Child abuse inquiry told of sexual assaults, beatings in Darwin home  Commission is hearing from members of the stolen generations who say they were abused in the Northern Territory  Helen Davidson, Monday 22 September 2014   Indigenous children were beaten, sexually assaulted, stripped and chained to beds, and forced to eat their own vomit, it has been alleged at the royal commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse on Monday. The 17th public hearing of the royal commission began hearing from members of the stolen generations who say they were sexually abused at a Darwin home.
It’s examining how the government and administrators responded to the allegations of child sexual abuse by employees at the Retta Dixon home between 1946 and 1980, when it closed. Retta Dixon was one of the main government-run homes for children of mixed Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal descent forcibly removed from their families. Established by Christian missionaries in the 1930s, it also housed unmarried mothers and their babies, and temporary visitors. At its peak it held 120 people, according to the federal government’s 1997 Bringing Them Home report….

It is the first time the commission has held a hearing in the Northern Territory. It is also the first public hearing to predominantly involve Indigenous people. A number of Aboriginal women gave evidence at the inquiry into the Parramatta Girls Home and Hay Institute. Of all the people who have contacted the commission, 827 (18%) are Indigenous, the chief commissioner, Peter McClellan, said as he opened the public hearing on Monday morning. He added that 9% of people coming to private sessions are from Aboriginal communities. The inquiry into the Retta Dixon home is expected to run for about two weeks.

Vatican Arrests Former Archbishop On Child Abuse Charges September 24, 2014 Jozef Wesolowski is the first high-ranking Vatican official to face criminal charges for sexually abusing children. Steve Inskeep talks to Joshua McElwee of the National Catholic Reporter.
….Vatican City, the home of the Catholic Church, is also a tiny, independent nation with its own laws. And today, one of its citizens is under house arrest. The Vatican took former Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski into custody. He had already been defrocked in June. All of this follows allegations that he sexually abused young boys while he was the Vatican’s ambassador to the Dominican Republic. He’s going to stand trial on a Vatican criminal court. Joshua McElwee, who is Vatican bureau chief for The National Catholic Reporter, is covering this story.

….Well, the Vatican had acted a couple months ago. What they’d done is they laicized Wesolowski, who was an archbishop, which basically made him a normal Catholic. He’s no longer a priest. He’s no longer an archbishop. And now they’re saying that they’re prosecuting him according to the laws of the Vatican City State for, apparently, accusations of abuse in the Dominican Republic.

Priest indicted in Poland for child abuse  22.10.2014  A Polish priest accused of child abuse in both the Dominican Republic and Poland has been formally indicted in his native country.
Father Wojciech G.’s case has been referred to a district court in Wolomin, 12 miles east of the capital, according to Przemyslaw Nowak, spokesman for a public prosecutor’s office in Warsaw.
Nowak has confirmed that the priest stands accused of 10 offences, 8 of which relate to the sexual abuse of boys below the age of 15. “Two acts were committed in 2000-2001 in Poland, the others at various times over the years 2009-2013, in the Dominican Republic,” he outlined on Wednesday. Nowak also revealed that the priest is accused of possession of pornographic material involving minors, as well as the possesion of a firearm and ammunition without the necessary permits. “We have ample evidence in this case, including the testimonies of over 100 witnesses, and over a dozen reports by experts,” he noted. Father Wojciech G. was arrested near Krakow in February 2014, and he has remained in police custody since then. The clergyman has denied any wrongdoing since accusations first surfaced in 2013 in the Dominican Republic, where he had served as head of a parish in the highland town of Juncalito….,Priest-indicted-in-Poland-for-child-abuse-

Pope sacks Paraguay bishop accused of protecting abuser priest  Pope Francis’s latest crackdown on clerical sex abuse comes days after Vatican ordered Polish archbishop to be put on trial for allegedly abusing young boys
Livieres Plano, a member of the conservative Opus Dei movement, has been removed by Pope Francis from a Paraguayan diocese By Nick Squires, Rome  25 Sep 2014

Pope Francis has sacked a bishop in South America who for years protected a priest accused of sexual misconduct. The Pope, who has vowed to adopt a much tougher stance than his predecessors on priests accused of sexual abuse, forcibly removed Rogelio Ricardo Livieres Plano from his post as bishop of a diocese in Paraguay. The bishop is accused of protecting an Argentine priest whose former superiors in the United States had described as a “serious threat to young people.”
The bishop’s removal was the result of an investigation instigated by the Vatican earlier this year. He had refused to resign, leaving the Pope no option but to remove him in what the Vatican described in a statement as a “hard decision”….

Files on Winona Diocese clergy who abused children are made public  JEAN HOPFENSPERGER , Star Tribune  October 7, 2014  Newly unsealed papers expose child sexual abuse by 14 priests in the Winona Diocese. Winona Bishop John Quinn said the diocese “has worked diligently” to enforce abuse prevention protocols. The 14 priests worked in all four high schools in the Diocese of Winona and at 45 parishes across southern Minnesota. But the paper trail exposing their sexual abuse of boys and girls had long been sealed — until Tuesday, when a court order pried open the records.

For the first time, the priests’ mental health reports, sexual abuse complaints and hundreds more documents were made public as part of a groundbreaking lawsuit making its way through Ramsey District Court.
The documents also show that the Winona Diocese “anticipates eventual bankruptcy” as a result of that lawsuit and others being filed under the new Minnesota Child Victims Act.
The files indicate that the diocese did not report claims of child sex abuse to law enforcement, did not remove offenders from ministry, and continued to financially support them even as abuse was known.
The document release comes in response to a lawsuit filed last year by a man who said he was abused by former priest Thomas Adamson in the 1970s. Adamson was accused of molesting boys in the Winona Diocese before being transferred to the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, where he allegedly abused the man in St. Paul Park….

While many files about Adamson were released in recent months through the archdiocese lawsuit, the Winona documents shed light on a different set of offenders.
The sexual abuse ranged from oral sex to fondling to rape, the documents showed. Emotional abuse often accompanied the physical abuse.
For example, the Rev. Richard Hatch would force one of his boy victims to have oral sex and then make him go to confession and confess it as if he were the cause of it, documents showed.
Like other dioceses, Winona kept the priests on the move, even after serious allegation of abuse….

Deaf school group to honor Delavan man who helped expose priest abuse By Annysa Johnson of the Journal Sentinel     Oct. 13, 2014 Arthur Budzinski, a deaf man who helped expose one of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee’s most notorious child sexual abusers, the late Father Lawrence Murphy, will be honored Saturday by the Wisconsin School for the Deaf Alumni Association….
Budzinski was among dozens of boys molested by Murphy as children at the archdiocese’s St. John’s School for the Deaf in St. Francis between 1950 and 1974. One church psychologist estimated Murphy may have molested as many as 200 deaf children before he died in 1998.
Budzinski was among a group of alumni who had been pushing the church since the 1970s to remove Murphy and confront its failure to protect children. Their work has been documented by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and New York Times and was featured in the 2012 Alex Gibney documentary, “Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God.”
He is among the 575 men and women who have filed sex abuse claims in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee bankruptcy alleging they were molested by priests and others connected to the church as children….

Archdiocese of Chicago publishes 15,000 pages of documents detailing more than 350 incidents of child abuse from dozens of priests dating back to 1950
“We cannot change the past but we hope we can rebuild trust through honest and open dialogue,” wrote Francis Cardinal George on the website this week. “Child abuse is a crime and a sin.”
BY Marc Weinreich  NEW YORK DAILY NEWS  Published: Thursday, November 6, 2014
The Archdiocese of Chicago published approximately 15,000 pages of documents to its website on Thursday that detail how the organization internally dealt with dozens of priests over the course of more than half a century who had been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual misconduct with minors. In total, 36 archdiocesan priests were publicly named on Thursday in the documents, which can be seen here.  The Archdiocese of Chicago has named 66 priests in 2014 who had substantiated claims brought against them alleging sexual misconduct with a minor that date back to 1950.  The publication on Thursday comes after the ministry released documents in January detailing alleged sexual misconduct with minors involving 30 other priests.
The January release was the product of a mediation agreement conceived approximately six years ago by the archdiocese and attorney Jeff Anderson, who was representing victims of the 30 priests named in the first wave of files published earlier this year….

