Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert abused 4 boys, prosecutors say
By Faith Karimi, CNN  Sun Apr 10, 2016  The revelation comes days before his April 27 sentencing in a financial violation case. He pleaded guilty last year to structuring money transactions to evade reporting where he took massive amounts of funds he was withdrawing.
Investigators said the transactions involved $3.5 million he paid in hush money to one of his accusers.
Prosecutors listed four boys Hastert allegedly abused at a high school in Yorkville, Illinois.
An additional one — a fifth student — died years later, according to the document.
Accuser allegedly paid off
The accusations came to light after investigators found out he was paying an ex-student to stay quiet about sexual abuse allegations, prosecutors allege.
The student was among four others who told investigators he abused them, including one who was 14 at the time, the documents allege.
The allegations date to the 1960s and 1970s, according to the prosecutors’ court filing.
Hastert will not face sexual abuse charges because the statutes of limitation have expired….

Judge sentences ‘serial child molester’ Hastert to 15 months Aamer Madhani and John Bacon, USA TODAY  April 27, 2016 CHICAGO — Former House speaker Dennis Hastert, who less than a decade ago stood second in line to the presidency, was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison Wednesday for a bank fraud case linked to allegations he sexually abused teen boys more than 30 years ago. Federal Judge Thomas Durkin called Hastert, 74, a “serial child molester” and rejected a prosecutor’s recommendation of six months in prison on a banking charge that carries a maximum five-year sentence. The court also fined Hastert $250,000 and sentenced him to two years of supervised release after leaving prison. Hastert must register as a sex offender. “Nothing is more disturbing than having ‘serial child molester’ and ‘Speaker of the House’ in the same sentence,” Durkin said. Hastert, who entered court in a wheelchair and needed help standing to address the judge, admitted for the first time mistreating some athletes when he was a high school wrestling coach in Illinois before he began his political career. “I want to apologize to the boys I mistreated,” Hastert said. “They looked (up) at me and I took advantage of them.”…

Former students call for inquiry into assault claims  By Jonathan Saltzman and Jenn Abelson Globe Staff  May 10, 2016  Two former students of the Fessenden School in Newton on Monday demanded a federal inquiry into alleged sexual assaults by staffers there in the 1960s and 1970s, saying they believe the suspected abuse extends far beyond the 17 individuals the school says have come forward.
Adrian Hooper and John Sweeney, two former Fessenden students who allege they were sexually assaulted, spoke at an emotional news conference at the Boston office of their lawyer, Mitchell Garabedian….
The news conference came a day after the Globe Spotlight team reported that at least 67 private schools in New England have since 1991 faced allegations that at least 200 students were abused or harassed by staffers. Separately, Phillips Academy in Andover confirmed Monday a new claim of misconduct toward a student by a former English teacher….
Only recently, Hooper added, he realized that one of two teachers who had him and several other boys masturbate each other in what they were told was a “Mayan ritual” at Fessenden was Clarridge. He recognized Clarridge in a photograph from an online Harvard publication provided by a Globe reporter, he said, and nearly threw up.
The Fessenden School, whose famous alumni include Senator Edward M. Kennedy and Howard Hughes, has not disputed any specific allegations of abuse documented in the Globe article on Sunday. The school says that at least 12 former students have come forward since Fessenden sent a letter to the school community in 2011 reporting claims of abuse there since the 1960s. All told, the school says, 17 victims have alleged abuse by at least five former staffers.
The school reiterated an apology in a statement Monday….
The two former students called on the school to provide all records about at least four cases that Fessenden says it settled with alleged victims since the 1990s.
The school issued a statement Monday saying: “We are deeply saddened, and we apologize on behalf of the school to those who were harmed. In 2011, The Fessenden School acknowledged and apologized for abuses that took place decades ago and offered counseling to anyone who was harmed. We have acted with compassion and concern for the victims.’’….

Olympic speedskater Bridie Farrell joins push to pass N.Y. child abuse law
BY Glenn Blain NEW YORK DAILY NEWS ALBANY BUREAU Monday, April 25, 2016  ALBANY — The effort to pass legislation that would allow sexually abused children to bring lawsuits as adults will get a personal assist next week from Olympic speedskater Bridie Farrell. Report: Joe Paterno told alleged Jerry Sandusky victim to forget about sex abuse   USA TODAY Sports May 7, 2016
A court order claims that former Penn State football coach knew of sexual abuse allegations as early as 1976. USA TODAY Sports
A second report has surfaced that late Penn State coach Joe Paterno was informed in the 1970s of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky’s sexual abuse of children.
In a CNN report released Friday, a man described as a troubled young kid in 1971 said he was raped by Sandusky in a Penn State bathroom. Then, he told CNN, Paterno ignored his complaint about it.
Also Friday, NBC Sports reported that “as many as six” Penn State assistant coaches witnessed abusive acts by Sandusky, dating to the 1970s.
The latest allegations come one day after PennLive reported that Paterno was allegedly told in 1976 about an accusation of child sexual abuse by Sandusky.
The PennLive report cites a court order connected to an insurance coverage case involving Penn State. The order includes a line that one of the school’s insurers has claimed “in 1976, a child allegedly reported to PSU’s Head Coach Joseph Paterno that he (the child) was sexually molested by Sandusky.” The filing also cites incidents of other assistant football coaches witnessing “inappropriate contact between Sandusky and unidentified children.”
Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of child sex abuse in June 2012, five months after Paterno’s death, and is serving 30 to 60 years in prison. Lawyers for Sandusky, 72, have been in court this week attempting to overturn his conviction.
In CNN’s report Friday, the accuser — who was 15 at the time of the alleged attack in 1971 — said he has never before spoken publicly about the abuse but that he did confide in a friend in the 1970s. That friend verified the story, CNN says….

Sandusky victim: Joe Paterno told me to drop abuse accusation  By Sara Ganim, CNN   Sun May 8, 2016
(CNN)After four years of feuding over the legacy of Joe Paterno, with a few vague details about what he may have known about allegations of sexual abuse by one of his coaches, it is becoming clear there may be much more.
There are now two allegations by men who say they were sexually abused by Jerry Sandusky, who also say they reported their abuse to the legendary coach in the 1970s.
One of those allegations was made public in a court order related to a lawsuit Penn State University filed against its former insurer over who should have to pay settlements to the more than 30 men who have come forward as victims of Sandusky. The victim was not identified, and the details come from a deposition that is sealed.
The other has spoken to CNN, in great detail, explaining how he was a troubled young kid in 1971 when he was raped in a Penn State bathroom by Jerry Sandusky. Then, he says, his complaint about it was ignored by Paterno….

Penn State settlements covered 1971 Sandusky abuse claim
The Associated Press May 9, 2016
Penn State’s legal settlements with Jerry Sandusky’s accusers cover alleged abuse dating to 1971, which was 40 years before his arrest, the university said Sunday, providing the first confirmation of the time frame of abuse claims that have led to big payouts.
The disclosure came as Penn State President Eric Barron decried newly revealed allegations that former football coach Joe Paterno was told in 1976 that Sandusky had sexually abused a child and that two assistant coaches witnessed either inappropriate or sexual contact in the late 1980s. Paterno, who died in 2012, had said the first time he had received a complaint against Sandusky was in 2001.
Barron said the accusations were unsubstantiated, and suggested that the university is being subjected unfairly to what he called rumor and innuendo.
Responding to questions about the president’s statement and claims against the school, university spokesman Lawrence Lokman told The Associated Press he could confirm that the earliest year of alleged abuse covered in Penn State’s settlements is 1971.
Sandusky graduated from Penn State in 1965 and returned as a full-time defensive coach in 1969.
The university has paid out more than $90 million to settle more than 30 civil claims involving Sandusky, now 72 and serving a lengthy prison sentence for the sexual abuse of 10 children. But few details have been provided on the payouts by either the school or lawyers for those who said they were Sandusky’s victims even before the period covered by the criminal investigation.
The allegations about Paterno and the assistant coaches were cited in a ruling last week by Philadelphia Judge Gary Glazer in litigation between an insurance company and Penn State over how much of the settlement costs the school must bear.
The insurers cited an allegation that a boy had told the longtime Penn State football coach in 1976 that he had been molested by Sandusky. The court document also cited statements, from those claiming they had been Sandusky’s victims, that two unidentified assistant coaches had said they witnessed inappropriate contact between Sandusky and children in the late 1980s….

Kenneth Clarke ‘failed to act’ over Lord Janner and Cyril Smith child abuse tip-offs
Government’s sex abuse inquiry – which has first preliminary hearing on Wednesday – will hear claims that former home secretary was warned of abuse in the early 90s
By David Barrett, Home Affairs Correspondent 8 Mar 2016
Kenneth Clarke failed to act on warnings that Greville Janner and Cyril Smith had been accused of child sex abuse by several alleged victims, the Government’s official inquiry will be told.
As Justice Lowell Goddard holds her first preliminary hearing, a victims’ campaigner will claim that Mr Clarke, who was home secretary from 1992 to 1993, was sent details of a series of sex assaults by the MPs.
The allegations by Nigel O’Mara, a leading figure in the sex abuse survivors organisation WhiteFlowers, will add further weight to claims that information was overlooked by the authorities.
Lawyers for Mr O’Mara said they would challenge a decision by Justice Goddard not to award their client special “core participant” status in the inquiry, which grants the right to examine evidence and be represented in the hearings.
In a statement released ahead of the hearing, Mr O’Mara said: “In 1992 I co-founded Survivors UK, a helpline for survivors of male rape and sexual abuse.
We received a series of calls from young men alleging that they had been sexually abused, while they were children in care, by Greville Janner MP and Cyril Smith MP.
“In 1992/93 I wrote, on behalf of Survivors UK, to the home secretary, Kenneth Clarke, informing him of the multiple allegations of sexual assault on children by Greville Janner MP and Cyril Smith MP.”
The allegations were made in calls to telephone counsellors at a hotline run by the charity by young men who said they had been abused while living in children’s homes.
“I asked the home secretary to investigate these allegations of sexual abuse of children by these powerful men. No response was received,” said Mr O’Mara.
“A key issue with Greville Janner and Cyril Smith is how they were able to go unchallenged and unprosecuted for so many years….

