4 priests protected by bishop – Deposition reveals Imesch found jobs for abusive clerics By Crystal Yednak, David Heinzmann contributed to this report 2/4/06 “Joliet Bishop Joseph Imesch said a priest he worked with in Michigan had confided that he sexually abused an altar boy there, but Imesch felt no obligation to tell authorities who were investigating the incident, according to a 2005 deposition. In the deposition, which was unsealed this week, Imesch adds new details to the record of how he and the Catholic Diocese of Joliet handled several priests accused of abuse. The Michigan priest, Rev. Gary Berthiaume, admitted the abuse to Imesch after he was arrested but before he was convicted of molesting the boy, according to the deposition. Berthiaume was sentenced to 6 months in prison in 1978. Years later, Imesch invited him to work at a retreat house in the Joliet diocese.” http://www.chicagotribune.com/

Past won’t be repeated, bishop vows – Imesch says he relied on therapists’ advice in sex abuse cases By Crystal Yednak, Chicago Tribune staff reporter. Freelance reporter Steve Brosinski contributed to this report 2/5/06 “Joliet Bishop Joseph Imesch said he relied heavily on the advice of professional therapists when deciding to return priests involved in sexual abuse cases to the ministry. “The actions of those priests happened before psychologists recognized that behavior of that kind was indicative of a severe problem that could not be adequately treated,” Imesch wrote in a letter that was read at weekend masses.”

Motions could derail Cornwall abuse inquiry 3/27/06 CBC News “The Cornwall sex-abuse inquiry faces two motions to limit the scope of its probe that threaten to derail the entire investigation as it resumes Monday. The inquiry, headed by Justice Normand Glaude, is an independent investigation into how the justice system responded to allegations that high-profile members of the community and clergy sexually abused children over the course of 50 years. The judge was to hear two motions as the proceedings resumed: one from a Roman Catholic church diocese that would bar the inquiry from looking into its internal investigations and another from a former priest who wants victims to be prohibited from naming their alleged abusers.” http://www.cbc.ca/ottawa/story/ot-cornwall20060327.html

Cornwall’s wounds reopen as abuse inquiry begins Tara Brautigam Canadian Press 2/14/06 Cornwall, Ont. “Wounds nearly half a century old were reopened in this eastern Ontario city yesterday as a public inquiry began probing how authorities investigated allegations of children being sexually abused by prominent community members…..Stories have been spreading since the late 1950s about a purported underground group of pedophiles operating in this city, about an hour’s drive south of Ottawa. Police spent years trying to get to the bottom of the allegations, laying 114 charges against 15 high-profile men — including doctors, lawyers and Catholic priests — in an investigation named Project Truth. But in the end, only three cases made it to court, with one man pleading guilty and police saying they found no evidence that a pedophile ring operated in the city.” http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20060214.CORNWALL14/TPStory/TPNational/

From LMS A time to ‘clear the air’ – Some Cornwall residents admit to having ‘mixed emotions’ as an abuse inquiry begins Bob Rupert, The Ottawa Citizen 2/11/06 “Cornwall Mayor Phil Poirier says he has “mixed emotions” about the judicial inquiry that opens Monday into allegations of decades of sexual abuse of young people by adults in positions of power and trust. The inquiry will also look into allegations that powerful institutions within the community, including the Roman Catholic Church, two police forces and other organizations and institutions, failed to respond adequately — sometimes not at all — to the victims’ cries for help.” http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/city/story.html?id=1250951b-e1a7-4c23-9ab4-a58d3786e08f

Trial begins for alleged school sex abuse 2/21/06 By John Henzell “A Christchurch school for troubled boys was a place of “very dark secrets and horrible acts” of sexual abuse by Catholic brothers who ruled with an iron fist, a High Court jury has been told. Confessed paedophile Bernard Kevin McGrath, 58, went on trial yesterday, accused of sexually abusing 17 boys during nearly five years as a teacher and dorm master at Marylands residential school in Halswell in the 1970s.” http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3579446a11,00.html

‘Painful memories’ Melissa Evans 2/26/06 “…11 priests found to have molested boys at the seminary from 1964 to 1987, accounts of which are included in a report the Franciscans commissioned in 1993 after several former students came forward.” http://www.newspress.com/

Arbitration hearings in the cases are scheduled to begin next week and run through April. The home sheltered children from troubled or impoverished families as part of the charitable arm of the Catholic church.”

