300 victims of child homes horror to tell their story as abuse inquiry finally opens   BY JOANNE SWEENEY – 13 January 2014
A £19m Government investigation on the abuse of children over a 73-year period in Northern Ireland residential institutions is under way.
More than 300 men and women will give evidence to the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry (HIA) on the physical and sexual abuse and neglect they suffered from those who should have cared for them. The witnesses, now middle-aged and older, will tell their harrowing stories at the inquiry, which will be held in Banbridge Courthouse, Co Down.
At the end of the 18 months of evidence, involving at least 14 individual institutions, the inquiry will determine whether there were “systemic failings” in preventing such abuse.
The inquiry will investigate historical institutional abuse – if there were systemic failings by institutions or the State “in the duties towards those children in their care between years of 1922-1995”. Abuse will include physical, emotional and sexual abuse, as well as neglect.
Coming from all over Northern Ireland, the Republic, Britain and Australia, the witnesses – many of whom will only be identified by a code to protect their anonymity – may finally get recognition of the wrong that was done to them after the inquiry reports to the Executive early in 2016.
All the witnesses spent time in residential care of the various institutions.

Nuns ‘battered boys stupid’ in Derry children’s home, victim tells child abuse inquiry
Man now aged 55 says he was caned on the feet by Sisters and sexually abused by older boys

Nuns used to batter boys stupid during daily abuse at a children’s home in Londonderry, one victim has claimed.    John Heaney, 55, was caned on the feet by members of the order of the Sisters of Nazareth at St Joseph’s in Termonbacca and said he suffered sexual abuse from older boys.
“Nuns were very good at raising their hands. All the Termonbacca boys have a flat spot on the back of their heads because they were battered stupid,” he said.
Termonbacca will be one of the first residential homes examined, with evidence from witnesses due to begin in coming weeks. Mr Heaney made his comments as he prepared to attend Sir Anthony’s hearings….

The largest ever inquiry into the abuse of children at residential homes in the UK will examine the soul of society, a lawyer has said. Decades of physical, sexual and emotional suffering were inflicted upon the most vulnerable by the church, the state and voluntary organisations, it was alleged today. More than 300 victims are set to testify to the investigation, which is expected to last 18 months….

Northern Ireland child abuse inquiry to hear victims of Derry nuns  Former residents of homes run by Sisters of Nazareth to give evidence at historical institutional abuse inquiry on Monday     Henry McDonald Ireland correspondent      theguardian.com, Monday 27 January 2014  The UK’s biggest ever child abuse inquiry will hear evidence on Monday from victims who were abused in two Derry homes run by Catholic nuns.
Based in Banbridge courthouse in Northern Ireland, the historical institutional abuse inquiry will focus on the maltreatment of children in Nazareth children’s home and Termonbacca, both run by the Sisters of Nazareth.
The order of nuns has already issued an apology to victims at the tribunal….
The Derry-based homes are among 13 separate institutions where children were physically and sexually abused. The inquiry will hear from 434 people and will last until June 2015.
A representatives of Northern Ireland’s Health and Social Care Board also said that if the state had failed in any way it was sorry.
Among the state-run institutions under examination was the former boys’ home at Kincora in east Belfast where senior staff including a prominent Orangeman ran a regime of sexual abuse and rape during the 1960s and 70s.
A number of those who ran the home or were implicated in the abuse were also loyalists working as state agents….

Child abuse inquiry: Priest told boy he was ‘product of evil and satanic relationship’ 29 January 2014  A priest told a former resident of a church-run children’s home in Northern Ireland that he was the product of an evil and satanic relationship, an inquiry has heard.
The son of an unmarried mother said he became a zombie, introverted and fearing the next beating, lying soaked in urine at night in an attempt to dissuade any sexual abusers from “dropping the hand”. He was a resident at St Joseph’s in Termonbacca, Londonderry, run by the Sisters of Nazareth order of nuns, in the 1950s and complained about his treatment to a priest after leaving the home. The response was: “You must never speak about this, you must understand… you and the other orphans are bastards. You are the product of an evil and satanic relationship. You never had a chance.”….
“I have waited 65 years to say this. When I was reared by the Sisters of the Congregation of Nazareth it was equivalent to being reared by the Taliban, such was their sadism, their lack of empathy, their fundamentalism, their lack of dignity to the little helpless boy.”
He ran away and was recovered time after time. One nun smirked and said: “Welcome back, your majesty,” the witness said. “Then the beatings would start.”….

Ireland and Child Abuse  By THE EDITORIAL BOARD JAN. 31, 2014 For years, the government of Ireland has denied liability for child sexual abuse by teachers in state-financed schools managed by the Roman Catholic Church. The European Court of Human Rights punctured this denial Tuesday with a finding that the Irish government, in financing and regulating the education of youngsters, had “an inherent obligation” to protect them, and owed compensation to a victim whose case was rejected as groundless by Ireland’s highest court.
The European court pointed to the obvious: The Irish government is responsible for failing to act against inhuman and degrading treatment of citizens that is specifically barred under Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The court ordered more than $150,000 in compensation and court costs for Louise O’Keeffe, who had been repeatedly abused 40 years ago as a 9-year-old at the national school at Dunderrow, County Cork.
The abuser was a lay teacher, Leo Hickey, who was not charged for 20 years, even though parents had complained about him to a school administrator in the early 1970s. The scandal finally broke into the open in the 1990s and the abuser was sentenced to three years in prison after being charged with 386 criminal offenses involving 21 youngsters….

Vatican tells UN hearing ‘no excuse’ for child abuse
Vatican has acknowledged there can be “no excuse” for child abuse, confronted for the first time at length and in public over the global priest sex abuse scandal

Victims of clerical abuse accused the Vatican of obfuscating and using “disingenous” arguments as representatives on Thursday came in for unprecedented public questioning by the United Nations over the Catholic Church’s cover-up of the rape of thousands of children by sexually abusive priests.
In testimony to a UN committee in Geneva, Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, the Vatican’s representative, showed a degree of remorse over church sex abuse scandals, saying that “such crimes can never be justified”.
But he reiterated an argument that the Vatican has long used — that the Holy See cannot be held responsible for the actions of clergy members in countries around the world because its remit extends only to those living and working within the Vatican City State, a tiny sovereign territory where less than 40 children reside.
Priests were “not functionaries of the Vatican but citizens of their countries and fall under the jurisdiction of their own countries”, he said.
The argument was dismissed by campaigners, who said it was clear that the Vatican is the hub of the world-wide Catholic Church and issues orders to dioceses around the globe….
The Vatican has been condemned for moving abusive clergy from one diocese or parish to another, destroying or withholding evidence and failing to report suspected abuse to the police. “The new Pope seems to be making encouraging gestures in a lot of areas, but he’s doing nothing to even begin to expose — much less reverse —decades of selfish church cover-ups that endanger kids and protect predators. It’s very disappointing. Mexican Catholic order Legion of Christ apologises to victims  6 February 2014

The Legion of Christ Catholic order has for the first time apologised to the victims of sexual abuse carried out by its founder, Father Marcial Maciel. In a statement, the order condemned the “reprehensible and objectively immoral behaviour” of the Mexico-born priest. Father Maciel led the order from its foundation in 1941 until 2006, when Pope Benedict ordered him to retire. He abused seminarians as young as 12, and died in 2008 aged 87 without ever being convicted of his crimes. A Vatican investigation also found out that he had fathered several children by at least two women, and used drugs. “We want to express our deep sorrow for the abuse of minor seminarians, the immoral acts with men and women who were adults, the arbitrary use of his authority and of material goods,” said the Legion of Christ in a statement….
Father Maciel was disciplined by the Vatican in 2006. Pope Benedict ordered him to stop exercising his ministry in public and to retire to a life of prayer and penitence.

(CNN) — Finally. Finally. Finally, a strong important voice in the world, the United Nations, speaks out on behalf of the rights of children and condemns the Vatican and the bishops for crimes of violence, rape and sexual abuse against children by transferring pedophile priests from parish to parish, withholding documents for prosecution and perpetuating an institutional culture of secrecy and shame….
As a survivor of rape and violence at the hands of a priest when I was a young girl, I understand that secrecy….
It has taken me more than half a lifetime to piece myself back together. I was 52 years old and still captivated by the Catholic Church when I let the buried “secret” memories emerge. His name was Father Rucker — George Neville Rucker. I must have trusted him when he asked me to crawl up on his lap as he sat watching a movie in an auditorium so long ago. He raped me while my mother was in the lunchroom nearby….
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles released 12,000 pages of files on scores of priests accused of sexually abusing children in 2013. I found out that the pastor of our parish back in 1947 suspected Father Rucker of “touching” little girls. It was the bishop who would not listen and passed Father Rucker on and on until 2002, when he was defrocked. He had become a real liability to Cardinal Roger Mahony, head of the archdiocese.
About 33 women accused him of abusing them when they were young. That’s five decades of abuse.
In 2002, he was charged with 29 counts of molesting girls. He was taken off a cruise ship on its way to Russia to face the charges; authorities thought he was trying to flee. But his case was dismissed in 2003 after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the charges were too old….

UN panel confronts Vatican on child sex abuse by clergy  16 January 2014 ….The Vatican has been confronted publicly for the first time over the sexual abuse of children by clergy, at a UN hearing in Geneva.
….Last month, the Vatican refused a request from the UN’s Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) for data on abuse, on the grounds that it only released such information if requested to do so by another country as part of legal proceedings.
….”The view of committee is that the best way to prevent abuses is to reveal old ones – openness instead of sweeping offences under the carpet,” Kirsten Sandberg, chairwoman of the 18-strong CRC, told the Vatican delegation.
“It seems to date your procedures are not very transparent.” The Vatican was asked why it continued to describe abuse as an offence against morals rather than a crime against children. ….Archbishop Silvano Tomasi said: “To prevent abuse of minors is a real, immediate concern.”
On prosecution of offenders, he said priests were “not functionaries of the Vatican but citizens of their countries and fall under the jurisdiction of their own countries”….

