APNewsBreak: Cosby said he got drugs to give women for sex By MARYCLAIRE DALE Jul. 6, 2015
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bill Cosby testified in 2005 that he got Quaaludes with the intent of giving them to young women he wanted to have sex with, and he admitted giving the sedative to at least one woman and “other people,” according to documents obtained Monday by The Associated Press.
The AP had gone to court to compel the release of the documents; Cosby’s lawyers had objected on the grounds that it would embarrass their client.
The 77-year-old comedian was testifying under oath in a lawsuit filed by a former Temple University employee. He testified he gave her three half-pills of Benadryl.
Cosby settled that sexual-abuse lawsuit for undisclosed terms in 2006. His lawyers in the Philadelphia case did not immediately return phone calls Monday.
Cosby has been accused by more than two dozen women of sexual misconduct, including allegations by many that he drugged and raped them in incidents dating back more than four decades. Cosby, 77, has never been criminally charged, and most of the accusations are barred by statutes of limitations….

Walt Disney World removes Bill Cosby bust from Hollywood Studios Nick Vadala, Philly.com Wednesday, July 8, 2015 Walt Disney World has reportedly removed a statue depicting Bill Cosby from its Hollywood Studios theme park in Orlando, Fla. after closing time on Tuesday. The bronze bust’s removal comes just one day after the unsealing of court documents from a 2005 deposition wherein the embattled Cosby admitted to obtaining Quaaludes to give to a woman “he wanted to have sex with.”….

Cosby accuser asks judge to void confidentiality deal Jeremy Roebuck, Inquirer Staff Writer
Wednesday, July 8, 2015 Andrea Constand, the former Temple University employee who lodged sexual-assault allegations against Bill Cosby in a 2005 lawsuit, now says she wants to publicly tell her story. In court filings Wednesday, Constand asked a federal judge in Philadelphia to void a confidentiality agreement in her settlement deal with the actor-comedian, saying he and his representatives had repeatedly violated its terms and had left her little recourse but to respond.
She also asked for the release of a full transcript of a deposition Cosby gave in the case.
Excerpts of that deposition – unsealed this week – have reignited more recent controversy tied to allegations from more than two dozen other women who have also accused Cosby, 77, of sexual misconduct….
Cosby’s lawyer, Patrick O’Connor, has argued in recent court filings that those portions of the transcript do not provide a full picture of Cosby’s testimony….
Before settling her suit in 2006, Constand had lined up as potential witnesses 13 women willing to testify that Cosby had drugged and assaulted them.
The confidentiality agreement in Constand’s case bars her and Cosby from discussing the women’s allegations publicly….

Two of Bill Cosby’s accusers join push to have entire deposition unsealed
Beth Ferrier and Rebecca Lynn Neal, ‘Jane Does’ in the 2005 case, join motion as Neal also spoke out against National Enquirer for pulling an interview with her
Nicky Woolf Monday 13 July 2015 Two more of Bill Cosby’s accusers have joined a motion to have the whole of a deposition unsealed from a 2005 case in which the former comedian testified to having given a woman the sedative quaaludes before having sex with her.
One of them has also attacked the National Enquirer for allegedly suppressing a 2005 interview with her in exchange for an exclusive from Cosby about his daughter’s drug use.
Beth Ferrier and Rebecca Lynn Neal were unidentified witnesses – known as “Jane Does” – in a 2005 case in which Cosby was sued by Andrea Constand, the first of more than two dozen women to come forward with allegations of sexual abuse against the comedian.
Last week a judge granted a motion by the Associated Press to unseal part of Cosby’s deposition. Constand has now been joined by Ferrier and Neal in a motion to have the rest of the deposition, which has so far been barred from public view, unsealed.
In a statement Gloria Allred, the lawyer representing both Ferrier and Neal, said she was concerned the partial testimony, “if believed”, would cause reputational damage to her clients.
….“The National Enquirer, more than any other publication, was unflinching in our aggressive coverage of allegations against Mr Cosby beginning in 2000 when everyone else avoided the story,” a spokesman told the Wrap. “We continue to remain aggressive in our reporting today and stand by the integrity of our coverage of this story which we have taken the lead on for more than a decade.”

Smithsonian To Post Sign At Exhibition Featuring Bill Cosby-Owned Art July 14, 2015 Krishnadev Calamur The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art in Washington will post a sign Wednesday telling visitors an exhibition that includes art owned by Bill Cosby and his wife, Camille, is “fundamentally about the artworks and the artists who created them, not Mr. Cosby,” representatives for the Smithsonian Institution say.
The sign, which will be posted at 10 a.m., comes amid allegations of sexual misconduct directed against Cosby by more than two dozen women. Some of them say he drugged and raped them. Cosby has not been charged in any of the alleged assaults.
Last week it emerged that the comedian testified in 2005 he obtained the sedative Quaalude with the intent of giving the drug to women with whom he wanted to have sex, and he acknowledged giving it to at least one woman. The Los Angeles Police Department says it is conducting at least one current criminal investigation into allegations of sexual assault against Cosby….

Will Bill Cosby ever face prosecution over allegations of sexual misdeeds? By Paul Farhi July 20, 2015 There is little question that Bill Cosby’s revered reputation is in tatters. But will he ever be called to account for conduct that has led to multiple lawsuits and accusations of sexual misconduct from more than 40 women?
The one assault allegation against Cosby to progress through the legal system — a 2005 civil suit brought by a Temple University employee named Andrea Constand — was settled without any admission by Cosby. But Constand’s complaint set in motion events that could raise new legal troubles for Cosby and that have the potential to be powerful pieces of evidence against him in potential civil or criminal cases, plaintiffs attorneys and others say. The most problematic are Cosby’s own account contained in court records and his deposition in the Constand case.
The records, which have been unsealed or disclosed in the past two weeks, contain Cosby’s admission that he gave drugs to women he sought to have sex with, including Constand and some of the long line of women who have accused him of drugging and assaulting women since the late 1960s (Cosby has denied any criminal intent)….
Cosby, however, may still face criminal charges. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a sexual-battery complaint filed by Chloe Goins,a model who says Cosby spiked her drink during a party at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles in 2008 and then removed her clothes and masturbated in her presence after she passed out, according to Goins’s attorney, Spencer Kuvin.
The statute of limitations on the allegation won’t run out until next April, Kuvin said. He said the LAPD has questioned Goins twice since she came forward in December. If officials decline to pursue a criminal case, he said, he is prepared to file a civil suit on Goins’s behalf.
The LAPD has confirmed an ongoing investigation of Cosby’s behavior but has not identified the alleged victim. Gloria Allred, an attorney who represents 17 Cosby accusers, said one of her clients, Judy Huth, also has spoken to detectives….

Bill Cosby seeks court sanctions against accuser over deposition leak Reuters By Steve Gorman July 21, 2015 Comedian Bill Cosby filed legal papers on Tuesday calling for court sanctions against a woman accusing him of sexual assault, saying she breached their confidentiality agreement in the leak of his full deposition from a 10-year-old civil case to the New York Times.
Cosby, 78, made the filing in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia in opposition to recent motions by Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee who has alleged the comedian tricked her into taking drugs before he sexually assaulted her.
The lawsuit she brought against Cosby was settled for an undisclosed sum in 2006, and all documents from the litigation were sealed until a federal judge on July 6 released limited redacted excerpts from Cosby’s 2005 deposition testimony in the case.
Those excerpts included Cosby’s admission under oath that he had obtained Quaaludes, the brand name for a sedative widely abused as a recreational drug in the 1970s, with the intent of giving the pills to young women in order to have sex with them.
On July 8, Constand filed papers in court seeking to unseal the entire deposition and her settlement agreement with Cosby, as well as to free her from any confidentiality restrictions.
The New York Times has since obtained its own record of Cosby’s deposition and posted additional excerpts on its website, revealing testimony in which the entertainer described how he had pursued women and how he obtained Quaaludes.
Cosby’s own court filing on Tuesday stressed that the deposition excerpts so far unsealed by the judge contain no testimony that he engaged in any non-consensual sex or gave anyone Quaaludes without their knowledge or consent….

Why the New Case Against Bill Cosby Is Different Eliza Gray July 23, 2015
He may be forced to testify about the molestation of a 15-year-old girl
After facing years of sexual abuse accusations from dozens of women, comedian Bill Cosby may be forced to give a deposition under oath next month in a case that will put him under unprecedented scrutiny, in which he is alleged to have molested a 15-year-old girl.
Cosby’s lawyer tried to get the case dismissed on procedural grounds, but on Wednesday the California Supreme Court declined to hear the petition, paving the way for the case to go forward, if Cosby’s lawyers aren’t able to stop it.
Gloria Allred, the attorney representing the alleged molestation victim, who is now in her 50s, told TIME her team plans to ask Cosby not just about the specifics of the case but also about the similar claims made by dozens of other women, who have detailed encounters in which Cosby plied them with drugs or alcohol and then assaulted them. She hopes to depose Cosby in August and will seek permission to videotape the proceeding.
“We have wide latitude in the deposition to ask any question of Mr. Cosby that is relevant or will lead to discovery,” Allred told TIME. “I believe it is relevant to inquire about accusations of other accusers, in order to establish pattern and practice, as well as a motive.” Cosby’s representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
The details of the case
Judy Huth was 15 when she and a 16-year-old friend met Cosby in 1974 at a Los Angeles park where he was filming a movie, according to a December 2014 court filing. The girls both told Cosby how old they were, the filing says. Cosby invited Huth and her friend to his tennis club the following Saturday. They met him there and the trio played billiards. Cosby also gave them alcohol, playing a game with Huth that involved her drinking a beer every time he won a game of billiards. Afterwards, he took the girls to the Playboy Mansion, where Huth said he invited her to sit beside him in a bedroom suite and molested her, according to the filing…. http://time.com/3970055/bill-cosby-judy-huth-deposition/

Bill Cosby: 35 Women Accuse the Actor of Assault on New York Magazine Cover Jul 27, 2015 By LESLEY MESSER via Good Morning America Dozens of women have publicly accused Bill Cosby of assault since late last year. In its new issue, New York magazine photographed 35 of them for a stunning cover story. “The minute you see something from a bird’s eye view, you start to understand the scope,” explained the magazine’s director of photography, Jody Quon. “Once we organized it and put the women in chronological order based on the year of their alleged assaults, you started to see the only thing they had in common was Bill Cosby, and that’s when we thought, ‘This could be a really powerful photo essay.'”….
Through his attorneys, Cosby, 78, has denied the allegations of sexual assault and rape and has never been charged with a crime. Martin Singer, one of Bill Cosby’s attorneys, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from ABC News regarding the magazine cover.
Many of the women in the New York magazine portfolio, including model Beverly Johnson, have said over the past few months that they were drugged by the comedian in decades past. Others, including model Janice Dickinson, also alleged rape….

