Judge denies Vatican’s motion in abuse case 6/7/06 by William McCall AP Portland, Ore.”A federal judge ruled Wednesday that a sex abuse lawsuit against the Vatican can move forward with its claim that the Holy See bears responsibility for a priest who was transferred from city to city, including Chicago, even though he was known to be a molester. U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman said in his decision that there are exceptions to the Foreign Sovereign Immunity Act, under which the Vatican typically is immune from the jurisdiction of U.S. courts. Rejecting the Vatican’s bid to dismiss the case, Mosman ruled there was enough of a connection between the Vatican and the priest, who died in 1970, for him to be considered a Vatican employee under Oregon law.” http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/vatican07.html

Nuns hid abuse at St. Joseph’s for 50 years – 6/9/06 “The nuns who ran St Joseph’s orphanage in Kilkenny knew as far back as 1954 that children in their care were being abused. The revelations come just days after the head of the order refused to apologise to those who suffered sexual abuse in the order’s orphanage at St Joseph’s Road in the city. Department of education inspector Anna McCabe reported in 1954 that nine girls had been abused by a painter employed by the Sisters of Charity. At the time it was argued by a priest that a court case would bring the convent into disrepute and that the experience would mark the children for life if they were called to give evidence. Following his advice, Ms McCabe agreed no prosecution should be taken. It has also emerged that the nun in charge of the orphanage challenged a paedophile in Dublin about his sexual depravity at St Joseph’s more than a quarter of a century ago.” http://www.kilkennypeople.ie/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=2594&ArticleID=1549064
£60,000 compensation for victims who suffered at the hands of nuns 8/16/06 Michael Howie “Victims of abuse by nuns at Catholic children’s homes in Scotland have been awarded state compensation totalling more than £60,000. The awards have been made to 18 former residents at orphanages run by the Congregation of the Poor Sisters of Nazareth in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock and are likely to open the floodgates for criminal-injuries payments to scores of others. The victims come from all over Scotland and suffered a catalogue of abuse in the homes during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. About 100 people who attended the homes have applied to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) for payouts.” http://news.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=305

Missouri high court allows church abuse case on repressed Memory Kelly Wiese AP Jefferson City, Mo. “A man who claims to have recalled childhood sexual abuse by clergy decades after it occurred can move forward with a lawsuit, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled Tuesday. The case, which is being watched closely by advocates for sexual abuse victims, turns on the state deadline for filing lawsuits, which is triggered not by when a wrongdoing is committed, but by when victims are capable of realizing the damage they suffered. Michael Powel contends he was sexually abused by two instructors while attending Chaminade College Preparatory School, a Catholic boarding school in St. Louis County, from 1973 to 1975. But Powel claims he did not recall the abuse until 2000, when he began receiving treatment for brain cancer.” http://www.belleville.com/mld/belleville/news/state/14810021.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp

Aide: Church knew of priest’s woes Court documents paint a disturbing picture of a priest who is accused of molesting young boys. 7/22/06 by Wanda J. Demarzo “As early as the mid-1970s, the Archdiocese of Miami was aware of allegations that the Rev. Neil Doherty had been having inappropriate relationships with young boys, the priest’s longtime secretary told prosecutors investigating sexual molestation charges against him. The secretary’s statement, released Friday among documents that are part of the criminal case against the priest, represents the first time that someone within the archdiocese has confirmed what victims have alleged for years: that church leaders knew about the allegations.” http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/local/states/florida/counties/broward_county/15096639.htm

Paedophile priest was given post at school for the deaf – Campaigners demand inquiry into ‘reign of sexual terror’ Antony Barnett and Ali Beach 8/6/06 The Observer “The Roman Catholic Church covered up the criminal past of a paedophile priest and gave him a job in a school for deaf children where he went on to sexually assault vulnerable young boys, an Observer investigation can reveal. The church is now facing a massive compensation claim from the victims of the priest, Father Neil Gallanagh, who accuse the authorities of ‘wilful neglect’. Child abuse campaigners are calling for a public inquiry into the case, which they claim led to a ‘reign of sexual terror’ for some boys at the school. Last year Gallanagh, 75, pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting two pupils of St John’s Roman Catholic School for the Deaf in Wetherby, West Yorkshire.” http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,1838319,00.html