UN slams Vatican for ‘efforts to cover up’ pedophile priests in sex abuse scandal
By Alexander Smith, NBC News contributor  1/16/2014 The Vatican faced blistering criticism from a United Nations committee Thursday over allegations it protected pedophile priests at the expense of victims in what constituted a worldwide sex abuse scandal. It was the first time representatives of the Holy See were questioned in public on cases of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy around the world. The U.N. committee’s main human rights investigator, Sara Oviedo, led the most intense grilling the Holy See has received on the issue, according to a report by The Associated Press.
Given the “zero tolerance” policy of the Vatican, she asked, why were there “efforts to cover up and obscure these types of cases?”….

Scathing UN report demands Vatican ‘immediately’ act against child sexual abuse  The United Nations has demanded the Vatican “immediately remove” all clergy who are known or suspected child abusers and turn them over to authorities.  In an unprecedented report the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child said the Holy See should also hand over its archives on the sexual abuse of tens of thousands of children so culprits, as well as “those who concealed their crimes”, could be held accountable.
The watchdog’s exceptionally blunt paper – the most far-reaching critique of the Catholic Church hierarchy by the world body – followed its public grilling of Vatican officials last month.
“The committee is gravely concerned that the Holy See has not acknowledged the extent of the crimes committed, has not taken the necessary measures to address cases of child sexual abuse and to protect children, and has adopted policies and practices which have led to the continuation of the abuse by and the impunity of the perpetrators,” the report said….
Abusers had been moved from parish to parish or other countries “in an attempt to cover-up such crimes,” it added.
“Due to a code of silence imposed on all members of the clergy under penalty of excommunication, cases of child sexual abuse have hardly ever been reported to the law enforcement authorities in the countries where such crimes occurred,” the UN body said….

Poland’s Roman Catholic Church faces first abuse lawsuit 6 February 2014 A Polish man who was abused as a child by a priest is suing the country’s Roman Catholic Church – the first such civil case in the country. The man – who is only identified as 25-year-old Marcin K – is demanding 47,500 euros ($64,500; £39,550) in damages. The priest has been convicted and is now serving a two-year jail sentence. The church leadership apologised to all child abuse victims last year, but insisted it would not pay damages for the crimes of individual clergymen. On Wednesday, the UN said the Vatican should “immediately remove” all clergy who were known or suspected child abusers. Documents Reveal Decades Of Child Abuse Among Some Chicago Priests by David Schaper January 21, 2014 Papers documenting allegation of sexual abuse by priests in the Chicago Archdiocese were released to the public today by victims’ attorneys. The documents cover only 30 of at least 65 priests for whom the Chicago church says it has substantiated claims of child abuse. The papers, put online, were made available through settlements between Church and victims’ lawyers. Church officials said most of the abuse occurred before 1988, none after 1996, and that all were ultimately reported to authorities.

We have new revelations today detailing decades of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in Chicago. Thousands of pages of documents, released by victims’ attorneys, show how the church hierarchy mishandled accusations of abuse.
NPR’s David Schaper reports.
DAVID SCHAPER, BYLINE: The documents tell one heartbreaking story after another – 6,000 pages detailing not just how children and adult victims were abused by trusted priests, but also how church officials often bungled their responses, failing to turn sexual predators over to criminal authorities and often shuttling the offending priests from parish to parish, where they abused again….
SCHAPER: That deception, says Anderson, came from the cardinal on down. And he says not only were the victims and their families deceived, but so too were parishioners where offending priests were transferred, as well as the police and the public at large. In one case in 1979, a priest raped a 13-year old boy and later warned him at gunpoint not to tell anyone. The documents show the boy’s parents were assured that the priest would get treatment and would be kept away from minors, but he wasn’t. Within a year, that priest was returned to ministry in another parish where he abused again.
In another case, the late Cardinal John Cody tells a priest accused of sexually abusing a girl that the allegations, quote, “should just be forgotten,” adding that no good can come of trying to prove or disprove it. That priest later abused again….

Catholic diocese to file for bankruptcy protection Matt Volz, Associated Press January 31, 2014
HELENA, Montana (AP) — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena planned to file for bankruptcy protection Friday as part of a proposed settlement of $15 million for hundreds of victims who say clergy members sexually abused them over decades while the church covered it up.
Diocese spokesman Dan Bartleson said the bankruptcy reorganization plan comes after confidential mediation sessions with the plaintiffs’ attorneys and insurers, resulting in the deals to resolve the abuse claims. The settlement details are being worked out, but the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Montana would be responsible for approving and supervising the disbursement of $15 million to compensate the 362 victims identified in the two lawsuits. In addition, at least $2.5 million will be set aside for victims who come forward later, Bartleson said….
The Helena diocese is the 11th in the nation to seek bankruptcy protection in the face of sex-abuse claims   The two lawsuits filed in 2011 claim clergy members groomed and then abused the children from the 1940s to the 1970s. They claim the diocese shielded the offenders and knew or should have known the threat they posed to children….
In one of the lawsuits, the plaintiffs said they were repeatedly raped, fondled or forced to perform sexual acts while at school, on the playground, on camping trips or at the victims’ homes.
The second lawsuit, filed a week after the first in 2011, contained similar allegations against priests, but also alleged that nuns at the Ursuline Academy in St. Ignatius abused dozens of Native American children….

Los Angeles bishop kept altar boy list from police probing clergy abuse February 19, 2014
Associated Press LOS ANGELES –  When Los Angeles police were investigating allegations of child abuse by a Roman Catholic priest in 1988, they asked for a list of altar boys at the last parish where the priest worked.
Archbishop Roger Mahony told a subordinate not to give the list, saying he didn’t want the boys to be scarred by the investigation and that he felt the altar boys were too old to be potential victims, according to a deposition made public Wednesday.
The detectives investigating allegations against Nicolas Aguilar Rivera, a visiting Mexican priest, ultimately got the names of the boys from parish families. They determined the priest molested at least 26 boys during his 10 months in Los Angeles, according to the priest’s confidential archdiocese file and police records made public by attorneys for the victims.
Twenty-five of the alleged victims were altar boys and the 26th was training with the priest to be one, said Anthony DeMarco, a plaintiff attorney. It’s not clear what impact Mahony’s action had on the investigation, though at the time police complained that the archdiocese wasn’t fully cooperating.
Mahony’s deposition was obtained by The Associated Press and is part of the evidence included in a settlement of abuse claims against Aguilar Rivera and four other priests. The archdiocese, the nation’s largest, agreed to pay $13 million to 17 victims.
Since 2006, the archdiocese has paid more than $700 million to settle clergy abuse lawsuits by hundreds of victims. The statement comes as representatives of the Salvation Army prepare to appear before the royal commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse on Tuesday. The commission is preparing to investigate the charity’s movement of staff linked to sex abuse between children’s homes in New South Wales and Queensland….
At a child abuse inquiry in Victoria last year it was revealed that since 1997 the Salvation Army had received 474 abuse claims, 470 of which arose from its children’s homes, over 30 to 40 years.

(CNN) — An Australian commission is hearing allegations of the physical and sexual abuse of boys in the care of the Salvation Army over several decades.
The shocking treatment at some of the organization’s boys homes included rape, beatings, locking boys in cages and, in one case, forcing a boy to eat his own vomit, the commission was told Tuesday.
The public hearings, taking place in Sydney, are part of a wide-ranging investigation into how Australian institutions responded to cases of child sexual abuse.
The current phase is focusing on the Salvation Army’s response to abuse that took place in four of its boys homes in the states of Queensland and New South Wales in the 1960s and ’70s….
The Salvation Army isn’t denying the abuse, which came to light previously. It has apologized, admitting that hundreds of boys suffered in its care….
Those who did complain weren’t generally taken seriously.
“In cases when abuse was reported, the boys were often disbelieved and were punished for reporting what were characterized as ‘lies,'” he told the hearing….

Police knew of Qld abuse millionaire  By Eoin Blackwell  AAP February 05, 2014  QUEENSLAND police were aware of allegations boys held in state care were being flown to Sydney to be abused by a millionaire and a chef in the mid 1970s, a former assistant police commissioner says.
Retired assistant commissioner David Jefferies has told the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse he received information a Queensland millionaire, known as JA, flew boys to Sydney to be abused as part of a pedophile ring.
“This JA was certainly known as a millionaire and had, I believe, a construction business, and we certainly had received information about children actually going to his home,” Mr Jefferies said.
“We were aware that boys in state care and from some institutions had in fact been flown to Sydney.”….
Working for Queensland’s Juvenile Aid Bureau from 1968 to 1989, Mr Jefferies said he investigated allegations four pedophiles were operating in the northern Brisbane suburbs and the Gold Coast in the early 1970s.
One, JA, was a millionaire, and the other was a school teacher known to the commission as JB.
He said four suspects were arrested, but he and his partner were waved off investigating JA and JB and told to hand the case to more experienced officers….