‘I’m No Longer Afraid’: 35 Women Tell Their Stories About Being Assaulted by Bill Cosby, and the Culture That Wouldn’t Listen By Noreen Malone and Portfolio By Amanda Demme July 26, 2015
More has changed in the past few years for women who allege rape than in all the decades since the women’s movement began. Consider the evidence of October 2014, when an audience member at a Hannibal Buress show in Philadelphia uploaded a clip of the comedian talking about Bill Cosby: “He gets on TV, ‘Pull your pants up, black people … I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom.’ Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches … I guess I want to just at least make it weird for you to watch Cosby Show reruns. Dude’s image, for the most part, it’s fucking public Teflon image. I’ve done this bit onstage and people think I’m making it up … That shit is upsetting.” The bit went viral swiftly, with irreversible, calamitous consequences for Cosby’s reputation.
Perhaps the most shocking thing wasn’t that Buress had called Cosby a rapist; it was that the world had actually heard him. A decade earlier, 14 women had accused Cosby of rape. In 2005, a former basketball star named Andrea Constand, who met Cosby when she was working in the athletic department at Temple University, where he served on the board of trustees, alleged to authorities that he had drugged her to a state of semi-consciousness and then groped and digitally penetrated her. After her allegations were made public, a California lawyer named Tamara Green appeared on the Today show and said that, 30 years earlier, Cosby had drugged and assaulted her as well. Eventually, 12 Jane Does signed up to tell their own stories of being assaulted by Cosby in support of Constand’s case. Several of them eventually made their names public. But they were met, mostly, with skepticism, threats, and attacks on their character….
As Cosby allegedly told some of his victims: No one would believe you. So why speak up? But among younger women, and particularly online, there is a strong sense now that speaking up is the only thing to do, that a woman claiming her own victimhood is more powerful than any other weapon in the fight against rape…. http://nymag.com/thecut/2015/07/bill-cosbys-accusers-speak-out.html
Bill Cosby to Be Deposed by Sept. 30 in Molestation Lawsuit: ‘We Are Looking Forward to That Day,’ Says Accuser’s Lawyer By Tara Fowler 07/29/2015 Bill Cosby will be deposed in the next two months in a molestation lawsuit, according to attorney Gloria Allred.
Allred, who represents Judy Huth and 16 other Cosby accusers, said Tuesday that a California judge has ordered the comedian to give a deposition in the civil suit filed by her client, according to a statement obtained by PEOPLE. That deposition, she said, is scheduled to come no later than Sept. 30….
Huth has claimed that Cosby, 78, molested her inside the Playboy Mansion when she was just 15 years old. She is just one of the nearly 50 women who’ve accused Cosby of some form of sexual abuse.
While the statute of limitations has expired for a criminal case, California law allows allegations of underage sexual abuse to come to court as a civil lawsuit even decades after the alleged incident happened. Cosby and his lawyers have continually denied the allegations against him….

LAPD’s Bill Cosby investigation could help establish pattern of abuse By Richard Winton
Of the many misconduct allegations made by women against Bill Cosby in Los Angeles over the decades, L.A. police are actively investigating just one.
It involves claims by a woman who says Cosby assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in 2008, when she was 18.
She alleges Cosby gave her a drink that caused her to black out. When she awoke, she said, she found herself naked on a bed in the mansion with Cosby biting her toes with his pants around his ankles, according to her attorney. Cosby’s attorneys have denied the accusations.
In January, Chloe Goins, 24, was interviewed for 2 1/2 half hours by an LAPD detective. Officials say they are continuing to investigate, and prosecutors say detectives have not presented them with a case.
Earlier this year, the L.A. district attorney rejected another Cosby case presented by the LAPD because it happened decades ago. Goins’ case is more recent but also faces challenges.
Under California law, the legal deadline for prosecuting most rape cases involving an adult victim is 10 years….

Three More Women Come Forward to Accuse Bill Cosby of Sexual Assault
By Christine Pelisek 08/12/2015
Three more women have publicly come forward with accusations that Bill Cosby sexually assaulted them in the 1970s and ’80s. The three women, including an actress who appeared on The Cosby Show and the former wife of a vice president at the William Morris Agency, joined the more than 40 women who allege they were drugged, sexually assaulted or sexually harassed by the comedian.
At a press conference Wednesday, civil rights attorney Gloria Allred, who is now representing more than 21 accusers, said the three women are speaking out now to show their support for other accusers who have been criticized by Cosby’s attorneys.
“There is no statute of limitations on free speech,” says Allred. “A person who alleges that she or he is a victim can speak out at any time.”
Cosby has consistently denied the allegations of sexual assault….

Barbara Kay: To understand Bill Cosby, start with Alfred C. Kinsey Barbara Kay July 29, 2015
….But the most sophisticated strategy was the “Kinsey approach.” Hefner was a huge fan of Alfred C. Kinsey, an Indiana University zoologist, whose 1948 report, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, was the Sexual Revolution’s Ur-text (a “Human Female” volume came out in 1953). Hefner boasted of being “Kinsey’s pamphleteer,” proud to bruit the often-cited Kinsey mantra: “fornicate early, fornicate often, fornicate in every possible way” (including bestiality, which Kinsey described in more tender language than he applied to human sex).
….Young Lotharios may have gotten lucky with this ploy, but they were pushing what later researchers proved was bad science. Kinsey’s “research” claimed such suspiciously high ratios of extramarital sex, abortions, homosexuality, bisexuality, bestiality and incest in the general population as to suggest that the only abnormal or deviant sexual condition was abstinence. According to W. Allen Wallis, past president of the American Statistical Association: “They were touting [Kinsey’s book] everywhere even though the statistics were appalling.”
Kinsey’s team, some of whom later lent their names to pedophilia advocacy, claimed that sexuality begins at birth, concluding it was normal for children to engage in peer and inter-generational sex. In the history of social science, no other academic researcher of early child development (Piaget, Maslow et. al) has publicly asserted that sexual intercourse, including incest, has no harmful effect on children. How did Kinsey arrive at this erroneous conclusion? Unethically.
For example (see Tables 30-33 of his Male volume), Kinsey reports that in sex-play experiments of male children from infancy to mid-teens, most arrived at orgasm, the youngest boy observed to climax being “two months.” A four-year old was reported to have had 26 climaxes in 24 hours. How did this non-consensual experimentation take place at all? This is not science. This is child abuse.
Kinsey’s claims were also based on feedback he solicited from convicted pedophiles. Rapists told Kinsey that their child victims enjoyed the sex (a common delusion amongst pedophiles), which he reported as fact. He protected one rapist actively being sought by the police, and accorded legitimacy to the views of another, on record for raping 800 children, the youngest two months of age. Not exactly a “community” sampling….

Two New Women Accuse Bill Cosby of Sexual Assault By Alexandra Hurtado 08/20/2015
The list of women accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assault grew Thursday, with two new women publicly coming forward in New York City with their stories.
The two accusers join a group of more than 40 women who allege they were drugged and sexually assaulted by the comedian.
Charlotte Fox and “Elizabeth” – who asked that her real name not be used – detailed their allegations against the 78-year-old comedian in a press conference held by civil rights attorney Gloria Allred, who is representing the alleged victims. The women were also joined in support by another alleged Cosby victim, Sarita Butterfield, who came forward with her story last November….
Cosby is scheduled to give his testimony on Oct. 9, after a California judge ordered the actor to give a deposition in the civil suit filed by Allred’s client Judy Huth – who claims the comedian molested her at the Playboy Mansion when she was 15 years old…. http://www.people.com/article/bill-cosby-two-new-accusers-sexual-assault-claims

Leon Brittan

Child sex abuse inquiry: Leon Brittan among leading Westminster figures named in documents 22 July 2015 By Jack Blanchard THE former Tory Home Secretary’s name is on government file along with other powerful Westminster officials from the 1970s and 80s including Sir Peter Morrison.
LEADING Westminster figures from the 1970s and 80s including the late Leon Brittan have been named in Government child abuse documents, it was reported last night.
Sky News said that after months of requests Whitehall has finally revealed that papers do exist relating to Margaret Thatcher’s former parliamentary secretary the late Sir Peter Morrison, former Home Secretary Sir Leon, former diplomat the late Sir Peter Hayman and former minister the late Sir William van Straubenzee.
It came after the Government released the details in January of a file prepared for Mrs Thatcher’s office on the ‘unnatural sexual’ behaviour of one of the men Sir Peter Hayman.
The new batch of file names reveal there were further Government papers relating to the former MI6 man and career diplomat.
The content of the papers have not been revealed, however.
Sky News said the documents have been shared with the police and will be passed to the Child Abuse Inquiry led by Justice Lowell Goddard….