In the case of Rev. Alexander Baranowski, the priest allegedly sexually abused a victim for more than four years until the victim graduated from high school. He had reportedly provided alcohol to teenage girls on several occasions, and had taken each of them individually to a hotel room to engage in sexual acts. He had also taken boys with him on vacation and one of them accused him of “solicitation,” according to the documents.
“In short, Father thinks there is no sin, but imprudence,” wrote Monsignor F.W. Byrne in September 1963….

Archdiocese of Chicago  Clergy Sexual Misconduct with Minors  2014 Document Publication
The Archdiocese of Chicago has voluntarily released documents related to 36 Archdiocesan priests who have at least one substantiated allegation of sexual misconduct with a minor. These documents are in addition to those released in January on 30 other priests.

‘Jail archbishop who covered up my abuse’: Victims say nothing was done to stop paedophile priest     Very Reverend Robert Waddington sexually abused choirboys for decades
Inquiry into the abuse has slammed Lord Hope, former Archbishop of York
Report claims he was made aware of misconduct 19 times but did not act
Despite this – he still holds influential post and sits in the House of Lords
By Richard Marsden for the Daily Mail  23 October 2014
A former archbishop who failed to act on alleged crimes of a paedophile priest should be jailed, the abuser’s victims have said.
Lord Hope, the former Archbishop of York, did not act on 19 occasions when allegations of abuse or inappropriate conduct by the priest were raised with him, a scathing report revealed yesterday.
But despite that, Lord Hope remains as an honorary assistant bishop in the Diocese of Bradford.
Eli Ward and Bim Atkinson, who were among seven victims of the Very Reverend Robert Waddington, former Dean of Manchester, said it is ‘incredible’ that the man who did nothing to stop the priest has been allowed to keep his post.Waddington, who kept an official position in the church until 2005 and died in 2007, targeted young choirboys over several decades. One of the seven victims committed suicide in 1989….
Waddington then moved to York Minster, where more children were abused. He stayed in a lesser post there until 2005, despite the allegations made to Lord Hope, according to the report, which was commissioned by current Archbishop of York, the Most Reverend John Sentamu….
Robert Waddington died in 2007 – he had been accused of abusing seven different victims between 1955 and 1996….

Child abuse ‘rampant’ in British institutions, says Archbishop of Canterbury as he apologises for ‘significant legacy of unacknowledged cases’ in the Church of England
Archbishop said abuse has been ‘rampant’ in CoE and other institutions
Justin Welby said there is a ‘significant legacy of unacknowledged cases’
Made admissions in letter to mother of three boys abused at CoE school
By Sara Malm for MailOnline 26 October 2014
Child abuse has been ‘rampant’ in the Church of England and other British institutions, the Archbishop of Canterbury has said. Justin Welby also said there is a ‘significant legacy’ of cases of child abuse within the church which have been ignored and that its failure to hold abusers to account is ‘inexcusable’. Archbishop Welby made the admissions in a private letter to a mother of three boys who were abused at a Church of England school, reports Exaro, the investigative website.`

Church of England to examine 1950s records in child abuse investigation Justin Welby says personnel files will be searched for allegations of abuse as study into confessional confidentiality also launched    Michael White and Rajeev Syal The Guardian, Monday 27 October 2014  The Church of England is examining the personnel files of thousands of clergymen and women dating back to the 1950s as part of a wide-ranging investigation into historical allegations of child abuse, the archbishop of Canterbury has confirmed. The Most Rev Justin Welby, the principal leader of the Church of England, said that the move is part of a renewed effort to ensure that there are no allegations of abuse which have been ignored, overlooked or covered up. Following recent disclosures of evidence of child abuse within the church, Welby conceded that the investigations would show that “there is more that has not been revealed”…..

Miramonte: LA school district’s claim it shredded child abuse reports now in question Karen Foshay  September 25, 2014 Questions are being raised about the Los Angeles Unified School District’s claim earlier this year that it shredded 20 years’ worth of suspected child abuse reports in connection with the Miramonte abuse scandal.
In response to a judge’s questions, about 100 current and former members of L.A. Unified’s general counsel’s office said they had no knowledge of the records being destroyed, and district officials have not answered similar questions posed by KPCC.
In April, KPCC was the first to report that LAUSD officials said the suspected child abuse reports, or SCARs, were ordered destroyed in 2008 after the district’s general counsel concluded it was not legally allowed to hold on to them. The records dated back to 1988, according to a district spokesman. L.A. Unified made its comments about the documents after attorneys representing dozens of children suing the district over the actions of former Miramonte teacher Mark Berndt requested that the school district produce all of its suspected child abuse reports. In November 2013, Berndt pleaded no contest to 23 counts of lewd acts upon a child and was sentenced to 25 years in state prison….

‘Terror mixed with homesickness meant I cried myself to sleep, night after night‘ Ivan Yates Published 05/10/2014  In 1968 – as a very young boy, Ivan Yates was sent to a boarding school in Bray. In the early part of his book he describes his misery there -and the borderline abuse he suffered:
The worst aspect of it was the constant fear. Charles Mansfield, headmaster and owner of the school, flattered himself that he was a disciplinarian. In fact, he was a sadist, liberally administering corporal punishment for any infringement of a forest of rules. Beatings were meted out with a slipper or a hairbrush on bare buttocks.
In my second year, I was in a dormitory adjacent to the headmaster’s office. If we were caught talking at night or early in the morning, he would come in and beat us. It became a familiar ritual. When he came round to each bed, we would turn over, pull down our pyjamas and receive our beating, faces in our pillows, counting the blows. Some boys got punished much worse than I did. One boy was black and blue from constant thrashings. At eight and nine years old, I was out of my depth. It was unremitting torture.

As I grew up, I remembered the beatings, but not the overwhelming sadness. It took therapy for me to recall the day, when I was about 11, when Mr Mansfield asked me to come and see him in the French room.
When I arrived, he was in the room, alone, standing by a table in the corner. He asked me to pull up a chair and sit down in front of him, explaining that as part of his sex education duties, he had individual consultations with the boys. He needed to see that we were developing properly. He asked me to take down my trousers and pants, so that he could examine me. I vividly recall that we were standing so close together that I could see the tiny blood vessels on his cheeks and could smell him. I did as I was told.

High court to hear religious man’s child abuse case  Stephen Herzog, News-Leader September 28, 2014  Missouri’s Supreme Court will hear arguments this week regarding whether a Springfield man who practiced a certain type of Christianity is guilty of abusing his children.
Peter D. Hansen, 50, was convicted by a jury in 2011 of abusing one of his children by locking him in a bathroom “for days at a time” and restricting what the child could eat. Judge Dan Conklin suspended a three-year prison sentence and placed Hansen on five years probation with 100 days in the Greene County Jail.
Hansen, who is a Seventh Day Adventist, argues that his religion encourages vegetarianism and that the punishment of his children does not constitute child abuse….
Prosecutors say there is sufficient evidence to prove Hansen “inflicted cruel and inhuman punishment by locking the minors in a small, dark and cold bathroom for days at a time.” Prosecutors also say Hansen’s withholding of food was a cruel and inhuman punishment.
Hansen says the state’s evidence failed to prove either of those convictions….
Hansen said the children were bad and had bad attitudes and were being punished.
At that time, the children were taken into protective custody and the parents were arrested, according to court records.
The children were taken to the hospital where a doctor determined the children were “receiving inadequate calories for appropriate weight gain and growth.”
A nurse noted the boy’s ribs and shoulder blades were “visibly prominent,” according to court records….