A report about the results of an internal probe at the U.K. public broadcaster is expected to be published in February.
LONDON — The final report on an internal BBC probe is expected to state that late radio and TV host Jimmy Savile sexually abused “many hundreds and potentially up to 1,000 people” while working for the U.K. public broadcaster, the Guardian’s sister publication The Observer reported.
At least 138 victims are believed to be pursuing civil actions against the BBC, according to the newspaper report. Last year, a police report cited 214 abuse cases and about 450 overall complaints recorded by authorities. The BBC report is also set to call on the broadcaster’s leadership to reform a “culture of secrecy,” according to the paper….

A new report is about to come out saying that Savile abused teens right on the premises of government-run broadcasting facilities.
Jimmy Savile, an actor, TV and radio announcer—or “presenter” as they call it in Britain—and well-loved charity spokesman, passed away in 2011, but only months later, rumors of his rampant abuse of British teens who were enamored of his stardom began to leak out.
In 2012, allegations of his sexual abuse of vulnerable young Brits gained critical mass, and a full-scale government investigation was launched—as the British Broadcasting Service (BBC) is owned and run by the government. This gave Savile’s crimes an air of government approval when it became known that many BBC officials may have known of Savile’s crimes but covered them up, assisted in them, or at the least ignored them.
By June of 2013, not only had hundreds of cases of abuse come to light but the investigation had spread to other BBC employees.

The BBC Trust chairman Chris Patten and director general Tony Hall will come under renewed pressure to show that the corporation has decisively changed a culture that allowed Savile to abuse his victims unchecked during more than 40 years as a presenter of TV shows including Top of the Pops and as a Radio 1 DJ. Savile died in 2011.
Former court of appeal judge Dame Janet Smith’s report will say the number of victims of Savile’s sexual activities may never be known but that his behaviour had been recognised by BBC executives who took no action, according to the Observer. At least 138 victims are pursuing civil actions against the BBC.

Dave Lee Travis ‘Was Snogging My Face Off.. I Thought I was Going To Be Raped’, Woman Tells Court The Huffington Post UK/PA 16/01/2014 A “petrified” woman has told how she thought she was going to be raped by DJ Dave Lee Travis when she was 15 at a Showaddywaddy concert, a court heard.
The alleged victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said the former Radio 1 DJ became “frisky” with her after she was invited into his caravan at the gig on a farm in the late 1970s.
In a videoed police interview played to the court, the woman said she was talking about music with Travis inside the caravan when he offered to sign her poster….
Travis, whose real name is David Patrick Griffin, is charged with 13 counts of indecent assault dating back to between 1976 and 2003, and one count of sexual assault in 2008.
The 68-year-old, from Buckinghamshire, is accused of assaulting 11 women, one of whom was 15 at the time of the alleged crime.

Coronation Street’s Bill Roache ‘Raped’ 14-Year-Old Twice, Court Hears The Huffington Post UK  16/01/2014 A woman allegedly raped by Coronation Street star William Roache kept quiet for decades because she blamed herself, a court has heard.
She described how she was a “gullible” teenager – “a kid” – who was raped on two different occasions in 1967 at the actor’s then-home in Lancashire.
A jury at Preston Crown Court has been told the woman finally came forward to police last year in the wake of a number of celebrity sex scandals.
In her police interview played to the court, the woman told a female officer: “All these years I have never brought it to anyone’s attention. I chose not to say anything.
“I thought I was to blame, especially the second time.
“I was gullible … I was a kid. I would never have repeated it to anyone.”
But by last year she said “it has started to bother me because there might be other people that this has happened to”.
She continued: “It started where I can’t sleep, it is there at the back of my mind all the time.” The woman detailed how in the first alleged assault Roache – who knew her, she said – had sex with her with “no warning” in the bedroom of his bungalow….
Roache, 81, of Wilmslow, Cheshire – who has played Ken Barlow in the ITV soap for more than 50 years – denies the rapes. He has also pleaded not guilty to five counts of indecent assault involving four other complainants aged 16 and under. The alleged offences are said to have occurred between 1965 and 1971….

THE son of a woman accusing Bill Roache of rape has said she wouldn’t report him as she “didn’t want to cause a rift in his family”.  17th January 2014 The man, who was not identified, added that he only became of his mum’s experience after the Jimmy Savile scandal. Giving evidence, the alleged rape victim’s son said he recalled a conversation with her about the time the Jimmy Savile and Cyril Smith cases emerged in 2012…. The man told his mum that she should go to the police as there may be more women out there and that “sometimes it takes that one person to have the strength to come forward”.
“She really didn’t want to. She was telling me straight away that some things are just best left alone in the past. “She didn’t want to cause a rift between his family and on top of that she desperately didn’t want anyone to find about it.”
He said that remained the case and some members of her family still don’t know.

Freddie Starr arrested again in sex probe  Comedian Freddie Starr has been arrested for a third time over allegations of sex offences.  Wednesday 12/02/2014
The 71-year-old answered police bail today and was told he faces further claims under Operation Yewtree, the inquiry launched after abuse claims against Jimmy Savile.
He was first arrested in November 2012 over allegations linked to Savile, and has been arrested twice more over additional claims that have no link to the late DJ.
Scotland Yard did not name the performer, but released a statement that said: “Today ‘Yewtree 2’ was further arrested after returning to a police station to answer bail….

Judge Joanna Cutts QC told Wright: “These offences were so serious that it is beyond question that only a custodial sentence can be justified.

“This was prolonged activity, the boys were groomed by a master at a school responsible for their care.”….

Teachers at 130 UK schools involved in sex crimes Mon Jan 20, 2014  Teachers at 130 schools in Britain have been involved in sex crimes against hundreds of children, an analysis has revealed. The analysis by British newspaper The Times indicated that dozens of leading public schools as well as 20 elite preparatory schools in the country are included in the list. According to the paper, the list features 64 mainstream positive private-sector establishments, most of them boarding schools, where at least one male teacher has been convicted of sexual abuse against young boys, and a further 30 at which a number of staff were sentenced over similar charges.
This comes as dozens of private schools in Britain are already under investigation over child sex abuse allegations, spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s….

LONDON — Britain’s National Crime Agency said it has broken up an international crime group that live-streamed child sexual abuse from the Philippines.
The agency said the joint investigation with authorities in the United States and Australia yielded 29 arrests for people in 12 countries who had paid to watch the online abuse, which in some cases was arranged by members of the children’s own families.
In a statement, the NCA said that the “use of Web cams to stream live abuse, particularly from the developing world, is a significant and emerging threat.”
The investigation was started after a routine visit by police in the English county of Northamptonshire to a registered sex offender, the NCA said. The probe began in 2012 and resulted in 15 children ages 6 to 15 being safeguarded from abuse….

Disney World Workers Among 22 Nabbed in Child-Sex Sting By Jeff Black A sting operation by Florida police has led to the arrest of 22 men who sought children online for sex, officials said Wednesday. Dubbed operation “Be Mine,” detectives occupied a vacant house in the Orlando area and posed as children or the parents of children in online chat rooms. When suspects solicited the officers, arrangements were made to meet at the home for sex acts, police said. As the suspects arrived at the Clermont home, they were taken into custody, a news release from the Lake County, Fla., sheriff’s office said. Three of the men arrested….were identified as Walt Disney World employees by police. January 24th, 2014 TRACY MCLAUGHLIN QMI AGENCY  ORILLILA, ON — Police say there are eight additional child victims in a sexual assault case that includes accusations of bestiality, conspiracy to kidnap and rape a child, voyeurism and the making of child pornography.  Police have also introduced new allegations that some children were drugged before they were sexually assaulted.  Shayne Lund, 22, of Midland, Ont., has been in custody since October on 110 sex-related charges. Two female friends of his are also in custody. It is alleged the women helped Lund get access to children between the ages of two and five. Avery Taylor, 20, is facing 20 charges. Kathryn Thompson, 19, faces 26 ch arges. Both are from Orillia. The new allegations against the three accused include administering a noxious substance to children as young as two years old, coercing children to have sex with animals, coercing them to commit voyeurism and videotaping them in sexual acts….

Ottawa-Gatineau part of national human trafficking blitz By Derek Spalding, OTTAWA CITIZEN January 28, 2014 OTTAWA — Police from across the country identified girls as young as 15 being forced into prostitution, according to numbers from a national anti-human trafficking blitz conducted last week.
Officers in 26 cities, from Alberta to Newfoundland, were involved in the two-day campaign that yielded interviews with 330 women, eight arrests and 28 individual charges.
Despite appearances, the women do not want to be prostitutes, according to a news release issued by Ottawa police Tuesday
“Investigators found several teenagers and young women were being forced to perform through threats of violence, physical intimidation, drug dependency and other forms of coercion,” the release states. “Part or all of the proceeds from the sexual encounters were kept by their controller or pimp.”

Ottawa Police takes part in a National Focus on Young Women Coerced Into Sex Trade Tuesday, January 28, 2014 (Ottawa)—Last week, police services from across Canada participated in a two-day blitz focusing on the growing concern that young women are being forced to participate in the sex trade.  This project was coordinated by the Durham Regional Police Service.
“Operation Northern Spotlight” involved 26 police services from across Canada and took place on Wednesday January 22 and Thursday January 23, 2014.
Over 330 women, some as young as 15 years of age, were interviewed. Police found some were being forced to perform sexual acts, multiple times a day, for paying male customers.