Diocese court records opened – Letters Discuss Priest’s ‘Sexual Misconduct’ By Frank E. Lockwood Herald-leader Staff Writer 3/4/06 “Former Covington Bishop Richard H. Ackerman was warned that a Lexington priest was a pedophile who preyed on boys, but the bishop did nothing to warn parishioners that they had a predator in their midst, according to court records unsealed yesterday. Horrified parents urged church officials to stop the Rev. John B. Modica, assistant pastor at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary from 1974 to 1978, but they were ignored. Documents in a sex abuse lawsuit against the Diocese of Covington portray an out-of-control priest and a church hierarchy that backed him anyway. The internal church records, hidden from view for decades, were made public yesterday.” http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/news/14015658.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp

Italian priest accused of sexually abusing 20 boys 4/5/06 “Italian authorities arrested a priest today and accused him of repeatedly abusing about 20 children from his parish south of Rome over more than a decade. Officers picked up Father Marco Agostini at a youth hostel in the Umbrian town of Assisi where he had been transferred last year after spending a decade in the small town of Pomezia, said Alberto Intini, head of the crime squad at Rome’s police headquarters. Prosecutors have collected testimony on “hundreds” of abuse cases from about 20 boys who claim they were sexually molested by Agostini between 1993-2004, Intini said.” http://breakingnews.iol.ie/news/story.asp?j=178380784&p=y7838y49x

17 abuse suits filed against Vermont diocese…4/2/06 By Kevin O’Connor “Leaders of Vermont’s Catholic Church face a daunting question: Do they settle 17 new priest misconduct lawsuits for up to $1 million, or do they try to fight the charges in a string of headline-grabbing trials set to start the day after Easter? Burlington attorney Jerome O’Neill has filed civil lawsuits in Chittenden Superior Court on behalf of 17 clients, charging five former Vermont priests with child sexual abuse.” http://www.rutlandherald.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060402/NEWS/604020397/1002

Records show ex-bishop didn’t warn of abuse claims AP 3/5/06 Lexington, Ky. “A former Covington bishop didn’t warn parishioners about an alleged sexually abusive priest and gave the priest high marks in a letter to another Roman Catholic official, according to unsealed court records. The former bishop, Richard H. Ackerman, was informed that the priest — the Rev. John B. Modica — was an alleged pedophile who preyed on boys, according to the records. Parents urged church officials to stop the Lexington priest but were ignored….The Covington Diocese, which included Lexington until 1988, has agreed to settle a separate class-action lawsuit for up to $85 million with sexual abuse victims. More than 350 people are seeking restitution. Board Urged Archdiocese to Pull Priest, By Gretchen Ruethling 2/25/06 Chicago, Feb. 24 — “A review board of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago advised Cardinal Francis George to remove a priest accused of molesting young boys three months before he was arrested and removed from ministry, according to the state’s top child welfare agency official. The official, Bryan Samuels, director of the Department of Children and Family Services, said Friday in a telephone interview that the archdiocese refused to follow the board’s advice to remove the priest, the Rev. Daniel McCormack. Father McCormack of St. Agatha Catholic Church was removed from ministry last month when he was charged with sexually abusing three boys. One boy says he was abused as recently as December.” http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/25/national/25abuse.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

House retains some limits on clergy sex-abuse suits 3/29/06 Julie Carr Smyth AP Columbus – “State lawmakers dropped a proposal Tuesday to create a one-year window for victims of sexual abuse by clergy to file lawsuits in cases up to 35 years old. Victims’ advocates lambasted House Speaker Jon Husted for striking what they see as the bill’s most important provision, which would have allowed victims who missed the lawsuit deadline to sue for alleged abuse. Husted, Republican of Kettering, said leaders were unable to reach a compromise that suits church officials and an outspoken victims’ support network, whose members descended on the Statehouse the past two days.” http://www.cleveland.com/printer/printer.ssf?/base/news/114362518756070.xml&coll=2