13 sue archdiocese over abuse – The class-action suit says the Phila. Archdiocese violated conspiracy, racketeering laws. An expert called it a long shot. By John Shiffman and Craig R. McCoy Inquirer Staff Writers 6/16/06 “People alleging abuse by Catholic priests mounted a new legal challenge against the Archdiocese of Philadelphia yesterday, alleging that the church cover-up violated federal conspiracy and racketeering laws. Thirteen people – saying they represented all victims abused by priests in the diocese since 1940 – filed the class-action lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia. The suit alleges the responsibility for the abuse lies at the top, naming Cardinal Justin Rigali, Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua and the late Cardinal John Krol as defendants.” http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/news/nation/14829318.htm

Group asks U.S. judge to rebuff archdiocese By Michael Hinkleman hinkelm@phillynews.com 215-854-2656 – 8/2/06 – “A dozen people who are suing the Archdiocese of Philadelphia yestersday asked a federal judge to turn aside the archdiocese’s request to dismiss a class-action lawsuit filed against it and its current and former top leaders. The lawsuit alleges that the archdiocese and its officials violated federal racketeering and conspiracy laws when they allegedly covered up cases of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests. The new court filing by the plaintiffs said their lawsuit should not be dismissed unless it “appeared” that they could not prove any facts to support their claims for damages. A Philadelphia grand jury report last year blasted the archdiocese and its leaders, accusing them of hiding and enabling the sexual abuse of hundreds of children by 63 Catholic clergy here over several decades.” http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/news/local/15177657.htm

Sex abuse victims settle with Archdiocese 8/9/06 By Carina Corral “Many people who said they were molested at a Santa Barbara seminary by Franciscan friars, dropped their cases after reaching a settlement with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. In March, a settlement was thought to be reached, but victims and the Catholic Church had to go back for another round of talks to iron out some differences. A final agreement was reached last week, and the Los Angeles Diocese awarded 26 victims more than $28 million. Most said the sexual abuse happened at St. Anthony’s Seminary and the Santa Barbara Mission between 1964 and 1987.” http://www.ksby.com/home/headlines/3535371.html

Church probes 24 paedo-priests Pearlie Joubert 7/28/06 “‘The Catholic Church in South Africa is currently investigating at least 24 incidents of sexual abuse by priests — 12 cases in Cape Town alone. Some of these are “historical cases” and happened years ago. In most of them, the victims were children when the sexual abuse took place. Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference (SACBC) general secretary Father Vincent Brennan said this week: “We do recognise that there is a problem. We don’t see this as a Catholic problem, though — it’s a problem in our society. As far as I know, 4% of the adult male population internationally abuse children. Our levels of abuse in South Africa are higher.” http://www.mg.co.za/articlePage.aspx?articleid=279080&area=/insight/insight__national/

The 86-year-old Bradford man said he was indecently assaulted by a member of the same Christian Brotherhood at the centre of sexual abuse allegations at a Catholic children’s home in East Yorkshire. More than 140 men are pursuing a civil claim for compensation against the De La Salle Order of Christian Brotherhood, which ran the St William’s children’s home in Market Weighton, and the Diocese of Middlesbrough, which owned it, over sexual abuse allegations between 1962 and 1992. The claimants include seven men from Bradford, three of whom have come forward since the Telegraph & Argus revealed the compensation fight last week. The principal of the home, Brother James Carragher, 68, is serving a 14-year prison sentence for abusing 22 boys.” http://www.thisisbradford.co.uk/news/tibnews/display.var.878640.0.man_86_claims_abuse_75_years_ago.php