USF researchers unearthed 55 bodies from Dozier, more than state claimed  Ben Montgomery, Times Staff Writer  Tuesday, January 28, 2014  TAMPA
….Researchers from the University of South Florida are trying to help. They announced Tuesday they have exhumed the remains of 55 boys who died at the notorious state-run reform school in the Panhandle town of Marianna.
That’s 24 more than the 31 the Florida Department of Law Enforcement found during a cursory investigation in 2009 on orders from then-Gov. Charlie Crist. The FDLE relied on incomplete school records and did not use ground-penetrating radar to map the cemetery.
The number even exceeds USF’s earlier estimate of roughly 50, which was based on ground-penetrating radar….
The state closed the facility in June 2011 after a century-long cycle of scandal and short-lived reform. The school, 60 miles west of Tallahassee, was founded in 1900 and was once the largest of its kind in the nation. It has been known as the Florida Industrial School for Boys, the Florida School for Boys and the Dozier School for Boys. Over the years, kids were locked in irons, beaten with a leather strap in a building called the White House, locked in isolation for as long as three weeks and hog-tied.
In October 2008, five former wards went public with stories of extreme physical and sexual abuse at the hands of guards. They were featured in a Tampa Bay Times series called For Their Own Good. More than 500 men have come forward with similar stories of being abused by staff at the school, according to a lawyer with Masterson & Hoag, the St. Petersburg firm representing the men….

Trustee Heather Partida made the statement following a closed session meeting in which she and fellow board members unanimously approved the settlement. “We have learned painful, necessary lessons about the culture we must have in place if we are to be worthy of the trust parents place in us,” Superintendent Dana Eaton said after the settlement was announced.
The district’s insurance will pay the families of eight special needs children who were physically and verbally abused by the same teacher at Loma Vista and Krey elementary schools.
Filed in August, the federal lawsuit names the instructor, Dina Holder, as well as former Loma Vista Elementary Principal Lauri James, former Superintendent Merrill Grant, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Margaret Kruse, Director of Special Education Margo Olson, and former Director of Special Education Jean Anthony. The suit claimed that Holder violated the children’s Constitutional rights by using “unjustified and unreasonable force” against them. All of the juveniles were between the ages of 13 and 17, and six of the rescued teens were from New Jersey, according to Aaron T. Ford, the Special Agent In Charge of Newark’s FBI division. A 10-month investigation that targeted sex trafficking at Super Bowl XLVIII resulted in the rescue of 25 child prostitutes and the arrest of roughly 45 “pimps” and others associated with exploiting teens as sex workers in New Jersey, federal investigators said today.

Wernher von Braun, for example, a Nazi rocket scientist, led a team that helped the U.S. develop the vehicle employed for the first nuclear missile test, and aided efforts to launch first Western satellite in 1958. Hundreds of Nazi scientists were given citizenship between 1945 and 1955. But what’s been unknown — until today — is the extent to which former Nazis were employed to test LSD and other interrogation techniques on captured Soviet spies.
According to a book released this week by journalist Annie Jacobsen, U.S. intelligence hired Third Reich scientists in capacities stranger and more nefarious than anything reported before.
“Under Operation Paperclip, which began in May of 1945, the scientists who helped the Third Reich wage war continued their weapons-related work for the U.S. government, developing rockets, chemical and biological weapons, aviation and space medicine (for enhancing military pilot and astronaut performance), and many other armaments at a feverish and paranoid pace that came to define the Cold War,”  Jacobsen writes. Her book is titled  Operation Paperclip: The Secret Intelligence Program that Brought Nazi Scientists to America….
Quoting a memorandum on a program titled U.S. Artichoke, she writes, “Between 4 June 1952 and 18 June 1952, an IS&O [CIA Inspection and Security Office] team… applied Artichoke techniques to two operational cases in a safe house. In the first case, light dosages of drugs coupled with hypnosis were used to induce a complete hypnotic trance… This trance was held for approximately one hour and forty minutes of interrogation with a subsequent total amnesia produced.”
She also posits that the CIA teamed up with former Nazis to develop interrogation techniques.
“The CIA teamed up with Army, Air Force and Naval Intelligence to run one of the most nefarious, classified, enhanced interrogation programs of the Cold War,” Jacobsen writes. “The work took place inside a clandestine facility in the American zone of occupied Germany, called Camp King. At a secret black site in the years after the end of WWII, CIA and US intelligence operatives tested LSD and other interrogation techniques on captured Soviet spies—all with the help of former Nazi doctors. An excerpt from Annie Jacobsen’s Operation Paperclip, published this week.
It was 1946 and World War II had ended less than one year before. In Top Secret memos being circulated in the elite ‘E’ ring of the Pentagon, the Joint Chiefs of Staff were preparing for ‘total war’ with the Soviets—to include atomic, chemical, and biological warfare. They even set an estimated start date of 1952. The Joint Chiefs believed that the U.S. could win this future war, but not for reasons that the general public knew about. Since war’s end, across the ruins of the Third Reich, U.S. military officers had been capturing and then hiring Hitler’s weapons makers, in a Top Secret program that would become known as Operation Paperclip. Soon, more than 1,600 of these men and their families would be living the American dream, right here in the United States. From these Nazi scientists, U.S. military and intelligence organizations culled knowledge of Hitler’s most menacing weapons including sarin gas and weaponized bubonic plague.
As the Cold War progressed, the program expanded and got stranger still. In 1948, Operation Paperclip’s Brigadier General Charles E. Loucks, Chief of U.S. Chemical Warfare Plans in Europe, was working with Hitler’s former chemists when one of the scientists, Nobel Prize winner Richard Kuhn, shared with General Loucks information about a drug with military potential being developed by Swiss chemists. This drug, a hallucinogen, had astounding potential properties if successfully weaponized. In documents recently discovered at the U.S. Army Heritage Center in Pennsylvania, Loucks quickly became enamored with the idea that this drug could be used on the battlefield to “incapacitate not kill.” The drug was Lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD.
It did not take long for the CIA to become interested and involved. Perhaps LSD could also be used for off-the-battlefield purposes, a means through which human behavior could be manipulated and controlled. In an offshoot of Operation Paperclip, the CIA teamed up with Army, Air Force and Naval Intelligence to run one of the most nefarious, classified, enhanced interrogation programs of the Cold War. The work took place inside a clandestine facility in the American zone of occupied Germany, called Camp King. The facility’s chief medical doctor was Operation Paperclip’s Dr. Walter Schreiber, the former Surgeon General of the Third Reich. When Dr. Schreiber was secretly brought to America—to work for the U.S. Air Force in Texas—his position was filled with another Paperclip asset, Dr. Kurt Blome, the former Deputy Surgeon General of the Third Reich and the man in charge of the Nazi’s program to weaponize bubonic plague. The activities that went on at Camp King between 1946 and the late 1950s have never been fully accounted for by either the Department of Defense or the CIA….
Initially, Bluebird was to be a so-called “defensive” program. Officers were instructed “to apply special methods of interrogation for the purpose of evaluation of Russian practices,” only. In other words, to merely mimic Soviet techniques. But it did not take long for the CIA to decide that the best defense is offense, and the Agency began developing enhanced interrogation techniques of its own. FOIA documents reveal that the CIA saw LSD as a potential, “truth serum.” What if its officers could drug captured Soviet spies, interrogate them using LSD, and somehow make them forget that they’d talked? Inside Camp King, the LSD program was expanded and given a new code name.
“Bluebird was rechristened Artichoke,” writes John Marks, a former State Department official and authority on the CIA’s mind control programs. The goal of the Artichoke interrogation program, Marks explains, was “modifying behavior through covert means.” According to the program’s administrator, Richard Helms—the future director of the CIA—using drugs like LSD were a means to that end. “We felt that it was our responsibility not to lag behind the Russians or the Chinese in this field, and the only way to find out what the risks were was to test things such as LSD and other drugs that could be used to control human behavior,” Helms later told journalist David Frost, in an interview, in 1978. Soon, other U.S. intelligence agencies were brought on board to help conduct these controversial interrogation experiments at Camp King. As declassified dossiers reveal, with them they brought Nazi scientists from Operation Paperclip….

There they bound Theologo, smashed her head with a rock, doused her with petrol and set her alight as a sacrificial offering to the devil. They also set her friend alight. Theologo died a week later from severe burns.
Wagner was handed a life sentence for the murder and a further 18 years for trying to murder her friend. Harwood was sentenced to 20 years for being an accomplice….

Gaby Breitenbach has seen and heard some awful things. The German psychotherapist is telling me about how sometimes, from a very young age, women are systematically tortured by people seeking to split their minds into multiple identities. The desire is to control the victims, of course, but also to leave them with an identity that seems perfectly normal to strangers. While the victim’s everyday identity will have no “memory” of the trauma they’ve experienced, Breitenbach says the abusers are able to “summon” the other identities with various triggers. This can be something as simple as a ringtone, for example.
This method of mind control is known as “ritual abuse.” Most of the time the abuse is sexual in nature. Sometimes the abusers crave power; sometimes they’re just being cruel. Sometimes they’re pseudo-religious nutjobs, sometimes they’re fascists, and oftentimes they are organized crime networks. Sometimes the abusers use their victims to gain membership to a secret society; sometimes they flick a switch in their minds to make them commit suicide. The world can be an incredibly shitty place.
Last month, Breitenbach opened a safehouse to treat victims of ritual abuse in Germany. Vielseits, which translates to versatility, is the first of its kind in Europe and offers trauma therapy to anyone who walks through its doors….
Can you tell me about the kind of women who seek help at Vielseits?
All the women who end up with us are victims of organized, sadistic, and sexual violence, who have been subjected to mind control. There are also organizations practicing ritual abuse with a kind of spiritual superstructure where certain ideologies come into play, such as neo-fascist mindsets or different pseudo-religious groups, like Scientology or satanic cults.
From an outsider’s perspective, these are women who appear to have led seemingly normal lives—their everyday persona wouldn’t have been aware of the abuse they were subjected to at night, weekends, or on school holidays. These traumatic experiences are contained in different parts of the identity, so they’re kept away from the conscious, and the person has no knowledge of the trauma they’ve experienced.
How are these personas created?
The victims are subjected to near-death situations—with the help of electric shocks, waterboarding, or other forms of torture—from an early age, and then they’re “rescued” by their tormentors. At some point the victim’s psyche will develop an automated response—it will split, in a bid to survive. As a consequence of the systematic torture, the victims can develop a range of different identities throughout their lifetimes. Offenders perpetrating the abuse hold the key to this system of split identities and have the power to evoke a specific set of behaviors using triggers—which can be hand signs or certain smells or sounds, like a ringtone….

