($2.14bn), according to court papers. Attorney Raymond P. Boucher said the amount was based on verdicts and settlements in clergy abuse cases nationwide and was consistent with secret estimates of local claims by a Los Angeles judge earlier this year…Mr Boucher, the lead attorney for plaintiffs in Southern California, was asking insurers to put aside at least $US3.1 million ($4.4m) for each of more than 500 claims against the Los Angeles archdiocese, according to the Times. Another 60 claims are against the Diocese of Orange, which covers Orange County….Donald F. Woods Jr, an archdiocese attorney, said the $US1.5 billion figure “seems way too high.””,5478,10613357%5E1702,00.html

Secret memo puts bishops on the spot Stephen Bates, 10/8/04 The Guardian “Allegations of serious shortcomings in the way the Catholic church in Scotland handles accusations of child abuse by its priests have been reported by the Catholic magazine the Tablet. The allegations are apparently contained in a confidential 28-page report sent to the eight Scottish bishops this year by a non-Catholic lawyer who was briefly the director of the church’s new child protection directorate. The magazine quoted May Dunsmuir as saying: “Unacceptable levels of risk to children may have been and could remain present.”….The report was said to allege that some bishops and priests had failed to understand the importance of making retrospective checks on clergy and others working with children, that one diocese had never offered any training in child protection, and that four others had offered no training in recent years. It claimed that cases involving allegations against priests had been closed when they ought to have been left open and that bishops and priests appeared to be unaware that they needed to comply with the 2003 Protection of Children Act, which requires organisations to report individuals found to have committed breaches of child protection. Last night a church spokesman said the magazine’s report was unsubstantiated and based on “misinformed speculation”. The Tablet could not have seen the report because it was confidential and had been sent only to the bishops.”,3604,1322297,00.html

Former school chaplain arrested on child sex offences 10/1/04 “A former Anglican chaplain at a prestigious Adelaide boys school has been arrested in Thailand on child sex offences. The Reverend John Mountford was arrested in Bangkok yesterday by Royal Thai Police after a provisional arrest request by Australian authorities…Mountford, a former chaplain at St Peter’s College in Adelaide, fled Australia after reportedly admitting to the college headmaster in June 1992 that he had sexually assaulted a 14-year-old male student…. He subsequently fled to Bali and had since lived in Britain and Thailand. Mountford was arrested yesterday on five counts of indecent assault, one charge of unlawful sexual intercourse and two counts of procuring the commission of an act of gross indecency, Senator Ellison said.”

Mixed response to Anglican sex register 10/5/04 “The Anglican Church decision to set up a national register of all church workers accused of sexual misconduct is already attracting criticism for not going far enough. Members at the general synod meeting in Perth have unanimously agreed to screen all priests and lay workers and to set up a national register of all church workers accused of sexual misconduct. The synod adopted the move to try to stop church workers from avoiding detection by shifting from parish to parish.”

Judge says Catholic Church ‘may have ratified’ abuse Don Lattin 9/17/04 “Northern California victims of alleged child sexual abuse by priests got some good news Thursday in their long legal battle to collect damages from the Roman Catholic Church….Sabraw’s tentative order, the subject of a hearing today in Oakland, comes in response to 27 legal motions from some 150 civil lawsuits filed under the new law in 2003. The order said the church “may have ratified sexual abuse by their employees by retaining and/or promoting those employees after knowledge of sexual abuse.” Sabraw also overruled church arguments that the new law was unconstitutional and interfered with the free exercise of religion. “The state has a strong interest in preventing childhood sexual abuse,” Sabraw ruled. “There is minimal imposition on religion by permitting the claims for child sexual abuse against the church defendants.””
Friar wanted in Canada moved to Missouri facility 9/8/04 Los Angeles (AP) “A Franciscan friar who fled molestation charges in Canada and took refuge at the Santa Barbara Mission has been moved to a rural church facility in Missouri, a church official said. Gerald Chumik, 69, will live at an isolated Franciscan facility, similar to a monastery, on 280 acres with about 20 other priests and brothers, church officials said. Chumik was transferred because of pressure from victims’ groups and others that began in July, when the public learned that the friar was wanted in Canada for allegedly molesting a boy three decades ago, said Father Alberic Smith, the superior at the Franciscan mission in Santa Barbara. The groups demanded that he be returned to Canada to face possible charges but no move has yet been made.”

Cardinal Mahony Ordered to Provide Files Cardinal Mahony Ordered to Provide Files By Jean Guccione 9/8/04 “Cardinal Roger M. Mahony was ordered today to turn over documents in the secret personnel files of Roman Catholic priests accused of sexually abusing children after a judge rejected his claim that prosecutors were interfering with Roman Catholic Church operations, in violation of the U.S. Constitution. Superior Court Judge Thomas F. Nuss ruled that disclosing internal documents to criminal investigators doesn’t violate the ability of the church to freely exercise religion, nor does it illegally entangle the state in church business. Rather, the state has a compelling interest in prosecuting child molesters, he ruled. Mahony’s lawyers – who have waged a fierce, 2-year legal battle behind closed doors to keep the subpoenaed documents secret — have vowed to appeal Nuss’ ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary. Those hardball tactics were criticized this year by an independent Catholic national review board that found that Mahony’s legal “argument did little to enhance the reputation of the church in the United States for transparency and cooperation.”

