Folk religion with deadly rituals raises safety concerns for law enforcement
Santa Muerte is becoming a prominent source of faith among drug traffickers and violent criminals, which is why many narcotics officers feel the public and law enforcement alike should beware. Erin Jones, Erica Proffer
Santa Muerte, which translates to “Holy Death” and “Saint Death” is among those folk religions growing in popularity in Central Texas that has law enforcement warning the public.
The folk saint’s image is that of a robed skeleton, carrying a scythe and either a globe or scales. Santa Muerte is a dark, mysterious folk saint in Latin American cultures, and gained popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s….
Santa Muerte is becoming a prominent source of faith among drug traffickers and violent criminals, which is why many narcotics officers feel the public and law enforcement alike should beware….
“They believe that the more sacrifice, the more gorier [sic] or intense the sacrifice – the better off they’ll be with the Santa Muerte,” said the undercover officer. The Mexican government reports La Familia/Knights Templar has sacrificed humans in their rituals. In 2008, Gulf Cartel members kidnapped rival Sinaloa Cartel members in Nuevo Laredo, less than five hours away from Austin, Texas. The Gulf Cartel took the Sinaloa members to public Santa Muerte shrines and executed the captors. The FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin released in 2014 suggests it was an offering to Santa Muerte. In July 2011, near El Paso, Texas, in the city of Juarez, Mexican police found remains dressed as a bride at a Santa Muerte alter. The house in which that alter was placed was used to hold kidnapping victims. The alter contained two other skulls and cigarette packs as offerings. Police still do not know the circumstances surrounding the remains. Dr. Bunker warns, “For U.S. law enforcement agencies, the rise of a criminalized and dark variant of Santa Muerte worship holds many negative implications. Of greatest concern, the inspired and ritualistic killings associated with this cult could cross the border and take place in the United States.” It has, according to these government reports. Three confirmed deaths in the United States involve sacrifices to Santa Muerte….
Knights Templar originate from the mountains in Michoacan. The cartel is known for its gruesome ritualistic killings….
“…an altar containing blood, bones, burned plastic police figurines, and black statuettes and candles will determine different worshiper intent than one containing a rainbow statuette, blue and bone candles, and offerings of various types of fruit,” he said…..

Consumer Watchdog Calls for Immediate Congressional Hearings on Bipartisan Bill to Change Internet Law So Child Sex Trafficking Websites like Backpage.com Can Be Held Accountable
SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 20, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Consumer Watchdog today called on the House Commerce Committee and Judiciary Committee to hold immediate hearings on a bill amending a key Internet law so websites like Backpage.com that facilitate child sex trafficking can be held accountable by victims and state attorneys general.
The bipartisan bill, Rep. Ann Wagner’s H.R. 1865, the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017, has 34 co-sponsors. It would amend Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. That section provides that a website can’t be held liable for what’s posted on its site by third parties. Tech companies and other defenders of CDA Section 230 claim it promotes and protects free expression on the Internet.
“Internet freedom must not come at the expense of children who are sex trafficked,” said John M. Simpson, Consumer Watchdog Privacy Project Director. “Just as the First Amendment does not allow you to shout fire in a crowded movie house, or to assist hit men and drug dealers in their criminal activity, CDA Section 230 must not be allowed to protect an exploitative business that is built on child sex trafficking”….
“One of the most notorious websites, Backpage.com, has become a virtual hub for child sex-trafficking. By one count 73% of child trafficking reports in the United States involve this cynical website,” wrote Simpson. “Backpage hides behind the cloak of Sec. 230 while too many in the tech industry blindly and reflexively claim that needed amendments would undermine Internet freedom.”….
Google, CDT, EFF and other tech industry representatives may claim to be protecting free speech and Internet freedom, but their activities have done little more than protect a notorious sex-trafficking hub from being held accountable by its victims, Consumer Watchdog said. Backpage’s abuses and the fight by its victims to hold it accountable are the subject of a new documentary film, I am Jane Doe. (http://www.iamjanedoefilm.com)

Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017
This bill amends the Communications Act of 1934 to specify that communications decency provisions protecting providers or users of interactive computer services from liability for the private blocking or screening of offensive material shall not be construed to impair the enforcement of, or limit availability of victim restitution or civil remedies under, state or federal criminal or civil laws relating to sexual exploitation of children or sex trafficking.
The bill amends the federal criminal code to specify that the violation for benefiting from “participation in a venture” engaged in sex trafficking of children, or by force, fraud, or coercion, includes knowing or reckless conduct by any person or entity and by any means that furthers or in any way aids or abets the violation.
A provider of an interactive computer service that publishes information provided by an information content provider with reckless disregard that the information is in furtherance of a sex trafficking offense shall be subject to a criminal fine or imprisonment for not more than 20 years.

8 dead, about 30 injured are found in hot semitrailer in Texas in ‘horrific’ human-trafficking incident ‘Horrific’ human-smuggling incident in Texas not an isolated event, officials say
By Michael Edison Hayden ALEXI FRIEDMAN Jul 23, 2017
Eight people were found dead and about 30 others injured inside a brutally hot semitrailer parked in a Walmart parking lot in San Antonio, Texas, in what authorities are calling “a horrific scene.”
One of the injured later died, officials said, bringing the death toll to nine in what police described as an apparent human smuggling attempt. Officials had first said two additional people had died, but later corrected the number to one.
Authorities became aware of the truck overnight after a Walmart employee, who had been approached by someone who had been in the truck asking for water, notified police of the interaction, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said this morning at a press conference, alongside other officials from the city.
“We’re looking at a human-trafficking crime here,” McManus said….
Meanwhile, surveillance video from the store showed that a number of vehicles entered the parking lot and “picked up lots of folks that were in that trailer that survived the trip,” McManus said….
Thomas Homan, acting Director for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), weighed in on the incident, calling it a “horrific crime.”
“By any standard, the horrific crime uncovered last night ranks as a stark reminder of why human smuggling networks must be pursued, caught and punished,” Homan said in a statement. “These networks have repeatedly shown a reckless disregard for those they smuggle.”….

Shocking pictures show a female RAF recruit being hurled around by naked servicemen imitating sex in degrading ‘initiation ritual’

Rebecca Crookshank claims she was assaulted at an RAF base in the Falklands
By Amie Gordon For Mailonline 30 July 2017
….She says she later had a personnel meeting with an officer in her bedroom, who convinced her to keep quiet by offering her a flight on a Tornado F3.
….Ms Crookshank told MailOnline: ‘With women now able to serve on the front line and sexual abuse claims on the rise it is clear that the military are not doing enough.
‘Training which encourages equality in the work place and zero tolerance of sexual abuse, harassment and bullying needs to be addressed from basic training and beyond.
‘The abhorrent behaviour I experienced in 2001 may be a long time ago to some but it has had a huge impact on my life and I will not be silenced.
‘If one other human being reads my story and finds the courage to speak out about their personal experience of abuse in the military or any workplace for that matter, then together we can move closer to a change in behaviour, zero tolerance of injustice, a positive shift in the face of adversity.’
She also claimed corporals had sex with young female trainees…..