Jehovah’s Witnesses

Is religion doing enough to root out abuse? Caroline Wyatt Religious affairs correspondent 22 July 2015 Karen Morgan said the church offered no help when she reported the abuse
From when Karen Morgan was 12, until she was well into her teens, she was sexually abused by her uncle – a ministerial servant with the Jehovah’s Witnesses….
But what is striking about the Jehovah’s Witnesses is their explicit policy of dealing with abuse in-house.
Because of their practice of following the Bible literally, they insist there must be two witnesses to a crime, often not the case in child abuse cases.
However, in Karen’s case a second witness did come forward: Wendy, a family friend and fellow member of the Barry congregation in south Wales. She had been raped by the same man.
When she reported the crime to elders, Wendy was made to describe it in minute detail to a group of older men.
Later, she had to give her account again in the same room as Sewell….
Afterwards, the elders told her that as it was only her account against that of Sewell, nothing more could be done.
This bringing together of the accused and the accuser in a “judicial committee” is a common feature of Jehovah’s Witnesses’ justice.
Karen, still a teenager at the time, was put through the process.
Reluctance to co-operate
The elders also ruled that their separate accusations didn’t constitute the required two witnesses. Despite a pattern of predatory sexual behaviour, it took more than two decades to bring Wendy and Karen’s abuser to justice. He is now serving a 14-year prison sentence. His punishment from the Jehovah’s Witnesses? There wasn’t one. Even when the case came to court, the organisation was reluctant to co-operate….
In a programme for Radio 4’s The Report, we have identified this lack of co-operation in several other similar cases. Confidential documents from the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of Britain – the official name for the Jehovah’s Witnesses – that we have seen are explicit about the best way to deal with such matters being within the congregation…. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-33609927

Jehovah’s Witnesses failed to report 1,000 alleged perpetrators, child sex abuse royal commission hears By Nicole Chettle July 27, 2015
More than 1,000 members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses have been identified by the church as perpetrators of child sexual abuse since 1950 but not one was reported to police, an inquiry has heard.
The Sydney hearing was told the church adopted a scriptural response to abuse, which it abhorred, and had files relating to 1,006 alleged perpetrators, dating back to 1950.
The process required witnesses to prove abuse took place, and no allegations were ever reported to police.
A 47-year-old woman, known to the inquiry as BCB, said she was sexually assaulted as a teenager by her family friend and church elder, Bill Neill, at Narrogin, south-east of Perth in the 1980s.
The commission heard Neill is now deceased.
BCB described feeling ashamed to give evidence because she still identifies as a Jehovah’s Witness despite suffering a nervous breakdown and depression as a result of the abuse.
“I would like the Jehovah’s Witnesses to take allegations of child abuse more seriously and report them to the police,” she said.
“I also think that those victims that are brave enough to report to elders should be properly supported and protected.
“I found the experience of reporting my abuse to a room full of men, including the man who had abused me, very distressing.”….
Elder admits destroying notes from meeting
A Jehovah’s Witness elder, Max Horley, said he destroyed notes from a meeting about the assault of BCB….
Church practice not to report sexual abuse
Justice McLellan then asked him if he was aware of his obligation to tell the authorities if a serious allegation of sexual assault was reported to him.
“If we have any hesitation we contact the branch for advice on how we should proceed legally and scripturally,” Mr Horley said.
“We don’t report it to the police. I think we encourage them to do that. But we give them the assistance to do that.”….

Authorities: Congregation elders didn’t report child abuse By Randall Chase AP August 5, 2015
DOVER, Del. — The Delaware attorney general’s office is suing a Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation in Sussex County, claiming that elders failed to report an unlawful sexual relationship between a woman and a 14-year-old boy, both of whom were congregation members.
After speaking with attorneys this week, a New Castle County Superior Court judge scheduled oral arguments in the civil action against the Laurel congregation for Nov. 9.
Under Delaware law, any person, agency, organization or entity who knows or in good faith suspects that a child is being abused or neglected must call a 24-hour hotline to report it. The law specifically states that the reporting requirements apply to health care workers and organizations, school employees, social workers, psychologists and law enforcement officials.
But a lawyer for the congregation is arguing that the elders of the Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation are protected from the reporting requirements by clergy privilege, similar to the confidentiality of a church confessional.
“It’s a First Amendment issue,” defense attorney James Liguori said.
Department of Justice authorities say the boy reported to his mother in January 2013 that he and Katheryn Harris Carmean White, who worked as a teacher’s aide at Seaford Middle School, had engaged in a sexual relationship. According to the complaint, the boy and his mother met that same day with congregation elders Joel Mulchansingh and William Perkins.
The two elders met a few days later with Carmean White, who confirmed the ongoing sexual relationship, according to the complaint.
“At no time … did defendant elder Mulchansingh and defendant elder Perkins contact the 24 hour child abuse report line to report the alleged incident of child sexual abuse,” Delaware Deputy Attorney General Janice Tigani wrote….

Milwaukee archdiocese settles with clergy abuse survivors for $21 million Aug. 4, 2015 By SCOTT BAUER, Associated Press MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee said Tuesday that it will pay $21 million to more than 300 victims of clergy abuse in a settlement that would end a four-year bankruptcy proceeding.
The proposed deal, which will be part of a reorganization plan submitted to a bankruptcy court later this month, was to be reviewed by a judge overseeing the case at a Nov. 9 hearing. Archbishop Jerome Listecki called the settlement a “new Pentecost,” but an attorney for the victims, along with advocates for those abused by clergy, decried the settlement as a paltry amount.
Milwaukee is one of 12 Roman Catholic dioceses nationwide to file for bankruptcy in the past decade over a flood of abuse claims. The settlement announced Tuesday is among the smallest per-victim payments yet in these cases. The actual amount each victim receives will be determined by an appointee of the bankruptcy court….

Catholic church in Scotland asks forgiveness from child abuse victims Archbishop Philip Tartaglia pledges to make reparations and change practices after independent report accuses bishops of covering up crimes for decades Severin Carrell Scotland editor Tuesday 18 August 2015
The Scottish Catholic church has offered a “profound apology” to victims of child abuse and the church’s failure to investigate and punish the culprits, after a damning independent report into its conduct.
Archbishop Philip Tartaglia, the official head of the Scottish church, told a congregation in Glasgow on Tuesday that their bishops were “shamed and pained” by the abuse suffered by children and adults over recent decades. “We say sorry. We ask forgiveness.”
After pledging to act on an independent inquiry commissioned by the church, which accused its bishops of covering up the crimes for decades, Tartaglia said: “Child abuse is a horrific crime. That this abuse should have been carried out within the church, and by priests and religious [orders], takes that abuse to another level….
The McLellan inquiry was set up by Scotland’s bishops in November 2013 after a string of highly damaging historical abuse scandals came to light, including repeated child abuse by paedophile priests, which was often covered up or ignored, systematic abuse by staff at Fort Augustus Catholic boarding school, and the admissions of sexual misconduct against adult priests by Cardinal Keith O’Brien, then the UK’s most senior Catholic.
The church’s own investigations in 2013 disclosed that there were also 46 live allegations of abuse against priests made between 2006 and 2012, leading to seven prosecutions.
In 2013, there were another 15 allegations made, six of which were historical. Three priests were removed from roles involving the public, and two cases are with Scottish prosecutors, with prosecutors also studying allegations of abuse by nine men at Fort Augustus between 1967 and 1992….

Vatican delays trial of pope’s ex-diplomat accused of child porn, pedophilia By Faith Karimi, Delia Gallagher and Hada Messia, CNN Sat July 11, 2015 CNN)A former papal ambassador accused of sexually abusing minors has been hospitalized in an intensive care unit — pushing back his trial once set to start Saturday in Vatican City.
Jozef Wesolowski, 66, was under house arrest in Vatican City when he fell ill Friday night and was rushed to a public hospital.
A judge held a short hearing and adjourned Wesolowski’s trial to a yet undetermined date, the Vatican Press Office said. It did not provide any details on his condition.
Wesolowski, 66, is the highest-ranking Catholic official arrested for alleged sexual abuse of minors.
In addition to sexual abuse allegations, he is accused of possession of child pornography during his time as papal nuncio — or ambassador — to the Dominican Republic. The maximum punishment for these crimes could be 9 years in prison, although sentencing is entirely at the discretion of the judges.
The Vatican, which operates as a city-state, has its own judicial system. This is the first trial on charges of sex abuse to be heard by the Vatican tribunal, which is composed of 3 lay Italian judges….
Before arriving in the Dominican Republic seven years ago, Wesolowski was nuncio to Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
He began his career as a priest in Poland in 1972, and became a bishop in 2000….

Former Archbishop Dies Ahead of Vatican Child Abuse Trial Jozef Wesolowski had been the most senior Vatican official arrested on allegations of child sex abuse By Liam Moloney Aug. 28, 2015
VATICAN CITY—The former papal nuncio to the Dominican Republic, who was under house arrest on charges of child abuse and possession of child pornography, died early Friday, according to the Vatican. The Vatican said in a statement initial indications were that Jozef Wesolowski, the Polish born-priest who had been the most senior Vatican official arrested on allegations of child sex abuse so far, had died of natural causes….
Mr. Wesolowski, 67, was recalled as ambassador to the Caribbean country in 2013, after a five-year posting, in the wake of reports of sexual misconduct. He was defrocked as archbishop by a Vatican tribunal last year for sexual abuse of minors in the Dominican Republic. In June, after the pope gave his permission, a Vatican criminal court indicted him on charges of sexually abusing boys in the Dominican Republic and of possessing child pornography. He had been under house arrest inside the Vatican awaiting the start of his trial….

Inquiry into historic child abuse to focus on homes allegations 31/08/2015
Cardinal Sean Brady leaves after giving evidence to the Historical Institutional Abuse inquiry at Banbridge Courthouse, County Down A long-running public inquiry will examine allegations of historic child abuse at juvenile justice institutions when it resumes this week….
In June, the HIA, spent a week examining the failings that allowed notorious paedophile priest Fr Brendan Smyth to continue abusing children over four decades. Retired Catholic Primate Cardinal Sean Brady was among those who gave evidence and said he hoped light would be shed on a “dark chapter” in the church’s history. The inquiry was set up in January 2013 by the Northern Ireland Executive to investigate child abuse which occurred in residential institutions over a 73-year period from 1922 to 1995. A total of 16 child care facilities are under investigation and around 300 witnesses are expected to give evidence….