Jehovah’s Witness congregation sued for alleged child abuse      Two Vt. sisters claim repeated molestation in the 1990s By Stewart Ledbetter Sep 30, 2014  BURLINGTON, Vt. —Two women filed lawsuits Tuesday in state and federal courts alleging they were sexually abused as youngsters by an authority figure at their Jehovah’s Witness congregation in Bellows Falls in the mid-1990s, and claiming church elders did nothing to stop it.  The litigation, announced in Burlington, involves sisters Miranda and Annessa Lewis….
Lewis said she was 4 years old when she was first molested and fondled by…a “ministerial servant” in the congregation. Zalkin said that position is one approved by church elders.
She said her sister, Annessa, who now lives in Texas, was similarly assaulted….

“The Jehovah’s Witnesses have a policy – a policy that is grounded in a code of silence,” Zalkin said, describing a secretive organization that regards protecting its own image as paramount even to protecting its children. When the girls’ mother says she confronted church leaders with abuse allegations, in 1995 or 1996, they were called liars.  Mauvoleon-Folsom said the family immediately left the congregation.
Miranda Lewis said the abuse has caused ongoing anxiety, depression, and a range of other psychological issues. She now lives in Chester with her mother.
The Lewis sisters are seeking compensatory and punitive damages from…, the Bellows Falls congregation and from the national parent organization called the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, based in Brooklyn, N.Y….
Zalkin said his investigators have uncovered indications that the Lewis girls were not….first victims.

Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Child Sex Abuse Cases Bring Religion’s Practices Into Question By Sami K. Martin , Christian Post Reporter October 8, 2014  The Jehovah’s Witnesses have a silent epidemic of child abuse that was recently brought to public attention again after four alleged victims filed lawsuits against the organization.
There are over 7 million Jehovah’s Witnesses across the globe, according to the group’s website. However, there have been numerous accusations and cases brought against elders and leaders of the organization, alleging child abuse of both young men and women, dating back at least 30 years. Four reported victims brought a lawsuit against the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Watchtower Organization in Connecticut….
One particular case in 2012 saw Candace Conti, a victim, receive awarded $28 million in damages after alleging that member Jonathan Kendrick molested her from 1995-1996. The case was filed in Oakley, California and the $28 million award was the largest paid to a single victim….
The Jehovah’s Witnesses have plenty of information on their website about how to keep children safe from predators, but take a unique approach to dealing with cases of accused abuse. When an allegation against a member or elder is made, the organization follows a “two-witness rule,” which requires that there be two victims made. They claim that they follow Biblical principles when it comes to the rule and cite Scripture such as 1 Timothy 5:19 and Deuteronomy 19:15, which speak of having two persons come forward when making an accusation….

Jehovah’s Witnesses Church to pay $13.5M for alleged child abuse November 1, 2014 by Ellina Abovian SAN DIEGO — Jose Lopez was awarded a $13.5 million judgment Wednesday from the head of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Church for alleged sexual abuse by Gonzalo Campos of the Linda Vista Spanish Congregation and Playa Pacifica in Pacific Beach.
Lopez, 36, claims that the abuse began around 1986, when his mother enrolled him at age 7 in bible study classes with Campos….
Lopez’s mother went to the heads of the congregation but said that the allegations were overlooked.
“If they don’t get a confession from the perpetrator or they don’t get two eye witnesses to the abuse…under their policies and practices, they will do nothing,” Zalkin said.
After years of staying quiet, Lopez filed a lawsuit against Campos and the church in 2012.
He is one of eight children who have accused Campos of sexually abusing them between 1982 and 1995, according to his lawsuit against the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, the entity that oversees Jehovah’s Witnesses churches.
During the litigation, the head church in New York refused to provide documents and witnesses, Zalkin said….
Associate General Counsel for Watchtower Mario Moreno commented in a statement: “Jehovah’s Witnesses abhor child abuse and strive to protect children from such acts. The trial judge’s decision is a drastic action for any judge to take given the circumstances of this case. We will seek a full review of this case on appeal.”
Zalkin said Campos moved to Mexico soon after allegations against him began to surface….

Child abuse search warrants ‘refused on age of information’ By Sally Chidzoy & David Keller BBC News  5 October 2014  Delays in a police force receiving details on child abuse suspects from the UK agency tackling such abuse online, has led to search warrants being refused, it has emerged.
Bedfordshire Police said it tried to search homes as part of the global child exploitation sting Project Spade.  But magistrates refused permission, saying the 17-month delay meant the information was too old, police said….
Toronto Police in Canada gave the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) details about 2,345 UK suspects in July 2012 after they were caught buying suspect videos online….
But the images were graded as the lowest risk and were not passed from CEOP onto local police forces for more than a year. That decision is currently the subject of an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). Since then high profile abusers have emerged from these suspects, including a Cambridge doctor who preyed on terminally ill children and a Southend teacher who filmed his pupils undressing. The BBC has learned 153 suspects from Project Spade come from the East of England, according to figures from seven out of eight of the region’s police forces.

Ex-DJ Ray Teret ‘raped girl with Jimmy Savile’  7 October 2014  Ray Teret was a friend of Jimmy Savile  A former radio DJ raped a 15-year-old girl “acting together” with Jimmy Savile, a court has been told. Ray Teret, 72, from Altrincham, Greater Manchester, was a flatmate of Savile’s and worked for him as his chauffeur. Mr Teret is facing more than 30 charges of sex abuse dating to the 1960s, including 18 counts of rape, all of which he denies.  He is on trial with two other men, William Harper and Alan Ledger, who also deny the charges against them. The two defendants were described at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court as “friends and associates” of Mr Teret. ‘Used celebrity’
Mr Teret had worked as a DJ for pirate station Radio Caroline and Piccadilly Radio in Manchester. The charges against him include rape, attempted rape and indecent assault….

Council sent abused girl back home to rapist father 2 October 2014  Bradford Metropolitan Council has paid £160,000 to a woman who was sent from a care home back to live with the father who had already raped her. Sarah* gave evidence against her father in court about the rapes, which took place from the age of ten, but he was acquitted. She was then sent back to live with him, where she was repeatedly raped, fell pregnant and gave birth to his child. He was eventually imprisoned, but Sarah, now 25, said her torment would “never end” because her baby was fathered by the man who made her life “miserable”. Bradford Metropolitan Council said they were “deeply sorry for not doing enough” to keep Sarah safe, and agreed a settlement of £160,000 for her “terrible ordeal”….

Child abuse inquiry to examine claims John Major’s government failed to act Information about abuse at children’s home frequented by Cyril Smith was allegedly received but not acted upon    Rajeev Syal The Guardian, Tuesday 14 October 2014
The independent inquiry into the apparent failure of politicians and public bodies to investigate historical sex abuse will examine allegations that John Major’s government failed to act when it was informed of widespread abuse at a children’s home frequented by the late paedophile MP Cyril Smith.
The inquiry has been told that in 1995, detailed claims of rape and sexual grooming of pupils at Knowl View school were sent to the office of Gillian Shephard, the then education secretary.
But instead of intervening, senior civil servants referred the dossier back to the council, the Guardian has learned. Shephard, who is now a baroness, confirmed that her office received the file but insists she knew nothing about it.

Paperwork from the Department for Education about the dossier has been passed on to the Home Office institutional abuse enquiry, headed by Fiona Woolf. She is examining allegations that figures in Westminster and Whitehall were implicated in the failure to protect children.
The same paperwork has also been referred to Greater Manchester police, the force that has launched a criminal investigation into an alleged coverup of child abuse at a Knowl View and the decision not to prosecute Smith.
Dozens of former pupils from Knowl View have come forward to say they were abused at the school. Smith, who died in 2010, is alleged to have assaulted several children at the school….