Sex Abuse Bill Called ‘Victory’ For Church By Caryle Murphy Washington Post 3/27/06 “In a legislative victory for the Roman Catholic church, Maryland delegates rejected a bill that would have allowed older victims of child sexual abuse to sue the church and the priests who abused them. Instead, the House Judiciary Committee on Friday, and the House on Saturday, approved a bill that would allow victims 25 and younger when the law takes effect to file lawsuits until they reach age 42. Maryland law currently allows victims to bring lawsuits until their 25th birthday. There is no time limit for criminal prosecutions of those who sexually abuse a child in Maryland. Under intense lobbying from the church, the bill was amended so the time extension does not apply to victims who are now 25 and older. “Anybody who is under the age of 25 when this bill goes into effect will have the right to go to court extended to the age of 42,” said Del. Luiz R.S. Simmons (D-Montgomery). “But if you’re over the age of 25, that’s the key, you’re gone.”” http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/26/AR2006032600891_pf.html

Cardinals Scramble To Defeat Abuse Bills – Child Victims Would Get More Time to Sue in Md. By Caryle Murphy Washington Post 3/24/06 “Roman Catholic Church officials are putting a full-court press on Maryland legislators to reject bills that would extend the time allowed for victims of childhood sex abuse to file lawsuits against abusers and their employers. Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of the Washington archdiocese and Cardinal William H. Keeler of the Baltimore archdiocese have gotten involved, expressing opposition to the bills to House Judiciary Committee members directly or through intermediaries. The archdioceses also have hired a prominent Annapolis lobbying firm, Schwartz & Metz, to supplement the efforts of the Maryland Catholic Conference, their regular lobbying arm.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/23/AR2006032301776.html

How the Ohio Legislature Betrayed Child Victims of Clergy Abuse, and How We Can Stop It From Happening Nationwide By Marci Hamilton hamilton02@aol.com 4/6/06 “Last week, the Ohio House sent a bill to the Governor’s desk that requires clergy to report child abuse. That sounds like good news – but closer inspection shows the bill is extremely disappointing. And worse, it is not the only way Ohio has grievously let down victims of child abuse.” http://writ.news.findlaw.com/hamilton/20060406.html

Church lobbyists battle to limit abuse suits – More than a dozen states consider lifting statutes of limitations By Joe Feuerherd, Washington “In a series of emotional hearings taking place in state capitols across the country, clergy sex abuse victims and church lobbyists both say they want justice, though there’s no consensus on what that might look like or how to get there. Proposals in more than a dozen states would eliminate or temporarily suspend the statute of limitations on child abuse. Laws vary by jurisdiction, but typically forbid civil suits against alleged abusers and those who covered-up their crimes several years after the victim reaches age 18. Statute of limitations restrictions on criminal prosecutions tend to be more open-ended, but are also the subject of scrutiny in legislatures across the country. Legislative fights are hottest in Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts and Ohio. Other states where legislation has been introduced include Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington and Wisconsin.” http://ncronline.org/NCR_Online/archives2/2006a/033106/033106a.php

Rally held for sex abuse bills By Jean Torkelson, Rocky Mountain News 3/27/06 “About 30 activists joined lawmakers today on the state Capitol steps to urge passage of sex abuse bills and to heap blame on the Catholic Church for blocking their efforts. “My bill is about children no matter how it’s tried to be twisted,” Rep. Gwyn Green, D-Golden, sponsor of HB 1090, which was being debate by the Senate State Affairs Committee. Afterwards, Green said she was alluding to the Catholic Church’s efforts to block her measure. “I have never in my six years in the General Assembly had a bill so mischaracterized and my motives so impugned,” said Sen. Joan Fitz-Gerald, D-Coal Creek Canyon, who drafted Senate Bill 143.” http://www.rockymountainnews.com/

Chicago Archdiocese releases findings of priest abuse investigation – Nathaniel Hernandez AP Chicago 3/20/06 “A priest charged with molesting three boys had been accused years before of having questionable conduct with a minor while he was in the seminary and was still allowed to be ordained, according to a report released Monday that outlines a widespread breakdown in communication at the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago. The report, based on investigations conducted by two outside consultants and an internal review, said the archdiocese’s failure to follow its own procedures put children in harm’s way and might have violated Illinois law.” http://www.belleville.com/mld/belleville/news/politics/14144207.htm