Inside Justin Bieber’s Hillsong Church: Child abuse cover-up claims, rinsing its followers for money and facing ‘cult’ accusations By Emmeline Saunders 27 JUL 2017
….And now it’s Justin Bieber’s turn to spark controversy with his reported closeness to Hillsong Church, a global strand of Christianity that looks to recruit followers with music, dancing and community care projects.
But Hillsong has also faced accusations that it acts as a cult, as well as allegedly having attempted to cover up the child abuse allegations levelled against its founder’s father.
It is also accused of pushing its congregations to donate cash and of using Bible verses selectively to set its own agenda.
….Hillsong and child abuse
Brian Houston, who founded the Pentecostal Christian movement in Australia, stood down his own father, William ‘Frank’ Houston, as a preacher in 1999 after hearing an allegation that Frank had sexually abused a seven-year-old boy.
In a letter sent to church leaders in 2001, Brian claimed that there was no reason for the information to be spread any further afield, prompting claims of an attempted cover-up when the letter was leaked.
“Sadly there are always one or two people with their own agendas who will try and get mileage from other people’s pain,” Brian’s missive told ministers.
Frank would go on to leave Hillsong and died of a stroke in 2004. Fresh allegations that he’d molested six other children in New Zealand in previous decades continued to dog the organisation.
An investigation by Australia’s Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse found none of the allegations against Frank Houston were ever reported to police.
The commission’s report found Frank had sexually abused the seven-year-old boy, and had later admitted it to an assembly of church executives….
Bieber spent six weeks in 2014 living with Pastor Carl – one of the church’s lead pastors who is frequently compared to a rock star thanks to his charismatic brand of teaching – and grew close to the minister’s family.
According to GQ, the troubled pop star moved into Carl’s home after a period of car-crash media stories and reputational crisis. While he was there the two “worked through some stuff” and Bieber cried that he “wanted to know Jesus” before begging on his knees to be baptised.
He’s since attended Hillsong services and conferences – and was even suspected of cancelling the rest of his Purpose world tour in July 2017 so he could found his own branch of the church…..
It’s not just Bieber who’s known to follow Hillsong – his friends Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin and ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez have also been linked to the religious movement…..

Child abuse and neglect linked to gender inequality
Researchers investigate how physical abuse and neglect correlates with discrimination against women July 27, 2017 Springer
Summary: Children growing up in societies that experience high levels of gender inequality — irrespective of whether these are developed or developing countries — are more likely to be maltreated. This is according to a cross-national analysis of data from 57 countries worldwide.
….Rates of discrimination against women substantially influence the levels of child physical abuse and child neglect.
The researchers found all three gender inequity indices to be significantly associated with physical abuse and two of the three to be significantly associated with neglect, after controlling for country-level development. Specifically, higher scores indicating greater levels of discrimination against women on the SIGI, greater gender inequity on the GII, and lower scores on the GGI indicating greater gender gaps are associated with higher rates of child physical abuse and child neglect.
The authors conclude that based on these findings, efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect might benefit from reducing gender inequity.

Anti-fascism protests erupt across US as protesters blame Donald Trump for deadly white supremacist rally in Virginia
by Our Foreign Staff
Protesters decrying hatred and racism converged around the country on Sunday, saying they felt compelled to counteract the white supremacist rally that spiralled into deadly violence in Virginia.
The gatherings spanned from a march to President Donald Trump’s home in New York to candlelight vigils in several cities. In Seattle, police made arrests and confiscated weapons as Trump supporters and counter-protesters converged downtown.
Some focused on showing support for the people whom white supremacists condemn. Other demonstrations were pushing for the removal of Confederate monuments, the issue that initially prompted white nationalists to gather in anger this weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia. Still other gatherings aimed to denounce fascism and a presidential administration that organisers feel has let white supremacists feel empowered.
“People need to wake up, recognise that and resist it as fearlessly as it needs to be done,” said Carl Dix, a leader of the Refuse Fascism group organising demonstrations in New York, San Francisco and other cities. “This can’t be allowed to fester and to grow because we’ve seen what happened in the past when that was allowed.”….
Helen Rubenstein, 62, was among hundreds of people who marched through downtown Los Angeles. She said her parents were Holocaust survivors, and she’s worried that extremist views were becoming normal under Trump’s presidency.
“I blame Donald Trump 100 percent because he emboldened all these people to incite hate, and they are now promoting violence and killing,” Ms Rubenstein said.
Charlottesville descended into violence on Saturdayafter neo-Nazis, skinheads, Ku Klux Klan members and other white nationalists gathered to “take America back” and oppose plans to remove a Confederate statue in the Virginia college town, and hundreds of other people came to protest the rally. The groups clashed in street brawls, with hundreds of people throwing punches, hurling water bottles and beating each other with sticks and shields….

Neo-nazis and white supremacists are celebrating Trump’s remarks about the Charlottesville riots Natasha Bertrand Aug. 12, 2017
The founder of the Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi and white supremacist website that considers itself a part of the alt-right, celebrated the fact that Trump “outright refused to disavow” the white nationalist rally and movement.
“People saying he cucked are shills and kikes,” wrote the founder, Andrew Anglin. “He did the opposite of cuck. He refused to even mention anything to do with us. When reporters were screaming at him about White Nationalism he just walked out of the room.”
“Clearly President Trump is condemning the real haters: the SJW/Marxists who’ve attacked our guys,” said one commenters on the far-right, pro-Trump subreddit called r/The_Donald.
“Marxist” and “SJW,” or social justice warrior, are terms frequently used by the far-right to describe liberals.
“So glad GEOTUS called this bulls–t out for what it really is,” said another commenter, using an acronym to refer to Trump that stands for “God Emperor of the United States.'”

‘Jews will not replace us’: Why white supremacists go after Jews
By Yair Rosenberg August 14, 2017….
When white nationalists descended upon the historic Virginia city to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee, their “Unite the Right” rally gathered a veritable who’s who of top neo-Nazis in the United States, including Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke and alt-right leading light Richard Spencer, among others….
They immediately went after the Jews. At their Friday night rally at the University of Virginia, the white nationalists brandished torches and chanted anti-Semitic and Nazi slogans, including “blood and soil” (an English rendering of the Nazi “blut und boden”) and “Jews will not replace us” — all crafted to cast Jews as foreign interlopers who need to be expunged. The attendees proudly displayed giant swastikas and wore shirts emblazoned with quotes from Adolf Hitler. One banner read, “Jews are Satan’s children.”
“The truth is,” Duke told a large crowd Saturday, “the American media, and the American political system, and the American Federal Reserve, is dominated by a tiny minority: the Jewish Zionist cause.” Addressing another group, Richard Spencer mocked Charlottesville’s Jewish mayor, Mike Signer. “Little Mayor Signer — ‘See-ner’ — how do you pronounce this little creep’s name?” Spencer asked. The crowd responded by chanting, “Jew, Jew, Jew.” In TV interviews, attendees were not shy about their anti-Semitism.
And James Fields Jr., the man who is accused of mowing down protesters that day, killing one and injuring 19, “had this fascination with Nazism and a big idolatry of Adolf Hitler,” according to his high school history teacher. He was previously photographed at a rally for Vanguard America, a neo-Nazi group dedicated to fighting “the international Jew.”….
Inspired by Donald Trump, Duke himself ran for Senate in Louisiana, spending much of his time on the primary debate stage ranting against the Jews. When Melania Trump was found to have plagiarized Michelle Obama in her Republican National Convention address, Duke declared he’d “bet a gefilte fish” that it was Jewish sabotage.
Throughout the presidential campaign, Trump’s alt-right supporters barraged Jewish journalists with online abuse, including CNN’s Jake Tapper, the Atlantic’s Julia Ioffe and me, photoshopping us into gas chambers and concentration camps….