India’s top court has stopped an inhuman practice of “dedicating” young girls to the goddess in a southern Indian temple, a ritual that eventually pushes victims into life-long sex slavery.
The court intervention came even as the fate of hundreds of helpless girls was being decided by the “holy men” who fancied that the children should be ceremonially dedicated to the goddess as “Devadasis”, or temple prostitutes, on the full-moon night of 14 February.
Young women are dedicated to the goddess when they are about five years old and are forced to become sex slaves when they reach puberty.
The Devadasi system is a form of public prostitution traditionally authorised by the custodians of religion until it was banned in the country in 1988.
Devadasis “serving” in temples are auctioned to priests, rich men or landowners, and then they become the “property” of the village, often ending up in brothels.
Every year, young girls from poor and Dalit (lower class) families are sexually exploited for the rest of their lives after being forced to “marry” temple deities in a rite commemorated publicly in Davangere district in the state of Karnataka whose capital is Bangalore, the information technology hub of India….
Quoting a report by the NCW, the bench noted that the practice continues in many rural areas of India, and that an estimated 250,000 lower-caste women are living as Devadasis, after being forced into a barbarous life of prostitution in the guise of custom.
“Even though outlawed, the Devadasi system persists, forcing women into a life time of sexual exploitation,” the court noted.
Dalit women have traditionally been more vulnerable to being sold as Devadasis by priests and village elders who play the religion card to justify such institutions….

Adolfo Constanzo biography
Born on November 1, 1962, Adolfo Constanzo was a serial killer in the 1980s, whose religious cult performed ritual murders. In 1983, Constanzo traveled to Mexico City, where recruited his first disciples. Police say Corriann Cervantes was abducted, then raped and bashed in the head with the lid of a toilet tank and an ashtray until she died. She was kidnapped on Wednesday, but her body was not found until Saturday morning.
Police arrested 17-year-old Jose E. Reyes and a 16-year-old classmate of Corriann’s, who knew her from the alternative high school they both attended in Clear Lake, Texas.

SUNBURY — Nineteen-year-old satanist Miranda Barbour admits to killing Troy LaFerrara of Port Trevorton. In a prison interview Friday night, she said that she considered sparing his life until he said the wrong thing. She also said LaFerrara was one of dozens of such victims she killed in the past six years.
Barbour, with her husband, Elytte Barbour, 22, of Selinsgrove, has been charged by Sunbury police in the Nov. 11 fatal knifing of LaFerrara. She requested an interview that was recorded by the Northumberland County Prison on Friday night.
While she offered scant details of her participation in slayings in Alaska, Texas, North Carolina and California, city police confirmed Saturday they had been working, prior to her revelations Friday night, with investigators from other states and the FBI about Miranda Barbour’s possible connection to other killings. The majority of her murders, she said, took place in Alaska….
She wants to plead guilty to LaFerrara’s murder, and said she is ready to speak with police about her other victims.
“I can pinpoint on a map where you can find them,” she said….
Miranda Barbour said she doesn’t care whether people believe her, that she wanted to tell her story to The Daily Item because she wanted to come clean and stop living a lie. She said she felt no remorse for her victims and said she killed only “bad people,” a belief she traced through a troubled childhood.
She said she was sexually molested at age 4 and was introduced to murder at 13, literally in the hands of a man who led her to satanism — beliefs that she said she held at the time of the LaFerrara homicide.
“I feel it is time to get all of this out,” she said. “I don’t care if people believe me. I just want to get it out.”
Suspect: I joined satanic cult
Miranda said when she was 4, she was sexually molested by a relative.
Elizabeth Dean, Miranda’s mother, confirmed Saturday that her sister’s husband was later arrested and charged with sexual abuse of a minor and sentenced to 14 years in prison.
“It was bad,” Dean said. “I never let (her) stay anywhere except for my sister’s house, and I was devastated when I found out.”
Nine years later, Miranda joined a satanic cult in Alaska. Soon after, Miranda said, she had her first experience in murder.
Barbour said she went with the leader of the satanic cult to meet a man who owed the cult leader money.
“It was in an alley and he (the cult leader) shot him,” she said, declining to identify the cult leader.
“Then he said to me that it was my turn to shoot him. I hate guns. I don’t use guns. I couldn’t do it, so he came behind me and he took his hands and put them on top of mine and we pulled the trigger. And then from there I just continued to kill.”
While in the satanic cult, Miranda became pregnant. The cult did not want her to have the baby, so, she said, members tied her to a bed, gave her drugs and she had an “in-house abortion.”
However, her mother on Saturday said that when Miranda told her about the abortion, she took her daughter to a doctor who said there were no signs of an ended pregnancy.
Miranda said she spent the next three years in Alaska, continuing in the satanic cult and participating in several murders.
“I wasn’t always there (mentally),” she said, adding that she had begun to use drugs. “I knew something was bad inside me and the satanic beliefs brought it out. I embraced it.”….

SUNBURY, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania woman charged with her newlywed husband with killing a man they met through Craigslist admitted to the slaying in a jailhouse interview with a newspaper and said she has killed more than 20 other people across the country, claims police said they are investigating.
In an interview with The Daily Item in Sunbury, 19-year-old Miranda Barbour said she wants to plead guilty to killing Troy LaFerrara in November. She also said in the interview she has killed at least 22 other people from Alaska to North Carolina in the last six years as part of her involvement in a satanic cult.
“I feel it is time to get all of this out. I don’t care if people believe me. I just want to get it out,” Barbour told the newspaper for a story published Saturday night.
Sunbury police Chief Steve Mazzeo told the newspaper that investigators were aware of Miranda Barbour’s claims of involvement in other murders. He said they are “”seriously concerned” and have contacted police in other jurisdictions….

AUGUSTA — A prosecutor recommended in 1999 that 20-year-old Roy Gutfinski Jr. be kept behind bars for as long as possible.
Deputy District Attorney Alan Kelley baldly stated Gutfinski, on trial in a bizarre assault case, would continue to be a problem — both for himself and for society.
“Quite simply, the only guarantee of safety is adult incarceration,” Kelley wrote as a judge was poised to sentence Gutfinski in a ritual blood-letting case that left a 16-year-old girl scarred for life.
Kelley’s words were prophetic.
Gutfinski was convicted of elevated aggravated assault and served 7 1/2 years of the 10-year sentence — one of his various periods in Maine and Massachusetts jails.
This week, now living under the name of Caius Domitius Veiovis after a legal name change in 2008, he pleaded not guilty in a Massachusetts court to three counts each of murder, kidnapping and intimidation of witnesses. The former Augusta man now faces the possibility of three life sentences without parole.
Veiovis, 31, and two others are accused of killing three men on or about Aug. 28 in Pittsfield, Mass., allegedly to prevent one of them from testifying.
A look at Veiovis’ history — largely through Maine court documents and previously published stories — offers a picture of an increasingly self-loathing person who lapsed into recreational drug use, cultivated a fascination with knives and adopted demon worship to repel people….
A neuropsychologist who evaluated him said teachers noted a preocccupation with devil worship and resistance to authority. Another counselor said the boy “exhibited very dangerous and threatening behavior” and didn’t want to change….
Then, in August 1999, he watched in his darkened downtown Augusta apartment as his 17-year-old girlfriend took a razor and sliced a 16-year-old girl in the small of her back.
The wound required 32 stitches to close.
Gutfinski and his girlfriend then licked the blood and kissed.
He told police he was a vampire, but one who was without fangs and able to go about in daylight.
At that 2000 sentencing hearing, Roy C. Gutfinski Sr. told the judge his son was a very active child who was later diagnosed as hyperactive, and hospitalized for drug problems….
After the 2000 conviction, Gutfinski began altering his appearance, with small horns that appear as bumps implanted in his forehead, filing his teeth, reshaping his earlobes and gathering tattoos.
He also had small horns implanted in his septum. However, those long, tooth-like horns in his nose are absent in photos of his recent court appearance in Massachusetts.

JACKSON, Miss. — Future progress for the state’s longtime medical school has collided with the ghosts of Mississippi’s past — the discovery of a 1,000 bodies buried on its campus and the likelihood of more.
Officials of the fast-growing University of Mississippi Medical Center had planned to build a parking garage east of the dental school, where a grove of trees now sits.
But testing in the area revealed 1,000 bodies, believed to have been patients at the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum a century ago.