Lord Janner lied to child abuse inquiry in 1992 documents reveal Telegraph Reporters  4 April 2016   Lord Janner lied about evidence he gave to a child abuse inquiry – with the inquiry chairman’s permisson, newly-released documents reveal. The peer gave evidence in private to the 1992 Kirkwood Inquiry into child abuse in Leicestershire care homes in the wake of the conviction of paedophile Frank Beck.  Documents obtained by the BBC show the inquiry looked into claims Lord Janner sexually abused a boy from a care home whom he had “befriended” in the 1970s.  The boy, as an adult in his 30s, reported the allegations to the police in 1991. They were then made public by Beck at his trial that year.  The 1992 documents show that after his questioning – on June 19, 1992 – Lord Janner asked the inquiry’s chairman Andrew Kirkwood QC if he could tell the media waiting outside that he had not been asked about allegations of child abuse against him.  Mr Kirkwood replied: “Of course, Mr Janner.”   The documents show this was not true, and the revelation that the real substance of the inquiry’s questioning was withheld from the media will further fuel allegations of a cover-up. Lord Janner was not prosecuted at the time and he rubbished the child abuse claims in the House of Commons.  He also refused to answer police questions.
The Kirkwood files will be crucial evidence for the national child abuse inquiry, chaired by Justice Lowell Goddard, which will examine the Janner case, including whether the inquiry wrongly left out allegations against Lord Janner in its final report.

Predatory paedophile walks from court despite sixth child abuse offence A PREDATORY paedophile who was being sentenced for child abuse for the sixth time has walked free from court.
Rapist Sidney Hare, 88, repeatedly abused numerous youngsters during a quarter of a century, offering them cash and sweets or inviting them to see his tortoise.
And when he got seven years in 2006 a judge told him his age and ill heath, he was said to have late stage bowel cancer, were the only things stopping him getting life.
Now, almost ten years later, Hare has admitted molesting another youngster in 1981 during the latest depraved attack to come to light.
Colin Meeke, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court the dad of the 10-year-old victim, now a woman in her 40s, had worked with Hare in a factory.
Around Easter time in 1981, he said the girl and her sister were walking past the defendant’s house on Thorne Road, Eldene, when they saw him at the door.
He said that he offered them some money and sweets and after giving some to her sister he said he had nothing else in his pockets.
After inviting them into his house he took the little girl upstairs to go through the pockets of other clothes while her younger sister waited downstairs.
The pervert them pushed her on to the bed and climbed on top of her, simulating intercourse, as he pawed at her over her clothing before she fought him off.
Mr Meeke said: “She didn’t tell anyone about it, as people didn’t in those days.
“It wasn’t for some years, until she saw him at a birthday party about 20 years ago, that she first told anybody about it. Then, more recently, she has reported the matter to the police.”
When he was questioned by the police he was frank about what had happened and said he recalled the girl’s name and that she came to his house.
Hare, now of Ashmead Court, Trowbridge, pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault.
He was jailed for seven years in 2006 after admitting raping and abusing two sisters starting when they were about four between, January 1974 and the end of 1983.
That hearing was told he had advanced cancer of the bowel, asbestosis and a heart pacemaker which had to be refitted every six months.
His first conviction was in 1973 when he received a suspended sentence for two indecent assaults on young girls aged eight and nine years old.
In August 1981 he was put on a two-year probation order for indecently assaulting a nine-year-old girl.
Two years later he received another suspended sentence for abusing the sister of the young girls he raped.
And in 2004 he was jailed for 12 months for indecent assaults on an eight-year-old girl dating from 1995 and 1996….
Passing sentence Judge Peter Blair QC said: “I have to punish you for something you did 35 years ago.
“In reality if it had been reported back then I expect you would have had probation as the sentence.”
He imposed an 18-month community rehabilitation order and told him to register as a sex offender for five years, though he has to register for life under his last sentence.

Valls appeals to French cardinal over child abuse allegations
French Prime Minister Manuel Valls says Cardinal Philippe Barbarin must “take responsibility” over an alleged pedophilia cover up. He is one of six people implicated in an investigation into a 70-year-old priest.
Valls told BFM TV on Tuesday that without wanting to overrule the Church or judges investigating the case, Barbarin “must take responsibility, speak and act.”
He stopped short of calling for Barbarin’s resignation but said “action, as well as words” were required.
Barbarin hit back at a press conference later, insisting for a second time: “I have never covered up pedophilia,” although he admitted he had made mistakes.
The scandal relates to an investigation into an elderly priest, Bernard Preynat, who was charged in January with historic child sex abuse.
Several victims have come forward making claims dating back to the 1980s. One of them, who was allegedly abused while in the Scouts, filed a complaint after he realized that the priest was still in service in 2015.
Church hush-up?
Prosecutors say Preynat has admitted the charges and was finally removed from service in May last year. But when the claims were initially investigated, he was just briefly suspended and then moved to another parish. Other victims have since come forward claiming to have been abused between 1986 and 1991.
Complaints have been filed against several senior officials in the Lyon diocese in eastern France, including Lyon archbishop Barbarin, accusing them of being aware of the abuse but failing to report the priest.
Barbarin has argued he was not Archbishop when the first complaints emerged against Preynat.
The Cardinal said he learned of Preynat’s “behaviors” in 2007 or 2008, and met with him “to ask if, since 1991, anything had happened; he assured me there had been absolutely nothing.”
French prosecutors are investigating whether charges of failure to denounce a crime and endangering the lives of others could be made in the context of the pedophilia investigation….

Child abuse scandal casts ‘spotlight’ on France’s top Catholic  2016-03-16
Allegations of a cover-up in the highest reaches of French Catholicism have revived the spectre of clerical child sex abuse and cast a pall over France’s most prominent cardinal
….the allegations have the potential to profoundly rattle the Church in a country where half the population continues to consider itself Catholic. In particular, they threaten to derail the career of France’s most prominent clergyman, Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, the archbishop of Lyon, a man long touted as a possible candidate for the papacy.
The 65-year-old prelate has fiercely denied charges that he covered up paedophilia crimes by failing to remove a priest in his diocese known to have abused boy scouts decades before he took up his post in 2002. Barbarin is also accused of failing to act against another Lyon priest when it emerged in 2009 he had abused a boy in the past.
“I have never, never, never covered up acts of paedophilia,” Barbarin said at a press conference on Tuesday, noting that the cases had passed the legal statute of limitations when they were reported. He added an unfortunate “thank God” – and later apologised for his choice of words.
The cardinal spoke just hours after French Prime Minister Manuel Valls urged him to “take his responsibility and act” upon the allegations of cover-up – a rare step for France, which has a strict separation of church and state.
Pandora’s box
Barbarin is among six church officials targeted in a preliminary judicial investigation that grew out of allegations that a priest had molested boy scouts in the 1980s. Barbarin wasn’t a cardinal at the time and says he was convinced the priest had been reformed by the time he found out about the abuse in 2007.
The priest, Bernard Preynat, was charged on January 27 of this year with sexual aggression and rape of a minor by a person in authority. The charges are based on complaints filed by members of an association of alleged victims of the priest, known as Parole libérée (Freed word).
Several of the alleged victims have spoken to Euronews journalist Valérie Gauriat about the abuse….
The association says it has received dozens of testimonies from alleged victims, who had previously kept quiet about their story, or were simply not listened to. “Since our establishment, barely two months ago, we have been submerged by messages from victims seeking psychological support or advice,” says Dominique Murillot, the wife of a former child abuse victim and a psychologist at Parole libérée….
Adding to Barbarin’s woes, Le Parisien reported that the Lyon cardinal had in 2013 promoted a convicted sex offender, whose suspended jail term in 2007 was well known to the archdiocese….
France was shocked last year by the disclosure that a school headmaster who had been appointed despite a previous conviction for possessing child pornography was charged with aggravated rape of several pupils.
On Wednesday, the Education Ministry said it had struck off twenty-seven members of staff in French schools and high schools in 2015 because of paedophilia-related offenses, adding that it would tighten cooperation with the justice ministry to scrutinize the criminal records of all teachers it employs….

Feds May Seek Racketeering Suit for Clergy Abuse in Diocese
By The Associated Press PITTSBURGH  Apr 3, 2016
A federal prosecutor may file a racketeering lawsuit against a Roman Catholic diocese where a state grand jury found two former bishops helped cover up the sexual abuse of hundreds of children by more than 50 clergy over a 40-year period.
The ongoing investigation of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese grew out of the prosecution of the Rev. Joseph Maurizio Jr., U.S. Attorney David Hickton said Friday.
The 71-year-old Somerset County priest was convicted last year of molesting two street children during missionary trips to Honduras. He was sentenced to nearly 17 years in prison, fined $50,000 and forced to pay his victims $10,000 each.
Hickton said the ongoing investigation concerns whether diocesan officials engaged in a pattern of criminal activity that would fall under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, commonly referred to as RICO.
The statute of limitations has lapsed on criminal racketeering charges, but there is no time limit for filing a RICO lawsuit, Hickton said. KDKA-TV first reported that Hickton was considering such a lawsuit. A diocesan spokesman didn’t immediately comment.
“The remedy that would be available under a civil RICO would be some sort of injunctive relief,” Hickton said. “If we were able to get a consent decree, that would be one route.”
Injunctive relief is simply a court order requiring the diocese to do something. A consent decree is a voluntary agreement between prosecutors and a target that certain reforms would be enacted….