Nonprofits liable for staff who sexually abuse kids 8/9/06 By Gregory J. Volpe Gannett State Bureau Trenton “State law does not shield nonprofits from liability for staff members who sexually abuse children, the state Supreme Court ruled Tuesday. The court ruled that the American Boychoir School in Princeton does not get protection from the state’s Charitable Immunity Act because it applies only to negligence claims. John W. Hardwicke Jr. sued the school and several employees in 2001, claiming the music director, Donald Hanson, other employees and students abused him when he was a child attending the school in the early 1970s. Hanson now lives in Canada and no longer works at the school.” http://www.courierpostonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2006608090403

About 1,000 files, with names redacted, have been given to the lawyers for three men who say their scoutmaster abused them from 1971 to 1983 when they were Boy Scouts. The files are sealed by court order for now but could be made public at trial, plaintiff’s attorney Tim Kosnoff said.” http://www.baltimoresun.com/

Predators beware – Local agents target suspected child molesters 8/7/06 By Stacia Glenn

“A seedy subculture swimming with child predators is submerged in every community, skulking just beneath the surface of society. Parents typically think their neighborhoods are safe. They drop the kids off to teachers, priests and Boy Scout leaders without ever doubting their safety. They dismissively shake their heads at the thought someone they know could be abusing youngsters. But predators don’t just lurk in shadows. Oftentimes they are invited into our homes, looked up to as role models and considered above suspicion. Knowing this, they prey upon the most vulnerable members of society — again and again.” http://www.dailybulletin.com/
UN probes child prostitute ring – Some 17,000 UN troops are serving in DR Congo 8/17/06 “The United Nations is investigating allegations that some of its peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo have used child prostitutes. It said there were reports that a child prostitution ring was operating in the east, close to a large concentration of UN troops and government soldiers. A UN probe last year found that peacekeepers in DR Congo had sexually abused girls as young as 13. Afterwards it banned its troops from having sex with locals. The investigation revealed that UN peacekeepers had used food and money to pay girls to have sex with them.” http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/5260210.stm

Hundreds of children are slaves in UK, say charities 6/4/06 By Jonathan Owen “Children, some only six years old, are arriving in the UK in their hundreds each year to work illegally in cannabis factories and sweatshops around the country, according to a report by a coalition of leading charities. They come from as far afield as Africa, Asia and eastern Europe, trafficked by organised crime gangs in what is described by child campaigners as a “cruel and shocking exploitation of children”. Many are taken with the naïve blessing of parents who pay up to £3,000 in the hope that their children will have a better life than they can provide back home, reports The Sunday Telegraph.” http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/article624675.ece Mom termed ‘parental alienator’ wins rare vindication in courts by Troy Anderson “Former San Fernando resident Irene Jensen battled the family court and child protective systems for 13 years to save her daughter from an allegedly abusive father. But the system turned the tables on her: Jensen found herself accused of making up the allegations and in the glare of the national spotlight when she was labeled a “parental alienator.” Her daughter, Tiffany-Ann Carver, now 17, spent years in the custody of her father, a Hawthorne city employee who denies Jensen’s claims. Tiffany eventually ran away and sought the assistance of the Alliance for Children’s Rights, which helped place her in a foster home. Late last year, a Los Angeles judge returned Tiffany to the custody of her mother, court records show.” http://www.dailynews.com/

MEXICO: Child Sexual Exploitation Fuelled, Protected by Economic Clout Adrián Reyes “Mexico City, 7/27/06 (IPS) – While the Mexican government is touting the imprisonment of businessman Jean Succar, accused of running a child sex ring, as evidence of its tough stance against child sexual exploitation, authorities also admit that the number of minors subjected to such crimes has increased from 16,000 to 20,000 over the last six years. Paedophilia and sexual exploitation of minors are not classified as serious offences in almost half of Mexico’s 31 states, increasing the likelihood of impunity, according to Ana Rosa Payán, general director of the Office and System of Integral Development for Family Welfare (DIF), created in 1970.” http://www.ipsnews.org/news.asp?idnews=34126

Child victims must sue by 20 – Ruling could wipe out scores of suits against priests by Dan Horn | Enquirer Staff Writer “Ohioans who accuse Catholic priests of abusing them as children must sue by age 20 or their cases will be thrown out, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled Wednesday. The court’s 5-2 decision could wipe out dozens of lawsuits across the state that accused priests of sexual abuse. The ruling is a setback to abuse victims and their advocates, who wanted the court to extend Ohio’s time limit for filing lawsuits.” http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060601/NEWS01/606010381