Child abuse survivors tell Theresa May: inquiry must have full force of law
Victims call for Fiona Woolf’s successor to be given statutory powers over witnesses and evidence  Child protection  The Observer  Jamie Doward and Daniel Boffey Saturday 1 November 2014
home secretary Theresa May is coming under new pressure to redraft the terms of the independent inquiry into child abuse so that it has powers to compel witnesses to give evidence and see those who give false statements prosecuted.
The potentially huge shift in the scope and the nature of the inquiry, hinted at by government-appointed lawyers to the inquiry when they met survivors of abuse on Friday, would go some way to addressing concerns that it will be little more than a whitewash.

The current inquiry has been plunged into chaos after its second chair, Fiona Woolf, resigned on Friday after accepting that abuse survivors had lost confidence in her ability to conduct the investigation impartially. Her resignation followed concerns over her links with the former home secretary, Lord Brittan, who has been accused of failing to act on a dossier of paedophile allegations in the 1980s. Woolf’s departure was a huge blow for the government after the inquiry’s previous chair, Baroness Butler-Sloss, also quit.
The former attorney general, Dominic Grieve MP, said on Saturday that May might need to look abroad for someone to chair the inquiry into historical child sex abuse, in order for the victims to have full confidence that it is independent of the British establishment….

Greater Manchester police ‘failed to pursue child abuse gang claims’ Detectives say they identified offenders and victims more than a decade ago but no action was taken, says ITV investigation
Jamie Orme The Guardian, Tuesday 14 October 2014   Child sex grooming gangs have avoided prosecution due to a failure by one of the country’s biggest police forces to pursue claims against them, it has been alleged, threatening to reignite the debate over institutional neglect of young victims of sexual abuse.
Greater Manchester police (GMP), the third largest force in England and Wales, has been accused by serving and former detectives of attempting to cover up failings to tackle gangs of Asian men who were abusing young girls, according to an ITV News investigation.
A former detective constable with the force has come forward to reveal she named and identified offenders and victims more than a decade ago in an internal report but no action was taken.
Responding to the claims, GMP chief constable Sir Peter Fahy told ITV that officers had developed a “mindset” that victims in sexual abuse cases were “unreliable” but, while this had since changed, it was still present within the courts….
The claims against GMP come just months after a damning report found at least 1,400 children were subjected to sexual exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013, with “blatant” collective failings by the council and South Yorkshire police blamed for the abuse….
Another GMP detective, who has remained anonymous, looked at the issue six years later and revealed there was reluctance by senior officers to investigate sexual abuse claims despite her warnings the problem was spiralling out of control….

Rotherham child sexual abuse scandal is tip of iceberg, says police chief  Child exploitation is a hidden crime, and offences at home are the biggest concern, says Norfolk chief constable Simon Bailey
Randeep Ramesh, Social affairs editor  The Guardian, Wednesday 15 October 2014
There will be more Rotherham-style child sexual exploitation scandals unearthed in the coming months as the “stone is lifted” on the scale of abuse perpetuated on the young, one of Britain’s top police officers has warned. In an interview with the Guardian, Simon Bailey, chief constable of Norfolk police, who is the leading officer concerned with child abuse within the Association of Chief Police Officers, said that sex crimes involving children had for “too long been a hidden crime”.
He also sparked a clash with fellow professionals by calling on teachers and doctors to take on more responsibility over detecting signs of abuse.

Bailey warned that the scale of the problem was far larger than previously thought, with the latest research estimating that the number of children suffering sexual abuse at some point in their childhood could be as high as 600,000. “We don’t know for sure. But I think it’s tens of thousands of victims [a year] of an appalling crime.”….
The concern of the police is that it is not gangs that are the biggest problem when it comes to sexual abuse, but the home.
Bailey said: “[This fixation] is rather overshadowing a far, far, bigger picture, and that bigger picture is that 90% of child sexual abuse takes place in the home where crimes are being perpetuated upon victims by people they know already. It is really important that we get some context around this.”….

Rotherham child abuse scandal: Missing files ‘fuel public suspicion of a deliberate cover-up’, say MPs  MPs accuse council and police of ignoring credible warnings Nigel Morris Author Biography
Deputy Political Editor  Saturday 18 October 2014
Fears of a “deliberate cover-up” by public officials of the sexual abuse of children in Rotherham have been fuelled by the large number of documents detailing the scandal which have vanished, an investigation by MPs has concluded.
They urged the Home Office to launch an immediate search for the missing paperwork and to examine claims that files warning about the activities of paedophile rings were stolen from a locked council office in the South Yorkshire town.
In a report published on Saturday, the Commons home affairs select committee said the “shocking” failure to act on repeated warnings of systematic exploitation had exposed more victims to abuse.
At least 1,400 girls as young as 11 were groomed and abused by gangs in the town over a 16 year period and new victims continue to come forward.

The committee, in its second inquiry into Rotherham, said there was “compelling evidence” that the town’s council and South Yorkshire Police ignored “numerous, credible warnings about the scale of child sexual exploitation”.
And it raised suspicions that officials colluded to conceal evidence which could have uncovered the scandal years before it came to light.
The MPs heard private evidence from a former researcher who was hired by Rotherham Council to find ways of catching men who tried to lure girls and vulnerable young women into prostitution….

Rotherham child abuse scandal: Shamed former children’s services boss gets £40,000 pay-off
Oct 18, 2014     By Karen Rockett Joyce Thacker has been given the pay-off as she was named as one of the people singled out for criticism in a new report into the child sex abuse scandal
Shamed former Rotherham children’s services boss Joyce Thacker has received a £40,000 pay-off.
The revelation comes as Mrs Thacker is among key figures in the town’s child sex abuse scandal singled out for criticism in a new report. Mrs Thacker agreed the five-figure sum as a pay-off for leaving her £130,000 per year job, which took immediate effect last month. Furious abuse victims said Mrs Thacker should donate her pay-off to the Rotherham Women’s Counselling Service….
Mrs Thacker was criticised in Home Affairs Select Committee report, which has also called for an independent investigation to be launched by the Home Office. It says the probe should focus on whether there was a “deliberate cover-up” after files relating to the town’s child sexual exploitation problems were stolen from the office of a council researcher in 2002. MPs on the committee, which called for Mrs Thacker to resign a week before she left, also concluded South Yorkshire Police and Rotherham Council had “ignored numerous credible warnings about the scale of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham”….
Mrs Thacker had faced repeated calls to resign or be sacked in the wake of the Jay Report, which revealed at least 1,400 children in had been sexually exploited between 1997 and 2013….

Rotherham child abuse was raised ‘at highest level’ 26 October 2014
Child abuse in Rotherham was raised “at the highest level” as far back as 2002 but officials apparently pressured a researcher to change her report.
The then chief constable Mike Hedges and the council’s director of education Di Billups were among those said to have been warned by the researcher. Documents detailing her concerns, shown to the home affairs select committee in private, have been seen by the BBC.
The researcher said it was “a tragedy” her evidence was not looked at in 2002.
In her report to the committee the researcher, initially employed by the council to investigate prostitution, said she was pressured to present her findings in a way that presented services in Rotherham in “a better light”.

Scale of abuse
The researcher claimed she had “repeatedly” tried to raise concerns at senior levels “in the police force, social care and education”.
The scale of child abuse in Rotherham was not revealed until this year when Professor Alexis Jay’s report found at least 1400 children had been exploited….
Still concerned that children were being abused on a “daily” basis, the researcher submitted some of her evidence to Home Office evaluators.
That evidence is now missing. The researcher claimed there was a “raid” on her office the weekend after she submitted the evidence.
On coming into work, she claimed she found that all of the data relating to the Home Office work had been removed from filing cabinets. Documents on the office computer had been deleted, while others were created detailing the minutes of meetings….
Evidence submitted by a former Home Office researcher
I am enclosing 3 copies of the documentary evidence that I think will assist the Select Committee prior to and during my attendance on 9 September 2014

Rotherham child sex abuse: Police ‘ripped up files’  10 November 2014 Police in Rotherham tore up paperwork relating to one child sex abuse victim and stopped another from being medically examined, the BBC has been told. One woman claimed a policeman called her a liar after she reported being abused aged 15, and the other alleges police prevented her being examined after she was abused aged 13.
Both were speaking to BBC Inside Out.
South Yorkshire Police said both cases were now with the police watchdog.
A report in September by Prof Alexis Jay found 1,400 children had been abused in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013 by men of mainly Pakistani heritage.
The abuse they suffered included beatings, rape and trafficking to various towns and cities in England.
Two women told BBC Inside Out Yorkshire that police not only ignored, but actively obstructed investigations into their abuse.
The two cases happened eight years apart. The women, given the pseudonyms Jenny and Carol, are part of a group of 32 preparing to sue South Yorkshire Police and Rotherham Council.
Their cases span nearly two decades from the 1990s until 2007.

