Study: More than half of parishes had priest accused of abuse October 11, 2010 More than half of Chicago’s Roman Catholic parishes have had a priest accused of sexually abusing a child working there at some point, according to a study released today that was quickly questioned by the Chicago Archdiocese. In some cases, multiple priests accused of misconduct worked at the same church, according to the study, conducted by reform groups Voice of the Faithful, African American Advocates for Victims of Clergy Sexual Abuse and the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. “In almost 60 percent of the parishes, an accused predator worked there,” said Barbara Blaine, president of SNAP. For example, from 1980 to 1990, 57.7% of Chicago parishes had an accused priest working there, said Bob Kopp, one of the study’s researchers and vice president of Chicagoland Voice of the Faithful. Other decades examined in the study had similar percentages of affected parishes, he said. She is calling for victims to speak up. “Silence protects predators.”….”From the description of what we have heard, it appears that the analysis and conclusions are questionable,” said Colleen Dolan of the archdiocese in an e-mailed statement. “The priests referred to in the … report have all been removed and are not in ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago.”

New twist in Belgian Catholic abuse legal row AFP, Oct 12, 2010 BRUSSELS: Belgium’s highest court ordered magistrates on Tuesday to re-examine evidence seized by police relating to decades of child abuse and alleged Roman Catholic Church cover-ups. The court overturned two previous decisions by lower courts that rendered inadmissible evidence taken from church headquarters, the home of a former archbishop and a church-backed commission investigating sex crimes perpetrated by priests. Responding to lawyers acting for alleged victims who lodged appeals, the judges said the lower courts were wrong not to hear civil parties and therefore magistrates should look again at the evidence in a new light. It means that truckloads of material gathered by police in spectacular raids in June that drew the ire of Pope Benedict XVI himself could potentially be used to relaunch state prosecutions for abuse.

Priest extradited from U.S. jailed for UK sex abuse Oct 22, 2010 LONDON (Reuters) – A former Roman Catholic priest was jailed for 21 years on Friday for sexual offences against boys, after being extradited to Britain from the United States. James Robinson, a former boxer and colliery blacksmith, was found guilty of 21 charges of sexual abuse between 1959 and 1983, including offences against two altar boys. Robinson, 73, used his status as a priest to gain “unfettered and unlimited” access to boys, giving them gifts and taking them on trips in his sports car, prosecutor John Atwood told the court in Birmingham, central England. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE69L37220101022

Former U.K. priest jailed for sexual abuse Oct. 22, 2010 LONDON (UPI) — Former Catholic priest James Robinson was sentenced Friday to 21 years in jail in Britain for decades of sexual abuse. Robinson, who was extradited from California to the United Kingdom last year, was found guilty on 21 counts of sexual abuse between 1959 and 1983, The Sun reported. Robinson, 73, fled to the United States from Britain in 1985, when he was first accused of pedophilia. Prosecutors said he was moved from parish to parish as a priest, showering gifts on his intended victims to get close to them. He was convicted of abusing six people, including two altar boys. Documents from the San Diego Settlement – On October 22, 2010, Judge William C. Pate ordered the release of documents relating to the sexual abuse of children by priests in the Diocese of San Diego. This document release was a nonmonetary provision of the San Diego settlement, as ordered on August 29, 2008 by Judge Emilie Elias, of the Los Angeles Superior Court. On this page, we present all the documents released by Judge Pate’s order, and during this week, we will post the crucial documents individually for easier download. Unsealed Calif. church docs show abuse allegations October 24, 2010 AP Online By GILLIAN FLACCUS  – SAN DIEGO – Attorneys for nearly 150 people who claim sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests made nearly 10,000 pages of previously sealed internal church documents public Sunday, revealing at least one previously unknown decades-old case in which a priest under police investigation was allowed to leave the U.S. after the Diocese of San Diego intervened. After a three-year legal battle over the Diocese of San Diego’s internal records, a retired San Diego Superior Court judge ruled late Friday that they could be made public. The records are from the personnel files of 48 priests who were either credibly accused or convicted of sexual abuse or were named in a civil lawsuit. The 144 plaintiffs settled with the diocese in 2007 for nearly $200 million, but the agreement stipulated that an independent judge would review the priests’ sealed personnel records and determine what could be made public.