Two Utah men are suing the Mormon church claiming that decades ago they were sexually molested as boys after the church recruited them to pick pineapples in Hawaii.
A lawsuit filed Wednesday in the 2nd Circuit Court in Hawaii, alleges that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Maui Land and Pineapple Company Inc. and Youth Developmental Enterprises, recruited youths from Mormon communities in Utah and southern Idaho to go to camps in Maui to pick pineapples in the 1970s and 1980s, which led to them being sexually molested.
The camps were closed in the ‘90s, the lawsuit claims.
The men, now 41 and 42, now live in the Salt Lake City area.
The lawsuit claims that Mormon men in their 20s, who qualified for supervisory positions after completing their two-year missions, ran the camps, which recruited minors from church wards and scouting organizations.
The lawsuit claims that one man, who was appointed camp coordinator, branch president and stake high counselor for one of the camps, molested the two boys from 1986 until 1989.
The lawsuit also claims that the defendants knew of the camp coordinator’s “pedophilic sexual violence.”
Cody Craynor, a spokesman for the LDS church, said, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has zero tolerance for abuse of any kind and works actively to prevent abuse. This case was filed yesterday, and many details in the legal complaint are unclear. The church will examine the allegations and respond appropriately.”

Lawsuit: Mormon Boys Molested At Maui Pineapple Farms, Church Knew 01/23/2014 Two Utah men are suing the Mormon church, alleging that, decades ago, they were sexually molested by a church camp coordinator when they worked on a Maui pineapple farm.
The lawsuit was filed in the 2nd Circuit Court in Hawaii on Wednesday. It claims that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and Maui Land & Pineapple Company recruited boys in the 1970s and 80s from Mormon communities to work in the camps, where the plaintiffs, now in their 40s, were molested.
The Maui camps paid boys to pick and grow pineapples and were supervised by LDS men in their twenties who had completed their two-year missions and could help train the boys for missionary life. The defendant, an Idaho man, was a camp coordinator and, in addition to being the boys’ boss, served as their spiritual leader.
The lawsuit claims that the defendant molested the two boys from 1986 until 1988, and that the church knew of the camp coordinator’s “pedophilic sexual violence.”

Ross Cheit, professor of public policy and political science, will discuss the 15-year process of compiling his new book, “The Witch-Hunt Narrative: Politics, Psychology and the Sexual Abuse of Children” in a talk Thursday at the Taubman Center for Public Policy and American Institutions. Cheit sat down with The Herald to discuss the release of his book, the methods and challenges of trial court research and how the collective efforts of Brown undergraduates helped him compile his publication….
The title of the talk is “The Amazing True Story of How 81 Brown Undergraduates Helped Give ‘Extreme Research’ Its Name.” What exactly do you mean by extreme research?
What my book involves is original court trial research. So we are trying to go to trial courts and get documents, often transcripts, but a whole range of documents connected to criminal trials that were in the 1980s and early 1990s. And the cases are all highly contested child sexual abuse cases. So it turns out that because these are not in the computer era, and because they are child sexual abuse cases, in many cases protective orders and statutory protections on identity make these cases sealed. The cases were also enormous. It turns out the ability to just go find and copy the record in these cases takes enormous effort. In some instances, it’s almost heroic, what it takes to put together, this many years later, all the materials. And so at some point, we started calling it extreme research, when a student would work for six months to get a document that becomes one footnote in the book….
What do you mean by “Witch-Hunt” in the title of your book?
The witch-hunt narrative is a really popular story that goes like this: Lots of people were falsely convicted of child sexual abuse in the 1980s and early 1990s. And they were all victims of a witch-hunt. It just doesn’t happen to line up with the facts when you actually look at the cases themselves in detail. But it’s a really popular narrative — I think it’s absolutely fair to say that’s the conventional wisdom. It’s what most people now think is the uncontested truth, and those cases had no basis in fact. And what 15 years of painstaking trial court research (says) is that that’s not a very fair description of those cases, and in fact many of those cases had substantial evidence of abuse. The witch-hunt narrative is that these were all gross injustices to the defendant. In fact, what it looks like in retrospect is the injustices were much more often to children….

Richard Loewenstein, M.D., Assessing dissociative identity disorder (DID) can be difficult, particularly because individuals with this disorder often produce extreme elevations on validity scales on some personality tests and interviews. The goal for this study was to provide information about how to distinguish genuine versus feigned DID on widely used personality tests and interviews. A group of SCID-D-R diagnosed DID patients completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) and a forensic gold standard interview, the Structured Interview of Reported Symptoms (SIRS/SIRS-2). In these three papers, we compare the data from the DID group to that from feigners who were exposed to hours of training about DID (i.e., coached simulators) as well as to a feigning group that was not coached about DID (i.e., uncoached simulators). Across the papers, the coached group generally was better able to imitate DID than was the uncoached group. However, neither group was highly successful in feigning DID. Given that well-coached individuals could not successfully imitate DID on well-established psychological tests, this series of studies provides support for the trauma model of dissociation as well as for the construct validity of DID. Furthermore, the results will help assessors and forensic experts better distinguish genuine from feigned DID.

Ex-student calls teacher over alleged sex abuse, posts talk on YouTube By Holly Yan, Cheri Mossburg and Janet DiGiacomo, CNN Tue January 21, 2014 (CNN) — A woman who says a female teacher from middle school sexually abused her for years decided to confront the teacher — and post video of the exchange on YouTube. Within hours, the educator resigned from her job at another school in California. Police launched an investigation. And the former student, who once felt powerless, now says she feels vindicated knowing the ex-teacher is no longer working with children. The former student, who calls herself “Jamie,” said the abuse started when she was 12 years old. “I am 28 years old and have been waiting years to get up enough courage to report a teacher for sexually abusing me for years,” Jamie’s caption on her YouTube video states. “When I finally got up enough courage to report her, I found out that the statute of limitations was up and she will never have to pay for the things that she did to me.”….

Utah law professor to make case for child-porn victims Restitution  Cassell will argue before the Supreme Court on compensation for child-pornography victims. By Brooke Adams The Salt Lake Tribune  Jan 16 2014  Paul Cassell has advocated passionately in courtrooms across the country that every person who views or distributes an image of child pornography contributes to what victims have described as “death by a thousand cuts” and thus should be held liable for restitution.
On Wednesday, the University of Utah law professor will make that argument before what will be his most important audience yet: the U.S. Supreme Court. It is the first time a crime victim’s attorney has appeared before the court in a criminal case filed by the government; the outcome may result in a historic decision for crime victims’ rights.
The case before the U.S. Supreme Court involves a Texas man who viewed images of an 8-year-old girl identified by the pseudonym “Amy Unknown,” who was sexually abused by her uncle in 1997.
When Amy was 17, she learned that pornographic images of her abuse, taken by her uncle, were being widely circulated on the Internet, which is where Doyle Randall Paroline came across them.
Paroline was arrested in 2009 after an employee at a computer company found sexually explicit images of minors on his computer. Two images of “Amy” were among the nearly 300 child pornography images that investigators later discovered on the machine. Paroline pleaded guilty and received a 24-month prison sentence.
James Marsh, Amy’s attorney, filed a restitution request for $3.4 million — the sum first awarded to his client in a 2008 case under what turned out to be a little-used 1994 federal law that requires mandatory restitution for child pornography victims.
“I didn’t know it was the first request ever filed for a victim of child pornography,” Marsh said of that first case.
But since then, Marsh, who teamed up with Cassell about 4 1/2 years ago, has filed restitution requests on behalf of Amy and other victims of child pornography in hundreds of cases. Amy has received victim notices in more than 1,800 federal child pornography cases. They have won restitution for Amy in 180 cases, collecting about 40 percent of the full amount awarded to her….

Facts of the Case
Doyle R. Paroline pled guilty to possession of 150-300 images of child pornography. Included among those files on his computer were two photographs of Amy Unknown, a victim of child pornography. He was sentenced to 24 months of incarceration followed by release under supervision. Under a federal statute that mandates full restitution to victims of child pornography by those convicted of creating, distributing or possessing such material, the Government and Amy sought restitution in the amount of nearly $3.4 million. The district court denied restitution and held that the statute required the Government to prove that Paroline’s possession of the images was the proximate cause of the injuries for which restitution was sought. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit reversed and held that Paroline was responsible for restitution for all the victim’s losses even if his criminal acts occurred after the victim’s losses.
Question
To recover restitution, must either the government or the victim establish a causal relationship between the defendant’s conduct and the victim’s harm or damages?