Papers: CIA knew of Eichmann Whereabouts by Hope Yen, AP 6/6/2006 Washington “Determined to win the Cold War, the CIA kept quiet about the whereabouts of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in the 1950s for fear he might expose undercover anticommunist efforts in West Germany, according to documents released Tuesday. The 27,000 pages released by the National Archives are among the largest post-World War II declassifications by the CIA. They offer a window into the shadowy world of U.S. intelligence — and the efforts to use former Nazi war criminals as spies, sometimes to detrimental effect.” http://news.yahoo.com/

Set adrift – As victims of child abuse come of age, religious and legal concerns collide By Elizabeth Neff The Salt Lake Tribune (mailto:eneff@sltrib.com) 6/10/06 “Dave was a Mormon bishop, a family man, a bank vice president known for getting neighborhood kids jobs. “I could sit here for probably two hours and tell you all the things he did for our family,” said his former neighbor, Linda. “He did it for tons of families.” But when Linda’s teenaged son, Casey, turned to Dave for advice, prosecutors would charge years later, the bishop would sexually abuse the boy. Casey kept that secret for years, finally confiding in a friend. His parents were devastated when he told them. Now 29, Casey says Dave stole something from him that he can’t get back. “I believe I would have been a completely different person if it hadn’t happened to me,” he says. Dave’s ecclesiastical leaders would excommunicate Dave, but they did not report Casey’s allegations to police. Those leaders say there were good reasons for that decision, but the family feels betrayed. It was Casey’s mother who reported Dave, and in April 2004 he was charged with six felony counts of child sexual abuse. A year later, prosecutors delivered another blow to the family: Because of a legal technicality, Dave could not be brought to trial.”

Production companies under contract with the two television networks began working in Toledo yesterday on local interviews for prime-time shows that could be aired as early as August. The trial of Gerald Robinson, the Catholic priest who was convicted last month of killing the nun in the chapel of the former Mercy Hospital, attracted national attention.” http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060621/NEWS02/606210405

describes crimes Priest’s abuse accuser says limitations law doesn’t apply 7/19/06 by David Yonke, Blade Religion Editor “A Toledo woman who sued Gerald Robinson in April, 2005, accusing the Roman Catholic priest of torturing and raping her in satanic rituals when she was a child, has filed a motion claiming the statute of limitations did not start ticking until she knew her abuser’s identity. The motion filed Monday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court said the unidentified victim did not know Robinson’s name until she saw him on television after his April 23, 2004, arrest for the 1980 ritual killing of Sister Margaret Ann Pahl. “I recognized him the minute I [saw] him on TV,” the plaintiff said yesterday in a telephone interview with The Blade. Robinson, 68, was convicted of murder on May 11 in Common Pleas Court and is serving a 15-years-to-life sentence in the Warren Correctional Facility in southern Ohio. He is believed to be the first U.S. Roman Catholic priest convicted of murdering a Roman Catholic nun….Survivor Doe, now in her early 40s, claims the abuse began in 1968 when she was 5 years old and continued until 1975. In addition to allegations that she was raped and sexually abused, the woman claims Robinson, Mr. Mazuchowski, and other adults wearing nuns’ clothing cut her with a knife as a sacrifice to Satan, killed a rabbit and made her drink its blood, and drew an upside down cross on her stomach. Mr. Mazuchowski and attorneys for Robinson and the diocese have denied the woman’s allegations.” http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060719/NEWS02/607190419