The files show what the diocese knew about abusive priests, starting decades before any allegations became public, and that some church leaders shuffled priests from parish to parish or overseas despite credible complaints against them.  “We encourage all Catholics, all members of the community, to look for these documents,” attorney Anthony DeMarco said at a news conference. “These documents demonstrate years and years and decades of concerted action that has allowed this community’s children to be victimized, and it is not until the community looks at these documents that this cycle is ever going to be ended.” http://newsystocks.com/news/3763283

Man Arrested After Suing the Vatican By TIM HULL  November 01, 2010   SAN FRANCISCO (CN) – A man charged with assaulting a priest at a Jesuit retirement home has sued the Vatican, claiming it knew its priest had sexually molested him and others, and failed to protect him from being “raped, tortured, and forced to engage in sexual acts with his own brother,” when they were children. William Lynch, 43, was arrested on Friday, 2 days after he sued the Vatican, the Oakland Archdiocese, the Jesuit Order, The Christian Family Movement and others in Federal Court. Lynch was accused of assaulting the Rev. Jerold Lindner, 65, in the lobby of a retirement home in Los Gatos, in May this year.
Lynch claims Lindner oversaw his rape, torture and abuse at a summer camp when he was 7, and that the religious defendants knew of Lindner’s propensities, and covered for him for decades. “In May 1975, plaintiff was entrusted to a CFM [Christian Family Movement] children’s camp in Portola State Park in the state of California, whereat he was raped, tortured, and forced to engage in sexual acts with is own brother by Jesuit priest and CFM Camp Spiritual Advisor Jerold W. Lindner. Plaintiff was 7 years old at that time,” according to the complaint.
“Not only did the Jesuit Order know of Lindner’s propensities for child rape and abuse, Lindner was well known by his order as a ‘torturer of children.’ He was specifically known for sexual gratification while torturing his victims among his order, and his reputation and knowledge of his crimes extended all the way to the Holy See in the 1970s [and] 1980s.”….Lynch says in his complaint that the Vatican and the other defendants continue to protect the retired priest after “decades of abuse and hundreds of victims.”  ….The Associated Press reported on Friday, however, that “Father Lindner, 65, has been accused of abuse by nearly a dozen people, including his sister and nieces and nephews. … He has previously denied abusing the Lynch boys and has not been criminally charged. The abuse falls outside the statute of limitations.”
The AP report continued: “Father Lindner was removed from the ministry and placed at the Los Gatos retirement home in 2001. “He was named in two additional lawsuits for abuse between 1973 and 1985, according to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The cases were included in a $660 million settlement struck between the church and more than 550 plaintiffs in 2007.”….”Lindner’s sexual abuse of children began in [the] 1950s, continued through the 1970s and persisted into the 1980s, when Lindner was actually promoted by defendants to a teacher post at an all boys school, Loyola High School in Los Angeles,” according to the complaint. http://www.courthousenews.com/2010/11/01/31496.htm

Paedophile ring in Cornwall ‘abused at least 30 girls’ 26 November 2010 A third man involved in a paedophile ring which police say abused dozens of girls has been convicted of sex crimes. James Machin was found guilty at Truro Crown Court of 10 sex offences relating to girls under 13. Two others were convicted of sex abuse charges in 2008.  Police described the abuse by the men in the Camborne area, found in a three-year investigation, as “horrific”. One victim was five years old. Inquiries began in December 2007 after a victim’s parent raised concerns.