Colonia Dignidad: German court upholds jail term in Chile child abuse case
A German man who fled Chile after being sentenced to five years in prison for child sex abuse must serve his sentence in Germany. Hartmut Hopp was part of the notorious Colonia Dignidad enclave.
Date 14.08.2017
Harmut Hopp – who helped run the notorious Colonia Dignidad colony in Chile – must serve the five-year jail sentence handed to him by a Chilean judge, a German court in Krefeld ruled on Monday.
Hopp was sentenced in Chile back in 2011 for 16 counts of aiding the sexual abuse of children over several decades. However, he managed to flee to Germany before the sentence took legal effect, living freely in the western town of Krefeld….
Hopp is widely thought to have been among the closest associates of Paul Schäfer, the founder of the Colonia Dignidad enclave.
Schäfer, a German lay preacher, former Nazi soldier and convicted pedophile, fled Germany to Chile after World War II and founded the colony in the 1960s. Located in a remote mountainous region around 400 kilometers (250 miles) from the capital Santiago, the colony was intended to project an image of harmonious and communal living. At its peak, hundreds of German immigrants resided there.
However, allegations of child sex abuse soon emerged, after a number of former residents managed to escape the heavily-guarded enclave. However, Colonia Dignidad was allowed to continue to run with relative impunity, thanks to key political links enjoyed by its leaders. As well as being the scene for decades of child sex abuse, reports later uncovered that Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet had used the colony to torture and kill political dissidents. Residents are alleged to have taken part in the torture.
Following Chile’s democratic transition in 1990, officials began investigating the alleged abuses. Schäfer fled to Argentina after child sex abuse charges were filed against him. He wasn’t arrested until 2005, and was finally sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2006. He died in prison four years later at the age 88….

Leader of neo-Nazi group linked to Charlottesville attack was a US marine
Dillon Hopper, the self-styled ‘commander’ of the Vanguard America group that attacker James Fields marched with, was a sergeant in the US marine corps
Dillon Hopper served in Afghanistan and Iraq. His active duty with the marines ended in January this year.
Jon Swaine and Lois Beckett Monday 14 August 2017
The leader of the neo-Nazi group that James Fields marched with in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday before allegedly killing a protester with his car served in the US marine corps until earlier this year.
Dillon Hopper, the self-styled “commander” of Vanguard America, is a recently retired marine staff sergeant and veteran of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Members of his white supremacist group marched in Virginia last weekend.
Hopper, 29, has been using his former name, Dillon Irizarry, when appearing in public for Vanguard America. But he officially changed his name to Dillon Ulysses Hopper in November 2006, according to court records in his native New Mexico.
Hopper’s active duty with the marines ended in January this year, according to a Department of Defense record. He has lived in California and Ohio since returning to the US. Hopper’s full service record could not immediately be obtained. His Facebook avatar is currently a cartoon image of Donald Trump building a wall.
Hopper and Vanguard America did not respond to messages seeking comment. Hopper’s identity was first reported by Splinter.
Fields, a 20-year-old military bootcamp dropout from Maumee, Ohio, has been charged with crimes including murder after allegedly driving his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of people in Charlottesville who were demonstrating against the far-right. The crash killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injured about 20 others….
Fields had been photographed standing among members of Vanguard America earlier in the day. He was pictured holding a shield bearing the group’s logo and was wearing the same distinctive outfit – white polo shirt and khakis – as many Vanguard members. The group has said, however, that Fields is not a member.
Vanguard America is only about a year old. It is one of a handful of new white supremacist organizations that are attempting to radicalize young white men across the country. Its manifesto is racist and its website URL references the Nazi slogan “blood and soil”. The group bars people who are not of white European heritage….

“If you’re not resisting, you’re partaking”: a historian on Trump’s failure to call evil by its name The president had a chance to take a stand against fascism. He didn’t.
Updated by Sean Illing Aug 14, 2017
“This was our Beer Hall Putsch. This was the beginning of our revolution.”
Thus concluded a post on the Daily Stormer, a popular American neo-Nazi website in which the author, Andrew Anglin, recapped the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, this weekend.
The original “Beer Hall Putsch” was the first Nazi spectacle in 1923. It was modeled explicitly after Mussolini’s March on Rome. The putsch was an attempt by Hitler, the leader of the nascent Nazi Party, to seize power from the German government by marching to the center of Munich, alongside 2,000 fellow Nazis.
The putsch failed, amounting to little more than a crazed mob. Hitler was arrested and charged with treason. But the event became central to Hitler’s rise, as he used the subsequent trial to perform fiery speeches that were printed and reprinted in German newspapers.
On Sunday, I reached out to Timothy Snyder, a professor of European history at Yale University. Snyder has made a career of studying the history of 20th century fascism, and earlier this year released a book titled On Tyranny, a tightly argued warning about the dangers of encroaching American fascism.
I wanted to know what he thought about the events this weekend in Charlottesville, about the fact that the self-described alt-right protesters were shouting chants like “You will not replace us” and “Blood and soil” (the latter a direct reference to Nazi ideology), and about President Donald Trump’s unwillingness to condemn white supremacy in clear terms.
“There are moments,” he told me, “when there isn’t a gray zone, when there isn’t really room for nuance, where if you’re not resisting, you’re partaking.” Saturday was one such moment, and Trump’s insistence that the violence is “on many sides” was a missed opportunity to take a stand against an emergent threat….

Trump approval falls to lowest level ever in Gallup poll
By Robin Eberhardt – 08/14/17 President Trump’s approval rating has dropped to its lowest level ever in a Gallup tracking poll.
The president’s approval rating is only 34 percent in the latest Gallup average released Monday, while 61 percent of adults disapprove of the president’s performance, also a new high.
Trump’s approval rating has dropped at a time when he has taken heavy criticism for not explicitly calling out white supremacists and neo-Nazis in a statement condemning violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend.
The president did damage control on Monday, delivering a statement from the White House where he denounced white supremacists by name.
“Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to what we hold dear as Americans,” Trump said….

Trump’s position on Charlottesville has become even more pro-Nazi.
At a press conference in New York City to nominally promote his infrastructure bill, the president re-iterated his belief that both white supremacists and their opponents were at fault for the racial violence in Virginia this weekend. “You had a group on one side that was bad, and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent,” Trump said. In that one sentence, Trump returned to his original position that “many sides” bore responsibility, which comes after a transparently insincere attempt on Monday to blame neo-Nazis and white supremacists specifically.
But there’s more! Trump also gave a rousing endorsement of the white supremacists’ cause, saying that many “good people” had come to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. He said that tearing down the statue of Lee was comparable to tearing down statues of George Washington or Thomas Jefferson.
“Not all of those people were neo-Nazis,” Trump asserted. “Not all of those people were white supremacists by any stretch. … You had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people—on both sides.”
As a factual matter, Trump’s statement is dubious: The event was openly organized by white supremacists, so it is unlikely that many “fine people” were at the rally. His latest remarks have only validated the suspicion that Trump sees white supremacists as a crucial part of his political alliance and that he is loath to alienate them. And the country’s racists like what they’re hearing….