11 held as child abuse gang smashed  By Press Association 28 October 2014
A suspected child sex abuse gang has been smashed by police officers as part of a crackdown on exploitation of young girls. Eleven people have been arrested under Operation Heliodor in the south Manchester area, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said. The suspected abusers, a ged between 19 and 38, have been arrested for alleged offences including sexual activity with a child, attempted indecent assault, inciting child prostitution, abduction and rape.
The arrests come at a time of increased scrutiny over the way police forces, including Greater Manchester, deal with child sexual exploitation allegations in the wake of damning reports and claims that widespread abuse of children was effectively ignored by officers for years.
Operation Heliodor is part of Project Phoenix, a multi-agency campaign tackling child sexual exploitation in the Greater Manchester area.
The arrests came after interventions from a multi-agency team into sexual exploitation of girls and its links to organised crime in and around the Longsight area of Manchester, as well as other areas….

Police handling of child abuse intelligence to be investigated  12 November 2014
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) will examine how Essex, North Wales and North Yorkshire handled information from Canadian police passed to the UK in 2012.
Around 2,000 names were sent by Toronto Police to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP). The three forces referred themselves to the IPCC for investigation…. BBC News obtained figures in October suggesting many forces had at that time only arrested around a third of the names among the Canadian intelligence….

Government gave money to notorious Paedophile Information Exchange on the orders of Special Branch, claims Home Office whistleblower
Former government employee says he saw evidence PIE was given grant
He claims the money was paid to group under orders of Special Branch
Insider says he thought funding was ‘inappropriate and outrageous’ but his pleas were shrugged off by his boss at the time
Follows report which found that abuse ring ‘might have been covered up’
By Richard Spillett 12 November 2014  A Home Office whistleblower today repeated his claims the government department funded the notorious Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE) on the orders of the police. Former civil servant Tim Hulbert said money was transferred to the organisation on the orders of the Metropolitan Police’s Special Branch. Mr Hulbert worked in the Voluntary Services Unit of the Home Office which approved grants to various outside organisations in the late 1970s and early 80s. He said he went to his manager after seeing that funding was being given to PIE – the lobby group formed in the 1970s to campaign for a reduction in the age of consent – but his concerns were shrugged off….

‘It was an organisation that was campaigning for the reduction of the age of consent to four. I thought that was inappropriate and outrageous and for a government department to be funding it, I thought was wrong. ‘I went to see my boss and he told me, firstly, that PIE was a legitimate campaigning organisation and it did have significant links to the National Council for Civil Liberties and other organisations that were recognised. ‘Secondly, I was told that it was being funded a the request of Special Branch.’
….Mr Hulbert’s comments followed claims by an investigative journalist that Home Office papers he saw – which suggested an investigation into the alleged child abuse ring was later carried out – were seized by Special Branch. Don Hale yesterday revealed he was given a bundle of documents which included the identities of senior politicians who were actively promoting the Paedophile Information Exchange by the late Labour minister Baroness Castle. He said police later arrived at his newspaper office, pushed him against a wall and demanded to take possession of the dossier. His claims are now being investigated by the Metropolitan Police….

In Britain, Child Sex Abuse Defies Easy Stereotypes  By KATRIN BENNHOLD OCT. 21, 2014
LONDON — First there was abuse at the hands of a popular BBC host. There were scandals at private schools and in the church and talk of a pedophile ring in Parliament. Then there was Rotherham: over a thousand teenagers sexually exploited as the authorities looked away.
Over the past two years, high-profile revelations of sexual abuse of children have painted a picture of Britain as a place where such abuse is not just endemic but systematically covered up — either because the perpetrators are of the very highest status or because the victims are of the very lowest.
There are two lessons here, scholars and officials say. The first is that sexual abuse is far more common than previously believed: Currently, 2,500 children in England have child protection plans because they are deemed to be at risk of sexual abuse. But the police now speak publicly of “tens of thousands” of victims a year.
The second lesson is that the main driver of abuse is impunity: “Abuse happens in a context of permissibility,” said Helen Beckett, an expert on the subject at the University of Bedfordshire.
Whether Britain’s lingering class system has made abuse more permissible is an open question, she said. But fixating on a particular stereotype — the white celebrity or the pedophile priest or the Pakistani taxi driver — may allow other perpetrators to go undetected.

In 2012, it emerged that Jimmy Savile, a former children’s television host and BBC staple who died in 2011, had raped scores of children as colleagues and the police turned a blind eye. Mr. Savile, who was a friend of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, used his charity work to gain access to his victims in schools and hospitals. Since then, Rolf Harris, 84, once a popular television entertainer; Max Clifford, 71, a well-known publicist; and Stuart Hall, 84, another former BBC broadcaster, have been among those convicted for offenses involving children.
Meanwhile, in July, Britons learned of allegations that Cyril Smith, a former member of Parliament who died in 2010, abused boys in a care home in his constituency. The allegations against him and others were detailed in a file prepared three decades ago by a crusading lawmaker who described a pedophile ring of “big, big names.” But the file mysteriously disappeared….

Westminster child abuse gang ‘linked to boy’s murder’  Detectives looking at historical sex assault claims are now working with homicide officers Paul Gallagher Author Biography , Nigel Morris
Friday 14 November 2014 Detectives investigating allegations of an organised paedophile ring involving former government ministers and senior police officers are examining links to a possible murder, Scotland Yard confirmed today. The Met said detectives from its Operation Fairbank historic child abuse investigation command were now working with homicide officers in a new investigation called Operation Midland.
The Independent understands the victim is a boy and the person alleged to be responsible for his death in the 1980s is not a politician.
….A victim of the alleged paedophile ring said that “former senior military and political figures” as well as “law enforcement” were involved. He claims he was abused for almost a decade after his father handed him over to the group.
He told the BBC: “They controlled my life for the next nine years. They created fear that penetrated every part of me. That was part of my life day in and day out. You didn’t question what they wanted; you didn’t hesitate to do what they asked you to do.

“You did what you were told without question or the punishments were very severe. They had no hesitation in doing what they wanted to do. Some of them were quite open about who they were. They had no fear at all of being caught, it didn’t even cross their mind. They could do anything they wanted without question and we were told that.”
….Tom Watson, the Labour MP who used parliamentary privilege in 2012 to raise claims of a paedophile ring linked to Downing Street, said: “This is obviously a very significant allegation. We must give the police the time, space and resources to investigate it fully.”….

UK Police Open Murder Inquiry in Establishment Child Sex Abuse Investigation By Reuters 11/14/14
Police looking into accusations that powerful figures at the heart of the British establishment were involved in child sex abuse in the 1970s and 1980s said on Friday they were now investigating murder allegations. London detectives launched an inquiry two years ago into allegations about paedophile rings involving politicians, officials and other senior public figures. “Our inquiries into this, over subsequent weeks, have revealed further information regarding possible homicide,” London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
….a review into the disappearance of a dossier handed to the government 30 years ago which is believed to have implicated public figures in child abuse found there was no evidence it had been deliberately destroyed or kept from police.