John Barrett, 49, from the Camborne area, abused two girls, who were aged five and seven when the crimes first started, and passed them on to John Wrey to do the same. Barrett was jailed for 14 years and 6 months in 2008 for 16 sexual offences.
Wrey, 55, from Hayle, who was arrested at the same time as Barrett, is serving a five-and-a-year sentence for his part in the abuse after he was also convicted in 2008. On Friday a jury decided, after two days of deliberations, that Machin was also guilty of similar sex offences against the girls which Barrett had passed on to him. NAMBLA Pedophiles Find Facebook Friends By James R. Marsh on October 4, 2010  According to FOXNews.com  The world’s largest pro-pedophilia advocacy group uses Facebook to connect with its members throughout the world; to find and exchange photos of children; to hone its members’ predatory behavior; and to identify, target and reel in child victims. Facebook says it has a strict policy against the posting of content that supports groups engaged in child exploitation, yet a simple, five-second search on Facebook, conducted on Sept. 23, yielded dozens of pages devoted to the infamous North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA). Many of those pages featured numerous photos of unnamed boys, some of whom appeared to be too young for kindergarten. The same day, FoxNews.com found hundreds of links to NAMBLA’s website on Facebook, which has more than half a billion users worldwide. EXCLUSIVE: Facebook’s Filters Fall Short in Blocking Pedophiles By Jana Winter October 21, 2010 Facebook is failing to prevent child predators from posting suggestive and potentially illegal photographs of children on its website, a weeks-long investigation by FoxNews.com reveals, despite its claim that it’s doing all it can to keep pedophile materials from being displayed. The world’s largest social network employs content filters that automatically scan for basic keywords that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) identifies as being commonly associated with child exploitive material. Those filters, if they are properly employed, should flag much of the offensive material found on the site, cybersecurity experts say. But in a lengthy telephone interview on Oct. 6, FoxNews.com took two Facebook executives on a click-by-click tour of their own website, bringing them face-to-face with some of its vile contents and forcing them to admit that their efforts to block child predators were not working. During a 90-minute phone interview with Facebook spokesman Simon Axten and the company’s chief security officer, Joe Sullivan, the two executives were guided by FoxNews.com through the site’s seamy subculture B an encounter that left Sullivan sounding dumbfounded, unaware of and unable to explain the extremely graphic content on the site….
But despite their efforts, FoxNews.com found an entire underworld of widely recognized terms, code words and abbreviations on Facebook — hundreds of pages with PTHC and Incest in their titles, and many others that are unprintable. Both terms are on the NCMEC keywords list, sources said, and they were found on Facebook’s public, private, group and profile pages. Amazon Yanks Pedophilia E-Book Amid Boycott Talk  11/11/10 Amazon.com appears to have severed sales of an e-book that condones pedophilia, after news of the self-published “child-lover’s” guide went viral on the Internet and sparked cries for a boycott of the online bookseller. The book, “The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure: A Child-Lover’s Code of Conduct,” still appears on the Amazon site, but its link yields an error message. All 3,011 customer reviews are also inaccessible, but a discussion page about the book is still visible. It is rated by Amazon users as having one out of five stars. I am extremely joyous for the Victory pertaining to the removal of this nasty book,” wrote one user. There’s been no official word from Amazon that it has dropped the book. As of this morning, the book was inaccessible on the site, but users in Amazon’s discussion forum  said it was available intermittently throughout the night. Amazon Backing Down? ‘Pedophile Guide’ Listing Unavailable After Outrage November 11, 2010 An e-book for sale on Amazon.com entitled “The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure,” was no longer available from the retailer late Wednesday after shocked consumers across the nation called for a boycott….The listing and description of the item was no longer available early Thursday. It was unclear if the item was intentionally pulled. “This is my attempt to make pedophile situations safer for those juveniles that find themselves involved in them, by establishing certian [sic] rules for these adults to follow,” a product description read. “I hope to achieve this by appealing to the better nature of pedosexuals, with hope that their doing so will result in less hatred and perhaps liter sentences should they ever be caught.” The content led to hundreds of tweets criticizing Amazon for allowing the title to be sold and a Facebook page was created calling for a boycott of the Seattle-based company. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/11/11/amazon-pulls-pedophile-guide-amid-outrage/

Amazon defends ‘Pedophile’s Guide’ Another book protested in 2002 for advocating adult-child sex is still available on the site By Helen A.S. Popkin 11/10/2010 NEW YORK C Amazon is selling a self-published book defending pedophiles, sparking discussions about the retailer’s obligation to vet items before they are sold in its online stores, and threats of boycott from Amazon customers if the book is not removed. The book, ” The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover’s Code of Conduct” by Philip R. Greaves II, offers advice to pedophiles afraid of becoming the center of retaliation. It is an electronic book available for Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle e-reader. The author’s description (misspellings included) reads:
“This is my attempt to make pedophile situations safer for those juveniles that find themselves involved in them, by establishing certian rules for these adults to follow. I hope to achieve this by appealing to the better nature of pedosexuals, with hope that their doing so will result in less hatred and perhaps liter sentences should they ever be caught.”