Priest Fined $15G in Conn. Insurance Scam 9/9/04 By Diane Scarponi, New Haven, Conn. (AP) “A federal judge fined a Vatican official $15,000 Thursday but spared him prison time for his role in the insurance scam of disgraced financier Martin Frankel. Monsignor Emilio Colagiovanni, 84, must pay the fine within 30 days and cannot leave the United States until he does, U.S. District Judge Ellen Bree Burns ruled. Colagiovanni pleaded guilty two years ago to charges that he falsely vouched for a bogus charity Frankel set up to hide his theft of $200 million from insurance companies in five states.”,1282,-4484335,00.html

Sexual assaults haunt victims after military discharge By Roxana Hegeman, Andale, Kan. (AP) “The military investigated 1,012 alleged cases of sexual assault last year, compared to 901 the previous year, according to a Pentagon report.”

describes abuse – Iraqi Teens Abused at Abu Ghraib, Report Finds By Josh White and Thomas E. Ricks The Washington Post 8/24/04 “An Army investigation into the Abu Ghraib prison scandal has found that military police dogs were used to frighten detained Iraqi teenagers as part of a sadistic game, one of many details in the forthcoming report that were provoking expressions of concern and disgust among Army officers briefed on the findings. Earlier reports and photographs from the prison have indicated that unmuzzled military police dogs were used to intimidate detainees at Abu Ghraib, something the dog handlers have told investigators was sanctioned by top military intelligence officers there. But the new report, according to Pentagon sources, will show that MPs were using their animals to make juveniles — as young as 15 years old — urinate on themselves as part of a competition.”

Child Abuse Seen on N.C. Military Bases 9/25/04 By Emery P. Dalesio Raleigh, N.C. (AP) “The cases exemplify new statistics showing that children from military families located in two counties are twice as likely to be killed by their parents or other caregivers than other children statewide. Cumberland County is home to Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base, while Onslow County has Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base and New River Marine Corps air station.” Http://,1280,-4514049,00.html

from LMS Sexual assault in the shadows – Male victims in military cite devastating impact on career, life By Sally Jacobs, Globe Staff 9/12/04 “”A Pentagon study of sexual assault in the military released in May found that 9 percent of the 2,012 reported victims of sexual assault in the armed forces in 2002 and 2003 were men. Most said they were assaulted by fellow servicemen. Those figures include 118 service members, some of them men, who say they were sexually assaulted during the current conflict. In addition, the US Department of Veterans Affairs has found more men than women reporting that they experienced unwanted sexual attention during their service years — from rape to verbal harassment. In fiscal year 2003, for example, 10,693 male veterans told the VA they had experienced such treatment, compared with 9,348 women.”

Army left sexual predator in charge of recruits Sandra Laville 9/8/04 “The British Army allowed a warrant officer with a known history of predatory sexual behaviour towards teenage boys to train young recruits at a controversial Surrey barracks, a court heard yesterday. While at Deepcut barracks, Leslie Skinner, now 46, exploited his position of authority to subject “vulnerable, naive” teenagers to sado-masochistic sexual assaults, in some cases using riding whips and canes. Skinner, a father of two, faces a custodial sentence after yesterday admitting a string of sexual attacks on recruits aged 17 to 19, over five years. His victims were all in the very early stages of their army careers and remained silent about the assaults for up to 10 years because they knew Skinner was “rank” and in the army you did “what you are told”.”,11816,1299488,00.html

Amish sex scandal: An 8-year penalty for years of pain Paul Levy, Star Tribune 8/19/04 “Viroqua, WI “”I was molested by my father when I was 3 and gang-raped day after day by my cousins and brothers, starting when I was 6 or 7,” she told the Star Tribune before Wednesday’s sentencing. Byler, 20, alleges that she was raped more than 200 times by members of the Amish family in which she grew up….”Eli Byler, 24, who told the Star Tribune in April that he first raped his sister when Mary was 8 and he was 12, was sentenced to eight years in prison Wednesday after previously pleading guilty to one count of the sexual assault of a child.”

from LMS Dad’s lawsuit cites fear of Armageddon Kevin Martin, Sun Media 8/27/04 “Calgary – Jehovah’s Witness members used the fear of damnation in Armageddon to convince a young leukemia victim to shun blood transfusions, a lawsuit claims. And the influence exerted on Bethany Hughes by her mother and other Jehovah’s Witnesses directly led to her death two years ago, the court action alleges.”