What’s your favorite Woody Allen movie? Before you answer, you should know: when I was seven years old, Woody Allen took me by the hand and led me into a dim, closet-like attic on the second floor of our house. He told me to lay on my stomach and play with my brother’s electric train set. Then he sexually assaulted me. He talked to me while he did it, whispering that I was a good girl, that this was our secret, promising that we’d go to Paris and I’d be a star in his movies. I remember staring at that toy train, focusing on it as it traveled in its circle around the attic. To this day, I find it difficult to look at toy trains.
For as long as I could remember, my father had been doing things to me that I didn’t like. I didn’t like how often he would take me away from my mom, siblings and friends to be alone with him. I didn’t like it when he would stick his thumb in my mouth. I didn’t like it when I had to get in bed with him under the sheets when he was in his underwear. I didn’t like it when he would place his head in my naked lap and breathe in and breathe out. I would hide under beds or lock myself in the bathroom to avoid these encounters, but he always found me. These things happened so often, so routinely, so skillfully hidden from a mother that would have protected me had she known, that I thought it was normal. I thought this was how fathers doted on their daughters. But what he did to me in the attic felt different. I couldn’t keep the secret anymore.
When I asked my mother if her dad did to her what Woody Allen did to me, I honestly did not know the answer. I also didn’t know the firestorm it would trigger. I didn’t know that my father would use his sexual relationship with my sister to cover up the abuse he inflicted on me. I didn’t know that he would accuse my mother of planting the abuse in my head and call her a liar for defending me. I didn’t know that I would be made to recount my story over and over again, to doctor after doctor, pushed to see if I’d admit I was lying as part of a legal battle I couldn’t possibly understand. At one point, my mother sat me down and told me that I wouldn’t be in trouble if I was lying – that I could take it all back. I couldn’t. It was all true. Woody Allen’s lawyer blames ‘vengeful lover’ for child molestation controversy By Alan Duke, CNN Mon February 3, 2014 Los Angeles (CNN) — Renewed accusations that Woody Allen molested an adopted daughter two decades ago were “engineered by a vengeful lover,” the filmmaker’s lawyer told CNN on Monday.
The allegations were “fully vetted and rejected by independent authorities,” Allen attorney Elkan Abramowitz said in a written statement.
The controversy dates back to 1992 after the revelation that Allen, then 56, was having an affair with Soon-Yi Previn, Mia Farrow’s 19-year-old adopted daughter with composer Andre Previn. Allen and Previn married five years later.
Allen’s legal and public relations teams scrambled to respond to an open letter written by Dylan Farrow and published by The New York Times on Saturday recounting her allegation that Allen sexually assaulted her when she was a child.
“What’s your favorite Woody Allen movie? Before you answer, you should know: when I was seven years old, Woody Allen took me by the hand and led me into a dim, closet-like attic on the second floor of our house,” Farrow wrote. “He told me to lay on my stomach and play with my brother’s electric train set. Acting Justice Elliott Wilk of New York’s State Supreme Court “said it was unlikely that Mr. Allen could be prosecuted for sexual abuse based on the evidence,” the newspaper reported. “But while a team of experts concluded that Dylan was not abused, the judge said he found the evidence inconclusive.”
A former prosecutor who decided against pressing charges in the case declined to comment on the details in Dylan Farrow’s letter Sunday.
“As a prosecutor I really can’t comment on the substance of the statement of this now young woman. As a father of a child not too much older than this young woman, I can only say I hope she finds some peace and solace in the way she’s expressing herself,” former Connecticut State’s Attorney Frank Maco said. “I hope she had access to my written statement of decision. My statement is as valid today as it was 20 years ago.”
In 1993, Maco — who’s since retired — told reporters he believed there was probable cause to arrest Allen. But he said he decided not to press charges, with Mia Farrow’s support, “rather than exposing the child to possible harm.”….

He offers a carefully worded claim that he passed a lie detector test — in fact, he refused to take the test administered by the state police (he hired someone to administer his own test, which authorities refused to accept as evidence). 10 Undeniable Facts About the Woody Allen Sexual-Abuse Allegation By Maureen Orth  February 7 2014
This week, a number of commentators have published articles containing incorrect and irresponsible claims regarding the allegation of Woody Allen’s having sexually abused his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. As the author of two lengthy, heavily researched and thoroughly fact-checked articles that deal with that allegation—the first published in 1992, when Dylan was seven, and the second last fall, when she was 28—I feel obliged to set the record straight.
1.   Mia never went to the police about the allegation of sexual abuse. Her lawyer told her on August 5, 1992, to take the seven-year-old Dylan to a pediatrician, who was bound by law to report Dylan’s story of sexual violation to law enforcement and did so on August 6.
2.   Allen had been in therapy for alleged inappropriate behavior toward Dylan with a child psychologist before the abuse allegation was presented to the authorities or made public….
3.   Allen refused to take a polygraph administered by the Connecticut state police. Instead, he took one from someone hired by his legal team. The Connecticut state police refused to accept the test as evidence….
4.   Allen subsequently lost four exhaustive court battles—a lawsuit, a disciplinary charge against the prosecutor, and two appeals—and was made to pay more than $1 million in Mia’s legal fees….
5.   In his 33-page decision, Judge Wilk found that Mr. Allen’s behavior toward Dylan was “grossly inappropriate and that measures must be taken to protect her.”….
6. Dylan’s claim of abuse was consistent with the testimony of three adults who were present that day….
7.   The Yale-New Haven Hospital Child Sex Abuse Clinic’s finding that Dylan had not been sexually molested, cited repeatedly by Allen’s attorneys, was not accepted as reliable by Judge Wilk, or by the Connecticut state prosecutor who originally commissioned them….
8.   Allen changed his story about the attic where the abuse allegedly took place. First, Allen told investigators he had never been in the attic where the alleged abuse took place….
9.   The state attorney, Maco, said publicly he did have probable cause to press charges against Allen but declined, due to the fragility of the “child victim.”….
10.   I am not a longtime friend of Mia Farrow’s, and I did not make any deal with her….

There was an unwritten rule in Mia Farrow’s house that Woody Allen was never supposed to be left alone with their seven-year-old adopted daughter, Dylan. Over the last two years, sources close to Farrow say, he has been discussing alleged “inappropriate” fatherly behavior toward Dylan in sessions with Dr. Susan Coates, a child psychologist. In more than two dozen interviews conducted for this article, most of them with individuals who are on intimate terms with the Mia Farrow household, Allen was described over and over as being completely obsessed with the bright little blonde girl. He could not seem to keep his hands off her. He would monopolize her totally, to the exclusion of her brothers and sisters, and spend hours whispering to her. She was fond of her daddy, but if she tried to go off and play, he would follow her from room to room, or he would sit and stare at her. During the school year, Allen would arrive early at Mia Farrow’s West Side Manhattan apartment, sit on Dylan’s bed and watch her wake up, and take her to school. At her birthday party last July, at Farrow’s country house in Bridgewater, Connecticut, he promised that he would keep away from the children’s table so that Dylan could enjoy her birthday party with her friends, but he seemed unable to do that. Allen, who was a fearful figure to many in the household, was so needy where Dylan was concerned that he hovered over her through the whole party, and when the cake arrived, he was right behind her, helping to blow out the candles.
Calling attention to someone’s birthday-party behavior may seem trivial at best. However, Dr. Coates, who just happened to be in Mia’s apartment to work with one of her other children, had only to witness a brief greeting between Woody and Dylan before she began a discussion with Mia that resulted in Woody’s agreeing to address the issue through counseling. At that point Coates didn’t know that, according to several sources, Woody, wearing just underwear, would take Dylan to bed with him and entwine his body around hers; or that he would have her suck his thumb; or that often when Dylan went over to his apartment he would head straight for the bedroom with her so that they could get into bed and play. He called Mia a “spoilsport” when she objected to what she referred to as “wooing.” Mia has told people that he said that her concerns were her own sickness, and that he was just being warm. For a long time, Mia backed down. Her love for Woody had always been mixed with fear. He could reduce her to a pulp when he gave vent to his temper, but she was also in awe of him, because he always presented himself as “a morally superior person.”
One summer day in Connecticut, when Dylan was four and Woody was applying suntan lotion to her nude body, he alarmed Mia’s mother, actress Maureen O’Sullivan, and sister Tisa Farrow when he began rubbing his finger in the crack between her buttocks. Mia grabbed the lotion out of his hand, and O’Sullivan asked, “How do you want to be remembered by your children?” “As a good father,” Woody answered. “Well, that’s interesting,” O’Sullivan replied. “It only lasted a few seconds, but it was definitely weird,” says Tisa Farrow….
Several times last summer, while Woody was visiting in Connecticut, Dylan locked herself in the bathroom, refusing to come out for hours. Once, one of the baby-sitters had to use a coat hanger to pick the lock. Dylan often complained of stomachaches and headaches when Woody visited: she would have to lie down. When he left, the symptoms would disappear. At times Dylan became so withdrawn when her father was around that she would not speak normally, but would pretend to be an animal.
On August 4, Woody was in Connecticut to visit the children, and Mia and Casey went shopping, taking along Mia’s two most recently adopted children—a blind Vietnamese girl named Tam, 11, and Isaiah, a seven-month-old black baby born to a crack-addicted mother. While they were gone, there was a brief period, perhaps 15 minutes, when Woody and Dylan vanished from sight. The baby-sitter who was inside searched high and low for them through the cluttered old farmhouse, but she couldn’t find them. The outside baby-sitter, after a look at the grounds around the house, concluded the two must be inside somewhere. When Mia got home a short time later, Dylan and Woody were outside, and Dylan didn’t have any underpants on. (Allen later said that he had not been alone with Dylan. He refused to submit hair and fingerprint samples to the Connecticut state police or to cooperate unless he was assured that nothing he said would be used against him.) Woody, who hated the country and reportedly brought his own bath mat to avoid germs, spent the night in a guest room off the laundry next to the garage and left the next morning.
That day, August 5, Casey called Mia to report something the baby-sitter had told her. The day before, Casey’s baby-sitter had been in the house looking for one of the three Pascal children and had been startled when she walked into the TV room. Dylan was on the sofa, wearing a dress, and Woody was kneeling on the floor holding her, with his face in her lap. The baby-sitter did not consider it “a fatherly pose,” but more like something you’d say “Oops, excuse me” to if both had been adults. She told police later that she was shocked. “It just seemed very intimate. He seemed very comfortable.”….
Soon-Yi and Lark were paid $70 by Woody to baby-sit on alternate weekends for Dylan and Satchel—an arrangement Soon-Yi and Woody’s side are now using as evidence of Mia’s making servants of the children. “I felt it was kind of tough on them,” says Sieger. “It was like a 24-hour deal, watching babies.” One summer Woody got Soon-Yi a part as an extra in Scenes from a Mall, the film he starred in with Bette Midler. Soon-Yi entertained thoughts of being a model and in her senior year Woody advised her on how to go about it. “Those last six months of high school, there was a definite change. I have no idea when her relationship started with him,” says Sieger. “He was helping her to show her how to dress and prepare herself to be a model, and he arranged for her to have professional pictures taken. When I saw the professional pictures, I was very surprised, because Soon-Yi looked so glamorous.”
The family soon sensed that Soon-Yi had a crush on Woody, which he seemed to delight in. But they thought nothing of it, since Soon-Yi had yet to receive her first phone call from a boy. Woody started taking her to basketball games, and Mia would reportedly tell her to stop dressing up for them as if she were going to a disco. The summer of ’91, Soon-Yi stayed in the city to work. She lived in Mia’s apartment with her big brother Matthew, whom she idolized, while Mia and the younger children were in the country. At night she would get all dressed up and go out, never telling Matthew or Priscilla where she was going.
“All of a sudden she started wearing these incredibly sexy clothes, and putting on these black, really slinky shirts and little skirts and these pumps and stuff,” says Gilman. “She would say, ‘Don’t tell Mom. I’m going to a friend’s house.’ And I said to Matthew, ‘I think she has a secret boyfriend, and I think we should find out who this is.’ And Matthew said, ‘Oh, no, just let her do her own thing.’ Matthew is very into respecting people’s privacy, and I said, ‘No, Matthew, as a good brother you should find out who this is. This is rather odd that she’s slinking around like this.” And he said, ‘No, no, no.’?” Soon-Yi’s other brothers and sisters also noticed things. Once, Moses told a family member he had seen Woody looking up Soon-Yi’s skirt right in the apartment, and Daisy was surprised to find him another time touching Soon-Yi’s hips, but the two kids didn’t dwell on these things…..