Trump defends white supremacists By Gabrielle Bluestone Aug 15, 2017
President Donald Trump defended the group of white supremacists who marched on Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend, telling reporters they were largely justified and being unfairly vilified by the media. The protests ended Saturday when one of the white supremacists drove his car into a crowd of people, killing one woman and injuring 19 others.
“What I’m saying is this: You had a group on one side and you had a group on the other and they came at each other with clubs and it was vicious and it was horrible and it was a horrible thing to watch,” he said at a Tuesday press conference in New York. “But there is another side. There was a group on this side, you can call them the left, that came violently attacking the other group. So you can say what you want but that’s the way it is.”
The press conference, which took place in the gold-plated lobby of Trump Tower, was to focus on infrastructure. But Trump quickly veered off-script into defending the white supremacists, pointing out that they had a permit to “innocently” protest, while the people who came to protest against them did not….. https://news.vice.com/story/donald-trump-blames-alt-left-for-charlottesville-violence

Why are these politicians smiling next to white nationalists?
By Carter Sherman Aug 15, 2017
After violence erupted Saturday at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, a photo started circulating on social media showing Republican Rep. Tom Garrett of Virginia standing next to a smiling Jason Kessler — the man who organized Saturday’s “Unite the Right” rally.
Garrett quickly denounced Kessler, telling Fox News that he had no idea who Kessler was when he met with him. But Garrett isn’t the only politician who’s ended up associating with the white nationalists and supremacists who attended the “Unite the Right” rally — unwittingly or not. And while very few politicians tend to come into contact with such extremists, that status quo seems likely to be upended, as white nationalists and supremacists intensify their efforts to inject their ideas into mainstream politics.
“That [2016] election campaign unleashed some really bad demons in our society, and it emboldened these people that we saw in Charlottesville to think that they’re part of the system,” Heidi Beirich, who studies hate groups at the Southern Poverty Law Center, told VICE News.
Photo ops like Garrett’s can sometimes just happen — Garrett told Fox News that meeting unsavory constituents of his district, which includes Charlottesville, is an “occupational hazard.” (When asked for comment, Garrett’s team directed VICE News to his Fox News appearance.) Politicians can also get caught up at a public event and fail to properly vet the people they’re standing next to. That’s what Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, a Republican, said happened to him, after photo began circulating showing him standing next to Peter Cvjetanovic — a college student who confirmed to the Reno Gazette-Journal that he was both a white nationalist and had attended the Saturday march….
Then, at the other end of the spectrum, are the politicians who seem to confirm Beirich’s fears and actually court the white nationalist and supremacist vote. Former Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode, who served in Congress from 1997 to 2008, spoke at a March event for Kessler’s organization Unity and Security for America, according to the group’s Facebook page. Goode could not be reached for comment.
Corey Stewart, who is currently running for Tim Kaine’s Senate seat, has repeatedly appeared at events with Kessler, having made the preservation of the state’s Confederate monuments the linchpin of his failed gubernatorial campaign last year. (He very nearly won the Republican nomination, losing by just over one percentage point.) He told the Washington Post Sunday that he hadn’t talked to Kessler recently, saying, “He does his own thing.”
As of Sunday, though, Stewart was the only Virginian politician of either party not to condemn white nationalists. Instead, he blamed “half the violence” on Saturday counterprotesters….

Fascism spread in 1930s America. It could spread again today.
By Seva Gunitsky Special to the Washington Post August 16, 2017
The violent white nationalist rally in Virginia has reawakened simmering fears of American fascism. But the roots of these feelings — and the militant organizations that promoted them — did not begin with the election of President Donald Trump. The last time fascism was brazenly embraced was in the 1930s. The lessons of that crucial decade bear increasing relevance for modern American life. The three big factors that drove the spread of American fascism at that time are still relevant for America today.
Fascist ideas were quite popular in 1930s America
In the 1930s, fascist ideas were increasingly accepted. This was reflected in the energetic growth of Nazi organizations. Ku Klux Klan rallies were common and numerous; Trump’s own father was reportedly arrested at one such rally. A 1941 book found that more than 100 such organizations had formed since 1933.
The appeal of fascist ideas extended far beyond the fringe, reaching prominent citizens such as Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh. Lindbergh went so far as to praise Adolf Hitler as “undoubtedly a great man.” In 1940, Lindbergh’s wife published a bestseller that called totalitarianism “The Wave of the Future” and an “ultimately good conception of humanity.”….
At the time, Jews served the same role for U.S. fascists that immigrants, Muslims and other minorities serve today: a vague but malicious threat they believed to be undermining America’s greatness. Surveys of U.S. public opinion from the 1930s are a startling reminder of just how widespread these attitudes became. As late as July 1942, a Gallup poll showed that 1 in 6 Americans thought Hitler was “doing the right thing” to the Jews. A 1940 poll found that nearly a fifth of Americans saw Jews as a national “menace” — more than any other group, including Germans. Almost a third anticipated “a widespread campaign against the Jews” — a campaign that 12 percent of Americans were willing to support.
The careers of anti-Semitic celebrities such as Catholic Rev. Charles Coughlin reflected the popular appeal of fascist ideas. Father Coughlin, as he was known, enjoyed the second-largest radio audience in the country (after President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fireside chats), frequently quoted Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, and praised the Nazi quest for full employment and racial purity. He broke with Roosevelt in 1934, forming his own party, whose 1936 candidate received nearly 1 million votes. Coughlin was finally silenced by the Catholic Church in early 1942…..

In 1927, Donald Trump’s father was arrested after a Klan riot in Queens
By Philip Bump February 29, 2016
….On Memorial Day 1927, brawls erupted in New York led by sympathizers of the Italian fascist movement and the Ku Klux Klan. In the fascist brawl, which took place in the Bronx, two Italian men were killed by anti-fascists. In Queens, 1,000 white-robed Klansmen marched through the Jamaica neighborhood, eventually spurring an all-out brawl in which seven men were arrested.
One of those arrested was Fred Trump of 175-24 Devonshire Rd. in Jamaica.
This is Donald Trump’s father. Trump had a brother named Fred, but he wasn’t born until more than a decade later. The Fred Trump at Devonshire Road was the Fred C. Trump who lived there with his mother, according to the 1930 Census….
It’s not clear from the context what role Fred Trump played in the brawl. The news article simply notes that seven men were arrested in the “near-riot of the parade,” all of whom were represented by the same lawyers. Update: A contemporaneous article from the Daily Star notes that Trump was detained “on a charge of refusing to disperse from a parade when ordered to do so.”

All the Evidence We Could Find About Fred Trump’s Alleged Involvement with the KKK
Mike Pearl Mar 10 2016
Newspaper clips obtained by VICE suggest the Republican frontrunner’s father may have worn the robe and hood of a Klansman in 1927.
Late last month, in an interview with Republican frontrunner Donald Trump, CNN host Jake Tapper asked the candidate whether he would disavow an endorsement from longtime Ku Klux Klan leader and white nationalist celebrity David Duke. Trump declined. “I don’t know anything about David Duke,” he said. Moments later, he added, “I know nothing about white supremacists.”
Trump has since walked back his comments, blaming his hesitance to condemn the Klan on a “bad earpiece.” The matter has now been filed away into the ever-growing archives of volatile statements Trump has made about race and ethnicity during the current election cycle—a list that includes kicking off his presidential campaign by calling Mexicans rapists, calling for the “‘total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” and commenting that perhaps a Black Lives Matter protester at one of his rallies “should have been roughed up.”
But the particulars of the David Duke incident call to mind yet another news story, one that suggests that Trump’s father, the late New York real estate titan Fred Trump, once wore the robe and hood of a Klansman.
Versions of this story emerged last September when Boing Boing dug up an old New York Times article from May of 1927 that listed a Fred Trump among those arrested at a Klan rally in Jamaica, Queens, when “1,000 Klansmen and 100 policemen staged a free-for-all,” in the streets. Donald Trump’s father would have been 21 in 1927 and had spent most of his life in Queens….
Moreover, three additional newspaper clips unearthed by VICE contain separate accounts of Fred Trump’s arrest at the May 1927 KKK rally in Queens, each of which seems to confirm the Times account of the events that day. While the clips don’t confirm whether Fred Trump was actually a member of the Klan, they do suggest that the rally—and the subsequent arrests—did happen, and did involve Donald Trump’s father, contrary to the candidate’s denials. A fifth article mentions the seven arrestees without giving names, and claims that all of the individuals arrested—presumably including Trump—were wearing Klan attire….