Amazon issued a statement that will no doubt fuel the outraged comments multiplying on the “Pedophile’s Guide” Amazon page. “Amazon believes it is censorship not to sell certain books simply because we or others believe their message is objectionable,” it reads. “Amazon does not support or promote hatred or criminal acts, however, we do support the right of every individual to make their own purchasing decisions.”….A customer review on the “Pedophile’s Guide” Amazon page written by “Outraged Mother” reads, “The line of immorality is at best a zone with ill defined boundaries. Whatever. This crosses into the unsavory and shameful side of the zone. Take it down.”
“There is a point when, even though a company has a no-censorship policy, that selling certain books is simply wrong,” reads “Disgusting Abomination,” another customer review. “Not censoring is one thing, and I commend that, but choosing to sell this book on a site that accessed by millions of people (including children) daily is reprehensible. This is a disgusting choice you have made, Amazon. Whatever money you are making off this book can’t be worth the ire you are receiving for selling it.”….In 2002, Amazon.com cited the First Amendment as justification for offering another book that advocates adult-child sex, “Understanding Loved Boys and Boylovers,” by David L. ‘Pedophile’s Guide’ Sparks Angry Criticism of Amazon Nov. 10, 2010 – The trend on Twitter today was anger. A group of Twitterati is upset at Amazon.com for selling a Kindle edition of a book called “The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure.” With all of Twitter’s 190-million-plus users as an audience, they let their feelings be known — in 140 characters or less. “Dear Amazon,” said one microblogger, using a function that directs the message toward Amazon’s own Twitter account, “Free speech doesn’t include a written manual on how to exploit, molest and rape our children.”  Amazon did not respond to a message from AOL News seeking comment. But in a statement to AOL’s Tech Crunch, the retail giant said: ” Amazon believes it is censorship not to sell certain books simply because we or others believe their message is objectionable. Amazon does not support or promote hatred or criminal acts, however, we do support the right of every individual to make their own purchasing decisions.” Twitter declined to comment in a message to AOL News. The book’s poorly spelled page on the Amazon website says it aims to make “pedophile situations safer for those juveniles that find themselves involved in them, by establishing certian (sic) rules for these adults to follow.” The Web page lists the publication date as Oct. 28, 2010, and the author as Phillip R. Greaves. No Longer a Pedophile’s Haven – A crackdown in Cambodia is catching Western men, but locals still mostly unhindered by Brendan Brady November 16, 2010 ….Following pressure from local activists as well as the United States, Australia, and some European countries, Cambodia launched a campaign in 2003 to fight its reputation as a pedophile’s carefree playground. By most accounts, the effort has achieved results. Now, articles about arrests of North American and European nationals pepper the pages of the local press. The crackdown and accompanying PR campaign helped lift Cambodia from the gutter of the U.S. human-trafficking watchlist, making the donor-dependent country eligible for a greater variety of direct aid. :For Western pedophiles, Cambodia is no longer a safe haven,” says Samleang Seila, the head of the local child-protection group Action Pour Les Enfants (APLE). The change is evidenced by a rising number of arrests for “debauchery” and “indecent acts,” which grew from just eight in 2003 to 36 last year, according to APLE. The organization tracks sex tourists, gathers evidence against them and hands their cases over to local