Sexual Offences Bill to be published next week, says Minister for Justice Legislation will strengthen laws on grooming, pornography and harassment  New legislation on sexual offences will strengthen laws on grooming, pornography and harassment, Minister for Justice Fiona Gartland Thu, Nov 13, 2014  ….“It will include strengthened provisions on age of consent, grooming and harassment,” Ms Fitzgerald said. “And it will strengthen offences of acquiring pornography online.”
The department received approval from the Cabinet to draft the legislation last December. It had been described as “long overdue” by organisations working in the field and by politicians including Senator Jillian van Turnhout. The Minister also said yesterday that she would bring forward legislation on victims’ rights and on domestic violence in the new year….
Victims’ rights The new victims’ rights legislation will be introduced in 2015 so that Ireland can comply with its obligations under the EU victims’ directive, which was adopted at European level in 2012. The directive includes obligations to protect victims from harm and intimidation and provide access to information, services and compensation. Ms Fitzgerald said the new legislation would be “a very important mark of a change of approach to victims” and would reposition victims so their needs are central to the criminal justice system….

Home Office creates child porn database to speed up police investigations into abuse of minors Oct 16, 2014     By Olivia Solon The Child Abuse Image Database will help speed up investigations into child sexual exploitation The UK Home Office has launched a national Child Abuse Image Database to help police share information and speed up the identification of both child victims of sexual abuse and their abusers….
New material is usually of particular concern as it suggest new abuse – and police need to focus their attentions on those cases….
The launch comes after reports have revealed that individuals with a sexual interest in children who produce and distribute child abuse material are becoming more entrepreneurial – using hidden services like Tor, private peer-to-peer networks and digital currencies that are difficult to track, such as Bitcoin. There is also a trend for abuse being carried out remotely on demand and then livestreamed back to paying customer. These webcam sessions usually allow a paedophile to make requests for certain types of abuse to be carried out on their behalf – the victim can often be thousands of miles away in parts of the world where the law doesn’t protect children as well….

Georgetown rabbi accused of voyeurism is focus of other allegations By Michelle Boorstein and Pamela Constable October 20   The case of a Georgetown rabbi accused of secretly videotaping women in the ritual bath expanded significantly Monday when a national rabbinical board said it had known since at least 2012 of complaints by women converts of inappropriate behavior.
The news triggered an outpouring by converts and advocates for women in Modern Orthodoxy who said the case reflected deeply embedded problems with sexism….
But on Monday, the Rabbinical Council of America — the country’s main group for Modern Orthodox rabbis — said it had received reports going back at least two years that women working with Freundel toward becoming Jewish felt coerced into performing clerical work for him and donating money to a tribunal he led. There was also an allegation that he inappropriately acted as a co-signer on a checking account with one woman….
More female converts began speaking out Monday, including those who converted with Freundel and said he abused the power he had over them as the sole arbiter of their conversions….

Sugarman said Freundel made “constant” comments praising her appearance, asked about her dating life and encouraged her “not to dress so modestly,” she said.
She said other younger female converts had the same complaints and that Kesher’s leadership was informed. “They spoke with him and he promised he’d stop, but it literally never stopped, not even for one day.”….

Anti-Abuse Activist Joey Diangello Dies of Overdose, But His Legacy Lives On
Former Satmar Hasid Buried in Monsey Community He Left   Survivor of Abuse: In 2009, Joey Diangello, who says he was abused as a child in a Brooklyn Hasidic community, lobbied the New York State legislature for a bill to extend the statute of limitations for claims of sexual abuse. By Hody Nemes Published October 23, 2014, issue of October 31, 2014.
As a teenager, Joey Diangello, a self-described survivor of child sex abuse, left the insular Satmar Hasidic community of Williamsburg, in Brooklyn, where he’d grown up and plunged into the world of heavy metal music….
But in death, Diangello, a co-founder of the group Survivors for Justice, which seeks to expose child sexual abuse in the Orthodox community — where it is often repressed — returned to the ultra-Orthodox enclave of Monsey, New York. On October 19, he was buried in a cemetery there under the birth name he abandoned long ago: Yoel Deutsch….
When he was 7 years old, Diangello entered a mikveh, a ritual bathhouse, on Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn. Allegedly, while he was in the water, a man whose face he never saw raped him. “I think when that person raped me, he murdered my Jewish soul,” Diangello told PIX11 in 2009….
Diangello stopped going to the mikveh, though he kept the alleged rape a secret. At age 17 he broke with his family and left the Satmar community.

By 2009, Diangello was ready to revisit his old life. When he helped found Survivors for Justice, he spoke out publicly about his own trauma.
He also demonstrated and lobbied in favor of the “Markey Bill,” state legislation aimed at expanding the statute of limitations for victims to sue individuals and institutions responsible for child sexual abuse in New York State. Currently, the state maintains particularly short time limits, though children who are abused often do not understand and confront their abuse until well into adulthood. The bill, which has passed the state assembly several times, would also offer a one-time window for victims of older crimes to pursue their cases. It has repeatedly failed to pass the State Senate….
In a 2009 interview with NPR, Diangello described his outlook by citing a song by his favorite heavy metal band. In Metallica’s “Broken, Beaten & Scarred,” he noted, “one of the verses is: ‘They scratched me, they scraped me, they cut and raped me.’ And that’s my life right there. When I listen to it, it gives me strength.”….

Does reality TV have a pedophile problem? By Hollie McKay October 27, 2014
LOS ANGELES –  TLC canceled ”Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” on Friday after photos surfaced of star Mama June hanging out with a convicted child molester.
In August, “Sons of Guns” star Will Hayden was arrested on multiple rape charges against minors. His daughter, another star on the show, then told “Dr. Phil” that she too had been touched inappropriately. Discovery, which owns TLC, swiftly canceled that show, too.
In 2013, reality TV producer Donald Luciano – who worked on some episodes of OWN’s reality program “Beverly’s Full House” about the life of former supermodel Beverly Johnson – pled guilty to possession of images of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct….

Mama June’s history of dating sex offenders: Father of Honey Boo Boo’s sister Chubbs served time for sexually exploiting a child over the internet
Child molester Mark McDaniel isn’t the first sex offender that June Shannon has dated
The father of Jessica ‘Chubbs’ Shannon served over two years in prison for the sexual exploitation of a child over the internet in 2005
Michael Anthony Ford, 37, remains on the sex offender registry and is currently behind bars on a separate charge of child abandonment
McDaniel has reportedly got back together with Mama June and has been photographed with her and her daughter, nine-year-old Honey Boo Boo
By David Mccormack and Lydia Warren for MailOnline  28 October 2014
….According to prison records, Ford is currently behind bars on a separate child abandonment charge.
The fathers of Shannon’s other children also have criminal records but rather than being sex-related their crimes included arson and burglary.

Alana’s father, David Michael ‘Sugar Bear’ Thompson, was sentenced to five years in 1998 for robbing a series of campsites and setting fire to another.
Anna’s father, David Dunn, did time in 1995 for stealing a handgun and again in 1998 for stealing a carton of cigarettes. The father of Laury is said to be unknown, even by Mama June.
A police report has revealed the sickening sexual assaults Mama June’s eldest daughter allegedly suffered at the hands of her boyfriend when she was just eight.
The March 2003 report, seen by RadarOnline, reveals how Anna ‘Chickadee’ Shannon told authorities in Spalding County, Georgia that she had done the ‘S word’ with Mark McDaniel.
She also told police that her mother’s boyfriend touched her inappropriately, made her touch him inappropriately and forced her to perform a sex act on him. When she told him to stop, he would not.
Anna, who appeared on ‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’ with her mother and siblings, has since revealed that when she first told her mother about the abuse, Mama June refused to believe her.
McDaniel was sentenced to 10 years behind bars after pleading guilty to child molestation. He left prison in March and has reportedly been seeing Mama June again.