UN

UN official who failed to act on child sex abuse allegations resigns July 22, 2015 Associated Press UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. rights official who admitted not following up for months on allegations of child sexual abuse by French soldiers in Central African Republic has resigned.
The U.N. confirmed Wednesday that Flavia Pansieri has left the post of deputy high commissioner for human rights “for health reasons.” No more details were given.
The allegations by several children as young as 9 of trading oral sex and sodomy for food with French soldiers tasked with protecting civilians in the violence-torn country didn’t become public until late April, almost a year after U.N. staffers first heard the children’s stories. Pansieri’s comments and other leaked documents led the U.N. secretary-general this summer to order an investigation into how the U.N. handled the case.
In a confidential statement for a separate internal investigation, obtained by The Associated Press, Pansieri said she had been distracted from the case by other issues, including budget cuts for several months. “I regret to say that in the context of those very hectic days, I failed to follow up on the CAR situation,” Pansieri said in the statement dated March 26.
She said she and her boss, high commissioner Zeid Raad al-Hussein, had assumed French authorities were handling the allegations, even as France pressed the U.N. for months for more information….

The Duggars’ TLC reality show ’19 Kids and Counting’ is officially canceled By Abby Ohlheiser July 16, 2015
Nearly two months after a molestation scandal prompted TLC to pull reruns of the popular reality program “19 Kids and Counting” from the air and online, the network announced that it has officially canceled the program.
“After thoughtful consideration, TLC and the Duggar family have decided to not move forward with 19 Kids and Counting,” the network said. “The show will no longer appear on the air.”
The announcement ends weeks of speculation about the fate of the show after the Duggars’ oldest son, Josh, apologized in May for molesting multiple young girls, including some of his sisters, more than a decade ago, when he was a teenager. Duggar, 27, also resigned from his job at the Family Research Council’s lobbying arm in D.C….

BY Ethan Sacks NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Wednesday, July 1, 2015
“19 Kids and Counting” star Josh Duggar is facing a harsh new reality: one of his molestation victims is reportedly close to filing a civil lawsuit against him.
The prospective suit, first reported by In Touch Weekly, could lead to Duggar and his parents, Jim Bob, and Michelle, to give embarrassing information about the molestation scandal that has rocked the religious reality television clan.
“All the church elders who knew about this will have to be named,” a source told the gossip magazine.
News of a potential lawsuit comes a month after the eldest son of the Duggar clan was forced to admit he molested five girls — four of them his own sisters — as a teenager. The plaintiff is the fifth victim, who is not related to her abuser…..

TLC sets airdate for child sexual abuse documentary ‘Breaking the Silence’ ASSOCIATED PRESS Thursday, August 13, 2015 LOS ANGELES — TLC network has set an airdate for its new documentary to raise awareness about child sexual abuse. The film, “Breaking the Silence,” will air at 10 p.m. EDT Aug. 30, the network said Thursday.

Argentine Judges Allowed to Resign After Child Abuse Ruling By JONATHAN GILBERT JULY 4, 2015
BUENOS AIRES — Two Argentine judges whose controversial decision to reduce the sentence of a convicted child abuser provoked widespread anger here have had their resignations accepted, Argentina’s state news agency reported on Saturday. The judges, Horacio Piombo, 72, and Benjamín Sal Llargués, reduced the sentence because they claimed that the 6-year-old victim, a boy, had already displayed homosexual tendencies. They were allowed to step down by Daniel Scioli, the governor of Buenos Aires Province, according to Télam, the news agency.
The revelation of the judges’ ruling infuriated Argentines, especially gay and human rights groups. The federal government’s cabinet chief said it was “one of the greatest barbarities seen in our country.” The decision by Judges Piombo and Sal Llargués to halve the abuser’s sentence was taken last year in the province’s criminal appeals court, but it only came to light recently.
The sentence of Mario Tolosa, the vice president of a sports club who several years ago had raped the boy, a junior soccer player, was cut from six years to a little more than three. Local news reports said Mr. Tolosa had already been released from prison.
The judges based their ruling on what they said was the boy’s sexual disposition, suggesting that he had homosexual leanings….
The judges had previously faced controversy when they halved the sentence of another convicted child abuser, a pastor, in 2011, paving the way for his immediate release from prison.

Rotherham

Alexis Jay on child sex abuse: ‘Politicians wanted to keep a lid on it’
Her devastating Rotherham report blew open the national debate on child sex abuse. Now the ‘retired’ social worker is investigating historic claims on an unprecedented scale, taking on Westminster, the BBC and NHS Helen Pidd Monday 13 July 2015 Alexis Jay officially retired two years ago – not that you’d notice. In 2013 she stepped down from her role as Scotland’s chief social work adviser, shortly after being awarded an OBE. But rather than tending to her garden she ended up digging up horrific claims of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham. That job done, the scalps of many officials taken, she moved on to sort out Northern Ireland’s safeguarding children boards.
But last week the 66-year-old began her biggest task yet, when she joined the panel of what has been described as Britain’s most complicated and wide-reaching statutory inquiry ever. The independent inquiry into child sex abuse (IICSA) is expected to take five years investigating claims of abuse in faith and religious organisations, the criminal justice system, local authorities and national institutions such as the BBC, NHS and Ministry of Defence….
“By victims we are not talking about children who were at risk of sexual exploitation, who were friendly with victims or who moved in the same circle,” she told the journalists. “The 1,400 victims are those who had actually experienced sexual exploitation.” Determined that no one could bat away her findings, she had produced a 153-page report that spelled out in plain language the appalling abuse suffered by children aged 10-16 in the South Yorkshire town (Rotherham) between 1997 and 2013….

Rotherham child sex abuse: Most victims have not yet come forward for help, says lawyer The Jay Report estimated that more than 1,400 children were sexually exploited Dave Higgens Monday 24 August 2015 Only a small fraction of more than 1,400 victims who were sexually exploited as children in Rotherham over a 16-year period have come forward for help, according to a lawyer representing survivors. A year after the publication of the Jay Report, which produced the estimate that more than 1,400 children had been raped, trafficked, groomed and violently attacked in the South Yorkshire town, David Greenwood said that he believed fewer than 100 of the girls involved have engaged with the raft of new inquiries. Mr Greenwood, who represents 58 girls who were subjected to sexual abuse by gangs of men in Rotherham between 1996 and 2012, said the much-criticised police and council have made progress in the town in the past 12 months. But he believes many survivors will only trust the system again once a truly independent agency is brought in…. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/rotherham-child-sex-abuse-most-victims-have-not-yet-come-forward-for-help-says-lawyer-10468543.html

‘Horrifying’ and ‘deeply shocking’ report into child abuse Tuesday Aug 25, 2015 Patrice Dougan A panel tasked with examining historical abuse in New Zealand’s state institutions has heard a litany of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, describing it as “horrifying” and “deeply shocking”.
However, the Confidential Listening and Assistance Service said the “most shocking thing was that much of this was preventable”. “If people had been doing their jobs properly and if proper systems had been in place, much of this abuse could have been avoided with better oversight,” the panel said…. “Serious physical and sexual abuse came from a wide range of people and from both genders. Foster caregivers and extended families, social workers and staff, teachers, the clergy, cooks, gardeners, night watchmen; even other children and patients all took part in abuse.
“We heard of people using their fists and their feet, as well as weapons and other implements on occasion, to attack children. Many very severe beatings for no apparent reason were reported to us.”…. The report concluded: “It has become clear to us that the neglect and abuse of children and the previously frequent practice of locking children up in institutions has contributed to a dark legacy of suffering and crime in this country.”….

Meirion Jones: ‘Everyone on right side of the Savile argument has been forced out of the BBC’
Dominic Ponsford 29 July 2015 Three days after finishing work on Panorama documentary The Fake Sheikh Exposed, producer Meirion Jones was told his services were no longer required by the programme. His previous job as head of investigations at Newsnight had been filled in his absence. He was effectively out of a job. After 26 years at the BBC, Jones (pictured above, Reuters) felt like this career at the corporation had come to an end and he was being squeezed out. Jones believes he was punished because he tried to expose the Jimmy Savile scandal at the BBC and spoke out about the way his Newsnight investigation of December 2011 was suppressed. Liz MacKean, who worked on the Savile story with Jones, left after 23 years with the corporation in April last year. She also felt she no longer had a future with the BBC. Speaking out in detail for the first time since he left the BBC in February, Jones paints a picture of a corporation which appears to have failed to learn the lessons of the biggest scandal in its history. He believes those on the side of exposing the Savile scandal mistakes have been sidelined and encouraged to leave the corporation – while others involved in suppressing the Savile story have kept their jobs….
Press Gazette put Jones’ criticisms to the BBC. A spokesperson said: “Meirion Jones has made his views known before and we have always been clear that nobody was forced out of the BBC for exposing the Savile scandal…. http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/meirion-jones-speaks-out-everyone-who-was-right-side-savile-argument-has-been-forced-out-bbc

Edward Heath abuse claims: Five forces investigating ex-PM August 7, 2015
Edward Heath, who was prime minister from 1970 to 1974, died in 2005
Five police forces are investigating claims of historical child sexual abuse involving former PM Sir Edward Heath.
The Met, Wiltshire, Kent, Jersey and Hampshire forces are conducting separate inquiries into the late MP.
The BBC understands Wiltshire Police halted an inquiry into a brothel keeper in the 1990s after she said Sir Edward was involved in child sexual abuse.
The Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation said it was confident he would be cleared of any wrongdoing.
‘Case dropped’
On Tuesday night, Hampshire became the fifth force to say it was investigating “allegations”, but gave no further details.
The BBC’s home affairs correspondent Dominic Casciani says claims made by the brothel keeper, that Sir Edward was a client, meant that she had left herself open to prosecution.
However, the case against her was allegedly discontinued between 1990 and 1995….
Operation Midland: The BBC understands Sir Edward is being looked at as part of the operation examining claims that boys were abused by a group of powerful men at locations across southern England and in London in the 1970s and 1980s. It has focused on the Dolphin Square estate in Pimlico, south-west London.
Operation Whistle: The States of Jersey Police has confirmed Sir Edward forms part of its investigation into historical allegations of abuse. It says some of the allegations relate to abuse “within institutions or by people of public prominence”.
Operation Hydrant: A nationally co-ordinated exercise to collate all allegations of historical abuse involving high profile-figures. The operation has been notified of Sir Edward being named in connection with an allegation of sexual assault in the 1960s….