Church officials react to sex abuse probe findings  By Theresa Gutierrez 3/21/06 “Roman Catholics reacted Tuesday to a list of priests accused of sexual misconduct. The list was released Monday by the Archdiocese of Chicago. It includes 17 names of priests who had not been associated with the church sex abuse scandal, until now. That list was released with a report that showed many priests accused of sexual misconduct have been allowed to remain anonymous. The report also says there were a number of occasions when church officials could have removed accused priests from ministry but did not. A recent independent auditing report criticizes Chicago Roman Catholic officials for their handling of sex abuse allegations against Rev. Daniel McCormack, as well as the archdiocese, procedures for monitoring priests accused of abusing minors.” http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=local&id=4012649&ft=print

Priest at the heart of ‘God’s Banker’ scandal dies at 84 By Rupert Cornwell in Washington 2/22/06 “Paul Marcinkus, the flamboyant Chicago-born priest at the helm of the Vatican bank for 18 years and a central figure in the scandal of “God’s Banker”, Roberto Calvi, died yesterday, at 84. Archbishop Marcinkus was found dead at his home in Sun City, a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, where he had retired after leaving Rome in 1990. He had lived his final years as a parish priest, steadfastly refusing to discuss the scandal which had brought such discredit on the Catholic Church….his efforts to improve the finances of the Holy See led him into disastrous entanglements, first with Michele Sindona, the Mafia-linked Italian banker, and then with Calvi, President of Banco Ambrosiano. Ambrosiano collapsed in June 1982, and Calvi was found dead in London, hanged beneath Blackfriars Bridge. Investigators quickly uncovered a network of tiny companies in Peru, Nicaragua and the Bahamas, many of them sponsored by the Vatican, in which Calvi had hidden some £700m of debts. Marcinkus himself was a board member of Ambrosiano’s subsidiary in Nassau, a conduit for many of the illicit transactions. Marcinkus denied responsibility, insisting he had been duped by Calvi. But the Vatican eventually paid £145m as settlement with Ambrosiano creditors.” http://news.independent.co.uk/europe/article346957.ece

The potential scale of the abuse has led to fears among Muslim leaders that Britain’s Mosque-based schools will face the kind of child abuse claims that has recently scandalised the Roman Catholic Church. Up to 100,000 children are taught at 700 Islamic schools, or madrassas, of which almost a half use unlawful corporal punishment to discipline pupils, says the report into child protection published today by the Muslim Parliament of Great Britain. The authors also warn that each year at least a dozen children are sexually abused by their teachers and Imans with very few cases ever being made public.” http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/legal/article352827.ece

Church sued over reported abuse – Seattle “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been accused in a lawsuit of persuading a 12-year-old boy not to cooperate with authorities after he reported that a Mormon priest sexually abused him. The suit claims the priest, who also was a Boy Scout Scoutmaster, victimized the boy around 1981 to 1983. The suit further claims the boy, who also belonged to the church, told his mother about the abuse, which she reported to church and civil authorities around 1984. But, the suit alleges, church officials pressured the boy not to cooperate, telling him he would not be believed. The boy gave in to the pressure, the suit says, and criminal charges against the man were not filed. He moved to another state and molested other children, according to the suit. He could not be reached for comment. The church in Seattle first learned of the allegations in 2003, when the accuser came forward, said Kim Farah, a church spokeswoman. The church has paid for his counseling and excommunicated the accused man, she said. Farah denied that church leaders pressured the boy to not cooperate.” http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/PrintStory.pl?document_id=2002885771&zsection_id=2002111777&slug=dige24m&date=20060324

INT’L WOMEN’S DAY: Parliamentarians Show Prostitution the Red Card Stefania Bianchi Brussels, 3/8/06 (IPS) – The European Union marked International Women’s Day Wednesday by launching a campaign against sexual exploitation of women during big sporting events. “European parliamentarians are calling on the European Commission, the European Union (EU) executive, to exert pressure on European governments to tighten border controls and step up efforts to identify women and children being moved illegally through EU countries to Germany during this summer’s football World Cup…..They say every year around 100,000 women become victims of human trafficking in Europe, and fear that several thousand girls and women will be sexually exploited during the competition. The European lawmakers say most of the women engaged in the business are victims of organised crime, lured by false promises of legal work abroad, and then forced to sell their bodies…..”We have a duty to shout loud, expose the disgrace of trafficking, and put the authorities under such pressure that they cannot turn a blind eye to it. Between 600,000 and 800,000 women and children are trafficked through international borders each year,” she said (Mary Honeyball).” http://www.ipsnews.net/interna.asp?idnews=32425