Priest removed for sex abuse works at pregnancy center for teens  Niraj Warikoo, Detroit Free Press   May 9, 2016   Catholic priest removed in 2009 from two churches amid allegations he abused teen is now a director at Eastpointe center for teens that he cofounded
A Catholic priest removed from churches in metro Detroit after he was accused of sexually abusing a teenager is now the development director of a new Catholic center in Eastpointe he cofounded that counsels pregnant teenagers, prompting calls for him to step down.
The Rev. Kenneth Kaucheck, 69, was banned from public ministry by the Archdiocese of Detroit in 2009 after church officials determined he had sexual misconduct in the 1970s with a 16-year-old girl he was counseling as a priest.

The vile sex abuse by UN peacekeepers is leaving the United Nations in tatters Cathy Newman Channel 4 News Presenter 14 April 2016 Sexual violence in war “is as destructive as any bomb or bullet”, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said a couple of years ago….
Sexual violence in conflict is one of the oldest crimes. The ancient Greeks are said to have believed that raping women was socially acceptable, and the women themselves were legitimate spoils of war. But this is happening right now. In 2016….
There were no fewer than 99 allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation by the “blue helmets” – as UN military personnel are nicknamed – last year, and there have been 25 new claims this year. And those are just the ones we know about.
What’s perhaps even more shocking is that this isn’t the first time such claims have surfaced about the conduct of UN peacekeepers. There was an alleged paedophile ring in the Democratic Republic of Congo, UN police officers in Bosnia were paying for prostitutes and trafficking young women from Eastern Europe, and Pakistani peacekeepers were found guilty of sexual abuse in Haiti. There’s a track record going back decades….

French education minister says 27 school staff fired for child sex abuse   016-03-16
Twenty-seven members of staff in French schools and high schools were struck off in 2015 because of pedophilia-related offenses, Education Minister Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said Wednesday.
Vallaud-Belkacem said most of those fired where male staffers. She did not say whether they were teachers or administrative personnel, nor when the offenses happened.
France was shocked last year by the disclosure that a school headmaster who had been appointed despite a previous conviction for possessing child pornography was charged with aggravated rape of several pupils. Earlier this year, a high school teacher who had been convicted in Britain 10 years ago was given preliminary charges of sexual assault after police found pornographic images and video in his mobile phone.
According to a report aiming at improving communication between the ministries of education and justice published Wednesday, 19 members of staff in schools and high schools were fired in 2014 in cases related to child pornography or pedophilia. There were 26 staff at French schools laid off in 2013 for the same reason, and 15 in 2012.
“We believe that a teacher, or an adult, or an administrative agent in contact with children can’t work with children as soon as he has been sentenced for offenses as serious as pedophilia or child pornography,” Vallaud-Belkacem told RTL radio….

Newsweek Article on Alleged Hasidic Child Abuse Sparks Brooklyn Yeshiva Protest By Lucy Westcott On 3/18/16  About 40 protesters holding signs and chanting gathered outside the Ohlei Torah yeshiva in Brooklyn on a snowy Sunday evening in response to a Newsweek exposé on the alleged sexual and physical abuse of students by rabbis at the school.
Chaim Levin, the protest organizer whose story of abuse at Oholei Torah was chronicled in the Newsweek article, on Sunday spoke about the physical and sexual abuse he says he and other students at Ohlei were forced to suffer, saying: “It’s unfathomable to me that the people who did this kind of violence are teaching.”….
A statement on the Facebook page for the protest read: “For too long, teachers and principals in this school have ignored children being abused physically and sexually. There is evidence to suggest that in most of these cases the school knew about these crimes and chose not to act.”
“Furthermore, three of the people mentioned in the Newsweek article, people who either abused children themselves or oversaw it, are still employed by the school,” the statement said.
The protesters were demaing an end to child abuse, the replacement of abusive staff and apologies to victims of childhood sexual abuse. Organizers also want victims to be paid compensation “for the damage caused by abuse,” they said in a press release….

Yeshiva University High School students whose sexual abuse was covered up by administration want changes to statute of limitations law  by Michael O’keeffe  NEW YORK DAILY NEWS  Wednesday, March 30, 2016  They got an apology, but they never got justice.  Thirty-four former students at the prestigious Yeshiva University High School claimed in a bombshell $680 million lawsuit that administrators had covered up abuse for decades….
A federal judge tossed the lawsuit in 2014 — not because the plaintiffs’ claims against the school in Washington Heights were without merit, but because of a persistent obstacle to justice for child victims of sexual abuse in New York State. The statute of limitations had expired.
“We lost for one reason, and one reason only,” said Barry Singer, one of the plaintiffs in the case. “(The school) disputed none of our allegations and we still lost. The only thing to do now is to change the statute of limitations. The statute of limitations protects institutions; it does not protect children.”
New York’s statute of limitations bars child victims from pursuing criminal charges or civil litigation after their 23rd birthday.  Some of the accusers said administrator Rabbi George Finkelstein targeted them because they were children of Holocaust survivors. He begged the victims not to add to their parents’ suffering by reporting his abuse of students.
In a shocking December 2012 story by The Forward reporter Paul Berger, former Yeshiva University President Norman Lamm acknowledged he failed to notify authorities after students told him they had been sexually abused at the school. School officials quickly offered what they called a “profound apology.”….

Boston Archdiocese settles with 7 alleged victims of clergy abuse By Brian MacQuarrie Globe Staff  March 28, 2016  The Archdiocese of Boston has agreed to settlements involving cash and counseling with seven people who say they were sexually abused by priests, including one case that stretches back to the 1930s, according to the attorney for the alleged victims.
Two other settlements with religious orders have been reached in cases involving priests who allegedly abused victims while they worked in the archdiocese, according to the attorney, Mitchell Garabedian.
Another, separate settlement with the Carmelite Order involved a brother who had been accused of abuse in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles before being assigned to a chapel at the Northshore Mall in Peabody.
In all, the 10 settlements paid $778,500 and involved allegations of sexual abuse in every decade from the 1930s through the 1980s, Garabedian said. The attorney said he also reached agreements in six other cases across the country, including four in New Jersey.
The agreements carried no admission of liability.
Recent priest abuse settlements
The settlements are the latest reminders of the breadth of the crisis that rocked the archdiocese after the Globe reported in 2002 that abuse had occurred over decades, and that church officials transferred abusive priests to other parishes and routinely hid cases from the public and parishioners.
The Globe’s investigation into the abuse was chronicled in the movie “Spotlight” and earned the newspaper a Pulitzer Prize in 2003…..

Key reports from Globe’s Spotlight team on clergy sex abuse  March 11, 2016
The Boston Globe’s 2001-2002 investigation into sexual abuses by clergy in the Catholic Church resulted in more than 600 stories, with eight Globe reporters playing key roles. The first history-changing report was the work of Spotlight editor Walter V. Robinson, and reporters Sacha Pfeiffer, Michael Rezendes, and Matt Carroll. As the scope of the story widened, four other reporters joined the effort: Stephen Kurkjian, Thomas Farragher, Michael Paulson, and Kevin Cullen.
Here is a sampling of their work:
1. This Globe column by Eileen McNamara got the investigation rolling when new Globe editor Martin Baron read it in July 2001 and asked the Spotlight Team to pursue a wider look at abusive priests and what the church leadership knew.
2. The story that changed everything: The Spotlight Team’s first major report, published Jan. 6, 2002.
3. A few weeks later, the Spotlight Team widened the horrifying picture to include scores of priests.

Massachusetts priest defrocked for sexually abusing minor: archdiocese BOSTON  By Scott Malone  Thu Mar 31, 2016    A suburban Boston priest has been defrocked by the Vatican after an investigation by the Roman Catholic church found him guilty of child sexual abuse, the Boston Archdiocese said on Thursday.
The priest, Thomas H. Maguire, was serving as pastor of Saint Helen Mother of the Emperor Constantine church in Norwell, Massachusetts, about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Boston, when he was accused in 2012 of inappropriate sexual activity with minors. Maguire was suspended from priestly duties at that time.
Police investigated that allegation but did not find evidence of a crime.
However, following the news of Maguire’s suspension, other people came forward to accuse him of sexual abuse dating to the mid-1990s and earlier, the Boston Archdiocese said in a statement.
A probe by church officials into those earlier allegations concluded that Maguire was guilty of abuse of a minor, the archdiocese said.
It was unclear if there was one or more victims, and the earlier incidents were too old to be criminally prosecuted….
The 2015 film “Spotlight,” which chronicled the Globe’s reporting of the clergy sex abuse scandal, earlier this year won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The Vatican unveiled in 2014 that it had defrocked more than 800 priests since the start of the crisis. Insurance experts told a Vatican conference in 2012 that as many as 100,000 U.S. children may have been the victims of clerical sex abuse. Some 12 U.S. dioceses have filed for bankruptcy since the scandal broke, in part due to more than $3 billion in settlements paid to victims. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-massachusetts-priest-idUSKCN0WX2GS

Police chief to step down after force’s handling of child abuse cases criticised
24/03/2016  The chief constable of South Yorkshire has announced plans to step down just hours after another report criticised his force’s past failures to tackle child sexual exploitation (CSE) in Rotherham.  David Crompton, 52, will leave his post in November, according to a one-line statement on the force website and on Twitter. Mr Crompton’s four year tenure as chief constable has been plagued by a series of high profile problems, many of which began well before he joined the force in 2012.
As well as the Rotherham scandal, he has also had to deal with renewed controversy over the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, following the publication of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report in 2012, which led to new inquests. And he has also faced a fresh campaign for an inquiry into police actions at the “Battle of Orgreave” during the 1984 Miner’s Strike. But, as well as these historical matters, Mr Crompton also found himself in the headlines when Sir Cliff Richard’s home was searched in connection with an inquiry into alleged child abuse….
The inquiry led by Professor John Drew repeated many of the criticisms levelled at South Yorkshire Police in the 2014 report by Professor Alexis Jay, which sparked a national scandal when it said at least 1,400 children had been raped, trafficked and abused in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.
The Jay Report outlined how police and social workers knew what was happening but failed to act.
Prof Drew found that, by today’s standards, the scale of response to child sexual exploitation 15 years ago was inadequate across the whole of South Yorkshire, with mistakes and missed opportunities until 2011 due to the low priority given to the crime.
But the professor said the force had made “determined progress” since 2013 and that the police response to safeguarding children and young people from CSE was now adequate and, in some cases, of high quality.
Last month, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) announced it was now looking at more than 194 allegations about the conduct of police relating to child sexual exploitation in Rotherham….