However, North Yorkshire Police said it had passed a “piece of intelligence” to Wiltshire Police, the force leading inquiries into the former prime minister.
The force added the intelligence was “not connected to the North Yorkshire area”.
Wiltshire Police said it “wouldn’t discuss any intelligence passed to us”.

Child abuse scandal shocks Pakistan, families angry at police
HUSAIN KHAN WALA, Pakistan By Mehreen Zahra-Malik and Mubasher Bukhari Mon Aug 10, 2015
Parents at the center of a growing child abuse scandal in Pakistan accused police on Monday of failing to do enough to break up a pedophile ring in Punjab province, the prime minister’s political heartland. Villagers in the central Punjabi village of Husain Khan Wala told Reuters that a prominent family there has for years forced children to perform sex acts on video. The footage was sold or used to blackmail their impoverished families. Rubina Bibi says her 13-year-old son was a victim, but when she tried to file a report at the Ganda Singh Wala police station a month and a half ago, “the police station clerk told me to get lost and I was thrown out”. “My son is in the videos, he is a victim,” she said. “Our children were forced into this. They were humiliated. But the police are treating them like criminals.” Another mother, Shakila Bibi, said: “I went to the police station to file a complaint, but instead of registering a (report), they took my son into custody.” Her 15-year-old son is still in jail, she said….
Lawyer Latif Sra, representing some of the victims, said: “I have personally met hundreds of parents who have not yet come forward to file official complaints, either out of fear or shame.”
Police have arrested seven suspects, but downplayed the scale of the abuse, suggesting a land dispute may have sparked accusations. “It’s a very murky situation,” said Babar. He added that seven cases involving 11 children had been registered. Activist Mobeen Ghaznavi said he had 130 video clips containing abuse. “People are afraid. They are being threatened and intimidated,” he said. 7 charged in Pakistan child abuse video case By Sophia Saifi, Ralph Ellis and Laura Smith-Spark, CNN Tue August 11, 2015 Kasur, Pakistan (CNN)Seven people accused of blackmailing scores of children into making sex videos and then blackmailing them again by threatening to sell the recordings have been arrested in Pakistan’s Punjab province. Police Officer Rai Babar Saeed said a gang of 20 to 25 people had abused the children between 2009 and 2014 in the village of Hussain Khan Wala in the Kasur district.
Chaudhary Hamid, a villager, said the gang blackmailed the children into engaging in sexual activity again and again to stop the videos from being leaked. Parents were also blackmailed, he said.
At least one CD shop in Kasur had been selling the videos, Saeed said. In most of the videos, the faces of criminals are not shown, but the child’s face can be seen clearly, the officer said.
Latif Sara, a lawyer representing parents of the abused children and the head of a nongovernmental organization called Children Abuse Protection, said 274 videos had been circulated.
According to a survey by the group last week, one in three of the 500 households questioned in the district of Kasur had a child who had been sexually abused, Sara said.
CNN affiliate Geo TV reported higher numbers, saying around 400 videos were made of 280 minors…. http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/10/asia/pakistan-child-abuse/

Pakistan police officers, spy fired over child abuse case
Associated Press August 12, 2015 (AP) — A top government official in eastern Pakistan says he has fired a provincial intelligence chief and three senior police officers for failing to act against a gang that blackmailed the families of children it sexually abused.
Shahbaz Sharif, the chief minister of Punjab province, made the announcement late Tuesday on social media. It comes amid widening outrage over the child sex abuse scandal, which locals say involves more than 270 children.
Sharif said he had dispatched the province’s police chief to ensure that “investigation is carried out without discrimination and local influence.”

Child sexual abuse ring busted in Pakistan
….Punjab province, Hussain Khan Wala is at the center of a child abuse scandal that has rocked the country.
Villagers accuse police officials of covering up a pedophile ring, after videos emerged of their children being molested by members of a prominent and influential local family.
They say the abuse had been going on since at least 2009, and that the children were blackmailed to steal from their homes to prevent the videos from going public.
“My child stopped going to school; whenever they saw him, they took him into the fields, in the house,” the 35-year-old mother of one victim told CNN. “They raped him for five hours and now it’s finally coming into the open.”….
Lawyer and children’s rights activist Latif Sera says more than 270 children were victims of the pedophile ring, whose members abused children in the fields and in their homestead, outside which, the words “No Entry” are painted in Urdu.
Sera said it was here that the children were drugged, abused and hung upside down naked from ropes.
Sexual abuse and blackmail
A deep well sits ominously in the house’s entrance; villagers tell CNN the family would threaten to drown the children if they complained to their parents.
A 15-year-old boy filmed in one of the videos told CNN he was first raped at the age of nine, after he was approached by a man with a gun while collecting water for his grandfather.
“As soon as I went inside he locked the door. He called out and five more men came in. I started screaming and they covered my mouth. Each of them had a weapon – one had an axe. They said they would cut me into tiny pieces if I made a single sound. Then they raped me.”
He said the abuse continued for another four years, during which time he stole to keep his attackers quiet.
“I stole jewelry and money for them, otherwise they said they would kill me and hyenas and dogs would eat my body,” he explained. “I found $1,300 for them to leave me alone. I stole from my own home, my own family.”
Punjab police say 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with the case. A gang of 20 to 25 people is believed to have been involved in the abuse….
On Tuesday, Punjab province’s chief of police announced that the suspects wold be tried in a terrorism court to expedite the process. He said 3 police officials have been suspended pending an investigation…. http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/12/asia/pakistan-child-sex-abuse-scandal-village/

Senior Melbourne Yeshiva rabbi resigns over handling of child sex abuse scandal
Zvi Telsner apologises for the way he dealt with victims and their families at Melbourne Jewish school and urges ‘everyone to show compassion and support’ Yeshiva College was among the Jewish schools in Melbourne and Sydney examined by the royal commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse.
Australian Associated Press Tuesday 1 September 2015
One of Australia’s most senior rabbis has stepped aside, apologising for his treatment of child sex abuse victims at a Melbourne Jewish school. Rabbi Zvi Telsner has said he will step down immediately as head of Melbourne’s Yeshiva Centre, which manages schools including Yeshiva College, apologising for his behaviour towards victims….
The hearings exposed a culture of turning a blind eye, a lack of knowledge about child abuse and reporting requirements, and a dearth of sympathy for victims between the 1980s and 2010. Children ‘were victims of sectarian abuse’ 01 Sep 2015 Children were allegedly subjected to sectarian abuse by staff at a state run institution, an inquiry heard on Tuesday. Catholic and Protestant residents at the Lisnevin training school in Newtownards were alleged to have fought regularly during the height of the Troubles in the 1970s, according to witnesses. Lawyer Christine Smith QC told the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry (HIA) that the fights were daily.
Ms Smith said that although Lisnevin was non-denominational in 1973, a former resident had claimed there was “sectarian abuse from other residents and staff.” Lisnevin operated as a training school between 1973 and 2003. The Inquiry was also told of abuse allegations at another institution – St Patrick’s in west Belfast. Lawyer Joseph Aiken said fewer than 2% of residents at the Catholic-run school made the allegations. Police considered some of the claims surrounding St Patrick’s to be “demonstrably” false, he said. Of more than 4,000 residents, 66 individuals (1.45%) made allegations to the Inquiry of some form of abuse…. http://www.u.tv/News/2015/09/01/Children-were-victims-of-sectarian-abuse-44134

Ritual Abuse and Mind Control

We Asked an Expert on Ritual Murders About the Triple Homicide in the Florida Panhandle

August 6, 2015 By Allie Conti Staff Writer
This week, people across the country have been freaking out about a crime story that sounds like it came straight out of the good season of True Detective. A sheriff in Florida’s Panhandle, which is also known as the Redneck Riviera and characterized by conservatism and religiosity, announced at a press conference that a ritualistic triple-murder took place in Pensacola last week….
But is it possible that we should be taking the allegedly ritualistic part of this tragedy more seriously? Dawn Perlmutter, an expert on ritual killings and former director of the Institute for the Research of Organized and Ritual Violence, says her phone has been blowing up since the news of the murders broke. (I managed to catch her 20 minutes before she took the stage at the International Association for Identification Crime Scene Conference, where she was giving a lecture on—you guessed it—ritual murders.) Apparently, these kinds of crimes are more prevalent than people might think. “I’ve worked on cases in Ohio, and Florida, and New York,” Perlmutter said. “They’re international, and not specific to either rural places or cities. They can happen everywhere.”….

VICE: Hey Dawn. First off, what makes something a ritual murder?
Dawn Perlmutter: What distinguishes a ritualistic killing from a standard homicide is that it goes beyond what’s necessary just to kill someone. There’s overkill or mutilation. But even more than that, it’s usually some kind of symbolic evidence. For example, symbols carved into the body, there can be symbols painted on the floor, it can be the positioning of the body, the staging. These are your pretty standard signs. They tend to be multiple homicides also. And then you get into other types of things, like significance of dates, or significance of holidays specific to different ideologies….
People seem very riled up by this—understandably. But how common is ritual murder?
I’ve worked on dozens of ritual murders and testified on them. In terms of statistics, I don’t think they’re as common as bank robberies, but they’re certainly more common than serial killing. They occur. They definitely occur. A lot of people don’t believe that they happen, but I just testified in two cases in LA, one last month, that was a ritual killing by a couple. And one was by a young Satanist in LA who murdered his mother. In both of those cases, there was severe mutilation and positioning of the bodies, so there was no doubt they were ritual murders.
What’s the most interesting case you’ve worked on?
I don’t know if interesting is the right term. One of the cases that was very disturbing to me was one in Toledo, Ohio, that involved a priest who ritually killed a nun in the sacristy of the chapel on Easter Saturday. It was a 25-year-old cold case, so it was nice that we could still solve it, and he was convicted. But that was disturbing because so many victims came out saying that had been done, and it was actually horrifying in a number of ways that it had gone on for so long….