Mannheim soldier’s death has element of Masonic mystery GI found dead hours after scheduled secretive rite By Steve Mraz, Stars and Stripes 2/12/06 “Questions loom involving the details of Spc. Donald Anthony’s death. An autopsy was inconclusive. Mannheim, Germany — Weeks before Spc. Donald Anthony Wilder was found dead in a barracks shower, his parents say, he told them he knew he was going to be beaten. On Jan. 7, Wilder, 21, was set to become a third-degree Mason with the Prince Hall Masons in Mannheim. A radio communication security controller repairman with the 512th Maintenance Company, Wilder had become active with the Prince Hall Masons in the fall of 2005. The Prince Hall Masons are a predominantly black, secretive brotherhood. Similar to other branches of Masons, the group offers networking opportunities and performs community service. Several U.S. troops in Europe and around the world belong to the Prince Hall Masons. In order to become a third-degree Mason, Wilder knew he would have to endure being beaten on his buttocks with a paddle by fellow Masons.” http://www.estripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=34129&archive=true

As the Third Reich embarked upon its plan of conquest and genocide, IBM and its subsidiaries helped create enabling technologies, step-by-step, from the identification and cataloging programs of the 1930s to the selections of the 1940s. ” Http://www.ibmandtheholocaust.com/

MI6 payouts over secret LSD tests 2/24/06 “Three UK ex-servicemen have been given compensation after they were given LSD without their consent in the 1950s. The men volunteered to be “guinea pigs” at the government research base Porton Down after being told scientists wanted to find a cure for the common cold. But they were given the hallucinogen in mind control tests, and some volunteers had terrifying hallucinations. The Foreign Office said the secret intelligence body MI6 had made the settlements after legal advice….The men had volunteered for experiments at the government’s chemical warfare research base at Porton Down in Wiltshire in 1953 and 1954….MI6 scientists decided to test LSD, the closest thing they thought they had to a truth drug, on volunteers to see how they reacted…..Some volunteers at the base did not find out they had been given LSD until 50 years later. Thousands of servicemen and women have volunteered in the testing of defences against chemical and biological attacks at the Wiltshire military base. Research began in 1916 using a “volunteers programme”, and up to 20,000 people took part in various trials in the 50 years up to 1989. Last October, the government was found guilty of breaching the human rights of former soldier Thomas Roche, who claimed he developed health problems as a result of mustard gas and nerve agent tests in 1962 and 1963.” http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4745748.stm

describes crimes – Professor McCoy Exposes the History of CIA Interrogation, From the Cold War to the War on Terror 2/17/06 “A new expose gives an account of the CIA’s secret efforts to develop new forms of torture spanning fifty years. It reveals how the CIA perfected its methods, distributing them across the world from Vietnam to Iran to Central America, uncovering the roots of the Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo torture scandals. The book is titled “A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation, From the Cold War to the War on Terror.”….From 1950 to 1962, the C.I.A. ran a massive research project, a veritable Manhattan Project of the mind, spending over $1 billion a year to crack the code of human consciousness, from both mass persuasion and the use of coercion in individual interrogation. And what they discovered — they tried LSD, they tried mescaline, they tried all kinds of drugs, they tried electroshock, truth serum, sodium pentathol. None of it worked. What worked was very simple behavioral findings, outsourced to our leading universities — Harvard, Princeton, Yale and McGill — and the first breakthrough came at McGill. And it’s in the book. And here, you can see the — this is the — if you want show it, you can. That graphic really shows — that’s the seminal C.I.A. experiment done in Canada and McGill University….Dr. Donald O. Hebb of McGill University, a brilliant psychologist, had a contract from the Canadian Defense Research Board, which was a partner with the C.I.A. in this research, and he found that he could induce a state of psychosis in an individual within 48 hours. It didn’t take electroshock, truth serum, beating or pain. All he did was had student volunteers sit in a cubicle with goggles, gloves and headphones, earmuffs, so that they were cut off from their senses, and within 48 hours, denied sensory stimulation, they would suffer, first hallucinations, then ultimately breakdown.” http://www.democracynow.org/print.pl?sid=06/02/17/1522228

