To:  Fellow Survivors of Extreme Abuse and Their Advocates

From: Carol Rutz

An untold number of persons who survived extreme abuse including ritual abuse, cult abuse, sexual abuse, clergy abuse, mind control, torture, etc. and as a result developed posttraumatic conditions such as DID have been ignored too long and further injured by their inability to find quality mental health providers who recognize their symptoms and have the expertise to help them. If you have been unable to find a safe way to find and use your voice, now is your opportunity to do a completely anonymous survey that may affect a change in the way we are perceived by an uniformed public as well as by some skeptical mental health professionals.

I am pleased to be part of a research team from the United States and Germany that has developed a survey designed to explore commonalities reported by survivors from around the world regarding: 1. Types of abuse/violence/tortures to which they have been subjected.

2. Aftereffects of extreme abuse which they have experienced.

3. Methods of healing that have been most effective for them.

The survey, available in both English and German, is online at http://extreme-abuse-survey.net/.

If you are a survivor, I invite you to respond to the survey titled, “An International Survey of Adult Survivors of Extreme Abuse” and to make your survivor friends aware of this opportunity.  If you are a professional who works with trauma survivors, please tell them about the survey and suggest their participation.

The results of the survey will be widely disseminated on the World Wide Web, offered in press releases, and published in an edited academic book. A second survey will be available shortly for completion by therapists/counselors/clergy who work professionally with adult survivors of extreme abuse.

51st Session of the Committee on the Status of Women takes place Feb. 26 – March 9, 2007 at the United Nations. Theme of this international event is “”The Girl Child.”” Four to five thousand women from around the world are expected to attend. Under the sponsorship of anthropologist Dana Raphael, Ph.D. and The Human Lactation (Research) Center, LTD, Westport, CT., trauma therapists and adult survivors of ritual abuse and mind control will present a panel titled “When I Was A Girl.” The workshop, described below, is free and open to the public. It will be held on March 1, 2007 from 12 to 1:45 p.m. in the Church Center (1st Ave at 44th Street, NYC) on the 8th floor in the Grumman Room.

Also at the same conference : March 5, 2007 – 2:00 PM – 3:45 PM 322 Human Trafficking and Non-State Actor Torture of the Girl Child within the Context of Ritual Abuse-Torture Canadian Voice of Women for Peace Panel Church Center – Hardin Room (11th Fl.) “Participants will include a Canadian and an American woman sharing their testimonials of childhood survival; plus insights gathered by two Canadian activists and researchers into the transnational crime and human rights violation of child trafficking and non-state actor torture, involved in the co-culture of ritual abuse-torture. The question will be raised as to whether the violation of the girl child within this co-culture is a phenomenon situated within industrialized countries.” http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/conf/seforms/dspUNcalendar.asp

Quebec to give about 1,700 abused Duplessis Orphans a total of $26 million – 12/21/06 Peter Rakobowchuk – Montreal (CP) “Saying it’s time to turn the page, the Quebec government has set aside $26 million to compensate the last group of so-called Duplessis Orphans. Many of them were the children of unwed mothers who were physically and mentally abused in Roman Catholic Church-run institutions in the 1940s and ’50s….A group of about 1,100 other orphans settled with the government in 2001 for about $25 million for wrongfully placing them in mental institutions. That offer, based on a flat $10,000 to each individual plus $1,000 for each year they were wrongfully confined, worked out to about $25,000 per orphan. Frontline – “In recent decades, more than 10,000 children were reportedly sexually abused by Catholic priests in the United States. In “Hand of God,” film maker Joe Cultrera explores just one of those cases, that of his own brother Paul. Paul Cultrera was molested in the 1960s by Father Joseph Birmingham, who allegedly abused nearly 100 other children. “Hand of God” tells the story of faith betrayed, and how Paul and the rest of the Cultrera family fought back against a scandal that continues to afflict scores of churches across the country.” http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/handofgod/view/