Santeria priest claims sexual assault was part of healing ritual, police say
By Veronica Rocha August 6, 2015
A Santeria priest has been accused of sexually assaulting a girl during what he claimed were healing rituals, Montebello police said Thursday.
Police are trying to find Pablo Pinto Mata, 46 — known as a “Santero,” or priest — who often performed healing rituals at his business, Los Angeles Import, in the 2400 block of Whittier Boulevard in Montebello, police said.
But police said his so-called healing rituals were a ploy used to assault a teenager….
In 2013, Mata performed three healing rituals on a 16-year-old girl, police said. During those incidents, the girl had to disrobe. The third time, Mata forced the girl to disrobe and he sexually assaulted her, police said.
Mata told her the assault was part of a ritual common in Santeria, a faith of the Caribbean.
Police think there may be other victims who were sexually assaulted….

US Torture Doctors

US torture doctors could face charges after report alleges post-9/11 ‘collusion’
Leading group of psychologists faces a reckoning following repeated denials that its members were complicit in Bush administration-era torture Spencer Ackerman Saturday 11 July 2015
The largest association of psychologists in the United States is on the brink of a crisis, the Guardian has learned, after an independent review revealed that medical professionals lied and covered up their extensive involvement in post-9/11 torture. The revelation, puncturing years of denials, has already led to at least one leadership firing and creates the potential for loss of licenses and even prosecutions.
For more than a decade, the American Psychological Association (APA) has maintained that a strict code of ethics prohibits its more than 130,000 members to aid in the torture of detainees while simultaneously permitting involvement in military and intelligence interrogations. The group has rejected media reporting on psychologists’ complicity in torture; suppressed internal dissent from anti-torture doctors; cleared members of wrongdoing; and portrayed itself as a consistent ally against abuse.
Now, a voluminous independent review conducted by a former assistant US attorney, David Hoffman, undermines the APA’s denials in full – and vindicates the dissenters.
Sources with knowledge of the report and its consequences, who requested anonymity to discuss the findings before public release, expected a wave of firings and resignations across the leadership of an organization that Hoffman finds used its extensive institutional links to the CIA and US military to facilitate abusive interrogations….

A national hero’: psychologist who warned of torture collusion gets her due
Jean Maria Arrigo was largely ignored and the subject of a smear campaign for sounding alarms about psychologists’ post-9/11 torture complicity but has emerged from the damning report as the story’s hero – and martyr
Spencer Ackerman in New York
Monday 13 July 2015
Jean Maria Arrigo’s inbox is filling up with apologies.
For a decade, colleagues of the 71-year-old psychologist ignored, derided and in some cases attacked Arrigo for sounding alarms that the American Psychological Association was implicated in US torture. But now that a devastating report has exposed deep APA complicity with brutal CIA and US military interrogations – and a smear campaign against Arrigo herself – her colleagues are expressing contrition.
Arrigo estimates she has received perhaps a dozen such emails since David Hoffman, a former federal prosecutor, confirmed what she has crusaded against for a decade: the APA’s institutional involvement with torture led to a concerted effort to quash dissent, lie to the public, and silence people like her. In a story full of villains, Arrigo emerges from Hoffman’s report as a hero – and a martyr…. http://www.theguardian.com/law/2015/jul/13/psychologist-torture-doctors-collusion-jean-maria-arrigo

Child abuse victims murdered and bodies dumped in lake’
THE detective who cracked the Stephen Lawrence case has been investigating claims that child abuse victims were murdered decades ago and their bodies dumped in a lake. By James Murray Sun, Aug 16, 2015
Retired Clive Driscoll spent years investigating child abuse by paedophiles in south London.
In his book, In Pursuit Of The Truth, he recalls interviewing a troubled woman called Vicky, who later starved herself to death. She detailed horrific ritual abuse. The former detective chief inspector writes: “She talked about a place in Kent where she had been taken, along with other children, and made to run away from dogs. “They were dumped in the woods and given a head start before the hunting pack was released. She survived. Other kids weren’t so fortunate.” Mr Driscoll took her back to the isolated spot near Gravesend and discovered landmarks she mentioned from her childhood after being adopted by an abusive couple. He says in the book: “So Vicky’s facts weren’t wrong. In turn, everything else she told me needed taking seriously, including the fact that the injured children were thrown into a lake. “When I checked the police records, I discovered that body parts belonging to five people had been found there.”…. Kent Police said they had no records of human remains being found in a lake during the Sixties…. http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/598643/Stephen-Lawrence-detective-child-abuse-victims-dumped-in-lake

Abandoned, mistreated wild animals rescued from Mexico brought to Colorado animal sanctuary
Phil Tenser, Lindsay Watts Aug 27, 2015 KEENESBURG, Colo. – A dozen wild animals, some used in Mexican circuses, have a new home at a Colorado animal sanctuary. Mexican naval aircraft brought eight African lions, two lynx, a mountain lion and a coyote to Denver Wednesday night. The menagerie then traveled to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, joining about 400 other animals on the 720-acre property. “They have not been treated right, whether that’s been malnourished or physically abused,” said Jason Maxey, with the Wild Animal Sanctuary. “They’ve all suffered quite a bit of neglect and abuse in their life.” Maxey said the lions, most of them cubs, look malnourished and weak. One was limping. Even worse, the rescued coyote was used by its owners for witchcraft. “They literally would tie his front limbs together and then hang him and then perform whatever witchcraft ritual,” said animal care director Rebecca Miceli….

Paedophile witch Robin Fletcher wants supervision conditions eased September 1, 2015 Mark Russell Convicted rapist has spent nearly more than nine years under strict order after serving jail sentence. Robin Fletcher is living in a facility for offenders who have finished their sentences but are deemed an unacceptable risk of reoffending. Paedophile witch Robin Angas Fletcher wants authorities to relax the conditions of a strict supervision order he has been under since 2006.
Fletcher, 59, who is legally blind, has been living in the Corella Place sex offender facility in Ararat since his release after serving eight years’ jail for raping and prostituting two 15-year-old girls. He had pleaded guilty to three counts of committing an indecent act with a child under the age of 16, one count of sexual penetration of a person between 10 and 16, one count of child prostitution and one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Under his current supervision order, Fletcher is not allowed to have access to whips or chains capable of providing sexual stimulus, his internet access to sites has to be approved by authorities and he has to comply with electronic monitoring…..
In an interview with Fairfax Media in July this year, Fletcher said he was not confident of being released in June 2016. “They believe that because I’m a witch, I’m a Satanist,” he said. “They also believe all Satanists are liars. I can express remorse and they can say, ‘But you’re lying.’ I can say, ‘I don’t intend to reoffend’, and they simply say, ‘But you’re lying.'” During a review of Fletcher’s extended supervision order in 2010, the Court of Appeal outlined how Fletcher had been working as a drug abuse and sexual guidance youth counsellor in South Caulfield in the 1990s when he subjected two vulnerable 15-year-old girls to violent sexual acts. “These acts involved their being whipped and beaten on their naked backs and buttocks with objects including a riding crop, causing pain and physical injury,” the appeal judges said. “He [Fletcher] explained his behaviour as being part of a pagan ritual, justified by his religious beliefs which he described as ‘Wiccan’.
“Subsequent to his arrest for these offences he sought the assistance of a fellow prisoner to have the two girls killed so that they could not give evidence against him.”….

Elizabeth Loftus and the Hoffman Report
July 22nd, 2015 The Hoffman Report, an independent investigation into the American Psychological Association’s involvement with government-sponsored torture programs, was released earlier this month. As James Risen reported in the New York Times, the 542-page report concluded that the APA’s ethics office “prioritized the protection of psychologists — even those who might have engaged in unethical behavior — above the protection of the public.” The focus of the report is the involvement of the APA in sanctioning interrogation techniques that included torture. But the Report also contains an important footnote about the lax attitude towards ethics in the APA office long before the post-9/11 era:
The Ethics Office was not insulated from outside influence and the nature of the process allowed for manipulation at times. Koocher told Sidley that Raymond Fowler manipulated the adjudication process when there was a complaint filed against Elizabeth Loftus, a high-profile psychologist who did work on false memories. When Fowler found out there was an ethics complaint pending against Loftus, he reached out to her and told her she should resign her membership before a case could be formally opened against her. He later denied that he had done so and appointed one of his deputies to “investigate” how Loftus had found out about the complaint.
INDEPENDENT REVIEW RELATING TO APA ETHICS GUIDELINES, NATIONAL SECURITY INTERROGATIONS, AND TORTURE, July 2, 2015 (p. 485)
This footnote provides the only explanation that has ever made sense for why Professor Loftus resigned from the APA by fax, shortly after two ethics complaints had been filed against her. The complaints concerned Loftus misrepresenting the facts about two successful recovered-memory lawsuits. Her resignation made the complaints moot under rules that have since been changed to close that loophole….