police. That’s when things can easily unravel: inexperienced and under-resourced, Cambodia’s police and judiciary are prone to corruption and poor implementation of the law. FBI: 69 children, 99 pimps found in national bust – ALICIA A. CALDWELL Associated Press  November 8, 2010 More than five dozen child prostitutes have been found in the last three days as part of a nationwide crackdown on the sexual exploitation of children, the FBI said Monday. FBI spokesman Jason Pack said 69 children were removed from prostitution and 99 suspected pimps were arrested in 40 cities across 30 states and the District of Columbia. Authorities arrested 785 other adults on a variety state and local charges, Pack said. All the children found in the last three days have been placed into protective custody or returned to their families. The children were found during Operation Cross Country V, a three-day roundup targeting child traffickers and pimps. The largest group of child prostitutes, 24, was found in and around Seattle, according to the FBI. Indictment: Somali gangs trafficked girls for sex November 8, 2010 By AMY FORLITI Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Twenty-nine people have been indicted in a sex trafficking ring in which Somali gangs in Minneapolis and St. Paul allegedly forced girls under age 14 into prostitution in Minnesota, Tennessee and Ohio, according to an indictment unsealed Monday. The 24-count indictment, unsealed in U.S. District Court in the Middle District of Tennessee, said one of the gangs’ goals was recruiting females under age 18, including some under age 14, and forcing them into prostitution so the defendants could get money, marijuana or liquor. The indictment details several instances in which young Somali or African American girls were taken from place to place and forced to engage in sex acts with multiple people. In fact, advocates and authorities say it has grown more insidious in recent years. Street corners and alleys have been largely replaced by smartphones and websites, making it easier for solicitations and payments to take place out of police view. “It’s a modern form of slavery,”  said Susan Goldfarb, executive director of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Suffolk County, a program run in partnership with the district attorney’s office. At least once a week, the center receives a referral about a local child being used sexually to make someone else money. “This is a huge industry,” Goldfarb said….Nationwide, there are at least 100,000 children being exploited for paid sex, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. “A lot of Americans don’t think it is a problem here,” said John Shehan, executive director of the exploited child division of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. “It is happening in mainstream America. Spain ‘busts child pornography network’ 8 October 2010 – Police have arrested 57 people over child pornography allegations in Spain, including business owners and local police officers, the authorities say. Those detained in recent days include a gardener who had filmed relatives aged seven and 14 in sexual poses. Another 47 people have been placed under investigation as part of the same inquiry. UN envoy says over 15,000 raped in eastern Congo By Edith M. Lederer, AP Writer – Oct 15, 2010 UNITED NATIONS – More than 15,000 people were raped in the volatile eastern region of Congo last year, according to the best data available, the top U.N. envoy in the African nation said Friday. Roger Meece, who heads the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Congo, said the scale of the security problems in the east, including sexual attacks, is “enormous.” Meece told the U.N. Survey: Men, Women, and Ritual Abuse – In July, 2003, Survivorship conducted a survey of its members to compare brothers and sisters of survivors across various parameters. The results, which were published in Volume 12 Number 1 of the Survivorship Journal, and the questionnaire are reproduced below….25 people, all survivors, returned questionnaires. Five were men. These people had 23 brothers and 27 sisters, for a total of 27 men and 48 women (75 in all)….Survivors ranged in age from 23 to 66, with the average being 42. Brothers ranged from 9 to 64, average 33, and sisters from 12 to 69, average 44. Men were more likely to be married. 