The abuse came to light after Anna told her elementary school teacher that her stepfather had assaulted her. She was able to describe the assaults in graphic detail, the report notes.
The molestation was carried out multiple times between April and October 2002, according to the report. It took Anna months to speak out about the abuse because McDaniel had threatened to kill her if she told, RadarOnline reported. ‘Anna stated that Mark told her not to tell because he would not like her anymore,’ Beach continued. ‘Anna advised she got tired of holding it in and had to tell.’ ….Mama June has denied that she is dating the child molester. ‘The statement of me dating a sex offender is totally untrue,’ she said in a video posted at the weekend. ‘I would not ever, ever, ever, ever put my kids in danger.’….

Mama June’s Molester Former Boyfriend Threatened To Kill Daughter Anna If She Spoke Up About Sex Abuse Posted on Oct 28, 2014  Former Here Comes Honey Boo Boo star Mama June Shannon’s child molester then-boyfriend sexually abused her daughter, Anna Cardwell, for at least six months when she was just 8 years old. But the terrified little girl didn’t come forward until nearly a year later. And now, can reveal why. According to court papers obtained by Radar, Mark McDaniel, 53, took extreme, sick measures to prevent his innocent victim from telling anyone about his disgusting behavior in 2002. In the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office incident report obtained exclusively by Radar, police officer Bauch noted that a very brave Cardwell— now a 20-year-old married mom of Kaitlyn, 2— first told her teacher about the abuse on March 28, 2003…..

Anna Marie Cardwell: ‘I Would Feel Hurt’ If Mama June Is Dating My Molester
By Aaron Parsley 10/25/2014  Anna Marie Cardwell is speaking out about being molested as a child, years before she and her family became the stars of TLC’s hit reality show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.
In an interview with PEOPLE, June Shannon’s oldest daughter, now 20, says registered sex offender Mark McDaniel “would try and touch me and all that stuff” when she was 8 years old and he was dating her mother….
In a recent Facebook post, Shannon denied she and McDaniel (who was released from a Georgia prison in March after serving a 10-year sentence for aggravated child molestation) are currently romantically involved….

Mama June’s other daughter was present during sister’s sexual abuse October 29, 2014
More disturbing details have emerged about the abuse June “Mama June” Shannon’s kids suffered at the hands of her then-live-in boyfriend Mark McDaniel. According to newly released court documents, not just Anna Cardwell- – who has spoken about McDaniel molesting her– was affected by the pedophile her mother was dating. The documents posted by Radar Online reveal Shannon’s then three-year-old daughter had to watch McDaniel sexually abuse her older sister. A police report from 2004 details an interview Cardwell, now 20, had with an official from the Division of Family and Children Services. In the interview, Cardwell stated that she was forced to have sex with McDaniel. “Anna then stated that her sister… is in the bed with them when this is going on,” the court documents detail….

Cardwell, who now has a child of her own, told People magazine her mother didn’t believe her when she spoke out about the abuse. According to court documents, she first revealed what she had gone through to a teacher at her school.
“A week or so after it happened, I talked to Mama and she was upset, crying and saying, ‘I don’t believe you,'” she recalled. “And I was like, ‘Mama, he did that to me and I can’t do anything about it. You were never there to see it. You were always at work.'”
McDaniel went to jail for aggravated child molestation and was released in March. He has since been photographed with June Shannon, which prompted TLC to cancel “Honey Boo Boo.”

Rwanda: Where Are the Victims of Human Trafficking Taken? 9 October 2014  By Athan Tashobya
Most victims of human trafficking in the country are taken into forced marriage, labour and prostitution, Police said yesterday. Speaking at a news briefing, ACP Tony Kuramba, the deputy commissioner of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and director of Interpol-Rwanda, said the majority of the victims were taken to Uganda and Asia. “In most cases, these victims of human trafficking are taken for forced marriage, prostitution and forced labour, we have heard cases in China, Malaysia, Thailand and Dubai, and we are following them closely,” Kuramba said during a media briefing on the forthcoming national dialogue on human trafficking at Parliament Buildings yesterday.
The dialogue, at which First Lady Jeannette Kagame is expected to officiate, is slated for tomorrow in Kigali. Kuramba said 153 cases of human trafficking were registered since 2009, with some of them involving traffickers who use Rwanda as a transit route for victims heading to other countries….

Thousands of Yazidi women sold as sex slaves ‘for theological reasons’, says Isil Article in Islamic State’s English-language online magazine Dabiq not only admits selling Yazidi women into sex slavery but justifies it according to the theological rulings of early Islam  By Richard Spencer 13 Oct 2014   Islamic State jihadists have given detailed theological reasons justifying why they have taken thousands of women from the Iraqi Yazidi minority and sold them into sex slavery.
A new article in the Islamic State English-language online magazine Dabiq not only admits the practice but justifies it according to the theological rulings of early Islam.
“After capture, the Yazidi women and children were then divided according to the Sharia amongst the fighters of the Islamic State who participated,” the article says.
It says there is a difference between women from Muslim sects the jihadists regard as heretical, who can be considered as “apostates”, and the so-called mushrikin – polytheists and pagans.
“Their women could be enslaved, unlike female apostates.”
The women were seized when the group swept across parts of northern Iraq in early August….

Brazil: 55 arrested in child abuse crackdown i24news Published October 16th 2014 Police managed to tap into the ‘Darknet’, following on methods developed by the FBI, Scotland Yard
55 people were arrested for possession and distribution of child pornography in Brazil and 100 further arrest warrants were issued following a year-long operation. The operation, in which police cyber operatives managed to crack into the “Darknet” – a vast private network isolated from the “regular” Internet, often associated with illegal activities or dissent, followed on methods developed by the United States’ FBI and United Kingdom’s Scotland Yard.
The operation found child pornography produced in Brazil being shared in five other countries and six children were rescued from “abusive situations” across the country.
Earlier this week twelve adults and five children suspected of child sex crimes and human trafficking have been arrested in Colombia.
The suspects are accused of pimping, sex tourism, human trafficking and drug crimes, the Colombian prosecutor’s office said in a statement….

Five NOPD detectives mishandled rape, child abuse investigations, inspector general finds
By  Naomi Martin,  The Times-Picayune    November 12, 2014  Five NOPD detectives have been transferred to street patrol and are under internal investigation after the city’s inspector general found they systematically failed to investigate and document allegations of sexual assault and child abuse.
The detectives wrote no investigative reports for 86 percent of the 1,290 sexual-assault or child-abuse calls they were collectively assigned to investigate from 2011 through 2013, according to the report released Wednesday. Two of their supervisors also were transferred and remain under investigation.
“These allegations suggest an indifference toward our citizens that will not be tolerated,” Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux said. He said that the detectives may have violated the law by committing malfeasance in office or injuring public records.

….In 65 percent of the cases reviewed, detectives submitted no initial incident reports — a basic summary of allegations — because the detectives classified those calls as “miscellaneous” incidents that did not merit any documentation at all.   “For 65 percent of their work for three years, no one can evaluate that,” said the inspector general’s lead investigator Howard Schwartz. “There is no record. Other than making it a 21 (miscellaneous).”
In 60 percent of the 450 cases reviewed, there was no supplemental report, a key record used by the department and prosecutors documenting investigative findings. Only 105 complaints became cases that were presented to the district attorney’s office. Of those, 74 cases were prosecuted, but only after the district attorney’s office conducted its own investigations, seeking medical records and interviewing witnesses and victims.
“The district attorney’s office should be commended for this,” Schwartz said.
The five detectives — Akron Davis, Merrill Merricks, Derrick Williams, Damita Williams and Vernon Haynes — represented the majority of the Special Victims Section, which had between eight and nine detectives throughout the three-year period.