Stephen Bannon Out at the White House After Turbulent Run
By MAGGIE HABERMAN, MICHAEL D. SHEAR and GLENN THRUSH AUG. 18, 2017

Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s outgoing chief strategist, has been criticized as being emblematic of the far-right nationalism that turned violent in Virginia last weekend.
BEDMINSTER, N.J. — Stephen K. Bannon, the embattled chief strategist who helped President Trump win the 2016 election by embracing their shared nationalist impulses, departed the White House on Friday after a turbulent tenure shaping the fiery populism of the president’s first seven months in office.
Mr. Bannon’s exit, the latest in a string of high-profile West Wing shake-ups, came as Mr. Trump is under fire for saying that “both sides” were to blame for last week’s deadly violence in Charlottesville, Va. Critics accused the president of channeling Mr. Bannon when he equated white supremacists and neo-Nazis with the left-wing protesters who opposed them….
Mr. Bannon’s outsized influence on the president, captured in a February cover of Time magazine with the headline “The Great Manipulator,” was reflected in the response to his departure.
Conservatives groused that they lost a key advocate inside the White House and worried aloud that Mr. Trump would shift left, while cheers erupted on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange when headlines about Mr. Bannon’s ouster appeared. Both the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index and the Dow Jones industrial average immediately rose, though they ended the day slightly down….
By Friday night, Mr. Bannon was already back at the far-right Breitbart News, chairing an editorial meeting at the organization he helped run before joining Mr. Trump’s campaign and where he can continue to advance hisMr. Bannon can still wield influence from outside the West Wing. He believes he can use his perch at Breitbart — which has given a platform to the so-called alt-right, a loose collection of activists, some of whom espouse openly racist and anti-Semtic views — to publicly pressure the president. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/18/us/politics/steve-bannon-trump-white-house.html

Pregnant woman murdered in apparent satanic ritual On Aug 20, 2017 By Nicole Morley
A pregnant woman whose ashes were found on wasteland is thought to have been murdered in a Satanic ritual. Fernanda Pereyra, 26, is believed to have been stabbed to death before being burned in a fire so hot that only a necklace was left by which to identify her. It’s believed that Fernanda Pereyra, 26, was stabbed to death before being burned in a fire so hot that only a necklace was left to identify her. Pereyra, who was six months pregnant, was found on kilometre six of Route Six near the town of Rincon de los Sauces, in the western Argentine province of Neuquen. Investigators think the three sixes were chosen on purpose to represent the number 666 and say the killers used a large amount of petrol to burn the body to ash….
The suspects have also been linked with drug trafficking and are thought to practice Satanism and unidentified African religions.
Police investigators named San La Muerte (Saint Death), the paron saint of drug traffickers, and ‘Destranca Rua’, an entity linked with the Angolan ‘kimbanda’ religion as having featured in the alleged ritual.
Officers searching a suspect’s house say they found ‘Satanic’ music and images featuring tridents and women in flames.
A sheep in the courtyard was also suspected to have been used in the trio’s Satanic rituals….
Police say they have two hypotheses for the murder’s motivation beyond its religious significance. The first is that Pereryra was murdered by her boyfriend because she got pregnant by another man. The other is that it was to warn other citizens against interfering with drug-dealing gangs. http://nehandaradio.com/2017/08/20/pregnant-woman-murdered-apparent-satanic-ritual/

Military-style Christian sect leader charged in abuse case
By Russell Contreras? AP August 21
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A leader of a New Mexico military-style Christian sect is facing dozens of child sexual abuse charges in a case that authorities say is connected to widespread abuse by the religious commune.
Peter Green of the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps in the remote community of Fence Lake faces 100 counts of criminal sexual penetration of a child, according to a criminal complaint filed August 15. Sect members Deborah Green, Joshua Green and Stacey Miller also face various charges ranging from child abuse, bribery and not reporting a birth.
KOAT-TV reports (https://goo.gl/Qtcsnr) that all four were arrested Sunday. Sheriff Tony Mace told the station that his office began investigating the group last year after two members claimed they had escaped the commune in the sparsely populated area of mostly ranchland. Those who escaped told deputies that Deborah Green and Stacey Miller allowed Miller’s 12-year-old son to die of the flu in 2014, Mace said.
Miller faces one count each of intentional abuse of a child age 12-18, bribery of a witness and not reporting a birth.
In a statement, the group said the allegations “are totally false” and similar to others the group has faced over the years….
The Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps describes itself as a group that is “aggressive and revolutionary for Jesus” and provides a free spiritual “ammo pack” to anyone who writes. Photos of members show them in military-style clothing and on missions in Africa.
Its website is laced with anti-Semitic language and anti-gay tirades about same sex marriage.
The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps as a hate group.
The group has its origins in Sacramento, California, after Deborah and James Green founded “Free Love Ministries” but garnered media attention for its unique beliefs and its communal houses.
Former sect member Maura Alana Schmierer told The Associated Press on Monday by the group’s latest troubles and had been interview by investigators recently. “I’ve been trying to expose them for years,” said Schmierer, who left the sect in the late 1980s.
A 2012 National Geographic Television show “Escaped a Cult” documented Schmierer’s experience with the sect. She said Deborah Green ordered her to live in a shed with no toilet and with little food.
Schmierer sued the sect for mistreatment and forcing her to give up legal custody of three of her children. A judge in 1989 awarded her $1.08 million dollars but the group fled California and later resurfaced near El Paso, Texas, and then in western New Mexico….

Paramilitary sect members indicted in child abuse case
By Crimesider Staff CBS/AP August 28, 2017
GRANTS, N.M. — A grand jury has indicted four members of a New Mexico paramilitary religious sect in connection with a child abuse and child sexual abuse investigation.
The Cibola County grand jury voted late Friday to indict the four members of the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps after a magistrate judge refused to lower bonds.
Sect co-leader Deborah Green is facing charges of failure to report a birth, child abuse and sexual penetration of a minor. Green is nicknamed “the general,” because she is one of the founders of the group, reports CBS affiliate KRQE. Investigators say she and her son-in-law, Peter Green, molested a girl.
Peter Green faces 100 counts of criminal sexual penetration of a child. He is accused of raping a girl at least four times a week from the time she was 7, according to court documents.
Police have not released the identities of victim in the case.
The duo and two others also face charges for failure to register the births of their 11 children….
The group, which was founded in California, says the allegations are totally false. The group claims they are merely a small, poor group living in a secluded ranching area in New Mexico, where they are often persecuted by people who don’t understand their reading of the Bible.
But authorities say the trustees of the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps own thousands of acres of land and benefited from a wealthy high-ranking member who aided them in avoiding law enforcement agencies by hiding children throughout their vast holdings.
Those holdings and regular deceptions by leaders, authorities said, made it difficult for the small Cibola County Sheriff’s Office to investigate allegations of child abuse that former members say went back years.
Speaking before a magistrate judge on Friday, Cibola County Undersheriff Michael Munk gave a glimpse into his department’s two-year investigation of the militant sect former members say treated followers like slaves and often physically beat children who had no records of being born. That investigation led to the Sunday raid of the group’s Fence Lake compound and the arrest of four members….
Its website is laced with anti-Semitic language and anti-gay tirades about same-sex marriage.