6 young men sue polygamous sect – Joseph A. Reaves, The Arizona Republic 8/28/04 “Six young men filed suit Friday claiming they were among several hundred forced from their homes and cut off from their families so leaders of the nation’s largest polygamous community could have easier access to multiple wives. The suit, filed in Utah’s 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City, accuses the two top leaders of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of assault, extortion, making “terroristic threats” and encouraging or engaging in child kidnapping.”

from LMS Mother fears sect’s hold over daughter – Fundamentalist group from Bountiful, B.C., is building an isolated compound in Texas By Jane Armstrong “Her hometown community in the B.C. Interior, where polygamy is practised and girls are married off as young as 15, is now the focus of a provincial investigation probing allegations that girls are trafficked across the border to U.S. communes in Utah and Arizona. The B.C. probe is also looking at complaints that racism is taught at the provincially funded schools and plural wives claim to be single mothers to collect welfare. Now there are fears that the sect, under the leadership of Warren Jeffs, considered a prophet by some, has embarked on a more secretive — and potentially dangerous — path. Ms. Blackmore believes her daughter and her three young boys have been moved to a walled commune under construction in rural Texas. The fortress compound near Eldorado has prompted alarm among local authorities who say the group bears troubling similarities to the infamous Branch Davidian sect of David Koresh, whose compound near Waco, Tex., was the scene of a horrific standoff that killed 84 people. “Everyone who goes to these compounds is completely cut off from everybody that they’ve known their whole lives,” Ms. Blackmore said. “They’re not allowed to communicate with anyone. No phone calls, no letters, no nothing. Completely cut off. Complete isolation.” It’s believed that a rift in the church, combined with a raft of state investigations into the church’s activities, prompted the sect to build the Texas refuge for its leader and a select group of followers.” Http://

Mind Control and Experimentation

This may be very heavy for survivors A 10-Page Summary of A Nation Betrayed – Secret Cold War Experiments Performed On our Children and Other Innocent People By Carol Rutz….Preface – The Central Intelligence Agency [CIA] bought my services at the tender age of four from my grandfather in 1952. Over the next 12 years, I was tested, trained, and used in various ways. Electroshock, drugs, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, and other types of trauma were used to make me compliant and split my personality (create multiple personalities for specific tasks). Each alter or personality was created to respond to a post-hypnotic trigger, then perform an act and not remember it later. This “Manchurian Candidate” program was just one of the operational uses of the mind control scenario by the CIA. Your hard earned tax dollars supported this. The CIA financed research project code-named MKULTRA was established to counter Soviet and Chinese advances in brainwashing and interrogation techniques. It consisted of 149 subprojects contracted out to at least 80 institutions. It was designed to study the use of biological and chemical materials in altering human behavior. CIA Director Allen Dulles approved MKULTRA on April 13, 1953. Twenty years after the conception of the MKULTRA project, all known files pertaining to it were ordered destroyed by [then CIA Director] Richard Helms before he retired. In 1977, through a Freedom of Information Act [FOIA] request, 16,000 pages of mind control documents were found, held as part of the Agency’s financial history. Most of the important details were conveniently destroyed to conceal their wrongdoing. p. xvi, xvii

Brainwash victims win cash claims – Karin Goodwin 10/17/04 “Hundreds of mentally ill patients who were subjected to barbaric CIA-funded brainwashing experiments by a Scottish doctor could be entitled to compensation following a landmark court ruling. Doctor Ewen Cameron, who became one of the world’s leading psychiatrists, developed techniques used by Nazi scientists to wipe out the existing personalities of people in his care. Cameron, who graduated from Glasgow University, was recruited by the CIA during the cold war while working at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He carried out mind-control experiments using drugs such as LSD on hundreds of patients, but only 77 of them were awarded compensation. Now a landmark ruling by a Federal Court judge in Montreal will allow more than 250 former patients, whose claims were rejected, to seek compensation.”,,2090-1313808,00.html

BBC NEWS Scotland Frontline Scotland The Memory Thief: The Story of Dr Ewen Cameron “He was a Scottish doctor whose burning ambition was to be a scientific legend. Dr Ewen Cameron, a graduate of Glasgow University, became one of the most eminent psychiatrists in the world. His work in Canada in the 1950s was radical and groundbreaking but now some of his patients are finally receiving compensation. Ross McWilliam reveals that Cameron subjected his unsuspecting patients to massive electric shocks and a cocktail of powerful drugs in a “brainwashing” programme funded by the CIA. Frontline Scotland hears for the first time the horrific personal stories of patients who suffered at his hands.”

Cabinet Magazine – Issue 2 Spring 2001 Psychocivilization and its discontents – Magnus Bärtås and Fredrik Ekman “In 1974 Delgado testified in front of Congress at the MK-Ultra hearings and made his views very clear: We need a program of psychosurgery for political control of our society. The purpose is physical control of the mind. Everyone who deviates from the given norm can be surgically manipulated. The individual may think that the most important reality is his own existence, but this is only his personal point of view. This lacks historical perspective… Man does not have the right to develop his own mind. This kind of liberal orientation has great appeal. We must electrically control the brain. Some day armies and generals will be controlled by electric stimulation of the brain. (José M.R. Delgado, Congressional Record, nr. 26, vol. 118, 1974.)