Operation Midland: Child abuse inquiry ends with no charges brought  21 March 2016  UK
A Met Police inquiry into claims a VIP Westminster paedophile ring abused children in the 1970s and 1980s has closed without charges being brought, Scotland Yard has announced.  The controversial Operation Midland ended as ex-MP Harvey Proctor was told he faces no further action over claims against him of child abuse and murder. He called on four Met chiefs to resign, but the force said it had been right to look into the single source claims….
The investigation, which began in November 2014, was triggered by allegations made by a man in his 40s known as “Nick”, who claimed he was abused for nine years from 1975, when he was seven, to 1984. More people came forward to provide information but there was not enough evidence to charge anyone – although there was nothing to prove police had been knowingly misled by a complainant, the Met said in a detailed statement…. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-35863580

Paedophile child psychiatrist revelations – Amnesty demands investigation by UK child abuse inquiry
“It’s too late to save the children abused by Fraser. It’s not too late for the truth to come out.” – Patrick Corrigan
Amnesty International has called again for allegations of involvement by UK security services in child abuse at Kincora Boys’ Home in Northern Ireland to be investigated by the Westminster child abuse inquiry.
The latest Amnesty call comes as a new report reveals that Dr Morris Fraser, a child psychiatrist who has been linked to Kincora, and who was convicted of sexually assaulting a child while working for a Belfast hospital in 1972, was allowed to remain on the British medical register for 24 more years during which he was convicted on abuse charges on two further occasions.
Report author Dr Niall Meehan cites a number of sources linking Dr Fraser to abuse at Kincora Boys’ Home. Allegations have persisted for decades that a paedophile ring at Kincora Boys’ Home in Belfast was linked to the British intelligence services….
Three senior staff at Kincora – William McGrath, Raymond Semple and Joseph Mains – were jailed in 1981 for child abuse, but there have been suggestions of a mass cover-up by MI5, which was rumoured to be protecting high-ranking paedophiles in the military, Civil Service and politics.
One of the child sex abuse victims from Kincora is challenging the home’s exclusion from the inquiry in a judicial review being considered in Belfast High Court. Gary Hoy, who was abused by two of the men who were subsequently convicted, is taking legal action to force a full independent inquiry with the power to compel witnesses and the security services to hand over documents.
The judicial review case has heard allegations that MI5 was involved in covering up the sexual abuse of children in order to protect an intelligence-gathering operation it ran in the 1970s. A decision in the judicial review case is due to be delivered on April 8th.
Government papers disclosed last year revealed that the Belfast boys’ home was at the heart of correspondence involving the security services.
The papers also named former government figures alleged to have been involved in paedophile rings. These include the late Sir William van Straubenzee, who was a government minister in Northern Ireland between 1972-74 when the allegations of a paedophile ring at Kincora were first made; and Sir Peter Hayman, former deputy director of MI6.

‘Sold’ takes a look at the sex trafficking business  By G. Allen Johnson Wednesday, April 13, 2016  There are 5.5 million children — yes, children — who are victims of sex trafficking in the world today. Bay Area filmmaker Jeffrey D. Brown calls attention to the problem in “Sold,” a drama about a 13-year-old Indian girl forced into prostitution, and the American do-gooders (Gillian Anderson, David Arquette) who try and save her.
Filmed in India in 2013 (it debuted at Cinequest in San Jose in 2014, but is only now getting a release), the English-language movie benefits from an appealing central performance by young Niyar Saikia, whose character Lakshmi endures beatings, forced rape and other hardships. Brown, who co-wrote the script based on Patricia McCormick’s 2006 novel, is able to convey the miserable existence and horrible lives of sex trafficking victims without resorting to torture porn. The film does not have a rating, but it seems rather PG-13-ish (there is no nudity and merely the suggestion of sex).
Lakshmi is from a remote village in Nepal, but her family, desperate for money, sells her temporary services for what they think is work as a maid in the big city of Kolkata (once called Calcutta). Instead, her temp agency turns out to be a pimp agency, and she is forced into prostitution…. http://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/Sold-takes-a-look-at-the-sex-trafficking-7246163.php

Lebanon Shocked Over Sex Trafficking of Young Syrian Women By Bassem Mroue, Associated Press BEIRUT  Apr 13, 2016  Back in Syria, the young women were told they would get well-paid jobs at restaurants and hotels in Lebanon. But when they arrived, their belongings and mobile phones were taken away, and the women were locked up in two hotels north of Beirut and forced into prostitution.
What followed was an ordeal of beatings, torture and abuse until Lebanese security forces raided the hotels and dismantled the operation in late March.
The discovery of the sex trafficking ring and the rescue of the women deeply shocked tiny Lebanon, a Mediterranean Arab nation already overwhelmed by the influx of more than a million Syrian refugees who have fled the civil war, and prompted calls for investigation.
The case, which involves 75 female victims, is considered the worst sex trafficking scandal in Lebanon in decades and has raised questions about who might have shielded and enabled such a vast network….
The Syrian women were brought to Lebanon in stages over the past several months. Those who refused to work as prostitutes were repeatedly raped and tortured until they submitted, according to Lebanese women’s rights activists….
Lebanese security officials, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case, estimate the gang was making more than a $1 million a month from the prostitution ring….

Australia’s most shocking statistic: Sexual abuse and domestic violence against women with disabilities March 20, 2016 Jane Rosengrave, 53, is a proud indigenous women who grew up in institutional care and suffered years of sexual abuse and domestic violence.  Ginger Gorman
Jane has an intellectual disability, and over her lifetime she’s suffered unrelenting sexual and physical abuse by six different male perpetrators. She is far from alone. On the contrary, 90 per cent of intellectually disabled women in Australia have been sexually abused. Read that again. Ninety per cent. It’s a shocking statistic made worse by the fact that most of the abuse happens when the victims are children.  For Jane, the sexual abuse started when she was just six years old. At the time, Jane was a ward of the state living at Pleasant Creek Training Centre in the Victorian town of Stawell. The facility operated from 1937 until 1999 and housed children and young adults with intellectual disabilities….

Alleged child predators caught in undercover April Fools sex sting Apr 6th 2016
While millions across the country were using social media to harmlessly prank their friends and family last week, police in Florida took to the dark corners of the Internet to uncover and stop alleged would-be child sex offenders.
The undercover child sex sting caught 18 men arranging sexual encounters with children.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd released the results of “Operation April’s Fools” on Tuesday.
“These freaks and these deviants are looking for our children every day online,” Judd said at a news conference. “They worked in all different lines of business, and they had one thing in common: they’re child predators.”
Investigators said the men had arranged to have sex with children from 10 to 14-years-old.
Undercover detectives nabbed the men by luring them with fictitious ads or profiles on social media, websites and phone applications, pretending to be either children or their custodians.
Despite prior coverage of past events, multiple men responded to and engaged with the undercover detectives, and officials divulged some of the most shocking details of those alleged encounters….

On Wednesday, the trial begins of a 54-year-old teacher accused of sexually abusing 10 children in what are alleged to be guesthouses run illegally by two Islamic foundations –  one of which, the Ensar Foundation, has close links to the Turkish government. According to the indictment, the assaults started in 2012 and continued until last year. The children say they were aged between 10 and 12 years old when they were first abused. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36071773

Docs: Jared Fogle texts show pursuit of young victims By Crimesider Staff CBS News April 19, 2016  INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Text messages sent between prostitutes and Jared Fogle are the focal point of documents filed Monday in response to the former Subway pitchman’s appeal of his 15-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
Jared Fogle reveals how he lured minors in secret recordings
Fogle’s attorneys have argued that the sentence handed down in November 2015 was too harsh. Prosecutors sought a 12 1/2-year sentence, while Fogle’s attorneys asked for five years. Fogle claims he was punished, in part, for what amounted to “fantasies.” But the government said in its Monday filing that Fogle’s explanation is inaccurate.
“Fogle’s ‘fantasies’ were grounded in reality, in that he fantasized about and sought actively to repeat what he had already done, i.e., pay minors for sex,” prosecutors wrote.
The government cited text messages it said proves that Fogle developed relationships with adult escorts “and offered them finder’s fees to provide him with access to minors.”
“I’ll pay you big for a 14- or 15-year-old,” he texted one escort.
In another conversation, he asked for “young girls or boys” and said he’d pay at least $400 if they could prove their age….