Loftus testimony in Turner v. Honker, July 10, 1996 (p. 109)
Q: Is it your testimony that prior to your resignation you had no idea from any source that complaints had been filed?
A: I had absolutely no idea
Testimony in Seignious v. Fair, January 22, 1998 (p. 151)
Q: At the time that you resigned, Dr. Loftus, were there two ethics complaints pending against you?
A. There was no ethics investigation going on, but there were rumors two people had filed complaints.
Q. How did you learn about these rumors?
A. I read about it in a newspaper column in February or March of whenever it was, 1996.
Q. And was that the very first time that you learned that there were rumors that people had filed ethics complaints against you?
A. Yes.
Testimony in Liano v. Diocese of Phoenix, December 21, 2006 (p. 68)
Q: And I’m trying to understand. With regard to the [complaints], did you resign from that organization, the American Psychological Association, while those complaints were pending?
A. I don’t know. I resigned in January of ’96, but I didn’t know anything about any complaints.

What Beck Left Out
August 8, 2015 By Ross E. Cheit
The witch-hunt narrative, as described in my book, has deep roots in American culture. It ranges from Salem Massachusetts to the McCarthy hearings of the 1950s. The power of those cautionary tales, however, causes many people to drop their skeptical guard when told that something is a modern day witch-hunt. So it is with the conventional wisdom about the highly publicized day-care sexual abuse cases from the 1980s.
Richard Beck, a comparative literature major from Harvard who works at a literary magazine, is the latest one spreading the witch-hunt narrative about those cases. His book, We Believe the Children, based largely on secondary sources, reaches the same conclusions that Debbie Nathan and defense lawyer Michael Snedeker offered twenty years ago. In both instances, the authors repeatedly omitted significant evidence that contradicts the witch-hunt narrative. Consider some examples of what Beck left out:
Beck reduces all of the medical evidence in the McMartin case to a single paragraph and insinuates that there was no credible medical evidence substantiating sexual abuse (pp. 155-56). But Beck does not tell his readers that even defense lawyer Danny Davis allowed that the genital injuries on one girl were “serious and convincing.” Beck also did not mention that the vaginal injuries on another girl, one of the three involved in both McMartin trials, were considered as proving sexual abuse “to a medical certainty.” Beck also fails to mention that the case began when Judy Johnson saw a drop of blood. Beck allows that the boy was examined twice and, as he put it, both doctors reported suspected child abuse (p. 34). But Beck did not disclose the basis for those reports: the Emergency Room doctor observed the “red and roughened” area around the boy’s anus, concluding that there “appeared to be some friction like trauma to the rectal area.” The pediatric expert who subsequently examined the boy described discolored bruising patterns and said that his anal injury “was within the last week” (Cheit, p. 25). That is why Ray Buckey was arrested….

Beck discusses the Kniffen and McCuan case from Bakersfield, California, presenting them as victims of a witch-hunt (pp. 70-72). But Beck never mentions considerable medical evidence against the McCuans, including vaginal scarring and trauma to the lining of the anus, that occurred between 1980 and 1982 (when Rod Phelps was away). Debbie Nathan once wrote that this evidence “seriously weakened Alvin and Debbie’s protestations of innocence.” But Beck ignored this evidence entirely, also neglecting to mention that the McCuan daughters, unlike the Kniffen sons, have never recanted their claims against their parents. Finally, Beck notes that the convictions of the Kniffens and McCuans were set aside, but he does not reveal that the judge opined that “it may be that all of the acts reported actually occurred” (Cheit, pp. 119-123)….
Beck claims that “no pornography” was ever found in any of these cases (p. xvi). But he neglects to mention that Isabel’s Day Care, not far from the McMartin Preschool, had exactly that kind of evidence. So did the Rainbow Day Care Center case in Fort Lauderdale. So did Robert Shell’s case in Massachusetts. Also, two defendants in the Bakersfield cases were convicted partly because there was photographic evidence of their sexual abuse of children: Charles Bishop and Grant Self (Cheit, pp. 163-165).
Beck also claims that Jesse Friedman, who pleaded guilty to child sex abuse charges, was falsely convicted (pp. 173-181). But he does not mention that Friedman failed two lie detectors, both arranged by his own lawyer, and that the psychological evaluation, also arranged by his own lawyer, concluded that Friedman was a “psychopathic deviant” who was “capable of committing the crimes with which he was charged.” Beck also does not mention that he has never spoken to a single one of the fourteen men who formed the basis for the case. This is significant since Andrew Jarecki, who directed the film, never spoke to the vast majority of actual complainants in the case, either. Nor does Beck acknowledge that two of those men wrote a letter in 2004, objecting to the movie, and attesting to sexual abuse by Jesse Friedman (Cheit, pp. 130-133)….
Beck acknowledges Frank Fuster’s 1982 conviction for lewd and lascivious assault on a minor, but he quickly adds, without any apparent skepticism, that “Frank had always maintained his innocence.” (p. 142). But Beck does not tell his readers that Fuster actually admitted the actions charged in that case, and then tried to minimize them, while testifying at his Parole Violation Hearing three years later (Cheit, p. 337). Here is how Fuster explained what he did to a 9-year-old while driving her home one night:
This is how I touch her chest area. I don’t see any sexual movement here. I also touch her in the vaginal area. That’s it. That’s the whole case.

Nor does Beck acknowledge Frank Fuster’s long record of documented lies about his manslaughter conviction. As I said in The Witch-Hunt Narrative: “one wonders how anyone could cite his denials with utter credulity and without any acknowledgment of the considerable evidence to the contrary” (Cheit, p. 338)….
Richard Beck admits that his work is not investigative journalism (p. xxv). He describes it as history. But historians do not rely on secondary sources for major arguments and historians do not omit evidence for the sake of telling a simplified story. A comprehensive examination of the actual transcripts—something that Beck did not do in a single case beyond McMartin—reveals a different picture. As I wrote last summer:
In many of the cases proclaimed to be witch hunts, looking closely at the record revealed substantial evidence of abuse and compelling reasons that jurors voted to convict. It’s true that I also found cases where people were charged who shouldn’t have been. Yet even in some of those cases, there was strong evidence of abuse. A crime was committed and a child was assaulted by someone who was never apprehended, but only the false accusation story lives on.
And so it is with Richard Beck’s history of these cases. http://blogs.brown.edu/rcheit/2015/08/08/what-beck-left-out/

Former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle to plead guilty in child abuse case
Fogle agrees to plead guilty to allegations he paid for sex acts with minors and received child abuse images, and to pay $1.4m in restitution to 14 victims Mahita Gajanan and agencies Wednesday 19 August 2015
Longtime Subway sandwich pitchman Jared Fogle has agreed to plead guilty to allegations that he paid for sex acts with minors and received child abuse images that he knew had been secretly produced by the former director of his charitable foundation, federal prosecutors said in court documents released on Wednesday. Fogle will plead guilty to one count each of travelling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor and the distribution and receipt of child abuse images after appearing in court in Indianapolis on Wednesday morning. Prosecutors said that under the plea deal, each side will seek a sentence from 5 to 12.5 years in prison. Further hearing dates have not yet been decided.
Court documents said Fogle agrees to pay $1.4m in restitution to 14 minor victims, who will each receive $100,000. Fogle will also be required to register as a sex offender and undergo treatment for sexual disorders….
Federal prosecutors allege in the documents that the married father of two travelled to pay for sex acts, including with minors, from 2007 until as recently as June and that he repeatedly planned business trips to coincide with his sexual pursuits. On 3 November 2012, Fogle allegedly paid a 17-year-old girl who he had found online to engage in sex acts while he was staying at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, according to the papers. Several months later, he again paid her for sex acts while staying at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, according to the document, which says the girl told Fogle her age when they first met and that he knew she was a minor. After the first meeting, the document said, Fogle texted the girl and offered to pay her a fee if she could find him another underage girl to pay for sex acts. During these discussions, Fogle “stated that he would accept a 16-year-old girl, while stating that the younger the girl, the better”, the document said. Between 2011 and 2013, Fogle also repeatedly sent text messages to other escorts, “soliciting them to provide him with access to minors as young as 14 to 15 years”, the document said, adding that he would only make such requests after engaging in sex acts with the escorts to “insure that they were not undercover police officers”.
The document also alleged that Fogle on multiple occasions received sexually explicit images and videos produced by Russell Taylor, 43, who ran the charitable Jared Foundation. The foundation sought to raise awareness about childhood obesity and arranged for Fogle to visit schools and urge children to adopt healthy eating and exercise habits….

Former franchisee alerted Subway about Jared Fogle, lawyer says AP August 27, 2015
NEW YORK — A former franchisee alerted a Subway advertising executive in 2008 about her concerns about pitchman Jared Fogle, according to her lawyer.
Cindy Mills exchanged phone numbers with Fogle after they met at an event, said Robert Beasley, a lawyer in Florida who represents Mills. After Fogle began talking about paying for sex with minors, the lawyer said Mills alerted a regional Subway contact in Florida where her business was based.
Later, he said Mills alerted Jeff Moody, who was in charge of the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust, which handles the company’s marketing….
Beasley said Mills became comfortable about coming forward after Fogle agreed on Aug. 19 to plead guilty to allegations that he paid for sex with girls as young as 16 and received child pornography. Mills was not immediately available for comment Thursday evening. But according to Beasley: -Mills offered to show Moody the texts from Fogle, but Moody stopped her and said he didn’t want to hear anymore. -Moody said he had dealt with similar comments, and reassured Mills that Fogle had met a teacher who would get him grounded. “To me, it was confirmation that they knew about it,” Beasley said…. The agreement with Fogle released by prosecutors said Fogle will pay $1.4 million in restitution to 14 minor victims, who will each get $100,000. The document noted that the payments would not prevent any identified or unidentified victims from pursuing civil litigation….

The woman who helped break the Jared Fogle case
Tim Evans and Mark Alesia, The Indianapolis Star September 1, 2015 INDIANAPOLIS ….the Indianapolis woman who provided information that led police to discover the child pornography that will send Jared Fogle and Russell Taylor — the former head of Fogle’s charitable foundation — to prison for years. ….“If she doesn’t make the phone call, we don’t find out about Taylor,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve DeBrota told The Indianapolis Star. “If we don’t find out about Taylor, we don’t find out about Fogle. And 14 (young victims) wouldn’t have been rescued.” Less than two weeks after Fogle, the former Subway sandwich pitchman, agreed to plead guilty to child pornography charges, Taylor on Tuesday also took a plea deal….
Taylor’s plea is the latest development in the shocking child pornography investigation that shattered Fogle’s wholesome and lucrative image and exposed the criminal activities of the man Fogle hired to run his charitable organization focused on fighting childhood obesity….