FDA approves use of implantable chip in patients to pass medical information to doctors Diedtra Henderson, 10/14/04 Washington (AP) “The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved an implantable computer chip that can pass a patient’s medical details to doctors, speeding care. VeriChips, radio frequency microchips the size of a grain of rice, have already been used to identify wayward pets and livestock. And nearly 200 people working in Mexico’s attorney general’s office have been implanted with chips to access secure areas containing sensitive documents. Delray Beach, Fla.-based Applied Digital Solutions said it would give away $650 scanners to roughly 200 trauma centers around the nation to help speed its entry into the health care market.”

article describes crimes – Satanic gang leader’s diary sheds light on murder case By Peter Popham in Rome 10/13/04 “The publication yesterday of chilling diary entries by one of the alleged leaders of a satanic gang accused of three murders has helped to shed light on a case that has shocked Italy. The group of heavy metal fans from Busto Arsizio, a small town outside Milan, are facing prosecutors this week to answer questions about the deaths of three companions in what the diary describe as drug-fuelled orgies….But now one of the alleged leaders of the group, Andrea Volpe, has turned state’s evidence, and pages from a notebook have been leaked. They indicate that if the gang members were not fully paid up black magicians, they at least believed that they were performing rites of some kind.”

Couple jailed over ‘appalling’ sex abuse by Danielle Nuttall 9/10/04 “A middle-aged couple were starting jail sentences totalling 12 years last night after committing “appalling” ritual sex abuse on young girls. David and Bette Stalford, of Oak Hill, Hollesley, were found guilty of a string of offences against three children following a trial at Ipswich Crown Court in July. The offences were committed more than 20 years ago when the couple lived at Great Whelnetham and involved “quasi-Satanic ritual” sex abuse…David Stalford, 56, was jailed for nine years for three counts of indecency, two of indecent assault and six joint charges with his wife of indecency with a child. Bette Stalford, 55, was jailed for three years. …During the trial, the court heard that the couple had engaged in what Simon Spence, prosecuting, called “quasi-Satanic ritual”. These particular allegations, the court heard, were made by two of the three female complainants in the case and involved the girls being made to strip naked and take part in rituals involving sexual touching and oral sex. This happened over a period of months, around 20 years ago, and involved the wearing of robes over naked bodies, the robes then being removed for the sexual activity.”

This page describes crimes – The purpose of ritual elements of the abuse seems threefold: 1.) rituals in some groups are part of a shared belief or worship system. 2.) rituals are used to intimidate victims into silence. 3.) ritual elements (devil worship, animal or human sacrifice) seem so unbelievable to those unfamiliar with these crimes that these elements detract from the credibility of the victims and make prosecution of the crimes very difficult.”

By Sadio Kante BBC correspondent in Mali 9/20/04 “Whenever major events such as initiation ceremonies or elections approach in Mali, some children, women and albinos start to become afraid. Because this is when people – usually from these three groups – disappear. If their bodies are found, they are rarely intact, as some of their organs have been cut out, to be used in human sacrifices, many people believe. Four Suicides Linked to Child Porn Probe 10/2/04 “Melbourne, Australia (AP) – The government will press on with a child pornography crackdown despite the suicides of four people being investigated in the operation, an official said Saturday. Justice Minister Chris Ellison said the deaths were regrettable but vowed they would not hinder Australia’s biggest crackdown on child porn, an operation that he said would likely lead to 500 arrests….Australian authorities already have arrested more than 200 people – including police officers, teachers, doctors and the owner of three child care centers – in the crackdown….The investigation into Australian child porn rings was prompted by a U.S. probe into Internet sites linked to eastern European criminal gangs. Investigators have found an estimated 1 million images of child pornography on computers seized in a string of raids in recent weeks.”,1280,-4529974,00.html

The first of the 200, who included police officers, teachers, doctors and even the owner of a chain of child care centres, appeared in courts across Australia on Friday as the country’s police chief signalled many more arrests were likely. Australian Federal Police commissioner Mick Keelty said more than 500 Australians could be implicated in child Internet porn, adding: “It’s almost certain that there will be further arrests.” Keelty said police across the country had executed more than 400 search warrants and more were to be executed on Friday following the arrest on Thursday of more than 200 men charged with around 2,000 offences.”

US Intelligence and the Nazis – Brietman, Goda, Naftali and Wolfe, “published by the National Archives Trust Fund for the Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Records Interagency Working Group, discusses hundreds of the 8 million-plus pages of documents released under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act by the CIA, FBI, NSA, Army, State Department, and other U.S. agencies. This book contains a great deal of new information about the world of intelligence, especially concerning the postwar use of war criminals by U.S. intelligence organizations. It also sheds new light on Holocaust issues, showing, for example that the Allies had knowledge of the genocide earlier than historians previously believed. By using these newly released documents to refine what was previously understood about World War II, the Holocaust, and intelligence activities during and after the war, the authors demonstrate the historical, cultural, and moral importance of the declassified information. The Hidden History of CIA Torture: America’s Road to Abu Ghraib By Alfred W. McCoy 9/9/04 “From 1950 to 1962, the CIA conducted massive, secret research into coercion and the malleability of human consciousness which, by the late fifties, was costing a billion dollars a year. Many Americans have heard about the most outlandish and least successful aspect of this research – the testing of LSD on unsuspecting subjects. While these CIA drug experiments led nowhere and the testing of electric shock as a technique led only to lawsuits, research into sensory deprivation proved fruitful indeed. In fact, this research produced a new psychological rather than physical method of torture, perhaps best described as “no-touch” torture. The Agency’s discovery was a counterintuitive breakthrough, the first real revolution in this cruel science since the seventeenth century – and thanks to recent revelations from Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo, we are now all too familiar with these methods, even if many Americans still have no idea of their history. Upon careful examination, those photographs of nude bodies expose the CIA’s most basic torture techniques – stress positions, sensory deprivation, and sexual humiliation.” or