Judge Allows A CIA Torture Lawsuit To Move Forward For The First Time
The three men at the heart of the case were beaten, held in coffin-sized boxes, and hung from metal rods.
04/22/2016 Jessica Schulberg    Foreign Affairs Reporter, The Huffington Post
SPOKANE, Wash. — A federal judge indicated Friday he will deny a request from two CIA-contracted psychologists to throw out a lawsuit filed on behalf of three victims of the agency’s now-defunct enhanced interrogation program.
“I don’t think I have any other choice,” said Senior Judge Justin L. Quackenbush of the Eastern District of Washington, indicating that he would allow the case to move forward despite objections from the psychologists’ lawyers, who claimed their clients are immune from civil liability.
The decision was a landmark victory for the American Civil Liberties Union, the group representing Suleiman Abdullah Salim and Mohamed Ahmed Ben Soud, as well as the family of Gul Rahman, who died in CIA custody in 2002. The ACLU is seeking damages for their clients from the two psychologists, who they allege in their complaint “designed, implemented, and personally administered an experimental torture program for the [CIA].”
“This has never happened before,” Hina Shamsi, an ACLU lawyer on the case, told reporters outside the courtroom after the hearing. She and her team didn’t expect the judge to make a decision on whether to scrap the case so quickly and appeared genuinely surprised that he ruled in their favor.
“There have been so many cases brought by torture victims … and not one of them has been able to go forward, for shameful reasons,” Shamsi said. “This is a very big deal for our clients.”
The three men represented by the ACLU were identified in the Senate’s 500-page executive summary of a 6,000-page report on the CIA’s “enhanced interrogation program” as being exposed to brutal interrogation methods that constitute torture. They were waterboarded, beaten, hung from metal rods, held in coffin-sized boxes, and deprived of light, food, and sleep….
The Senate report refers to psychologists James Elmer Mitchell and John “Bruce” Jessen using pseudonyms, and describes their integral role in creating and executing an interrogation program that taught prisoners “learned helplessness” by exposing them to uncontrollable pain. The duo’s company received $81 million from the CIA for the work on the interrogation program.
Spokane….it’s where Mitchell and Jessen, who both taught U.S. soldiers survival, evasion, resistance and escape techniques at the nearby Fairchild Air Force Base, set up shop when they contracted with the intelligence agency….
Although President Barack Obama outlawed the use of torture early in his administration, he has declined to prosecute individuals responsible for creating and implementing the torture program operated by the CIA between 2002 and 2007, setting a precedent of immunity for those involved.
The U.S. government has blocked past efforts by the ACLU to sue individuals and entities for actions related to CIA torture by arguing that the lawsuits risked exposing state secrets. Judges dismissed those prior cases, ruling in a way that Ladin described Friday as “overly deferential” to the government…. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/cia-torture-lawsuit_us_571a8fdbe4b0d0042da94ac0

Out of the Darkness
How two psychologists teamed up with the CIA to devise a torture program and experiment on human beings.  ….For more than a month, Suleiman endured an incessant barrage of torture techniques designed to psychologically destroy him. His torturers repeatedly doused him with ice-cold water. They beat him and slammed him into walls. They hung him from a metal rod, his toes barely touching the floor. They chained him in other painful stress positions for days at a time. They starved him, deprived him of sleep, and stuffed him inside small boxes. With the torture came terrifying interrogation sessions in which he was grilled about what he was doing in Somalia and the names of people, all but one of whom he’d never heard of.
After four or five weeks of this relentless pain and suffering, Suleiman’s torturers assessed him as psychologically broken and incapable of resisting them. Suleiman could take no more. He decided to end his life by consuming painkillers he had stockpiled. But as he began to take the pills, guards stormed into his cell to stop him. He was then shackled, hooded, and driven a short distance to another CIA prison close by — a prison Suleiman came to know as the “Salt Pit.” Although Suleiman’s torture would continue for many years more, the very worst of it was over.
Anatomy of an Abduction
A year and two months later, the CIA handed Suleiman over to the U.S. military, which imprisoned him at Bagram, also in Afghanistan. Finally, in 2008, after more than five years in U.S. custody, with no charges ever leveled against him, he was sent home with a document confirming he posed no threat to the United States. His family had heard nothing of him since his disappearance, and they had presumed him dead.
But even once home in his native Zanzibar, Suleiman felt far from free. Constant flashbacks transported him back to his torture at the hands of his CIA captors. After years of near-starvation he was unable to eat normally. He suffered splitting headaches and pain throughout his body from the torture. Prolonged isolation left him unaccustomed to human interaction. Despite repeated attempts, he couldn’t find Magida. Unable to sleep due to the torment of his memories and the physical pain, he found limited solace playing with his family’s rabbits in the middle of the night….
Suleiman’s trauma is not just a consequence of his ordeal in American prisons. It was the CIA’s goal, through a program designed and executed by two psychologists the agency contracted to run its torture operations, to break his mind. Integral to the program was the idea that once a detainee had been psychologically destroyed through torture, he would become compliant and cooperate with interrogators’ demands. The theory behind the goal had never been scientifically tested because such trials would violate human experimentation bans established after Nazi experiments and atrocities during World War II. Yet that theory would drive an experiment in some of the worst systematic brutality ever inflicted on detainees in modern American history. Today, three of the many victims and survivors of that experiment are seeking justice through a lawsuit against the men who designed and implemented that program for the CIA.
Mitchell and Jessen were two former U.S. military psychologists contracted by the CIA to design, develop, and run the agency’s detention, rendition, and interrogation operations. As psychologists in the U.S. military’s Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) program, the two men had devoted their careers to training U.S. troops to resist abusive treatment in case of capture by governments that violate the Geneva Conventions. SERE teaches resistance by subjecting students to carefully controlled versions of harsh techniques used by China, North Korea, and the former Soviet Union, often to extract false confessions from captives for propaganda purposes. During training, psychologists like Mitchell and Jessen are on hand to monitor trainees’ psychological well-being and to ensure that SERE instructors don’t go too far.
But Mitchell and Jessen intensified and manipulated SERE techniques so they bore little relation to those used on SERE recruits. Whereas SERE training was intended to help strengthen the resolve of American recruits, Mitchell and Jessen’s techniques were designed to achieve the exact opposite result: to break detainees and turn their minds into putty in interrogators’ hands….
Mitchell and Jessen were interested in applying the psychological concept of “learned helplessness” to interrogation. Psychologist Martin Seligman pioneered studies on the phenomenon in experiments he conducted on dogs in the 1960s. Seligman used the term “learned helplessness” to describe the state of utter passivity prompted by a series of negative events that leads subjects to believe there is nothing they can do to escape their suffering. Seligman conducted his experiments by administering electric shocks to different groups of dogs. When given the chance to avoid their pain, the dogs in his experiment that had been able to escape the shocks did so quickly. Those that couldn’t stop the pain didn’t even try to avoid it, even when given the opportunity. They believed they had no ability to control their fates. They had learned helplessness.
Mitchell and Jessen posited that this theory could be applied to interrogation — that harsh measures could be used to break any resistance of al-Qaida captives by inducing a state of learned helplessness. Torture would “shape compliance” with interrogation, Mitchell and Jessen theorized. Once detainees were abused to the point of learned helplessness, resistance would crumble, and the detainees would divulge information that they might otherwise withhold.
No legitimate science backs up this assumption. Research on inducing a sustained state of learned helplessness in humans through abuse, or on the role of learned helplessness in eliciting truthful information, does not exist for the simple reason that it can’t be legally or ethically conducted….
The CIA program violated not only international and U.S. prohibitions on torture — it also violated the well-established ban on non-consensual human experimentation. The Nuremburg Code, in place since 1947, was the basis for the prosecution and convictions of World War II Nazi doctors. It forbids any research on human subjects without their informed consent. Numerous other treaties and ethics codes include similar bans, recognizing that any experimentation, however benign, on human subjects without their consent or on prisoners, is inherently cruel, inhuman, or degrading.
Mitchell and Jessen, however, were undeterred by law, ethics, or the lessons of history. The torture program they designed and implemented at the behest of the CIA by its very design required ongoing experimentation on its human subjects. They did not know how the detainees would react to the torture techniques they devised, or if the detainees would even survive them. They did not know whether and how much torture would be needed to induce learned helplessness in a particular detainee, or whether once a detainee’s mind was broken, he would produce truthful information. They had, after all, adapted the torture techniques from those used by authoritarian regimes to extract false confessions….
After weeks of debate, and over objections from the State Department, President George W. Bush ultimately issued the final word on the matter. In a February 2002 memo, he stated that al-Qaida and Taliban detainees were not protected by the Geneva Conventions….
Mitchell and Jessen made out handsomely too. From 2001 until 2005, as consultants to the CIA, they made $1.5 and $1.1 million, respectively. In 2005, they formed a company, Mitchell, Jessen & Associates, to supply the CIA with more personnel to help implement and expand their program. Until the termination in 2010 of the CIA’s contract with Mitchell, Jessen & Associates, the company received $81 million for its torture services, financed by the American taxpayer….

FORCEPS Poems About The Birth of The Self    The search for my true past came in distinct waves. This collection of poems includes some from the long period when I knew something was drastically wrong but didn’t consciously know what that was and some from the breakthrough when I discovered my never-bloomed self. The poems cover the outskirts of my awakening, my plowing through and arrival in the middle of awareness. When dissociated memories and emotions exploded inside, eventually they filtered into a poem. The horror transmuted itself. These poems are that record. I have regained a real, not imposed, self. Karnac Books  March 2016     ISBN 13 : 9781782204107    ISBN 10 : 1782204105

Common Forms of Misinformation and Tactics of Disinformation about Psychotherapy for Trauma Originating in Ritual Abuse and Mind Control By Ellen Lacter, Ph.D., December 18, 2012.
from http://endritualabuse.org/activism/misinfo/
This page on my website seeks to expose a number of common forms of misinformation and tactics of disinformation about psychotherapy for trauma originating in ritual abuse and mind control. Disinformation is distinguished from misinformation in that it is intentionally fraudulent.
Misinformation and disinformation about ritual abuse and mind control trauma and psychotherapy to treat such trauma appear in both paper and electronic media, but are particularly abundant on the Internet on websites of individuals and organizations, bookseller reviews, blogs, newsletters, online encyclopedias, social networking sites, and e-group listservs.