Perverse text messages led to Jared Fogle’s downfall Hayley Peterson September 2, 2015
An investigation into Subway’s ex-spokesman Jared Fogle’s connection to child pornography picked up steam last fall thanks to a phone call from an Indianapolis woman, the Indianapolis Star reports.
The woman, identified in court papers as “Jane Doe,” said she was getting disturbing messages from Russell Taylor, a friend of Fogle’s who was also the head of his charitable foundation, the Jared Foundation. Jane Doe called an Indiana state police officer and told him about the messages.
“If she doesn’t make the phone call, we don’t find out about Taylor,” Assistant US Attorney Steve DeBrota told The Indianapolis Star. “If we don’t find out about Taylor, we don’t find out about Fogle. And 14 [young victims] wouldn’t have been rescued.” In the messages, Taylor had “offered to send her images or videos of young girls,” an affidavit states. “Russell Taylor made this offer during a series of text messages that included discussions of sexual matters, including bestiality and sadistic or masochistic abuse.”….
Getz said he viewed the messages on Jane Doe’s phone in October 2014 and discovered that she and the Taylors had exchanged dozens of texts that were sexual in nature, according to the affidavit.
Jane Doe apparently grew uncomfortable with the messages when Taylor allegedly began offering to send her child pornography and asked if he and another adult woman could engage in a sexual act with one of her horses…..
Police discovered videos of nude children ages 11 to 16 who were secretly recorded in his home, according to the affidavit. Investigators also found a thumb drive containing commercially produced child pornography, along with a document with Taylor’s employer, the Jared Foundation, listed in the file name. In a plea deal Tuesday, Taylor admitted to secretly producing videos of 12 children and sharing some of the videos with Fogle. He faces at least 15 years in prison….

UCT PhD study shows link between trauma exposure and physical health
RDM News Wire 11 August, 2015
A study by a University of Cape Town (UCT) doctoral graduate has demonstrated a clear link between trauma exposure‚ chronic physical conditions and other mental disorders – the first time that a scientific study has established this link.
These findings could be useful in designing interventions aimed at reducing the burden of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)‚ chronic physical conditions and other mental disorders‚ UCT said in a statement on Tuesday.
Using the data collected in the South African stress and health study‚ associate professor Lukoye Atwoli found that there was an association between trauma exposure and chronic physical conditions such as arthritis‚ cardiovascular disease‚ respiratory disease and chronic pain.
He also found a link between trauma exposure and other mental disorders‚ such as mood and anxiety disorder. Trauma exposure also increased the risk of chronic physical conditions such as chronic pain‚ cardiovascular and respiratory disease and arthritis….

Scale of child abuse images online is ‘shocking’, says NSPCC
Charity claims there are two convictions each day for indecent images and calls for urgent action two years after government promised crackdown
More than a quarter of those convicted of viewing abuse images were also found guilty of other sexual crimes. Press Association Tuesday 21 July 2015
Two people are being convicted of child abuse image crimes every day on average, two years after a government pledge to crack down on the offence, the NSPCC says.
The charity said its analysis of news reports showed there had been at least 1,000 court cases involving indecent images of children since David Cameron’s July 2013 speech in which he threatened to impose tough new laws on internet companies if they failed to blacklist key search terms.
The NSPCC said a snapshot of 100 cases revealed that 4.5m child abuse images were discovered among them, with one in three of the 101 convicted criminals involved having held a position of trust or a role that allowed them access to children….
Six out of 10 were jailed. Those convicted included a father and son, and a teenager who confessed to viewing such pictures from the age of 12. More than a quarter were also convicted of other sexual crimes, including grooming, voyeurism, and indecent assault, and one in six already had criminal records for similar offences….

FBI: Child Abuse ‘Almost at an Epidemic Level’ in U.S. Tara John July 30, 2015 The bureau rescued 600 children last year Tens of thousands of children are being sexually exploited each year in the U.S., according to an investigation by the BBC. Despite rescuing 600 children last year, the FBI says child sex abuse is at epidemic levels where tens of thousands of children are believed to be sexually exploited in the country each year. “The level of paedophilia is unprecedented right now,” Joseph Campbell of the FBI told the BBC.
Campbell, who works in the Criminal Investigation Division, has seen individuals from all walks of life engaged in both child pornography and child exploitation, calling it a problem “almost at an epidemic level.” Hundreds of American children are also being sold into sex, according to the BBC, where poverty and neglect are thought to be some of the main reasons why young kids are vulnerable to sex trafficking…. http://time.com/3978236/american-children-sold-sex/

Sex trafficking: Lifelong struggle of exploited children
By Ian Pannell BBC News 30 July 2015
In the US, poverty, deprivation and exploitation draw thousands of its own children down into a dark underworld that offers few ways out. It is a world few Americans are aware of. But tens of thousands of American children are thought to be sexually exploited every year. It’s believed that every night hundreds are sold for sex. The FBI says child sex abuse is almost at an epidemic level, despite the agency rescuing 600 children last year…. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-33710224

Human trafficking: The lives bought and sold
28 July 2015 Millions of men, women and children around the world are currently victims of human trafficking – bought and sold as commodities into prostitution and forced labour. This trade in people criss-crosses the globe – and it is a lucrative business. The International Labour Office estimates that forced labour generates $150bn (£96bn) in illegal profits every year. Two thirds ($99bn; £63bn) comes from sexual exploitation.
But who are the people behind the numbers?
Kemi and Bilkisu, from Nigeria, Jane from the UK and Gabby from the US describe how they fell prey to traffickers.
Kemi’s story, Nigeria
Thousands of women and girls from West Africa are bought and sold every year – most end up in Europe. The UN’s Office on Drugs and Crime estimates West African trafficking victims, many of whom originate in Nigeria, make up about 10% of those forced into sex work in Western Europe.
Benin City, in Nigeria’s south, is a key player – with networks and infrastructure built around the trade in people….
Gabby’s story, US
It is a similar story in the United States, where tens of thousands of children are being trafficked into prostitution. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says child exploitation is at “near-epidemic levels”. Gabby, from Baltimore, says she was abused by her father between the ages of eight and 12 – a relationship that she feels has influenced how she interacts with men. “I learnt very early that you could get things that you wanted or needed through sexual favours,” she says. Gabby says she turned to drugs and fell into a relationship with an addict who, years later, pushed her into prostitution…. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-33592634

Why the silence? Child abuse expert weighs in Anne Schindler, First Coast News August 25, 2015
Pedophiles can wield enormous influence over their victims – and their communities. That power often means the abuse is followed by years of silence.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As became clear in the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case at Penn State, pedophiles can wield enormous influence over their victims – and their communities. That power often means the abuse is followed by years of silence. But child abuse expert Stacy Pendarvis says time – and even justice — can help restore the balance of power. Pendarvis is the program manager at the Monique Burr Foundation, a Jacksonville nonprofit that works to end all types of child victimization. She says that while the allegations in the Pak’s Karate case may seem staggering, but they fit a familiar pattern – multiple victims, hundreds of incidents, over a period of many years. “You think of priests pastors and teachers — they use that position of power to totally manipulate their victims. That just tends to be the norm with pedophiles.” Perhaps the most confounding part of the pattern: silence. “More often than not, they do not disclose as children. And that sad reality allows offenders to continue to offend year after year after year, and take on new victims.”…. http://www.firstcoastnews.com/story/news/local/2015/08/25/why-kids-stay-silent/32357821/

The number of child abuse cases in the military hits a decade high By Missy Ryan September 2, 2015 Confirmed cases of abuse and neglect of military children increased markedly in 2014, Defense Department data showed on Wednesday, prompting concerns among Pentagon about efforts to safeguard the nation’s over 1 million military children. In fiscal year 2014, officials tracking family violence within the military confirmed 7,676 cases of child abuse or neglect, an increase of 10 percent from the previous year, according to annual statistics on child abuse and domestic violence. Confirmed cases of neglect – which excludes physical and sexual abuse – rose by 14 percent, military officials said.
The data, which has not been released publicly and was obtained by the Washington Post, contrasts with a years-long decline in child abuse and neglect among civilian families nationwide….
David Finkelhor, director of the Crimes against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire, said the rate of abuse among military families, at 5.6 victims per 1,000 children, remains well below that for the general population, which is around 9 per 1,000 nationally….
The Pentagon is also struggling to end a chronic problem with sexual assault among service members. In May, the Defense Dept. released a report showing that instances of sexual assault had fallen but that retaliation against those who report such attacks remains a major problem. For the first time, the military is also expanding the scope of its effort to contain sexual assault to include male-on-male attacks. The family abuse data also shows positive trends, including a 6 percent decrease in spousal abuse in 2014.

Only Half of Abused Children Evaluated for Occult Fracture Jenni Laidman July 13, 2015
Despite some 20 years of recommendations to perform a skeletal survey on infants and toddlers with injuries associated with abuse, hospital personnel failed to conduct such surveys in roughly half of suspected abuse cases, according to results from a study published online July 13 in Pediatrics.
Joanne N. Wood, MD, MSHP, from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and colleagues examined data from 4486 children younger than 2 years with a diagnosis of abuse or injuries often associated with abuse at 366 hospitals from 2009 to 2013. The study indicated that 48% of children with an abuse diagnosis and 51% of infants with traumatic brain injury were evaluated with a skeletal survey for occult fracture. Only 53% of infants with femur fractures were examined for further fractures, the researchers found.
studies suggest that skeletal surveys would have revealed occult fractures in approximately 25% to 30% of the children in the study, which means about 1 in every 7 or 8 children might have had an undiagnosed occult fracture, the authors report…. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/847835