Hypnosis really changes your mind 9/10/04 news service “Hypnosis is more than just a party trick, it measurably changes how the brain works, says a UK researcher. Hypnosis significantly affects the activity in a part of the brain responsible for detecting and responding to errors, says John Gruzelier, a psychologist at Imperial College in London. Using functional brain imaging, he also found that hypnosis affects an area that controls higher level executive functions. “This explains why, under hypnosis, people can do outrageous things that ordinarily they wouldn’t dream of doing,” says Gruzelier, who presented his study at the British Association for the Advancement of Science Festival in Exeter, UK. The finding is one of the first to indicate a biological mechanism underpinning the experience of hypnosis. Gruzelier hopes it will also benefit emerging research showing, for example, that hypnosis can help cancer patients deal with painful treatments….”

A Few Facts about Trauma “In mental health and substance abuse service settings, As many as 80% of men and women in psychiatric hospitals have experienced physical or sexual abuse, most of them as children. The majority of adults diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (81%)or Dissociative Identity Disorder (90%) were abused as children. Up to two-thirds of both men and women in substance abuse treatment report childhood abuse or neglect. Nearly 90% of alcoholic women were sexually abused as children or suffered severe violence at the hands of a parent. In childhood and adolescence : 82% of young people in inpatient and residential treatment programs have histories of trauma. Violence is a significant causal factor in 10-25% of all developmental disabilities. In the criminal justice and juvenile justice systems : 80% of women in prison and jail have been victims of sexual and physical abuse. In one study, 92% of incarcerated girls reported sexual, physical or severe emotional abuse. Boys who experience or witness violence are 1,000 times more likely to commit violence than those who do not.” From The Damaging Consequences of Violence and Trauma, 2004, compiled by Ann Jennings, PhD.

(letters published edited for space, not all letters are included below) Sasha Abramsky’s profile of Dr. Elizabeth Loftus [“Memory and Manipulation,” August 20-26] is an uncritical testimonial more worthy of a eulogy than a representation of the true nature of Loftus’ career and agenda. Abramsky brushes aside the ethics complaint against Loftus without analysis and accepts Loftus’ clearly self-defensive posture without question. Furthermore, Abramsky only includes supportive comments by Loftus’ allies and none from her critics….Pamela Perskin, Executive Director, International Council on Cultism and Ritual Trauma, Dallas, Texas

“….Loftus is no scientist or defender of the so-called “wrongly accused.” (After all, she testified on behalf of Ted Bundy and, as she freely admits in her book, upon meeting him in court thought “he’s adorable.”)….Loftus propagates misinformation by comparing normal memory and rote memory with traumatic memory of repeated childhood sexual abuse. While she may recall her own abuse experience, there are hundreds of studies that demonstrate the phenomenon of delayed recall for core events of personally experienced emotional trauma, like childhood sexual abuse, war trauma, torture and the like. Many victims of childhood sexual abuse have continuous memories; a little less than one-third can experience full or partial dissociative amnesia for the trauma. There is also no mention in Abramsky’s article that Loftus resigned from the American Psychological Association in the face of two ethics complaints. Moreover, the description of her bizarre role in the Jane Doe case is reminiscent of stalking, not objective, peer-reviewed scientific research.” Helen L. McGonigle, Brookfield, Connecticut
Dissociative experiences in obsessive-compulsive disorder and trichotillomania: Clinical and genetic findings. Lochner C, Seedat S, Hemmings SM, Kinnear CJ, Corfield VA, Niehaus DJ, Moolman-Smook JC, Stein DJ. Compr Psychiatry 2004 Sep-Oct; 45(5):384-91. “A link between dissociation proneness in adulthood and self-reports of childhood traumatic events (including familial loss in childhood, sexual/physical abuse and neglect) has been documented. Several studies have also provided evidence for an association between dissociative experiences and trauma in patients with various psychiatric disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality, dissociative identity and eating disorders….A total of 110 OCD and 32 TTM patients were compared with respect to the degree of dissociation (using the Dissociative Experiences Scale [DES]) and childhood trauma (using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire [CTQ])….This study demonstrates a link between childhood trauma and DE in patients with OCD and TTM. High dissociative symptomatology may be present in a substantial proportion of patients diagnosed with these disorders.”