Abuse Scandal Still Echoes Through Catholic Church by Rachel Martin  1/11/07 “Five years ago this month, The Boston Globe published a series of reports exposing widespread allegations of sex abuse by clergy in Boston and efforts by the Catholic Church hierarchy to cover it up. The scandal triggered a chain reaction. Thousands of victims of clergy sex abuse around the country went public and filed suit, creating a scandal that rocked American Catholicism and has cost the Catholic Church more than $1 billion.” http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6765175

from LMS Robinson abuse suit’s dismissal to be appealed – Ritual rape, torture alleged in civil action By Mark Reiter Blade Staff Writer 1/19/07 “A Lucas County Common Pleas Court ruling throwing out the civil lawsuit of a woman who accused Gerald Robinson of torturing and raping her in a satanic ritual when she was a child will be appealed, an attorney in the case said yesterday. Mark Davis, the attorney for the plaintiff who filed the suit anonymously with her husband as Survivor Doe and Spouse Doe, said the decision of Judge Ruth Ann Franks will be appealed to the Ohio 6th District Court of Appeals within the next 30 days.” http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?Date=20070119&Category=NEWS02&ArtNo=701190389&SectionCat=NEWS&Template=printart

Abuse lawsuit dismissed against priest convicted of killing nun 1/17/07 AP Toledo “A judge on Wednesday dismissed a civil lawsuit accusing a Roman Catholic priest — who was convicted last year of killing a nun — of taking part in ritual abuse ceremonies. Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Ruth Ann Franks granted a motion to dismiss the case filed on behalf of the Rev. Gerald Robinson, the Catholic Diocese of Toledo and others named in the suit, WNWO-TV reported on its Web site. Robinson’s attorney John Thebes told the station that the motion to dismiss was based on the lawsuit being filed decades after the abuse was alleged to have taken place, in violation of a statue of limitations that puts a deadline on when such suits must be filed. At the time the suit was filed in 2005, the statute of limitations was two years after an alleged victim turned 18. The Legislature has since extended the statute to 12 years after the victim turns 18. The woman was not identified in the lawsuit. She claimed in the suit that Robinson and other clergy members tortured and raped her as a young girl in a church basement. Robinson’s attorneys have denied the woman’s claims. Robinson, 68, was found guilty on May 11 of choking and stabbing Sister Margaret Ann Pahl in 1980. He was sentenced to a mandatory term of 15 years to life in prison.” http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?Category=13&ID=330722&subCategoryID=0

describes crimes from LMS Civil suit against Robinson dismissed – Ritual abuse alleged about 40 years ago By Meghan Gilbert and Mark Zaborney Blade Staff Writers 1/18/07 “The civil lawsuit filed against Gerald Robinson that accused him and others of repeatedly torturing and raping a young girl in ritual abuse ceremonies at a North Toledo church was dismissed yesterday. Judge Ruth Ann Franks of Lucas County Common Pleas Court granted the defendants’ motion to dismiss the suit and ordered the plaintiffs, listed as Survivor Doe and Spouse Doe, to pay court costs, according to court records. The defendants listed in the suit, which was filed in April, 2005, included Robinson, a Toledo priest who was convicted last year of murdering a Roman Catholic nun on April 5, 1980; Gerald Mazuchowski, a former lay minister; the Catholic Diocese of Toledo; St. Adalbert Parish; the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales Inc., and 15 “John Does.” The motion to dismiss the lawsuit was written by Tom Pletz, attorney for the diocese, and was based on an Ohio Supreme Court decision that said “these types of cases are just too old, essentially,” said John Thebes, who represented Robinson in the civil case…..The unidentified woman said she was the victim of bizarre demonizing ceremonies conducted by Robinson and other clergy nearly 40 years ago in the basement of St. Adalbert on Warsaw Street. The couple who filed the suit sought in excess of $25,000 in compensatory damages. The woman said she recognized Robinson following his arrest in April, 2004, for the murder of Sister Margaret Ann Pahl as being among the men whom Survivor Doe accused of molesting her from 1968 to 1975. The woman said the abuse included chanting of Satanic verses, cutting her with a knife as a sacrifice to Satan, drawing an upside-down cross on her abdomen, and forcing her to drink the blood of sacrificed animals, such as a rabbit. She said the men dressed in nun’s clothing and performed the rituals while she was on a table. They restrained her if she tried to leave, she said. In addition to being allegedly raped and molested, the woman contended she was forced to perform sexual acts on the men. She said the abuse took place in the church’s basement until 1972, when it was moved to an undisclosed wooded area. The lawsuit contended that Father Robinson and Mr. Mazuchowski “had a close relationship with Survivor Doe’s mother, who also participated in the ceremonies in the woods and was becoming high priestess of Satan.” Contact Meghan Gilbert at: mgilbert@theblade.com or 419-724-6050. http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?Date=20070118&Category=NEWS02&ArtNo=701180429&SectionCat=NEWS&Template=printart