I remember what I was wearing and what I wasn’t wearing.” She tells Orth, “The things making me uncomfortable were making me think I was a bad kid, because I didn’t want to do what my elder told me to do.” The attic, she says, pushed her over the edge. “I was cracking. I had to say something. I was seven. I was doing it because I was scared. I wanted it to stop.” For all she knew, she tells Orth, “this was how fathers treated their daughters. This was normal interaction, and I was not normal for feeling uncomfortable about it.” Woody Allen’s lawyer Elkan Abramowitz says that Allen still denies the allegations of sexual abuse.
….Orth details the complex, intense, and ugly legal battle that followed, with the court proceedings and hearings dragging on for more than four years. Although Allen spent millions of dollars on legal fees, he lost two custody trials and two appeals. He also hired private investigators. Speaking anonymously, a top Connecticut State Police investigator on the sexual-abuse case says, “They were trying to dig up dirt on the troopers—whether they were having affairs, what they were doing.” The file for Dylan’s case in New York City’s Child Welfare Administration is nowhere to be found, someone close to the matter tells Orth, although it would ordinarily have been marked “indicated” to signify that it merited further attention—a potential red flag in allowing someone to adopt children….

….While the allegations regarding Allen first surfaced in the early ’90s, the controversy re-erupted earlier this year when Dylan Farrow, the adult daughter of Allen and actress Mia Farrow, wrote an open letter that was published in the New York Times on Feb. 1 alleging Allen abused her when she was 7 years old. Allen fired back in an open letter of his own this past weekend, claiming memories of abuse were implanted in Dylan after his relationship with Mia Farrow soured.
Regardless of whom people believe in this case, Kathleen Russell, of the Center for Judicial Excellence, said people all should be paying attention to the issue of child sexual abuse.
“What Dylan is experiencing right now from her adoptive father is exactly what millions of people in America, children who are child sex abuse survivors, have to deal with. And they obviously don’t have the celebrity that gets the kind of attention that this situation has gotten,” said Russell.
Joyanna Silberg, a psychologist at Sheppard Pratt Health System, said many studies suggest that one in four girls and one in six boys have experienced some form of sexual abuse….

Many people believe that if someone is guilty of abuse, he would be in jail. After reviewing numerous studies, Bolen (2001) found that offenders may be convicted in only 1-2% of cases of suspected abuse known to professionals. Many people believe that accusations of abuse during divorce are just a strategy to win custody. In fact, divorce is a logical consequence of finding out a partner is abusive and abuse claims during custody disputes are just as likely to be valid as those made at any other time….
Another important myth is the belief that a person who both appears and acts normal could not be a child molester….In truth, most perpetrators are otherwise normal appearing and acting members of society. Woody Allen’s public presentation, the way he looks and his level of success in his field should not lead people to make assumptions about his private conduct. Canoff rebutts an article in The Daily Beast that took Allen’s side and the arguments favoring Allen.

Juneau, Alaska (CNN) — “Alaska has an epidemic,” Gov. Sean Parnell told me. It’s not bear attacks or deadly roads. It’s rape and violence against women. Reported rape is more common in Alaska than any other state, according to 2012 FBI crime estimates. The per capita rate is about three times the national average. In America’s “Last Frontier” state, nearly 80 incidences of rape are reported per 100,000 people, the data show. Nationally, the rate is 27 per 100,000….
The FBI cautions against comparing crime rates across states without considering factors like demographics, climate, culture, economics and law enforcement capabilities. And rape is notoriously underreported nationwide, so take these numbers as estimates. Dismissal of Yeshiva University sex abuse lawsuit makes strong case for Assemblywoman Margaret Markey’s Child Victims Act BY Michael O’Keeffe   February 13, 2014
When U.S. District Court Judge John Koeltl dismissed the $680 million sexual abuse lawsuit filed by 34 former Yeshiva University prep school students two weeks ago because the alleged assaults took place after the statute of limitations expired, he inadvertently made a strong case for Assemblywoman Margaret Markey’s Child Victims Act.
Koeltl, displaying an astonishing lack of awareness about issues facing sexual abuse victims, claimed the plaintiffs should have brought their claims before they turned 21 years old. But mental health experts say – and sex abuse scandals involving football coaches at Poly Prep, Penn State and other institutions prove – that most victims are prepared to address the damage they have suffered until they are in their 40s.
Markey’s office sent us a press release earlier this month about her bill, which would eliminate the criminal and civil statute of limitations on child sexual abuse….

The traumagenic neurodevelopmental model of psychosis revisited. Neuropsychiatry, 4(1), 65-79 (2014).  Read J, Fosse R, Moskowitz A, Perry B.  Evidence that childhood adversities are risk factors for psychosis has accumulated rapidly. Research into the mechanisms underlying these relationships has focused, productively, on psychological processes, including cognition, attachment and dissociation. In 2001, the traumagenic neurodevelopmental model sought to integrate biological and psychological research by highlighting the similarities between the structural and functional abnormalities in the brains of abused children and adults diagnosed with ‘schizophrenia’. No review of relevant literature has subsequently been published. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to summarize the literature on biological mechanisms underlying the relationship between childhood trauma and psychosis published since 2001. A comprehensive search for relevant papers was undertaken via Medline, PubMed and psycINFO. In total, 125 papers were identified, with a range of methodologies, and provided both indirect support for and direct confirmation of the traumagenic neurodevelopmental model. Integrating our growing understanding of the biological sequelae of early adversity with our knowledge of the psychological processes linking early adversity to psychosis is valuable both theoretically and clinically.

Multiple studies and reviews have found a causal relationship between childhood trauma/adversity and psychosis. The 2001 traumagenic neurodevelopmental model of psychosis identified similarities in the brains of traumatized children and adults diagnosed with schizophrenia. Subsequently, 125 publications have provided indirect support for, or direct confirmation of, the traumagenic neurodevelopmental model.     Many studies have now demonstrated the relationship between psychosis and over-reactivity to stress of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and the dopaminergic system.     Studies of the frontal lobes and hippocampus also support the traumagenic neurodevelopmental model.     Two lines of evidence link prior stress and brain alterations to cognitive deficits in individuals diagnosed with psychotic disorders. Dissociative disorders are one of the psychiatric consequences of childhood psychological trauma. While oppression is an aspect of traumatic conditions, dissociation undermines resistance to oppression throughout a person’s lifespan. Neither oppression nor dissociation are restricted to particular cultures, and both can affect the individual as well as societies.
This collection engages with the universality of dissociative disorders and their close relationship to oppression. The chapters cover extreme examples such as ongoing incest in adulthood, children and adults forced to kill others, and abusive states in interrogation. Further subjects examined include the utilization of dissociation in postmodern societies to maintain oppression, the oppressive conditions of asylum seekers and the consequences of oppression as they are dealt with in psychotherapy. Early brain development susceptible to neglect, abuse  Emotional, physical trauma in childhood can cause delays in brain maturation, say experts  By Tracy Sherlock, Vancouver Sun February 25, 2014 The human brain is not fully developed until about age 25. Before that, young people can be impulsive, make poor decisions, and are often more susceptible to addictions.
Psychiatrists have a phrase for this stage of reasoning: “Hyperrational thinking.”
It is a tendency to focus on the upside of situations and ignore risks, says Daniel J. Siegel, a psychiatry professor at the University of California, Los Angeles school of medicine….
When a young person has been neglected, abused, or has no secure attachments, brain development may be compromised, Siegel said. Children in government care have often been neglected or abused, making them more vulnerable to developmental delays and mental health problems….
“Young people who have experienced early emotional or physical trauma may suffer from delays in brain maturation, leaving them ‘behind’ in brain development during adolescence,” states a report called The Adolescent Brain by the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative, an American foundation that works to help former foster kids transition to independence. “When stressful events or traumatic experiences occur, children, youth, and adults may temporarily regress to an earlier developmental stage or accomplishment.”
The experts agree that stress during childhood not only physically compromises brain development, it also has far-reaching effects on mental health that can be compounded by things like poverty or living in a chaotic home. Put together, adverse childhood experiences like neglect and abuse, have long-term effects that spill over into physical health….