Smaller hippocampal volume in Dutch police officers with posttraumatic stress disorder. Lindauer RJ, Vlieger EJ, Jalink M, Olff M, Carlier IV, Majoie CB, den Heeten GJ, Gersons BP. Biol Psychiatry 2004 Sep 1; 56(5):356-63. “After controlling for total brain volume, the hippocampal volume in the PTSD group was significantly smaller in comparison with the traumatized control group (total 10.6%; left 12.6%). Volumes of amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus, gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid were not significantly altered. A significant negative correlation was found between reexperiencing symptoms and hippocampal volume in the PTSD group…We confirmed previous findings of smaller hippocampal volume in PTSD in a new population made up of police officers, excluding comorbidity as a confounder. The finding of smaller hippocampal volume was specific to PTSD.” Centre for Psychological Trauma, Department of Psychiatry de Bascule, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Psychiatric News 9/3/04 Volume 39 Number 17 American Psychiatric Association p. 36 Clinical & Research News Chronic Health Problems Often Accompany PTSD in Women by Eve Bender “Though depression has long been linked to poor physical health, researchers now find that women with PTSD are even more likely than those with depression to have physical ills such as high blood pressure and chronic back pain. Women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have a greater number of medical conditions such as arthritis, lower back pain, obesity, and hypertension, and worse health status overall than women with only depression or with neither disorder, according to a large new study of women veterans.”

EMDR and the lessons from neuroscience research Bessel A. van der Kolk, M.D. Professor of Psychiatry Boston University School of Medicine “”…learning from individuals who have been diagnosed with PTSD confronted us with the fact that, after having been traumatized, particular emotions, images, sensations, and muscular reactions related to the trauma may become deeply imprinted on people’s minds and that these traumatic imprints seem to be re-experienced without appreciable transformation, months, years or even decades after the actual event occurred (Janet, 1889, 1894; van der Kolk & van der Hart, 1991; van der Kolk & Fisler, 1995; van der Kolk, Osterman, & Hopper, 2000). It is precisely this failure to transform and integrate the sensory imprints associated with the trauma that causes people with PTSD to behave as if they were living in the past, even though they may be quite aware that their reactions are out of proportion with the current stimulus.” “”After we completed our first collaborative efforts to image people having traumatic memories (Rauch et al., 1996) we became very interested in pursuing the possibility of imaging how the brain of people with PTSD may change following effective treatment. When the clinicians at the Trauma Center began to show each other videotapes of patients with PTSD that seemed to demonstrate dramatic improvements after only a few sessions of EMDR, we decided to embark on a pilot study of treatment outcome using EMDR in which we would use changes in brain function as one of the outcome measures.  We recently completed that study and will report the full data set elsewhere.  However, in the study we found that 8 of the 12 enrolled subjects had more than 30 percent decrease in their CAPS scores after three sessions.  Generally, these decreases in PTSD scores were accompanied by a concomitant decreased physiological reactivity to a personalized trauma script.”

Is there a specific relationship between childhood sexual and physical abuse and repeated suicidal behavior? Ystgaard M, Hestetun I, Loeb M, Mehlum L. Child Abuse Negl. 2004 Aug; 28(8):863-75. “Seventy-four subjects, 65% of whom were women, consecutively admitted to a general hospital after having made a suicide attempt, were interviewed as part of the intake interview about prior suicide attempts and self-mutilation and received DSM-IV diagnoses….RESULTS: The prevalence of severe sexual abuse was 35%, severe physical abuse 18%, neglect 27%, antipathy 34%, loss of caregiver 37% and exposure to family violence 31%. Physical and sexual abuse were independently associated with repeated suicide attempts when controlling for the effects of the other childhood adverse factors. No other childhood adversity was related to chronic suicidal behavior. The odds ratio of exposure to sexual or physical abuse was highest among those who both repeated suicide attempts and self-mutilated.” Suicide Research and Prevention Unit, Sognsvannsveien 21, Building 12, University of Oslo, NO-0320 Oslo, Norway.

Is a history of trauma associated with a reduced likelihood of cervical cancer screening? Original Research Journal of Family Practice, Oct, 2002 by Melissa Farley, Jacqueline M. Golding,  Jerome R. from BO The long-term effects of child sexual abuse by female perpetrators: A qualitative study of male and female victims. Denov MS. J Interpers Violence 2004 Oct; 19(10):1137-56. “The data were derived from in-depth interviews with 14 adult victims (7 men, 7 women) of child sexual abuse by females. Most respondents reported severe sexual abuse by their mothers. The vast majority of participants reported that the experience of female-perpetrated sexual abuse was harmful and damaging. As a result of the sexual abuse, male and female respondents reported long-term difficulties with substance abuse, self-injury, suicide, depression, rage, strained relationships with women, self-concept and identity issues, and a discomfort with sex.” University of Ottawa

Bebbington PE, Bhugra D, Brugha T, Singleton N, Farrell M, Jenkins R, Lewis G, Meltzer H. Br J Psychiatry 2004 Sep; 185:220-6. “Compared with respondents with other psychiatric disorders or with none, the prevalence of every experience bar one was significantly elevated in those with definite or probable psychosis. The largest odds ratio was for sexual abuse. Controlling for depressed mood somewhat reduced the odds ratios for the individual experiences….In people with psychosis, there is a marked excess of victimising experiences, many of which will have occurred during childhood. This is suggestive of a social contribution to aetiology.” Department of Mental Health Sciences, 48 Riding House Street, London W1N 8EY, UK.