1977 Senate Hearing on MKULTRA  Prepared Statement of CIA Director Stansfield Turner
Prepared Statement of Admiral Stansfield Turner, Director of Central Intelligence
Mr. Chairman: In my letter to you of July 15, 1977, I reported our recent discovery of seven boxes of documents related to Project MKULTRA, a closely held CIA project conducted from 1953-1964. As you may recall, MKULTRA was an “umbrella project” under which certain sensitive subprojects were funded, involving among other things research on drugs and behavioral modification. During the Rockefeller Commission and Church Committee investigations in 1975, the cryptonym became publicly known when details of the drug-related death of Dr. Frank Olsen were publicized. In 1953 Dr. Olsen, a civilian employee of the Army at Fort Detrick, leaped to his death from a hotel room window in New York City about a week after having unwittingly consumed LSD administered to him as an experiment at a meeting of LSD researchers called by CIA.
Most of what was known about the Agency’s involvement with behavioral drugs during the investigations in 1975 was contained in a report on Project MKULTRA prepared by the Inspector General’s office in 1963. As a result of that report’s recommendations, unwitting testing of drugs on U.S. citizens was subsequently discontinued….
First, there are 149 MKULTRA subprojects, many of which appear to have some connection with research into behavioral modification, drug acquisition and testing or administering drugs surreptitiously….
2. Research on hypnosis: 8 subprojects, including 2 involving hypnosis and drugs in combination….

Paramedics laud PTSD legislation  By Cheryl Browne, Barrie Examiner  Wednesday, April 6, 2016
….Harris was one of the first responders who arrived at the Travelodge in Barrie May 2, 2012, to attend to a man suffering from self-inflicted wounds, as well as the two nearly decapitated women in the hotel room with him. Twenty-four-year-old Mark Dobson was charged and convicted of killing his girlfriend, Mary Hepburn, 32, and their friend, Helen Dorrington, 52, of Cold Lake, Alta., during a satanic ritual.
Harris said she suffered from nightmares and night terrors and tried to drown her pain with alcohol. After she attended Dobson’s murder trial and the funeral for a paramedic on the same day, she tried to end her life. She failed and, in doing so, finally got the support she required. Once she stopped drinking and began learning yoga and attending the Buddhist Centre, she began to heal…..

Dobson found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder Thursday, January 15, 2015
A judge has found Mark Dobson guilty for the satanic cult killings of two women at the Travelodge in Barrie in May of 2012.
The judge called the murders of Mary Hepburn and Helen Dorrington grotesque and found Dobson criminally responsible in both counts of first degree murder on Thursday….
The court heard that in May 2012, Dobson slit the women’s throats in what was supposed to be a satanic suicide pack that didn’t go as planned. The three had met on the ‘Joy of Satan’ website and believed they would reunite on another planet. Sonya Hepburn says she was shocked when she learned of the satanic beliefs.
“There were no indications, none what so ever,” added Hepburn.
The defence argued Dobson should be found be found not criminally responsible because he suffered from schizophrenia at the time.
Justice J.A. Watt acknowledged Dobson probably suffered from schizophrenia for years but said when he killed the women he appreciated that it was morally wrong.
“On its own, a mental disorder does not exempt anyone from criminal responsibility,” said Justice Watt in court.
Justice Watt also pointed out that Dobson understood the results and the consequences of his actions when he admitted to killing the women to emergency responders at the scene and also in an interview the next day with police when Dobson said he thought he would get life in jail or the death penalty…..

Zambia police arrest four suspects for ritual murders that sparked riots  Reuters World May 10, 2016  LUSAKA (Reuters) – Zambia police said on Tuesday four suspects have been arrested in connection with a string of grisly ritual murders in the southern African nation’s capital that triggered anti-foreign riots targeting mostly Rwandan migrants in April.
The arrested suspects are two army soldiers, a civilian employee of the Zambian Air Force and a traditional doctor, police said. They were to appear in court Tuesday afternoon charged with seven counts of murder.
“All the murders which the accused have been charged with were committed in a similar manner by crushing the left side of the head, removing body parts and later dumping the deceased near their homes,” police said in a statement.
Police said in April that the victims had ears, hearts and genitals removed, raising suspicion of ritual killings.
Human body parts are sometimes used in traditional remedies and concoctions in southern Africa. The practice is linked to witchcraft beliefs….

MKs bid to tackle ‘harmful cults’ that ensnare 20,000 Israelis. But it’s not so simple. From polygamous sexual predators to the ‘Jewish Taliban,’ sects draw in large numbers of susceptible adherents. Will new legislation break the spell? Or does it go too far, threatening religious freedom?
By Marissa Newman February 22, 2016
….a new bill proposed by Knesset member Orly Levy-Abekasis of the Yisrael Beytenu party, which has the coalition’s support and passed its preliminary reading in the Knesset on Wednesday.
The bill would for the first time in Israel’s history enshrine in law a definition of a “harmful cult,” and allow the courts to jail cult leaders for up to 10 years and seize their assets. But, in its current formulation, which will still likely be revised before it is brought to the three votes needed to pass it into law, there is one caveat: it would only apply to cult leaders who committed other crimes, thus compounding their sentences. This stipulation ensures that religious leaders won’t face prosecution merely upon allegations of “cult-like” features. It also won’t help people like L., who needed therapy after leaving her community….
The bill defines a cult as a group that “rallies around a person or an idea, in a way that there is exploitation, dependency, authority, or emotional distress experienced by one or more members, uses methods of controlling mental processes or patterns of behavior, and operates in an organized, systematic, and sustained fashion, while committing crimes under Israeli law that are felonies or sexual offenses or serious violence.”

According to the director of the Israeli Center for Cult Victims, there are some 100 cults active in Israel, with 15,000-20,000 adults and 3,000 children in their ranks.
Rachel Lichtenstein, the director of the Israeli Center for Cult Victims, says what makes a group a cult is never ideology, but rather the techniques of control exercised by its leader. The criteria she lists include having a leader at the center, emotional, psychological, and occasionally economic exploitation, social sanctions and humiliation, isolation of members from their families, surveillance, and more. The group gathers testimony and, once it receives a number of reliable accounts (she stresses the organization will never rely on a single account), it will classify some groups as cults. (The organization identifies the Harish group as a cult, based on the testimonies of 15 families who left)….
The bill marks the first time the anti-cult efforts have reached Israel’s legislature (countries such as France and Belgium have anti-cult laws)….
Can you lose your free will?
While entrenched in the cult, you are “not operating out of free will,” maintains L. After receiving complaints, the ISKCON umbrella group for Hare Krishna at one point intervened and representatives conceded to her that there was a problem. The organization sent in other teachers, gave the leader a warning, and kept tabs on the group, but L. maintains their response – which she says strengthened her resolve to leave — was insufficient. “I think they needed to tell everyone there, listen there’s a problem here. They didn’t do that.”
While she was in the group, L. says, there was a certain amount of control over her mental faculties. “There are people who will say it doesn’t exist, but of course it does.”….

Germany Expresses Regret Over Failure to Stop Child Abuse at Nazi Nurse’s Commune  by Andy Eckardt Apr 27 2016  MAINZ, Germany — Germany’s foreign ministry acknowledged Tuesday that its diplomats “looked away” and failed to prevent child abuse at a commune founded by a Nazi pedophile in Chile. Paul Schaefer — a Nazi nurse who became a preacher — set up the secretive Colonia Dignidad commune in Chile after fleeing Germany for South America in 1961. He died in a Chilean prison in 2010 at the age of 89 while serving a 20-year sentence for child abuse, arms possession and human-rights violations. Children who lived at the Colonia Dignidad commune testified at trials of colony leaders about being sexually abused, enslaved and separated from their parents. On Tuesday, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier publicly expressed regret over any role his ministry had in the decades-long scandal. “Over the course of many years, from the 60s to the 80s, German diplomats at best looked away,” Steinmeier said….
At its height in the 70s and 80s, Colonia Dignidad had some 300 Chilean and German residents. Most worked as farmers at the commune, which was guarded by barbed wire and watchtowers….

‘Satanic’ sergeant suspended for posting degrading slurs before Greens MP Jenny Leong harassed
April 17, 2016   Eamonn Duff  Police officers were posting homophobic and sexually degrading posts on social media before a NSW Police Integrity Commission investigation homed in on the racial and sexist harassment of an MP.
A Sun-Herald investigation can also reveal that one of the ringleaders behind the online trolling of the Greens MP Jenny Leong is an inner-city based sergeant who for years has spouted a string of anti-gay slurs and online comments that objectified and sexually degraded women.
After viewing material linked to his Facebook account on Saturday, the NSW Police released a statement advising it had “acted to immediately suspend” the Central Metropolitan Region officer.
It is now apparent that far from being an isolated, politically motivated online attack, the recent hate campaign against Ms Leong was part of a culture of abuse within certain elements of the force.
Until the sergeant’s Facebook page was shut down last week, it was a public window into the private world of a trusted protector of the community.
Harbouring a morbid fascination with the devil, the officer had uploaded numerous satanic images onto his social media feed and was one of nine followers of a Facebook page that shares images of mutilated corpses.
“I love evil and being evil. It’s who I am,” he said after posting an image of Satan in 2013, adding: “I just love the picture and what it stands for. EVIL”.
In 2013 he was engaging in public posts, with another police officer, that depicted women as sexual objects. The comments are too vulgar to publish….