78% of them were married (average. 2.0 kids) while 50% of the survivors were married (average 1.2 kids), and 46% of the sisters were married (average 1.6 kids). The educational level was quite high. Survivors ranged from 7 to 22 years of schooling, with an average of 15.9 years; brothers, 7 to 18 years, average 15.3 years; and sisters 11 to 22, average 15.4. However, all but one of the men (and the two kids) were self-supporting, whereas only 58% of the survivors and 67% of the sisters were. Survivors were equally likely to be in touch with brothers (41%) and sisters (44%). Of the survivors, only 48% were in touch with their parents versus 89% of the brothers and 89% of the sisters were in touch with their parents. Everybody was described as abused, except for two sisters (9%). 83% of the survivors said they remembered the abuse, but they thought that only 15% of the brothers and 23% of the sisters did. 75% of the survivors said they were DID and 25% DDNOS, while 54% of the brothers were described as DID and 46% DDNOS, and only one sister was described as DID and six as DDNOS. Over all, 85% of the brothers, 75% of the sisters, and 61% of the survivors were considered as being in good health. 33% of the brothers, 14% of the sisters, and 16% of the survivors were seen as alcoholic and 20% of the brothers, 14% of the sisters, and 4% of the survivors as drug addicted. Only one person was imprisoned, a female survivor. Eating disorders were surprisingly high among all three groups: 68% for survivors, 56% for men, and 67% for sisters. A study comparing eating disorder rates among both male and female RA survivors, incest survivors, and controls would be very interesting. One female survivor reported that she might still be involved. Of the brothers, 77% were thought to be still involved, and of the sisters, 54%.

Survivorship 1993 Survey: Geographical Location of Abuse – In July 1993, Survivorship conducted a survey of its members. They were asked their diagnosis, the names of the cult/sects/which abused them, and the location of their abuse. They were also asked if they had moved to escape the abuse and, if so, whether they encountered cult activity in their new location. 506 questionnaires were returned and 919 locations were reported….We have tabulated all locations in which survey responders reported abuse; the results are summarized below. Nazis Were Given Safe Haven in U.S., Report Says By ERIC LICHTBLAU Published: November 13, 2010 WASHINGTON – A secret history of the United States government’s Nazi-hunting operation concludes that American intelligence officials created a ”safe haven” in the United States for Nazis and their collaborators after World War II, and it details decades of clashes, often hidden, with other nations over war criminals here and abroad. The 600-page report, which the Justice Department has tried to keep secret for four years, provides new evidence about more than two dozen of the most notorious Nazi cases of the last three decades.  It describes the government’s posthumous pursuit of Dr. Josef Mengele, the so-called Angel of Death at Auschwitz, part of whose scalp was kept in a Justice Department official’s drawer; the vigilante killing of a former Waffen SS soldier in New Jersey; and the government’s mistaken identification of the Treblinka concentration camp guard known as Ivan the Terrible….