Nijenhuis, E. R., Van Der, H. O., Kruger, K., & Steele, K. (2004). Somatoform dissociation, reported abuse and animal defence-like reactions. Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, 38, 678-686. Objective: To test the hypotheses that among general psychiatric outpatients, somatoform dissociation is associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms and with reported potentially traumatizing events, especially with events that involve bodily threat from a person, also when reported age at onset, duration and subjectively rated impact of potentially traumatizing events are considered….Somatoform dissociation was strongly correlated with posttraumatic stress symptoms and with reported cumulative traumatization as assessed with two different self-report trauma questionnaires. Among a wide range of trauma types, bodily threat from a person best predicted somatoform dissociation. Emotional neglect and age further improved the prediction, but emotional neglect and abuse did not predict somatoform dissociation when interpersonal threat to the body was not reported. Somatoform dissociation was also best predicted by bodily threat when reported age at onset, duration and subjective impact of reported traumatization were included in the analyses.”

Child Abuse Leads to Adult Heart Disease 9/20/04 By Ed Edelson (HealthDayNews)”Children who are abused or neglected grow up to be adults with a significantly greater risk of heart disease, a new study says. It’s the first study to show a direct link between a wide range of childhood problems and ischemic heart disease — blockage of the arteries that leads to heart attacks and other major problems, said Maxia Dong, a medical epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and lead author of the report, which appears in the Sept. 21 issue of the journal Circulation. The study used data on more than 17,000 adult members of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in California. It found that those who suffered emotional or physical abuse or grew up in a dysfunctional household were 30 percent to 70 percent more likely to have a heart attack or other cardiac problem.”

Peter Geigen-Miller, Free Press Reporter 9/25/04 “The price tag for child abuse in Canada runs to more than $15 billion a year in judicial, employment, health and other costs, says a new study at the University of Western Ontario. The study, which included physical, emotional and sexual abuse, neglect and witnessing violent behaviour in the definition of child abuse, was done for the Law Commission of Canada.”
What does science tell us about memory functioning in dissociative identity disorder and the answers to which questions are an imperative? “Initial findings from this work show differences in processing when DID participants process threat information or are in an anxiety-provoking context. From Tulving’s model little is known about kinds of awareness for autobiographical memories in DID. Scholars of DID have noted that many autobiographical memories, especially those of childhood trauma, may be retrieved with a feeling of knowing rather than remembering. In this case the individual has some awareness that they experienced the trauma, but the memory feels somehow distinct from them, as if it was observed rather than experienced (Huntjens et al., 2003). In the language of Steele, van der Hart, and Nijenhuis (in press), these memories are not ‘personified,’ or accepted as memories of one’s own (it should be noted that some studies are incorporating ‘kinds of awareness’ into their methodology, e.g., Huntjens et al., 2003). Studies of encoding and storage also require attention to determine if the memory deficits observed in DID are largely or exclusively related to retrieval problems or if there are deficits in encoding, storage or both. In short, the study of memory functioning in DID is essential in understanding the psychological underpinnings of DID and the origins of the many memory-based symptoms in this complex psychiatric condition.”

from BO Stress generates emotional memories and retrograde amnesia by inducing an endogenous form of hippocampal LTP. Diamond DM, Park CR, Woodson JC. Hippocampus 2004; 14(3):281-91. (long-term potentiation (LTP) “In the present report, we suggest that one type of learning experience, the storage of fear-related (i.e., stressful) memories, is consistent with this prediction. Studies have shown that stress produces potent effects on hippocampal physiology, generates long-lasting memories, and induces retrograde amnesia, all through mechanisms in common with LTP. Based on these findings, we have developed the hypothesis that a stressful experience generates an endogenous form of hippocampal LTP that substitutes a new memory representation for preexisting representations. In summary, our hypothesis implicates the induction of endogenous synaptic plasticity by stress in the formation of emotional memories and in retrograde amnesia.” Department of Psychology, University of South Florida, 4202 E. Hurt by the ones they love most – Domestic abuse rife in the U.S. By Jessica Gardner, Times Herald-Record “Studies have shown that more women and girls between the ages of 14 and 45 are victims of domestic violence than of auto accidents, muggings and rapes combined. Of female homicide victims in the United States, 30 percent are killed by husbands or boyfriends, almost 1,400 women each year, according to the Department of Justice.” “Below are statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice and the National Institute of Justice that outline the reach domestic abuse has in the United States: Women are five to eight times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner. Husbands and boyfriends commit 13,000 acts of violence against women in the workplace each year. More than 30,000 women were murdered by an intimate partner from 1976 to 1996. Violence by an intimate partner accounts for about 21 percent of violent crime experienced by women and about 2 percent of the violence experienced against men. About 1.5 million women are raped and/or physically assaulted by an intimate partner each year. It is estimated that 503,485 women are stalked by an intimate partner each year.”