Former members of polygamist sect led by Warren Jeffs reveal secrets in FBI documents
April 5, 2016 by CNN
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A decade after the arrest of polygamous prophet Warren Jeffs, insiders say his church has literally become a place of feast or famine, of haves and have-nots.
Prison has done little to loosen Jeffs’ hold on many of his followers, even if he is now a convicted child-sex offender serving a life sentence. They still await his revelations and follow his directives, both difficult and bizarre.
But some members are leaving the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints — and disobeying their prophet’s longstanding orders to avoid law enforcement and “answer them nothing.”
These FLDS outcasts are talking to the FBI.
They include the former cooks and drivers for the Jeffs family, as well as ex-wives and others who hovered close to the church leaders and their power center. Their words fill hundreds of pages of freshly filed federal court documents, bringing outsiders into the cloistered world of the FLDS like never before.
According to these breakaway members, the FLDS of 2016 has a pecking order: There are the elite church leaders and chosen followers, and everyone else….
The prophet — and there is little doubt Warren Jeffs is still the FLDS prophet — chooses who will be included in the United Order. His brothers, Lyle and Seth, serve as “bishops” and carry out the prophet’s wishes at FLDS compounds along the Utah-Arizona border and in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
The cook, Allene Jeffs Steed, told the FBI last year that while she prepared feasts of lobster and shrimp for the bishop, her own children “lived off toast.” She used duct tape to hold her kids’ shoes together. And hers wasn’t the only FLDS family to go without.
“We were literally starving,” Sheryl Barlow told the FBI in February. She lived in a house with 40 people and said they subsisted on noodles, brown rice, tomato juice and, when they were lucky, bread or a few containers of yogurt….
He was sentenced in August 2011 to life in prison in Texas, convicted of sexually assaulting two girls, 12 and 15, who he considered his “spiritual brides.” An audiotape of the prophet having sex with the 12-year-old was among the most damning evidence at his trial.
With establishment of the United Order, the old Phelps elementary school in Hildale, which closed in 2002 after the prophet ordered all FLDS children home-schooled, was rebranded as Jeffs Academy. Here, followers turned in all their wordly goods for “consecration” in the bishop’s storehouse across the street. They attended “trainings” to learn how to be worthy of eternal salvation and emerged rebaptized as members of the United Order…..

British girls as young as 10 face harm from breast ironing with stones heated on hot coals in ritual imported from west Africa
The process uses stones, a hammer or a spatula heated over hot coals to mutilate the breast tissue and make the adolescent look less ‘womanly’
Belief is it discourages unwanted male attention and premarital pregnancy
Breast ironing originated in Cameroon, where one in four are affected
Tory MP Jake Berry said he was shocked to learn girls in west African communities in Birmingham and London were victims as well
By Thomas Burrows for MailOnline  26 March 2016
Around 1,000 British girls face harm from the ‘abhorrent’ practice of breast ironing, ministers have warned.
In the brutal procedure, hot objects [stones, a hammer or a spatula] are used to pound and beat girls’ breasts to stop them growing in the belief it makes them less desirable and discourages premarital pregnancy.
Breast ironing originated in Cameroon, where it affects as many as one in four.
It also takes place in Nigeria, Benin and Chad. This week Jake Berry, the Conservative MP for Rossendale & Darwen, said he was shocked to learn girls in west African communities in Birmingham and London were victims too.
It is very difficult to spot as most of the perpetrators were the victims’ own mothers.

Texas man who killed boy, drank his blood executed
Vasquez has appealed his execution  By Holly Yan CNN  04/06 2016
Pablo Vasquez, a Texas man who killed a 12-year-old boy in 1998 and reportedly drank his blood after a satanic calling, was executed Wednesday, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice announced.
“I am sorry to David’s family. This is only way that I can be forgiven. You got your justice right here,” Vasquez said. Vasquez, 38, had appealed his execution, but a stay was denied and he was put to death at 6:35 p.m.  Vasquez was convicted of killing 12-year-old David Cardenas in Donna, Texas, 18 years ago. Authorities said Vasquez and his cousin met the boy at a party.
On the night of April 18, 1998, “Vasquez struck the victim in the head with a piece of pipe and a shovel,” the Department of Criminal Justice said. “The victim’s body was buried behind a residence. … Vasquez took a ring and a necklace from the victim.”….
Vasquez told police in a videotaped interview that he drank the boy’s blood, according to The Monitor newspaper in South Texas.  “The blood was dripping, and (I) got it all over my face, so I don’t know. I mean, something just told me drink,” Vasquez said, according to a transcript of the statement.
Vasquez said he tried to cut off the boy’s head, according to The Monitor. A detective asked Vasquez why.  “The devil was telling me to take it away from, to keep it, keep it, couldn’t come off,” Vasquez said. “I was just freaking out cause I was hearing that.”…. http://www.mypanhandle.com/news/texas-to-execute-12yearold-boys-killer

Malawi: Satanic Cult Sex Offender Jailed 18 Years – Student Tells Malawi Court He Indulged in Occult
9 May 2016 Nyasa Times (Leeds) By Maurice Nkawihe
There were shocking revelations when Mzuzu Second Grade Magistrate convicted and imposed jail term on Chibavi Community Day Secondary student Peter Mhango for repeatedly defiling an eight-year-old girl.
Mhango was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour on Wednesday last week, but shocked the court when he revealed that he was a member of a Satanic sex cult and that his under-dealings were a fulfillment of a covenant with the devil.
It was revealed in court that Mhango had been defiling the girl, who happen to be a relation, on several occasions between 2015 and 2016….
The victim’s friend then reported to her grandmother and revealed that Mhango had been having cult sex sessions with her friend (the victim). When the victim was quizzed on the issue she admitted. The matter was reported to Luwinga Police who referred the victim to Mzuzu Central Hospital. Medical report indicated defilement has been taking place.
Mhango voluntarily pleaded guilty to the charge.
However, it was during mitigation that Mhango revealed that he had been defiling the victim in order to feed the spiritual demon which has been tormenting him since he was in standard five.
He said defiling children was a fulfillment of the covenant he made when he joined the Satanic Cult….

“Kots Kaal Pato” ritual of animal murdering is finally banned  By Yucatan Times  Wed, Mar 23rd, 2016   Almost one year after the online magazine Vice published an article about an unknown tradition practiced in a small town in Yucatan: “Kots Kaal Pato”, this barbaric practice has been finally prohibited by the local and state authorities.
This ritual that takes place in the town of Citilcum involved filling up piñatas with small animals, like iguanas, birds, kittens and possums, and beating them to dead….
Local animal shelters and pro animal defense groups took notice immediately and began to collect signatures through the Change.org website in order to ban this barbaric tradition. The online petition reached more than 750,000 signatures from around the world and even Mexican celebrities, like Eugenio Derbez and Sasha Sokol, helped gathered signatures through twitter. However, the government kept silent and it seemed there was no finding a solution.
Finally, with the help of the Humane Society International (HSI), local church members, pro animal defense groups, animal shelters, and the Municipality of Izamal, Kots Kaal Pato will be officially banned on April 23, almost a year after the article was published in Vice (May, 2015). As part of the agreement with HIS, authorities will only promote the organization of traditions in which no animals will be injured or killed….

Officials probe ‘Satanic’ animal sacrifices on Long Island  By Dean Balsamini March 13, 2016
The Suffolk County SPCA is probing whether a satanic cult has been beheading goats and chickens on Long Island for the past two years.
Officials also believe the recent torture of a 7-month-old pit bull found hanging from a tree last month may be part of a gang initiation rite.
“Animal abuse is widespread. We’ve found them in all areas of the county,” Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross told The Post.
Suffolk County SPCA Capt. Paul Llobel said several incidents “may be tied to religious and satanic ritual. There’s a lot going on here right now….
The Suffolk SPCA held a training class on ritualistic animal sacrifice and the occult at the county Police Academy last August.
Representatives from Long Island law enforcement heard guest speaker Marcos Quinones, author of “The Goddess of Death: La Santa Muerte and Satan: An Intelligence Report” and a recognized cult expert with the FBI. In July, the SPCA put out a call for “humane investigators” in the wake of the animal sacrifices….  http://nypost.com/2016/03/13/officials-probe-satanic-animal-sacrifices-on-long-island/

Scientists find evidence of ‘anti-memories’, and it could change our understanding of neuroscience
Unmasking the process that silences dormant memories. PETER DOCKRILL 6 APR 2016
At one point or another, we’ve all experienced something that we’d rather forget, so it’s a good thing our brains aren’t designed to hold onto every single memory forever. If they did, we might never be able to store new, more important information, such as the names of new people you meet or where you parked your car.
But at the level of the neuron, what regulates our ability to store and recall information? New research suggests one of the processes involved is ‘anti-memories’ – connections between neurons that generate the exact opposite pattern of electrical activity to that of the original memory.
The ‘anti-memories’ hypothesis comes back to the idea that healthy brain function results from the interaction between two types of brain cells: excitatory and inhibitory neurons. Like the names suggest, the excitatory neurons excite electrical activity in our brains, while inhibitory neurons suppress it….
To examine this, the researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and other techniques to take a detailed look at the brain activity of volunteers. The participants were introduced to pairs of shapes, which helped them to form associative memories of the pairs.
“Over 24 hours, the shape associations in the brain became silent. That could have been because the brain was rebalanced or it could simply be that the associations were forgotten,” said neuroscientist Helen Barron from the University of Oxford.
“So the following day, some of the volunteers undertook additional tests to confirm that the silencing was a consequence of rebalancing. If the memories were present but silenced by inhibitory replicas, we thought that it should be possible to re-express the memories by suppressing inhibitory activity.”
Using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to apply a low current of electricity to the participants’ brains, the team was able to suppress the concentration of certain neurochemicals in the brain, including GABA, which is linked to inhibition. By doing this, they reduced the activity of the anti-memory inhibitory neurons, which meant the memories of the shape associations were re-expressed and came back to the volunteers.
“‘We have shown that reducing cortical inhibition can unmask silent memories,” said Barron. “This result is consistent with a balancing mechanism – the increase in excitation seen in learning and memory formation, when excitatory connections are strengthened, appears to be balanced out by a strengthening of inhibitory connections. From this we can infer that memories are stored in balanced E/I cortical ensembles.”….