The full report disclosed that the Justice Department found “a smoking gun” in 1997 establishing with “definitive proof” that Switzerland had bought gold from the Nazis that had been taken from Jewish victims of the Holocaust. But these references are deleted, as are disputes between the Justice and State Departments over Switzerland’s culpability in the months leading up to a major report on the issue. Another section describes as “a hideous failure” a series of meetings in 2000 that United States officials held with Latvian officials to pressure them to pursue suspected Nazis. That passage is also deleted. So too are references to macabre but little-known bits of history, including how a director of the O.S.I. kept a piece of scalp that was thought to belong to Dr. Mengele in his desk in hopes that it would help establish whether he was dead. The chapter on Dr. Mengele, one of the most notorious Nazis to escape prosecution, details the O.S.I.’s elaborate efforts in the mid-1980s to determine whether he had fled to the United States and might still be alive. In 1980, prosecutors filed a motion that “misstated the facts” in asserting that checks of CIA and FBI records revealed no information on the Nazi past of Tscherim Soobzokov, a former Waffen SS soldier. CIA Must Disclose Data on Human Experiments By ANNIE YOUDERIAN  11/17/10 (CN) – A federal magistrate judge in San Francisco ordered the CIA to produce specific records and testimony about the human experiments the government allegedly conducted on thousands of soldiers from 1950 through 1975. Three veterans groups and six individual veterans sued the CIA and other government agencies, claiming they used about 7,800 soldiers as human guinea pigs to research biological, chemical and psychological weapons. The experiments, many of which took place at Edgewood Arsenal and Fort Detrick in Maryland, allegedly exposed test subjects to chemicals, drugs and electronic implants. Though the soldiers volunteered, they never gave informed consent, because the government didn’t fully disclose the risks, the veterans claimed. They were also required to sign an oath of secrecy, according to the complaint. The veterans filed three sets of document requests to find out who was tested, what substances they were given, and how it affected them. Between October and April, the government produced about 15,000 pages of heavily redacted records, most of which related to the named plaintiffs only. The CIA argued that much of the information requested was protected under the Privacy Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. U.S. Magistrate Judge James Larson acknowledged that some of the requests were too broad and ordered the veterans to be more specific and to reduce the total number of requests. For example, Larson said the plaintiffs’ definition of “test program” is “overbroad,” as it not only named experimental programs like “Bluebird,” “Artichoke” and “MKUltra,” but also included “any other program of experimentation involving human testing of any substance, including but not limited to ‘MATERIAL TESTING PROGRAM EA 1729.'”
He ordered the veterans to provide a list of specific test programs and test substances. But once the plaintiffs narrow their requests, Larson said, they are entitled to most of the information. Each government agency must respond individually to each request, he said, and if an agency denies any request, it must explain — in sufficient detail — why the records are purportedly privileged….Larson….then addressed which topics are fair game for deposition, saying the government must produce witnesses to testify about the following: communication between the VA and test subjects on their health care claims; a 1963 CIA Inspector General report on an experiment called MKUltra, and the basis for each redaction on that report; the scope and conduct of document searches; the doses and effects of substances administered to test subjects; any contract or research proposals concerning the experiments; a confidential Army memo about the use of volunteers in research; all government-led human experiments from 1975 to date, but only those that involve specific drugs; and whether the government secretly administered MKUltra materials to “the patrons of prostitutes” in safe houses in New York and San Francisco, as the veterans claimed. CIA brain experiments pursued in veterans’ suit By Jeff Stein  11/24/2010 The CIA is notorious for its Cold War-era experiments with LSD and other chemicals on unwitting citizens and soldiers. Details have emerged in books and articles beginning more than 30 years ago. But if military veterans have their way in a California law suit, the spy agency’s quest to turn humans into robot-like assassins via electrodes planted in their brains will get far more exposure than the drugs the CIA tested on subjects ranging from soldiers to unwitting bar patrons and the clients of prostitutes….In 1961, a top CIA scientist reported in an internal memo that “the feasibility of remote control of activities in several species of animals has been demonstrated…
Special investigations and evaluations will be conducted toward the application of selected elements of these techniques to man,” according to The CIA and the Search for the Manchurian Candidate, a 1979 book by former State Department intelligence officer John Marks. “[T]his cold-blooded project,” Marks wrote, was designed…for the delivery of chemical and biological agents or for “executive action-type operations,” according to a document. Executive action was the CIA’s euphemism for assassination. The CIA pursued such experiments because it was convinced the Soviets were doing the same.
Victims have sought justice for years, in vain. Now, almost 40 years later, a federal magistrate has ordered the CIA to produce records and witnesses about the LSD and other experiments “allegedly conducted on thousands of soldiers from 1950 through 1975,” according to news accounts. U.S. Magistrate Judge John Larsen’s Nov. 17 order exempted the agency from having to testify about electrode tests on humans, but Gordon P. Erspamer, lead attorney for the veterans, says “we are pursuing this as well.”