from BO Deficits in verbal declarative memory function in women with childhood sexual abuse-related posttraumatic stress disorder. Bremner JD, Vermetten E, Afzal N, Vythilingam M. J Nerv Ment Dis 2004 Oct; 192(10):643-649. “Forty-three women with and without a history of early childhood sexual abuse and PTSD underwent neuropsychological testing with subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised for measurement of verbal and visual memory and subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale for measurement of IQ, and behavioral ratings of PTSD and other psychiatric symptoms. Abused women with PTSD had deficits in verbal declarative memory as measured with the subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised compared with women with early abuse without PTSD and nonabused women without PTSD. There were no significant differences in IQ. These findings suggest that early abuse with PTSD is associated with deficits in verbal declarative memory, and that these effects are not related to the nonspecific effects of childhood abuse.” Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Radiology, Emory Center for Positron Emission Tomography, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, and Atlanta VAMC, Decatur, Georgia; and Program for Mood and Anxiety Disorders, National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda, Maryland.

The Secret Trauma – Incest in the Lives of Girls and Women – Diana E. H. Russell pub by Basic Books, 1999. Pages xxxix – xl “…at the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague. In June 1988, she (Loftus) served as an expert witness for the defense of Anto Furundzija, a member of the Croat armed forces, who was accused by a witness referred to as Witness A, of being her principle interrogator and torturer. Witness A, a Muslim woman, testified that she was raped numerous times on or about 15 May 1993, after she failed to provide Furundzija, her interrogator, with the information he sought. She reported that Furundzija orchestrated these rapes by another soldier in an effort to coerce this information out of her. She told the court that she was raped vaginally, orally and anally; forced to swallow sperm and urine; forced to strip naked in front of about forty armed soldiers; and had a knife rubbed against her vagina accompanied by the threat that it “might be cut out.” (ICT 1988, p. 663) Loftus, one of the hired guns of the false memory movement who has testified in trials “perhaps 220 or 230 times” (ICT 1998, p. 599), told the court that in her opinion, those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are more likely to be “especially vulnerable to post-event suggestions” – i.e. false memories (p. 615). She cited no research to support this conjecture. The defense subsequently argued that Witness A’s memories about Furundzija’s role were untrue – a product of reconstruction after her extreme trauma and likely PTSD (p. 697). ” “….She (Loftus) admitted to the court that she had only “skimmed” the testimony of Witness A and others in the case, and that she had not spoken to any of the investigators involved (ICT p. 618). Yet she was willing to contribute her expertise to create doubt about the validity of memories of a known torture/rape victim in an infamous genocidal and femicidal war. Instead of admitting that there is no research on the relationship between false memories and PTSD, Loftus contributed a speculation that could be used against most victims of rape and serious crimes of child sexual abuse. Moreover, Victim A had certainly never forgotten that she had been raped and tortured.”

The Secret Trauma – Incest in the Lives of Girls and Women – Diana E. H. Russell pub by Basic Books, 1999. Quotes from the section “Incest Denied: The Legacies of Freud and Kinsey.” “Judith Herman points out that Alfred Kinsey, “though he never denied the reality of child sexual abuse, did as much as he could to minimize its importance….While acknowledging that 80 percent of girls who had “sexual contacts” with adults both within and outside the family reported being “emotionally upset or frightened,” the Kinsey study argued that this was due to adverse conditioning and not a sign having been sexually abused….Kinsey and his colleagues failed to distinguish between what Herman refers to as “‘nuisance’ acts such as exhibitionism, and frankly exploitive acts such as the prostitution of women and the molestation of children. Ignoring issues of dominance and power,” Herman continues, “they took a position that amounted to little more than advocacy of greater sexual license of men.” “In 1976 Wardell Pomeroy (one of the authors of the Kinsey studies wrote the following passage…in Penthouse’s Forum: “Incest between adults and younger children can also prove to be a satisfying and enriching experience, although difficulties can certainly arise. (In any case, I want to emphasize that in no case would I condone incest…when force, violence, or coercion are involved.)”… He overlooks the whole issue of children’s powerlessness in relation to adults who want to have sex with them.” (P. 5 – 8)

Predicting Memory for Childhood Sexual Abuse: “Non-Significant “Findings with the Potential for Significant Harm by Eileen L. Zurbriggen, Kathryn Becker-Blease (Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, Vol.12(2)2003) The Haworth Press, Inc. “Although Goodman et al. (2003) concluded that forgetting is relatively infrequent among abuse survivors whose perpetrators went through a criminal investigation, there is compelling evidence that some survivors do forget abuse…It would be regrettable if the Goodman et al. findings were used as a means of casting doubt on all delayed or recovered memories of child abuse, even those in which the child had no opportunity to discuss the abuse or was not believed or supported. Adult survivors who are struggling with emerging memories need to be believed. Significant harm could result from a repetition of the denial and discounting that occurred in childhood.”