Missing since 8th grade, woman rejoins family 3/24/06 By Dan Nephin, McKeesport, Pa. “As an eighth-grader in 1995, Tanya Nicole Kach skipped class one day and was caught by a school security guard. In a stairwell, the troubled teenager and the guard who was more than twice her age began kissing, according to the story she told authorities. Soon, they hatched a plan for her to run away from home and live with him….Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said Kach wasn’t allowed out of Hose’s house for the first four years. Kach said she used a bucket as a bathroom, kept bottled water nearby and wore secondhand clothes for most of the 10 years she stayed with Hose in the tiny two-story frame house. Hose and Kach began a sexual relationship soon after she ran away, and it continued into adulthood, according to the charges against Hose. Moffatt said Hose used ”mind games” to control what Kach wore and where she went and to convince her that her parents, who are now divorced, didn’t care about her.” http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-miss24.html

Violence Vict 2005 Dec; 20(6):717-28. “College students who wrote about childhood physical or sexual abuse benefited from any type of structured writing assignment (where they interacted with a researcher and got extra credit) in terms of reduced anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideas, but they found value in writing about their trauma more than writing about innocuous topics.” University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS 39406-5025, USA.

Containing and Resisting Masculinity: Narratives of Renegotiation Among Resilient Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse by Maryam Kia-Keating, Frances K. Grossman, Lynn Sorsoli, Marina Epstein “Male childhood sexual abuse survivors face the same social pressures as other men to live up to the tenets of masculinity. However, they contend with a disjuncture between cultural definitions of manhood and the discordant experience of sexual victimization. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 resilient men varying in age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. The authors analyzed the men’s narratives concerning male role socialization for toughness, stoicism, and aggressive sexuality, as well as the impact of childhood sexual abuse. Results indicate that in their paths toward recovery, the participants repeatedly described both containing and resisting traditional masculine roles and made conscious choices not to become perpetrators. The importance of raising awareness about masculinity myths in clinical interventions is discussed. FBI issues statistics on missing children – 33 percent were black in 2005; 58 percent were girls 3/10/06 By Thomas Hargrove – Scripps Howard News Service – Washington “The FBI, for the first time, has complied with a 1990 act of Congress by issuing a public accounting of 662,196 lost, runaway and kidnapped children reported by police to state and federal authorities last year….The FBI data show that two-thirds of all missing-children reports were for 15-, 16- or 17-year-old youths. Only 2,223 infants were reported last year. The files also show that local police classified 16,897 cases — or slightly less than 3 percent — as “endangered,” meaning authorities feared the children had been kidnapped or were in the company of a dangerous adult.” http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/262495_kids10.html

Child Abuse Negl. 2006 Mar 6; …”RESULTS: Thirty-seven patients (48%) reported a history of CSA before the onset of the eating disorder. Individuals with a history of CSA reported significantly greater psychiatric comorbidity, including higher levels of depression and anxiety, lower self-esteem, more interpersonal problems, and more severe obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Patients with the binge-purge subtype of AN (anorexia nervosa)(AN-BP) were significantly more likely to report a history of CSA prior to the onset of the eating disorder as compared with patients with the restricting subtype (AN-R) of the illness (65% of the AN-BP patients vs. 37% of the AN-R patients; p<.02)….CONCLUSIONS: Consistent with previous findings, the present results indicate that the prevalence of CSA is high among individuals seeking inpatient treatment for AN. A history of CSA was associated with greater psychiatric disturbance overall and a higher rate of dropout for patients of the binge-purge subtype.” Department of Psychiatry, Toronto General Hospital, University Health Network, Toronto, Ont., Canada; Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ont., Canada.

Early Environment, Emotions, Responses to Stress, and Health – Shelley E. Taylor, Jennifer S. Lerner, Rebecca M. Sage, Barbara J. Lehman, Teresa E. Seeman ABSTRACT “A harsh early family environment is related to mental and physical health in adulthood. An important question is why family environment in childhood is associated with these outcomes so long after its initial occurrence. We describe a program of research that evaluates a model linking these variables to each other. Specifically, we hypothesize that low social competence and negative emotional states may mediate relations between a harsh early family environment and physiological/neuroendocrine responses to stress, as well as long-term health outcomes. We report evidence that the model characterizes self-rated health, cortisol responses to stress, and, in males only, elevated cardiovascular responses.” http://computing.hss.cmu.edu/lernerlab/pdfs/Taylor_2004_JP_Paper.pdf