“There is no question that these experiments were done,” Erspamer said by e-mail Tuesday, “but defendants say that they used private researchers and test subjects drawn from prisons, hospitals and nursing homes as subjects, not active duty military [personnel]. CIA said it had no one knowledgeable on this topic.” Erspamer, senior counsel in the San Francisco office of Morrison & Foerster, said “several” CIA witnesses are…still alive, naming some that have been publicly identified, but opting to keep secret others before he calls them. More than one third of women abused or forced into sex: UN (AFP) – Oct 12, 2010 UNITED NATIONS – More than a third of all women in the world have been forced into sex, beaten or abused by a partner or family member, a top UN official said Tuesday. Zou Xiaoqaio, vice-chairwoman of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women said that sexual violence was increasing around the world despite major campaigns by the UN and other bodies….”At least one every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or abused in some other way, usually by an intimate partner or family member,” Zou told a press conference at the UN headquarters, quoting a new report by the UN Population Fund. “Women continue to be raped and subject to other forms of sexual violence with impunity all over the world,” she said, highlighting how, in some countries, rape charges against an offender can be dropped if he marries the victim. “Women and girls are still being sold for sex around the world. Childhood Sexual Abuse May Raise Risk for Psychosis November 02, 2010 Childhood sexual abuse involving penetration appears to increase the risk of developing psychotic disorders later in life, according to research published in the November issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry. TUESDAY, Nov. 2 (HealthDay News) — Childhood sexual abuse involving penetration appears to increase the risk of developing psychotic disorders later in life, according to research published in the November issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.
Margaret C. Cutajar, of Monash University in Clifton Hill, Australia, and colleagues studied mental health data on 2,759 subjects who had been sexually abused as children, matched with community-based controls, to explore whether childhood sexual abuse raises the risk for subsequent psychotic disorders.
The researchers found rates for general psychosis, and particularly for schizophrenic disorders, significantly higher in the childhood sexual abuse subjects than in the controls (2.8 versus 1.4 percent for general psychosis and 1.9 versus 0.7 percent for schizophrenic disorders in abuse subjects and controls, respectively). Risk for later psychosis was highest in those whose abuse occurred after age 12, involved penetration, and involved more than one perpetrator. Setting – Sample drawn from all notified cases of child sexual abuse over a 30-year period in Victoria, Australia. Participants – A cohort of 2759 individuals ascertained as having been sexually abused when younger than 16 years had their subsequent contacts with mental health services established by data linkage. They were compared with a community-based control group matched on sex and age groupings whose rates of disorder were established using identical methods. Main Outcome Measures – Rates of psychotic and schizophrenic illnesses.
Results – Rates were significantly higher among child sexual abuse subjects compared with controls for psychosis in general (2.8% vs 1.4%; odds ratio, 2.1; 95% confidence interval, 1.4-3.1; P < .001) and schizophrenic disorders in particular (1.9% vs 0.7%; odds ratio, 2.6; 95% confidence interval, 1.6-4.4; P < .001). Those exposed to penetrative abuse had even higher rates of psychosis (3.4%) and schizophrenia (2.4%). Abuse without penetration was not associated with significant increases in psychosis or schizophrenia. The risks were highest for those whose abuse involved penetration, occurred after age 12 years, and involved more than 1 perpetrator, the combination producing rates of 8.6% for schizophrenia and 17.2% for psychosis.
Conclusions – Child sexual abuse involving penetration is a risk factor for developing psychotic and schizophrenic syndromes. The risk is greater for adolescents subjected to penetration. CNN’s Anderson Cooper revealed the result at the conclusion of the fourth annual “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute.” “Human trafficking is a crime, a heinous crime, a shame to humanity,” Koirala said earlier in the evening after being introduced as one of the top 10 CNN Heroes of 2010. “I ask everyone to join me to create a society free of trafficking.