NM religious group in spotlight for horrific crimes against children
KOAT Updated: Aug 21, 2017 Megan Cruz
CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. —
The leader and three members of a religious group based in Cibola County were arrested over the weekend for what investigators called horrific crimes against children.
Charges include over 100 counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor and child abuse.
The Cibola County Sheriff’s Office says deputies arrested Deborah Green, Peter Green, Joshua Green, and Stacey Miller of the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps Sunday morning. According to the group’s website, Deborah and her husband James are the “Generals” and command their army to spread Christian ideals throughout the world. They’re based out of Fence Lake in western Cibola County.
Sheriff Tony Mace says his office first started investigating the group last year when two members claimed they just escaped the commune. They told deputies Deborah and another member Stacey Miller allowed Miller’s 12-year-old son to die of the flu in 2014….
According to arrest warrants, no one took the boy to the hospital. Puss started leaking from his forehead and he lost his ability to speak and move his right side. He was buried on the property and no one reported his death.
Investigators asked Miller why she didn’t get her son help. She told them “she wanted to trust God.” Deputies arrested her from her home in Sierra County. She’s now charged with child abuse.
The warrants say Deborah controlled the group’s money and rarely wanted to pay for hospital visits, preaching that those who are sick “must repent to be healed.” She’s now charged with neglect resulting in the death of a child.
The Sheriff’s Office also charged Deborah with sexual assault of a minor and child abuse. Investigators say in 2001, Deborah sexually assaulted her daughter’s 5-year-old girl who they believe was smuggled in from Uganda as a baby with forged documents….

Reimer: Red Sox child sexual abuse scandal another disgraceful portion of Tom Yawkey’s legacy
Alex Reimer August 21, 2017
Former Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey’s record of virulent racism has been recounted numerous times in the debate to rename Yawkey Way. But another disgraceful portion of his ownership tenure often goes unmentioned.
Eight years before longtime Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky faced child sexual abuse charges, the Red Sox settled a longstanding child molestation case of their own. John Henry, who purchased the team in late 2001, paid $3.15 million to seven men who say former clubhouse attendant Don Fitzpatrick sexually abused them during his more than 20-year tenure with the club. A victim came forward to the team in 1971, but Fitzpatrick remained with Red Sox until 1991, when a man showed up at a nationally televised game in Anaheim and held up a sign that read, “Don Fitzpatrick sexually assaulted me.” The Red Sox paid out an $100,000 settlement and Fitzpatrick left the club four days later.
There are now 20 alleged victims, most of whom tell a similar story: Fitzpatrick, who presided over the visitor’s clubhouse, lured them in with promises of employment and access. The men who successfully sued the Red Sox for Fitzpatrick’s misconduct, dubbed the “Winter Haven Seven,” were lured in at the team’s former Spring Training headquarters in Winter Haven, Fla. Fitzpatrick pleaded guilty in 2002 to four counts of attempted sexual battery against boys younger than 12 between 1975 and 1989 in the central Florida city. He died in 2005 without serving any time.
As Yahoo’s Jeff Passan details in an extensive story about the scandal, Fitzpatrick was a favorite of Tom and Jean Yawkey. The couple operated a home for disadvantaged boys in South Carolina, and often took wayward youths under their wing. Tom Yawkey took a particular liking to Fitzpatrick, an orphan who played pepper with batboys outside Fenway Park prior to Red Sox home games.
Two sources told Passan that Yawkey “protected” Fitzpatrick when his “tendencies to gravitate towards young boys became apparent.” Red Sox players reportedly instructed young boys, especially African-Americans, to stay away from Fitzpatrick. Passan reports that one player saw Fitzpatrick sodomizing a young boy in the team shower and alerted the team, but Fitzpatrick kept his job (much like how ex-Penn State coach Mike McQueary says he caught Sandusky molesting a boy in the locker room shower).
It’s uncertain how much the Yawkeys knew about Fitzpatrick’s monstrous behavior. But if players were aware of it, then it’s fair to assume the rumors had percolated up to the owner’s box. Fitzpatrick’s swift removal after the 1991 incident, and the Red Sox’ willingness to settle, also indicates they had knowledge of their beloved clubhouse attendant’s sick tendencies.
Yawkey’s 44-year tenure as owner, which lasted from 1933 until 1976, was a low-point in franchise history. The Red Sox were basement dwellers for the majority of those years, largely due to his refusal to integrate. Yawkey hosted tryouts for Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays and Billy Williams, declining to sign all three.

Huge rise in UK child neglect prompts call for urgent action
Reports of problems rise 60% in five years with nearly nine in 10 serious enough to refer to social services or police The NSPCC received 19,448 reports of child neglect in 2016-17, up 61% on the previous year. Tuesday 22 August 2017 Reports of child neglect in the UK have risen by more than 60% in the last five years with nearly nine in 10 calls proving serious enough to be referred to social services or the police.
Nearly 19,500 calls reporting child neglect were dealt with by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in the last 12 months. The charity said a growing number of callers were concerned about children, some under the age of five, being left at home unsupervised by parents struggling with alcohol and drug use.

Journo who ‘exposed rapes in Dera’ was killed: Case at final stage in same court
The journalist was shot from point-blank range at his residence on October 24, 2002, months after the paper published an anonymous letter narrating how women finding solace in the Dera as sadhvis were sexually harassed and raped by the Dera chief.
Aug 25, 2017 Prabhjit Singh Hindustan Times, Sirsa
As a CBI court on Friday convicted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the controversial head of the religious sect Dera Sacha Sauda, of raping two women at the cult’s headquarters in Haryana’s Sirsa town, a bereaved son too awaits justice for the murder of his father, journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, who had exposed the alleged rape of ‘sadhvis’ (female followers) at the Dera 15 years ago.
Chhatrapati was shot from point-blank range at his residence on October 24, 2002, months after the paper published an anonymous letter narrating how women finding solace in the Dera as sadhvis were sexually harassed and raped by the Dera chief. His son Anshul has been fighting the legal battle that has now reached final arguments in the same CBI court at Panchkula that found the dera chief guilty on August 25….
Another murder case against the Dera chief in the same court is for the killing of Ranjit Singh, a former Dera member, in July 2002 as he had highlighted alleged wrongdoings inside the Dera headquarters at Sirsa, including sexual exploitation of female devotees by some people in the sect’s management….

Whilst the international community has become increasingly aware and accepting of the dangers of abuse whether through cyber grooming and bullying, trafficking, abuse by family and others, (i.e. multiperpetrator abuse), Ritual Abuse, also known as Ritualistic abuse or sadistic abuse, still lacks acceptance. This places victims at greater risk and adds to the problems faced by mental health professionals.

Eileen Aveni, LCSW, LMSW, ACSW, BCD, holds a Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. She is currently in private practice in Fairfax, Virginia, where she also does full-day & longer intensives and consultations for ritual abuse, mind control and organized abuse survivors and their therapists from around the US. She also maintains a very active online practice which serves both Virginia and Michigan. Eileen has been working with ritual abuse and mind control survivors for over 27 years.
Recognition of ritual abuse and mind control in survivors is complex, as they often present with clues that are not obvious to a clinician unfamiliar with this more complex and severe type of trauma. This presentation will provide an overview of the clinical features and clues that ritual abuse and mind control may be present in the background of a client, despite apparently unrelated presenting problems.
Working With Ritual Abuse Survivors: Patterns and Challenges

She has also been the Director of ISSTD’s Professional Training Program, and Co-chair of ISSTD’s Center for Advanced Studies in Trauma and Dissociation Certificate Program, the gold standard in trauma training for complex PTSD and dissociation.
There are several patterns and behaviors that are common in survivors of ritualized abuse, and these show up in therapy in ways that impact treatment and the therapeutic relationship. Being able to identify those common themes helps both therapist and client see both the adaptive value in them, and how they need to change to allow the client to become self-empowered and free.