….We show that associated stimuli exhibit fMRI repetition suppression in cortex immediately after learning. The magnitude of this cross-stimulus suppression correlates with memory performance measured behaviorally, suggesting that it reflects expression of cortical memory. This cortical memory expression reduces over time and is absent the following day. Cortical memory can however be re-exposed by reduction in local GABA concentrations, induced using tDCS. The extent to which the memory is re-expressed occurs in proportion to the induced GABA reduction. By embedding memories in a spiking network model of memory formation (Vogels and Abbott, 2009, Vogels et al., 2011) and replicating each experimental step in silico, we show that these data are consistent with the balancing of memories via inhibitory synaptic plasticity in cortex.

Recorded child sex abuse cases increase by more than 30%   Police believe that while it is true more victims are coming forwards there is also an increase in abuse driven by technology – and 80% of the abuse is of girls   Vikram Dodd Police and crime correspondent   Tuesday 8 March 2016   Cases of recorded child sexual abuse increased by more than 30% last year, figures suggest. Police chiefs fear the rise is being driven by predators searching online for victims.  A total of 45,456 child sexual offences were recorded across the United Kingdom last year, an average of 124 a day. Nearly 11,000 victims were under 10 years old and 2,409 were aged five or under, according to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), which surveyed every UK police force using Freedom of Information laws. Chief constable Simon Bailey, who is in charge of combating child sexual abuse in England and Wales, told the Guardian that the increase was caused by an increase in attacks, not just because victims were more willing to trust the police and report them….
Campaigners and police estimate only one in eight sexual attacks on a child is reported. The NSPCC’s figures indicate that there were 32,675 sexual attacks or assaults on girls, compared with 8,387 on boys, meaning young females were four times more likely to be victims. Alan Wardle, head of policy at the NSPCC, said: “Child sexual abuse is about abuse of power. Victims are cowed into silence. They are told they will not be believed, that it was their fault. The internet has given predators the opportunity to find and abuse children in a new way….

Child Abuse Victim Kept in a Cage Tells Her Story of Survival Tracy Lehr, KEYT – KCOY – KKFX Reporter Mar 08, 2016 CAMARILLO, Calif. A child abuse survivor who was kept in a cage said she doesn’t dwell on the past. Cynthia Vasquez said she has gotten positive feedback since her story first aired. Vasquez, 19, works at Casa Pacifica in Camarillo, the same center that helped her after she was abused and neglected by a foster parent who adopted her and her little sister. Casa Pacifica CEO Steve Elson said she was one of the worst cases they’ve seen. “It was horrendous what she and her sister went through,” Elson said. Vicki Murphy, Casa Pacifica’s Chief Advancement Officer said, “This is a little girl that came to us from a cage, she had lived in an animal cage.” Her foster mother Sylvia Jovanna Vasquez was a social worker and daycare provider who avoided scrutiny for years. Cynthia said Vasquez changed their names, but she is in no rush to have it legally changed back. During her Santa Barbara trial in 2007, Sylvia Jovanna Vasquez blamed parenting books. Vasquez spent less than a year in jail. After a decade of therapy Cynthia said, “I have a job, a car, I’m going to college, I graduated high school having missed four grades. I’ve worked hard to get to where I am and I’m happy.”…. http://www.keyt.com/news/child-abuse-survivor-doesnt-dwell-on-the-past/38395826

Risks of harm from spanking confirmed by analysis of 5 decades of research
Date:     April 25, 2016   Source:     University of Texas at Austin  Summary:      The more children are spanked, the more likely they are to defy their parents and to experience increased anti-social behavior, aggression, mental health problems and cognitive difficulties, according to a new meta-analysis of 50 years of research on spanking.
The more children are spanked, the more likely they are to defy their parents and to experience increased anti-social behavior, aggression, mental health problems and cognitive difficulties, according to a new meta-analysis of 50 years of research on spanking by experts at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Michigan.
The study, published in this month’s Journal of Family Psychology, looks at five decades of research involving over 160,000 children. The researchers say it is the most complete analysis to date of the outcomes associated with spanking, and more specific to the effects of spanking alone than previous papers, which included other types of physical punishment in their analyses.
“Our analysis focuses on what most Americans would recognize as spanking and not on potentially abusive behaviors,” says Elizabeth Gershoff, an associate professor of human development and family sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. “We found that spanking was associated with unintended detrimental outcomes and was not associated with more immediate or long-term compliance, which are parents’ intended outcomes when they discipline their children.”
Gershoff and co-author Andrew Grogan-Kaylor, an associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work, found that spanking (defined as an open-handed hit on the behind or extremities) was significantly linked with 13 of the 17 outcomes they examined, all in the direction of detrimental outcomes.
“The upshot of the study is that spanking increases the likelihood of a wide variety of undesired outcomes for children. Spanking thus does the opposite of what parents usually want it to do,” Grogan-Kaylor says.
Gershoff and Grogan-Kaylor tested for some long-term effects among adults who were spanked as children. The more they were spanked, the more likely they were to exhibit anti-social behavior and to experience mental health problems. They were also more likely to support physical punishment for their own children, which highlights one of the key ways that attitudes toward physical punishment are passed from generation to generation.
The researchers looked at a wide range of studies and noted that spanking was associated with negative outcomes consistently and across all types of studies, including those using the strongest methodologies such as longitudinal or experimental designs. As many as 80 percent of parents around the world spank their children, according to a 2014 UNICEF report. Gershoff notes that this persistence of spanking is in spite of the fact that there is no clear evidence of positive effects from spanking and ample evidence that it poses a risk of harm to children’s behavior and development.
Both spanking and physical abuse were associated with the same detrimental child outcomes in the same direction and nearly the same strength.
“We as a society think of spanking and physical abuse as distinct behaviors,” she says. “Yet our research shows that spanking is linked with the same negative child outcomes as abuse, just to a slightly lesser degree.” https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/04/160425143106.htm

Spanking and Child Outcomes: Old Controversies and New Meta-Analyses.
Gershoff, Elizabeth T.; Grogan-Kaylor, Andrew
Journal of Family Psychology, Apr 7, 2016
Whether spanking is helpful or harmful to children continues to be the source of considerable debate among both researchers and the public. This article addresses 2 persistent issues, namely whether effect sizes for spanking are distinct from those for physical abuse, and whether effect sizes for spanking are robust to study design differences. Meta-analyses focused specifically on spanking were conducted on a total of 111 unique effect sizes representing 160,927 children. Thirteen of 17 mean effect sizes were significantly different from zero and all indicated a link between spanking and increased risk for detrimental child outcomes. Effect sizes did not substantially differ between spanking and physical abuse or by study design characteristics.

Editorial  Ethical standards, truths, and lies  Bethany L. Brand Ph & Linda McEwen MA
Journal of Trauma & Dissociation Volume 17, Issue 3, 2016 pages 259-266 DOI: 10.1080/15299732.2016.1114357  This is an editorial about recent social and professional ethical developments that may signal attempts to arrive at truth about critical aspects of trauma after decades of lies and cover-ups. The first development came with the release of the Hoffman Report (Hoffman et al., 2015a), an investigation of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) complicity in abusive, traumatizing interrogations of political detainees, with one particular reference of note to this discussion. Another development was the publication of The Witch-Hunt Narrative by Ross Cheit (2014), which challenges widely held misconceptions about victims of child abuse and their credibility perpetuated since the preschool child abuse trials of the 1980s.
The ethical standards for International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD) members are derived from the ethical guidelines of national and professional groups (ISSTD, 2015). For psychologists who are members of the ISSTD, the APA provides ethical principles (APA, 2010), including general principles and ethical standards. Not only did some powerful people within the APA fail to follow its principles and standards, but, as noted in the Hoffman Report, it was the APA ethics director who was among those complicit in this failure.

Commission: US Lacks Strategies to Lower Child Abuse Deaths  By David Crary, AP National Writer  NEW YORK  Mar 17, 2016  The United States lacks coherent, effective strategies for reducing the stubbornly high number of children who die each year from abuse and neglect, a commission created by  Congress reported Thursday after two years of sometimes divisive deliberations. According to federal data, the number of such deaths has hovered at around 1,500 to 1,600 annually in recent years. But citing gaps in how this data is compiled, the report suggests the actual number may be as high as 3,000 a year.  Commission chairman David Sanders said a goal of zero maltreatment deaths was realistic.
“We looked at the airline industry — no one accepts a plane crash anymore. We can get that way with child fatalities,” said Sanders, executive vice president of Casey Family Programs.
The report made dozens of recommendations, including expanding safe-haven programs for abandoned infants and enlisting a broader range of community organizations to help often-overburdened child protection service workers.  “We need a system that does not rely on CPS agencies alone to keep all children safe,” the report said. “Other systems become key partners, including the courts, law enforcement, the medical community, mental health, public health, and education. Even neighbors who come into regular contact with young children and families are part of a public health approach.”….
At the state level, the report decried high caseloads and stressful working conditions for child protection workers.  “Shortages of workers, funds and training may mean that inexperienced workers are tasked with making life-or-death decisions with insufficient preparation or support,” said the report….