from LMS A woman’s quest for treatment – Plagued with multiple personalities, ‘Susan’ hopes her odd-jobs business will raise enough money for controversial medical treatment. Louise Dickson, Times Colonist 7/11/06 “This is the story of one woman’s campaign to raise money for psychotherapy treatment for a controversial mental disorder. She says her name is Susan. But that’s not the name on her driver’s licence. Susan says the name on the licence belongs to a Victoria woman who suffered horrific, sexual, mental and emotional abuse for more than 30 years. Although the woman — let’s call her Jane — has changed in appearance she does not want her real name used because she still fears abusive family members. Jane had a breakdown 10 years ago. A psychiatrist at Eric Martin Pavilion told her that her mind had shattered into hundreds of different identities. Susan is one of the 261 identities who rattle around in Jane’s body and the one talking today about the challenges she faces…. Susan says Jane was abused from the age of one until she escaped at 34. Her mother was neglectful and cruel. Her father, who wandered around with shotguns, was crazy. He tortured animals, blaming her for the atrocities he committed, and telling her the same thing would happen to her if she told family secrets. She was raped, threatened, subjected to barbarous acts, Susan says. “We were stuck in a satanic cult world with bicycle gangs. There was devil-worshipping, sacrifices. Everything was my fault.” http://www.canada.com/victoriatimescolonist/news/capital_van_isl/story.html?id=f25ea189-401d-46b4-9bf0-f8631ed2da5d

Woman, priest say abuser still in public ministry Matt C. Abbott 7/1/06 “Judith Weiss Collins of Lehigh Valley, Pa., alleges that a priest of the Allentown diocese — still in public ministry — raped her at gunpoint on two separate occasions, once in 1985 and once in 1988. She also alleges she had been ritually abused by the same priest from 1961 through 1968 on the property of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in the Philadelphia archdiocese. She was 9-years-old in 1961. Collins says she did report the two alleged rapes to the assistant DA in Northampton County in 2002; the alleged ritual abuse was reported to the DA’s office in Philadelphia; and Crime Victims Council was notified in 1985 and again in 2002. She also says two diocesan officials found her account credible and apologized to her, but that the accused priest denied the allegations when confronted by the bishop.” http://www.renewamerica.us/

Australian man accuses priest of ritual abuse By Bill Frogameni 7/28/06 “In 2002, the Melbourne, Australia, archdiocese paid a legal settlement to a man who alleged a priest abused him in satanic rituals. The alleged victim, a 56-year-old Australian who asked to be identified by the pseudonym “James T.,” also claims he witnessed at least three brutal murders that took place during the rituals. The man’s claims became public May 26 when Australian crime reporter Gary Hughes broke the story simultaneously in the country’s largest daily papers, all of which are owned by the News Corp media conglomerate. James T. claims he was abused starting at age 11 in 1961 by Fr. Thomas O’Keefe, a priest of the Melbourne archdiocese. He said the abuse lasted about three years. During that time, he claims O’Keefe and others — most of whom he says he cannot positively identify — performed satanic rituals and killed at least three people.” National Catholic Reporter, July 28, 2006

from LMS The Monkey Puzzle Tree By Elizabeth Nickson – Alfred A. Knopf Canada, Toronto, 1994, pp. 277, $27.00 Reviewed by Andrea Schluter “The non-fiction writings of Anne Collins, In the Sleep Room, and Gordon Thomas, Journey into Madness, both published in 1988, are revealing and horrifying accounts of the CIA-funded brain-washing experiments performed at the Allen Memorial Institute in Montreal during the 50s and 60s. But The Monkey Puzzle Tree relates, in a fictional account, the effects of these abuses on one woman, and the resulting deterioration of her family. from LMS Shortage of test subjects has researchers eyeing prisons – Plan prevents abuses of past, say backers — others not so sure Ian Urbina, New York Times 8/13/06 Philadelphia “An influential federal panel of medical advisers has recommended that the government loosen regulations that severely limit the testing of pharmaceuticals on prison inmates, a practice that was all but stopped three decades ago after revelations of abuse. The proposed change includes provisions intended to prevent problems that plagued earlier programs. Nevertheless, it has dredged up a painful history of medical mistreatment and sparked debate among prisoner-rights advocates and researchers about whether prisoners can truly make uncoerced decisions, given the environment they live in. Supporters of such programs cite the possibility of benefit to prison populations, and the potential for contributing to the greater good. Until the early 1970s, about 90 percent of all pharmaceutical products were tested on prison inmates, federal officials say. But such research diminished sharply in 1974 after revelations of abuse at prisons like Holmesburg in Philadelphia, where inmates were paid hundreds of dollars a month to test items as varied as dandruff treatments and dioxin, and where they were exposed to radioactive, hallucinogenic and carcinogenic chemicals. In addition to addressing the abuses at Holmesburg, the regulations were a reaction to revelations in 1972 surrounding what the government called the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male, which was begun in the 1930s and lasted 40 years. In it, several hundred, mostly illiterate, men with syphilis in rural Alabama were left untreated, even after a cure was discovered, so that researchers could study the disease.” http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2006/08/13/MNGFMKHJ7S1.DTL