Dr. Michael Salter is a senior lecturer in criminology at Western Sydney University, Australia. He is the author of the book Organised Sexual Abuse (Routledge, 2013) as well as numerous papers and book chapters on organised abuse, child abuse and violence against women.
This session will present the findings of an Australian interview study with women disclosing organised abuse in adulthood and the mental health professionals who support them. Organised abuse refers to the sexual abuse of multiple children by multiple perpetrators acting in a coordinated way, and is reported by a significant minority of clients in dissociative disorder clinics. It is not unusual for adults disclosing organised abuse to indicate that abuse continued into adulthood, and may be ongoing at the time of treatment.

Across the nation, priest sexual abuse cases haunt Catholic parishes
USA TODAY Aug. 23, 2017
In May 2003, Thomas O’Brien, then bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix, admitted to sheltering at least 50 priests accused of sexual abuse, often shuffling them around to parishes across the state.
O’Brien’s admission, released under an agreement with the county attorney, acknowledged he “allowed Roman Catholic priests under my supervision to work with minors after becoming aware of allegations of sexual misconduct.” He also waived his own immunity should sexual misconduct allegations against him surface.
Thirteen years later, in a lawsuit filed last September, O’Brien — now bishop emeritus — was accused of sexually abusing a grade-school boy.
In recent months, USA TODAY Network reporters at the Pacific Daily News have uncovered scores of allegations involving 14 Catholic priests on Guam, where a former altar boy’s accusation last summer that Archbishop Anthony Apuron sexually abused him in the 1970s has prompted other revelations.
Abuse cases also have roiled Catholic parishes elsewhere the nation, sometimes decades after evidence of the crimes first emerged….
In the O’Brien case, an Arizona man sued, claiming repressed memories resurfaced two years ago, according to court documents. The lawsuit accuses O’Brien, now 81, of sexual abuse from 1977 through 1982. O’Brien, who stepped aside as an active bishop in June 2003 after he was found guilty of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, denies the accusation.
The suit names 60 other Roman Catholic priests or church employees, dating back to the 1950s and alleges a cover-up….
In 2002, as a child sexual abuse scandal in Boston’s archdiocese engulfed the Catholic Church, The News Journal in Wilmington, Del., began chronicling decades of child abuse, cover-ups and quiet transfers of priests from one parish to another.
By 2011, the Diocese of Wilmington and several religious orders throughout the diocese distributed more than $110 million to 152 adult survivors who were sexually abused by area Catholic priests….https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/08/23/priest-sexual-abuse-cases-catholic-parishes-nationwide/569221001/

Judge dismisses several counts in Bishop Thomas O’Brien sexual-abuse case
Jerod MacDonald-Evoy, The Republic Aug. 25, 2017
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge David Udall dismissed counts of public nuisance, fraud, fiduciary fraud and negligent infliction of emotional distress, leaving eight of the original 14 counts.
The counts that were dropped alleged the church had financial and oversight responsibilities related to O’Brien’s alleged actions.
In their motions to dismiss multiple allegations in the lawsuit, attorneys for the church contended that some of the accusations were too broad and sweeping. Declaring the Phoenix Diocese a public nuisance would be akin to “creating a new law,” defense attorney John Kelly said in the church’s response….
Allegations stem from repressed memories
The allegations remaining in the civil case arise from what court documents describe as repressed memories that resurfaced two years ago while an Arizona man was attending his son’s baptism.
The abuse is alleged to have begun in 1977 when the plaintiff, identified in court documents as “Joseph W.,” was in the second grade.
“The abuse often took place before or during church services attended by Joseph W. and his family,” the lawsuit states, “and under the guise of Bishop O’Brien showing Joseph W. how to assist with some aspect of the ceremony.”
In 2002, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office initiated a grand-jury investigation into sexual abuse by Catholic priests at the Phoenix Diocese. O’Brien was the bishop in charge of the diocese at the time.
By 2003, O’Brien admitted to sheltering at least 50 priests accused of sexual abuse, often shuffling them around to different parishes across the state….
Along with O’Brien, the lawsuit names 60 other priests, deacons and religious leaders who had been credibly accused, investigated or found guilty of sexual abuse and who worked for or visited church properties within the Phoenix Diocese….

Clergy sex abuse suit says former priest Brouillard swam naked, molested Scouts
Haidee V Eugenio Aug. 19, 2017
A former Boy Scout accused former priest Louis Brouillard of sexually abusing him around 1977 or 1978 at Lonfit River, according to a lawsuit filed in the District Court of Guam.
The accuser, identified in court documents only by his initials V.Q., filed a $10 million lawsuit Friday afternoon against Brouillard, the Archdiocese of Agana, the Boy Scouts of America and its Aloha Council Chamorro District.
V.Q., represented by attorney David J. Lujan, is the 98th person to file a childhood sexual abuse lawsuit on Guam involving the Catholic Church….
“During these Boy Scout activities, Brouillard sexually molested and abused V.Q. On numerous occasions, while swimming, Brouillard would swim completely naked and routinely instructed V.Q. and the other boys to remove their clothes, and Brouillard would grope and touch their private parts,” the lawsuit says.
The priest would often reward the boys by taking them out to restaurants, according to the lawsuit….http://www.guampdn.com/story/news/2017/08/18/clergy-sex-abuse-suit-says-former-priest-brouillard-swam-naked-molested-scouts/579103001/

Psychologists Behind CIA ‘Enhanced Interrogation’ Program Settle Detainees’ Lawsuit
August 17, 2017 Bill Chappell
Two psychologists who were paid more than $80 million by the CIA to develop “enhanced interrogation” techniques — which have been called torture — have settled a lawsuit brought by men who were detained.
The list of brutal methods devised by Bruce Jessen and James Mitchell for use by the U.S. included waterboarding. The tactics were meant to condition detainees into a state of helplessness. Mitchell has said he was told by U.S. officials that the idea was to “walk right up to the edge of the law.”
The case had been set to go before a jury on Sept. 5. Because of their status as contractors rather than government employees, the lawsuit had targeted Jessen and Mitchell as private citizens.
Based in Spokane, Wash., the two psychologists were sued by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of two former prisoners and the family of one detainee who died of extreme cold in a secret CIA prison.
The case was filed in October 2015, after the Senate intelligence committee released part of its report on the CIA’s programs in which Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the panel’s chairwoman, wrote that she had concluded that “under any common meaning of the term, CIA detainees were tortured.”….
Similar details of the detainees’ treatment emerged from the plaintiffs and the Senate report: Prisoners were often held nude or nearly nude, left hanging by their arms or chained to the floor, confined in small places and subjected to intense cold…..
The defendants issued a statement Thursday in which Jessen said, “Neither Dr. Mitchell nor I knew about, condoned, participated in, or sanctioned the unauthorized actions that formed the basis for this lawsuit.”
In recent hearings, the judge also “noted that the federal government is paying for the team of defense attorneys for Mitchell and Jessen and would also fund any potential cash award by a jury,” as The Spokesman-Review reported. Back in 2010, the AP and Mother Jones reported that the CIA had agreed to pay up to $5 million toward the psychologists’ attorneys fees….
The terms of the settlement are confidential. ACLU attorney Dror Ladin called it “a historic victory for our clients and the rule of law,” adding that it shows there are consequences for those accused of torture.
In suing Mitchell and Jessen, the ACLU says, the plaintiffs accused them of “torture; cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment; nonconsensual human experimentation; and war crimes.”
Mitchell and Jessen’s work stemmed from military psychologists’ efforts to prepare U.S. soldiers for potential capture, subjecting them to isolation, insults, and waterboarding as part of a training program known as Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape, or SERE. The pair were the first to propose “applying the harsh tactics used in SERE training to detainees,” as NPR’s Alix Spiegel reported in 2009.
On Thursday, Mitchell said that “certain individuals performed acts on detainees, including plaintiffs, without our knowledge or consent, and without authorization from the CIA — acts that should not have occurred and for which we are not responsible.”
As part of the settlement, the psychologists and the former detainees agreed on a joint statement. It reads:
“Drs. Mitchell and Jessen acknowledge that they worked with the CIA to develop a program for the CIA that contemplated the use of specific coercive methods to interrogate certain detainees.
“Plaintiff Gul Rahman was subjected to abuses in the CIA program that resulted in his death and in pain and suffering for his family, including his personal representative Obaidullah. Plaintiffs Suleiman Abdullah Salim and Mohamed Ahmed Ben Soud were also subjected to coercive methods in the CIA program, which resulted in pain and suffering for them and their families.
“Plaintiffs assert that they were subjected to some of the methods proposed by Drs. Mitchell and Jessen to the CIA, and stand by their allegations regarding the responsibility of Drs. Mitchell and Jessen.
“Drs. Mitchell and Jessen assert that the abuses of Mr. Salim and Mr. Ben Soud occurred without their knowledge or consent and that they were not responsible for those actions. Drs. Mitchell and Jessen also assert that they were unaware of the specific abuses that ultimately caused Mr. Rahman’s death and are also not responsible for those actions….