Denying Ritual Abuse of Children – Catherine Gould – The Journal of Psychohistory 22 (3) 1995 “The evidence is rapidly accumulating that the problem of ritual abuse is considerable in scope and extremely grave in its consequences Among 2,709 members of the American Psychological Association who responded to a poll, 2,292 cases of ritual abuse were reported (Bottoms, Shaver, & Goodman, 1993). In 1992 alone, Childhelp USA logged 1,741 calls pertaining to ritual abuse, Monarch Resources of Los Angeles logged approximately 5,000, Real Active Survivors tallied near-ly 3,600, Justus Unlimited of Colorado received almost 7,000, and Looking Up of Maine handled around 6,000. Even allowing for some of these calls to have been made by people who assist survivors but arc not themselves survivors, and for some survivors to have called more that one helpline or made multiple calls to the same helpline, these numbers suggest that at a minimum there must be tens of thousands of survivors of ritual abuse in the United States. Evidence also continues to accumulate that the ritual abuse of children constitutes a child abuse problem of significant scope. In 1988, Finkelhor, Williams and Burns published the results of a nationwide study of substantiated reports of sexual abuse in day care involving 1,639 young child victims. Thirteen percent of these cases were found to involve ritual abuse. Other studies of ritually abused children have been relatively small. Kelly (1988; 1989; 1992a; 1992b; 1993) report-ed on 35 day care victims of ritual abuse, Waterman et al. (1993) reported on 82 children complaining of ritual abuse in preschool, Faller (1988; 1990) studied 18 children who had disclosed ritual abuse in their preschool, and Bybee and Mowbray (1993) from the Michigan State Department of Mental Health identified 62 children alleging ritual abuse in their preschool and 53 children who reported seeing others be ritually abused. Snow and Sorenson (1990) studied 39 children reporting ritual abuse in five neighborhoods in Utah, and Jonker and Jonker-Bakker (1991) reported on a total group of 98 children, at least 48 of whom were believed to be victims of ritual abuse. The latter case is the only one cited here which was conducted outside of the United States.” http://www.geocities.com/kidhistory/denyra.htm?200714

from LMS CIA thought Cameron’s techniques could be useful in the Cold War Compiled by Liz Ferguson, The Gazette 1/11/07 “Ewen Cameron, the man behind the brainwashing experiments, was a Scottish-born psychiatrist who worked at the Royal Victoria Hospital and McGill’s Allan Memorial Institute. From 1950 to 1965 he subjected hundreds of patients at the Allan Memorial to unorthodox treatment involving LSD, huge doses of electroshock, drug-induced comas and tapes that they sometimes listened to for weeks at time. One woman received the treatment through most of her pregnancy. Funding came from the Canadian government and the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency as part of a project called MK-ULTRA. In that Cold War era, the spy agency thought these techniques might be useful against the Soviet Union – perhaps LSD could be used as a truth serum, brainwashing drug or incapacitating agent, given to prisoners or foreign leaders like Cuba’s Fidel Castro.” http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=76d8f185-58cd-4f7a-9ef5-04c58a38bd97&k=22098