Polygamist’s daughter on FBI wanted list 8/13/06 “Salt Lake City – Houston’s FBI office has placed the fugitive daughter of a deceased Utah polygamist on the agency’s “most wanted” list after getting a tip about the woman from a relative in prison. Jacqueline Tarsa LeBaron is wanted in connection with four 1988 murders in Houston and Irving, Texas, according to a wanted poster on the agency’s Web site. She’s been a fugitive since 1992.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060813/ap_on_re_us/polygamy_lebaron
Documents Shed Light on CIA’s Use of Ex-Nazis By Scott Shane – The New York Times 6/6/2006 Washington “The Central Intelligence Agency took no action after learning the pseudonym and whereabouts of the fugitive Holocaust overseer Adolf Eichmann in 1958, according to CIA documents that shed new light on the spy agency’s use of former Nazis as informers after World War II. The CIA was told by West German intelligence that Eichmann was living in Argentina under the name “Clemens” – a slight variation on his actual alias, Klement – but kept the information from Israel because of German concerns about exposure of former Nazis in the Bonn government, according to Timothy Naftali, a historian who examined the documents. Two years later, Israeli agents abducted Eichmann in Argentina and took him to Israel, where he was tried and executed in 1962.” http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060606R.shtml

Early Warning Signs of Switching: Recognition & Avoidance Techniques By Sara Lambert “One of the most common fears of multiples is that they will switch inappropriately in public. Not only is this embarrassing at times and hard to explain to those who do not know the survivor is multiple, it can also be dangerous. For these reasons, it is important to develop awareness of how to recognise the early warning signals of switching and have a variety of techniques for avoiding switching when necessary.” http://home.mchsi.com/~ftio/diss-signs-switching.htm

from LMS describes crimes Dog, other animals mutilated – Investigators say a religious link is possible Victoria E. Freile 6/28/06 “Several recent animal beheadings in Rochester may be linked to a religious ritual, Humane Society officials believe. Tuesday morning a passerby found three deceased animals — a mutilated goat and three beheaded chickens — bundled together in a white sack and left at the corner of North Clinton Avenue and Avenue D. The goat’s front legs, head and intestines had been removed. Over the weekend, someone apparently killed a white goat and five chickens and left their beheaded bodies — along with three pennies.” http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060628/NEWS01/606280405/1002/NEWS&template=printart

Surfing the Web with nothing but brainwaves – Kiss your keyboard goodbye: Soon we’ll jack our brains directly into the Net – and that’s just the beginning. By Chris Taylor, Business 2.0 Magazine senior editor 7/24/06 “San Francisco (Business 2.0 Magazine) Two years ago, a quadriplegic man started playing video games using his brain as a controller. That may just sound like fun and games for the unfortunate, but really, it spells the beginning of a radical change in how we interact with computers – and business will never be the same. Someday, keyboards and computer mice will be remembered only as medieval-style torture devices for the wrists. All work – emails, spreadsheets, and Google searches – will be performed by mind control.” http://money.cnn.com/2006/07/21/technology/googlebrain0721.biz2/

Kim Kubal, a ritual abuse survivor, is writing a book entitled “The Power to Heal”. She would love to receive submissions from survivors on their healing journey from ritual abuse to recovery. At the end of each story, please elaborate on one or two healing tools and therapy tools which have been most helpful to them. She is also looking for clinicians to contribute healing tools which they have used in working with survivors. In addition, she wants healing tools from caregivers or spouses who have helped a survivor heal from ritual abuse. Kim would like to have each story approximately two pages in length. It can be written with a pseudonym or real name. The deadline for these stories is October 2006. “The Power to Heal” is a compilation of survivor stories and their healing tools, therapists and caregivers healing tools and general healing tools for survivors. It also includes different forms of therapies used by survivors, and an extensive Resource Guide. This book is not only to help survivors, loved ones of survivors and the therapeutic community, but also to educate the general public on ritual abuse and recovery from this abuse.