On Eve of Trial, Psychologists Agree to Historic Settlement in ACLU Case on Behalf of Three Torture Victims August 17, 2017
NEW YORK — In a first for a case involving CIA torture, the American Civil Liberties Union announced a settlement today in the lawsuit against the two psychologists who designed and implemented the agency’s brutal program. A jury trial was scheduled to begin on September 5, after the plaintiffs successfully overcame every attempt by the psychologists to have the case dismissed.
The lawsuit was brought by the ACLU on behalf of Suleiman Abdullah Salim, Mohamed Ahmed Ben Soud, and the family of Gul Rahman, who froze to death in a secret CIA prison. The three men were tortured and experimented on using methods developed by the CIA-contracted psychologists, James Mitchell and John “Bruce” Jessen.
“This is a historic victory for our clients and the rule of law,” said ACLU attorney Dror Ladin. “This outcome shows that there are consequences for torture and that survivors can and will hold those responsible for torture accountable. It is a clear warning for anyone who thinks they can torture with impunity.”
The full terms of the settlement agreement are confidential.
“We brought this case seeking accountability and to help ensure that no one else has to endure torture and abuse, and we feel that we have achieved our goals,” the plaintiffs said in a joint statement praising the settlement. “We were able to tell the world about horrific torture, the CIA had to release secret records, and the psychologists and high-level CIA officials were forced to answer our lawyers’ questions. It has been a long, difficult road, but we are very pleased with the results.”
Until now, every lawsuit trying to hold people accountable for the CIA torture program has been dismissed at initial stages because the government successfully argued that letting the cases proceed would reveal state secrets. But unlike previous cases, this time the Justice Department did not try to derail the lawsuit. The defendants attempted to dismiss the case multiple times, but the court consistently ruled that the plaintiffs had valid claims.
“Government officials and contractors are on notice that they cannot hide from accountability for torture,” said Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU National Security Project. “Our clients’ groundbreaking case has changed the legal landscape. It showed that the courts are fully capable of handling lawsuits involving abuses committed in the name of national security.”…..
In addition to torturing prisoners themselves, Mitchell and Jessen trained other CIA personnel in their methods. In 2005, they founded a company that the CIA contracted with to run its entire torture program, including supplying interrogators for the agency’s secret “black site” prisons. The government paid the company $81 million over several years….

Notes on rituals, child porn found at home of elderly Seattle brothers accused of abuse BY Christopher Brennan NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Wednesday, August 23, 2017
Investigators found toys, used children’s underwear and kids’ shoes at the home where three elderly brothers are accused of fostering their sick obsession with young girls.
Prosecutors say the Seattle home of Charles Emery, 82; Thomas Emery, 80, and Edwin Emery, 78, held handwritten notes about the “kidnapping, torturing, raping and murdering of young girls.”
Investigators say that the men accumulated a trove of child pornography until their niece saw pictures of sexual abuse when cleaning the home earlier this month and called 911…..
Beyond the horrific images, court documents say that the suspects “have shared the majority of their lives sexually abusing children to whom they had access” and wrote graphic descriptions of abusing children.
None of the brothers have children, though evidence provided by their niece included the used underwear, dozens of children’s penny loafers, small vodka bottles, notes about “ritualistic and satanic sacrifices of minor female children” as well as local and national news clips about murdered, missing and abused children….
The youngest brother was also investigated but not prosecuted for child pornography in 2013 after images were found on his computer when he brought it in for repairs, a probe during which he allegedly admitted to abusing a sister and her daughter.

Brothers accused of abuse probed for Lindsey Baum cold-case link BY Christopher Brennan NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Thursday, August 24, 2017 A flier of a missing 10-year-old girl found in the home of three elderly brothers with notes of satanic rituals has rekindled hopes of a possible cold case break.
Charles Emery, 82, Thomas Emery, 80, and Edwin Emery, 78, were arrested earlier this week on child pornography and sexual abuse charges, with prosecutors saying their home was “littered floor to ceiling” with sick images, toys and children’s shoes.
The discoveries came as a relative was cleaning out their home in Seattle, though investigators are now also looking at the home one of the brothers owned in suburban Shelton….
Authorities are now looking into any potential link the Emery brothers may have to Baum’s fate, with Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott telling KIRO that a flier about the missing girl was found in the Shelton home.
That discovery comes as investigators looking into both the Shelton and Seattle homes have reportedly found notes about the “ritualistic and Satanic sacrifices of minor female children.”…
That house is 30 minutes from where Lindsey Baum, then 10 years old, vanished in June 2009.

Peter Sarsgaard Tackles LSD, CIA Mind-Control and Political Dissent in ‘Wormwood’
9/11/2017 by Ariston Anderson
Peter Sarsgaard in ‘Wormwood’ The actor stars as bacteriologist Frank Olson in the new Errol Morris miniseries. In 1953 bacteriologist Frank Olson plunged to his death from a hotel window after being unknowingly dosed with LSD by the CIA. The headline-grabbing story seemed sinister enough until a decades-long investigation revealed that the actual truth behind his death might be something much more nefarious: a government-order execution to get rid of a political liability.
Peter Sarsgaard brings the last days of Olson’s life to light in the new Errol Morris miniseries Wormwood, a 258-minute odyssey that is one part detective story and one part a history of government deception. The period flashbacks are contrasted with present-day interviews with Frank Olson’s introspective son Eric, who has spent his life trying to uncover the mystery of his dissident father’s death….
Do you share your character’s paranoia and questioning of the government?
I don’t have paranoia of the government because I know that it’s up to no good a lot of the time. They advertise it now; they don’t hide it. So at least my paranoia is gone. I’ve never trusted completely any government; I don’t think you are supposed to. Like at a certain point you are supposed to see your parents as people, not as mom and dad and be able to deal with them as people. I think a lot of people treat the government as parents that they aren’t allowed to criticize in any way….
What’s the solution?
I think education. I actually think that real autonomous education, free from any government input is what helps….