Woman wants to launch lawsuit over ‘brainwashing’ 1/7/07 Montreal “Janine Huard says she was a young mother of four with mild post-partum depression when she checked herself in for psychiatric treatment at a Montreal hospital more than five decades ago. Huard says what happened after that still haunts her today and she will be in a federal courtroom this week seeking to launch a class-action lawsuit against the Canadian government for Cold War-era brainwashing experiments carried out on her and hundreds of other patients. “I was a guinea pig,” Huard told The Canadian Press. On and off over more than a decade at McGill University’s renowned Allan Memorial Institute, Huard says she received massive electroshocks and was fed more than 40 experimental pills a day. Huard, who will be 79 at the end of the month, says she was drugged and subjected to so-called “depatterning,” during which repetitive recordings were played in her ear for weeks on end, one of them telling her she the memories of patients and rebuild their psyches without psychiatric defect. The idea intrigued was of no use to her family….The ordeal came at the hands of Dr. Ewen Cameron, an Edinburgh-educated, New York-based doctor who pioneered “psychic driving,” by which he believed he could erase the CIA, which recruited Cameron to experiment with mind control techniques beginning in 1950. The McGill experiments were jointly funded by the CIA and the Canadian government. As director of the institute until 1964, Cameron conducted a range of experiments, often without the knowledge or permission of patients. Cameron gave patients LSD and subjected them to massive and multiple electroshock treatments. Some underwent sleep deprivation or total sensory deprivation. Others were kept in drug-induced comas for months on end while speakers under their pillows broadcasts messages for up to 16 hours a day. The experiments were part of a larger CIA program called MK-ULTRA, which also saw LSD administered to U.S. prison inmates and patrons of brothels without their knowledge, according to testimony before a 1977 U.S. Senate committee. The CIA eventually settled a class-action lawsuit by test subjects, including Huard, and the Canadian government ordered a judicial report into Cameron’s experiments.” http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/print/CTVNews/20070107/brainwashing_lawsuit_070107/20070107/?hub=Canada&subhub=PrintStory

A federal court hearing is scheduled to begin Wednesday to decide whether to approve a class-action suit. In 1994, 77 of the mostly unwitting Canadian patients were awarded $100,000 each from the federal government, but only those who suffered “total depatterning,” meaning they were rendered to a childlike state. More than 250 others were denied compensation. In 2004, a federal appeal court overruled that decision and awarded a former patient the $100,000.” http://www.thestar.com/printArticle/168792

Calif. High Court Weighs Whether Trickery OK in Research – Mike McKee – The Recorder 12/11/06 “The California Supreme Court appeared to dance a fine line Tuesday in a defamation suit against two academics who allegedly tricked the former foster mother of a research subject into revealing secrets about her….Loftus and Guyer questioned Corwin’s conclusions and began digging into Taus’ past for contradictory information. They even hired a private investigator and eventually contacted Taus’ foster mother, allegedly with Loftus posing as Corwin’s supervisor. Taus went public about her identity in 2003 when she filed suit against Loftus and Guyer in Solano County Superior Court. She was upset that the professors hadn’t obtained her consent before proceeding with their research, and was angry that their report — while not naming her — contained allegations by her foster mother that Taus had been a troubled teenager who slept around and used drugs. Loftus and Guyer tried to have the case dismissed as a strategic lawsuit against public participation, but were rejected last year by the 1st District Court of Appeal. The appeal court said Taus had presented evidence that Loftus and Guyer “used deception and trickery to penetrate a zone of privacy surrounding Taus’ close family members in order to obtain private information … that would not have been disclosed in a truthful encounter.” http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1165501513364