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Inc. Volume 194(2), February 2006, pp 78-82 Dissociative Symptoms and Trauma Exposure: Specificity, Affect Dysregulation, and Posttraumatic Stress – Briere, John PhD “Analysis of the normative data for the Multiscale Dissociation Inventory revealed significant dissociative symptoms in only 8% of trauma-exposed individuals from the general population. However, 90% of those with at least one clinically significant dissociation scale on the Multiscale Dissociation Inventory reported a trauma history, and significant dissociation was found in only 2% of nontraumatized individuals. A history of interpersonal violence, number of different types of trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress, and affect dysregulation were univariate predictors of dissociative symptomatology in trauma-exposed participants, but only posttraumatic stress and affect dysregulation were multivariate predictors.” http://www.johnbriere.com/JNMD%2006%20paper.html#35

Manchester academic to tell conferences: Child abuse can cause schizophrenia University of Manchester researcher Paul Hammersley is to tell two international conferences, in London and Madrid on 14 June 2006, that child abuse can cause schizophrenia. The groundbreaking and highly contentious theory, co-presented by New Zealand clinical psychologist Dr John Read, has been described as “an earthquake” that will radically change the psychiatric profession….Mr Hammersley, Programme Director for the COPE (Collaboration of Psychosocial Education) Initiative at the School of Nursing Midwifery and Social Work, said: “We are not returning to the 1960s and making the mistake of blaming families, but professionals have to realize that child abuse was a reality for large numbers of adult sufferers of psychosis.” “Hammersley and Read argue that two-thirds of people diagnosed as schizophrenic have suffered physical or sexual abuse and thus it is shown to be a major, if not the major, cause of the illness. With a proven connection between the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia, they say, many schizophrenic symptoms are actually caused by trauma. Their evidence includes 40 studies, which revealed childhood or adulthood sexual or physical abuse in the history of the majority of psychiatric patients and a review of 13 studies of schizophrenics found abuse rates from a low of 51% to a high of 97%. Psychiatric patients who report abuse are much more likely to experience hallucinations – flashbacks which have become part of the schizophrenic experience and hallucinations or voices that bully them as their abuser did thus causing paranoia and a mistrust of people close to them.” http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-06/uom-mat061306.php

Wolves in sheep’s clothing Vol. 68, Issue 2 2006 – Most child molesters blend into the background By S/Sgt Matt Logan, Ph.D RCMP Major Crime Unit, Vancouver “Child molesters are often portrayed as greasy, dirty, unkempt individuals who sneak into our towns and snatch our children. The reality is most sexual offenders of children don’t stand out, and are well known to the victim and the victim’s parents or caretakers. The majority of children are seduced when these molesters play on their emotions, establish their trust and give affection.” http://www.gazette.rcmp.gc.ca/article-en.html?category_id=1&article_id=247

The Truth About Parental Alienation Syndrome And The American Psychological Association Compiled by Trish Wilson – Statement by Professor Joan S. Meier, Esq. (November 9, 2005) “APA’s authoritative Report on Violence in the Family pointedly criticizes the misuse of PAS in domestic violence cases and unequivocally finds that there is no scientific evidence of such a “syndrome.” In 1996 a leading task force of the APA published a widely disseminated and relied-upon report: Titled “Violence and the Family,” written by the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family, and published by the American Psychological Association, it is based on a comprehensive review of the literature and research on violence in the family. The Report states, among other things: “When children reject their abusive fathers, it is common for the batterer and others to blame the mother for alienating the children. They often do not understand the legitimate fears of the child. Although there are no data to support the phenomenon called parental alienation syndrome, in which mothers are blamed for interfering with their children’s attachment to their fathers, the term is still used by some evaluators and courts to discount children’s fears in hostile and psychologically abusive situations.” (page 40)” http://members.aol.com/asherah/meier1.html

Neural Systems Underlying the Suppression of Unwanted Memories – Michael C. Anderson, Kevin N. Ochsner, Brice Kuhl, Jeffrey Cooper, Elaine Robertson, Susan W. Gabrieli, Gary H. Glover, John D. E. Gabrieli “Over a century ago, Freud proposed that unwanted memories can be excluded from awareness, a process called repression. It is unknown, however, how repression occurs in the brain. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify the neural systems involved in keeping unwanted memories out of awareness. Controlling unwanted memories was associated with increased dorsolateral prefrontal activation, reduced hippocampal activation, and impaired retention of those memories. Both prefrontal cortical and right hippocampal activations predicted the magnitude of forgetting. These results confirm the existence of an active forgetting process and establish a neurobiological model for guiding inquiry into motivated forgetting.” http://memorycontrol.uoregon.edu/ao2004.pdf

from BO Survivors of childhood sexual abuse diagnosed with cancer: Managing the impact of early trauma on cancer treatment. Gallo-Silver L, Weiner MO J Psychosoc Oncol 24(1):107-34, 2006 “The incidence of survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) diagnosed with cancer is unknown. It is estimated that one in three women and one in six men in the United States are survivors of CSA….All 18 survivors of CSA experienced distressing memories of their abuse during their cancer treatment. Fifteen CSA survivors presented traumatic memories that were inaccessible to conscious thought processes prior to their cancer diagnosis.” Author contact: 275 7th Ave, 22nd Floor, New York, NY, 10001, lgallo@cancercare.org.

Anda, R., Felitti, V., Bremner, J., Walker, J., Whitfield, C., Perry, B., et al. (2006). The enduring effects of abuse and related adverse experiences in childhood. European Archives of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience, 256(3), 174-186. “RESULTS: Based upon logistic regression analysis, the risk of every outcome in the affective, somatic, substance abuse, memory, sexual, and aggression related domains increased in a graded fashion as the ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) score increased (P <0.001). The mean number of comorbid outcomes tripled across the range of the ACE score. CONCLUSIONS: The graded relationship of the ACE score to 18 different outcomes in multiple domains theoretically parallels the cumulative exposure of the developing brain to the stress response with resulting impairment in multiple brain structures and functions.”

“Research Examining Accuracy of Returned Memories – Recently there has been considerable controversy about the validity of recovered memories of past traumas….studies comparing continuous and delayed memories have found them to be of similar accuracy. Further support for this conclusion can be found in a number of case reports where trauma, memory loss, and spontaneous recovery of accurate memory were each documented…Research has repeatedly shown that when abuse reports are analyzed, false reports are found to be statistically rare.” http://www.leadershipcouncil.org/1/tm/acc.html

from BO Trauma and dissociation in China. Xiao Z, Yan H, Wang Z, Zou Z, Xu M D Y, Chen M D J, Zhang M D H, Ross CA, Keyes BB Am J Psychiatry 163:8:1388-91, 2006 “There is virtually no popular or professional knowledge of dissociative identity disorder in China, and therefore professional and popular contamination cannot exist….RESULTS: Dissociative disorders were diagnosed in 24 respondents by structured interview, and 15 respondents fell into the dissociative taxon on the Dissociative Experiences Scale. The outpatients reported the highest rates of childhood physical and/or sexual abuse and of pathological dissociation. CONCLUSIONS: Pathological dissociation can be detected readily among psychiatric outpatients in China but is much less common in the general population. Pathological dissociation is more frequent in more traumatized subsamples of the Chinese population. The findings are not consistent with the sociocognitive, contamination, or iatrogenic models of dissociative identity disorder.” Author contact: 1701 Gateway, Suite 349, Richardson, TX 75080. rossinst@rossinst.com