….The inspector general’s office notified the NOPD on Oct. 3 that 13 children could be in danger in their homes after finding reports of physical and sexual abuse that apparently failed to get proper investigation. The department said it has made sure all are now safe by removing them from their homes or contacting child protective services, or both.
As of Oct. 3, NOPD had 53 outstanding DNA matches — notified in letters from the State Police crime lab since July 2010 — that they had not followed up on to start the process of finding potential rapists, the report says.
….The report alleges a culture of indifference.
Damita Williams told at least three different people that she “did not believe simple rape should be a crime,” the report says. Simple rape, under state law, is sex without the victim’s consent when the victim is intoxicated or incapacitated, and the offender should have known.
She was assigned 11 simple rape cases over the course of three years; only one was presented to the district attorney’s office.
In one case, she wrote that no DNA evidence was recovered. But State Police lab records showed that DNA evidence had in fact been found in that case.
In a separate case in which a victim reported her attacker was sending her threatening texts, Williams never documented any attempt to obtain phone records or the text messages. She never sent the victim’s rape kit to the crime lab for testing and in a log book, wrote that she “would not submit the kit to the DNA lab because the sex was consensual.”
Derrick Williams, who was the lead investigator on the case involving former New Orleans Saints football player Darren Sharper, submitted no supplemental reports on two rape cases in which nurses collected evidence and documented the accusers’ injuries.
In one case, State Police’s DNA lab found a possible match more than two years ago, but Williams had not submitted a sample to confirm it. In the other, State Police notified Williams that an incorrect kit had been sent in, and he had not responded.

Williams created two supplemental reports on the same day in 2013 after the inspector general’s office requested them — he dated one in 2011 and the other in 2010, the report says.
Vernon Haynes never documented any investigation into three cases in which the State Police crime lab found DNA evidence, the report says. He also had two cases that were lacking files in the office.
In one case, a victim reported she was raped and her iPhone was stolen; Haynes never documented any effort to track her phone or obtain phone records.
Merrill Merricks wrote in a report that he sent a rape kit to the State Police crime lab but they found no results. But the inspector general’s office reviewed State Police lab records and found the kit was never submitted. The kit had never actually moved from NOPD’s evidence room.
Merricks created four supplemental reports on the same day in 2013 after the inspector general’s office requested them — he dated three in 2011 and the other in 2010, the report says.
Akron Davis was assigned 13 cases of potential sexual/physical abuse involving children in which the juvenile victims potentially were still in the same home where the alleged abuse occurred. Of those 13, 11 lacked a supplemental report. Cases in which infants were hospitalized for skull fractures, a toddler tested positive for a sexually transmitted disease and a young child complained of sexual abuse at the hands of a registered sex offender were among those identified by the New Orleans Inspector General’s office as failing to get proper investigations….

Former journalist says human trafficking an epidemic 21st century slavery hits close to home By Maddy Lauria  Nov 13, 2014  Rehoboth Beach — The Sussex County Republican Women’s Club received a harsh reality check when veteran journalist Christine Dolan described a human trafficking case that struck close to home.
“Listen up … you don’t have a clue,” Dolan said as she began to discuss her more than decade-long experiences with human trafficking. “Just like the Industrial Revolution, just like the Victorian era, just like the African slave trade, you are living in the digital age of slavery in the 21st century. It is not just on the street. It is over the internet.”
Dolan, who worked for ABC and CNN in the 1980s, was commissioned by the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children to study child exploitation in 2000….

Dolan said Easton, Md., shows human trafficking occurs close to home. While many attendees raised their hands to say they were familiar with the town, most audience members voiced surprise that a brothel, operated a few doors down from a Mexican restaurant on Dover Street, was busted just a few years ago, leading to sex trafficking convictions in fall 2013….
Now Dolan is on a mission to spread the word that human trafficking crimes are proliferating throughout the world, which she outlined in her “Tots to Trafficking to Terrorism” presentation during the club’s dinner meeting Oct. 22. She said globalization and increased internet access provide ways for everything from child pornography to trafficking for torture to make a mark on international markets.
“Terrorism is a transnational, transcriminal network. Trafficking is transcriminal, transnational network,” she said. Dolan said groups like al-Qaida and the group known as the Islamic State are trafficking organizations with a hand in sex and labor trafficking as well as torture rituals.

Dolan outlined the main branches of human trafficking to include sex and labor, sex tourism, child pornography, child soldiers, organ trafficking, skin trafficking and ritual abuse torture. Dolan cited an evidence comparison by Interpol that 89 percent of online incidents affect victims between the age of 6 and 12, while 10 percent include victims age 3 and younger. She said there have been great efforts made since 2000, but the demand for younger victims has increased, with a jump from 3 percent in 2005 to the recently reported 10 percent of young trafficking victims….

Philippine shelter for street kids hit with allegations of abuse Homeless children say they prefer sleeping rough to beatings at the ‘rescue’ center  Many homeless children choose to stay on the streets of Manila rather than in government shelters, where rights groups say detainees are subject to abuse and maltreatment  Joe Torres and Eloisa Lopez, Manila     Philippines     October 28, 2014
….According to the Philippines’ Department of Social Welfare and Development, there were at least 246,000 street children in the country in 2012, including more than 11,000 in Manila alone. Most of them are boys who were abandoned by their families, or who choose to stay in the streets even if they have relatives.
But despite the difficult life, it’s one that boys like Jason prefer to the government alternative: detention in controversial centers for homeless people that rights groups claim are rife with abuse and maltreatment.
For years now, authorities have been rounding up “families at risk,” many of them children, in attempts to cleanse urban centers, particularly the capital, of perceived eyesores.
In Manila, the children who are “rescued” during nightly patrols end up in the Reception and Action Center (RAC), a facility that is supposed to provide temporary shelter for the homeless.
“We will run to avoid the night patrol,” said Jason….
In March, the Asian Legal Resource Centre asked the UN Human Rights Council during its 25th session in Geneva to take immediate action to address allegations of torture and violence against children in the Philippines….

‘I was a schoolgirl by day and sex slave at night’: Victim of satanic sex cult speak out
Sep 21, 2014     By Cathy Owen
Annabelle Forest was initiated into a sex cult when she was just seven, and was even abused by her own mother   The victim of a satanic sex cult has told how she will never forgive her “evil” mother for putting her through 11 years of hell at the hands of the sick group.
Annabelle Forest was initiated into a notorious sex cult that operated from a quiet Welsh cul-de-sac by her own mum at the age of seven. Even worse, she was abused by her mother as a teenager under the orders of the cult’s leader Colin Batley – the man she can’t even bring herself to name.
Now a mum herself and living happily in another part of the UK, Annabelle has taken the brave step of recounting her horror in a bid to get others to speak out about suspected abuse.
She told WalesOnline : “Nothing can hurt me as much as my mum and that man.”

“My mother was an evil woman and I’ll never forgive her.” Annabelle has written a book that tells how she was just seven-years-old when first forced to watch her mother perform a sex act on Batley. At the age of 11 she raped by him in her own home and three years later she was made to take part in group sex with her mother. Batley was given an indeterminate sentence for public protection in 2011 with a recommendation he spend at least 11 years in jail….
Now Annabelle has revealed the true extent of the horror she suffered at the hands of the cul-de-sac cult in her memoir The Devil on The Doorstep: My Escape from a Satanic Sex Cult.
The cult’s twisted ideology, based on a bizarre text called the Book of the Law by Aleister Crowley, formed the backdrop to Annabelle’s childhood.
The children of the cult, based in a small cul-de-sac in Kidwelly, were cut off from other children, forced to take part in long church services and obey Batley’s every whim.
“We weren’t even allowed to look in his eyes,” says Annabelle.

“He ruled our little community with an iron will and we were made to do what he ordered for fear of angering the Gods.”
In Batley’s ‘Church’, children were led to believe they were proving themselves to the Gods by passing tests, which usually involved sex with either him or other cult members….
By the time of her escape she had slept with over 1,800 men – the proceeds of which had all gone towards ‘the Church’.
In 2011, her evidence helped convict Batley for life as well as three others, including her mother….
“It was astonishing to me that people who came into contact with these children thought they were behaving this way out of choice. When you have control over a child and you can intimidate them, they will do anything you say.
“It was the same for me. Too many people looked away, too many people ignored the signs. It astonishes me that we lived in that small cul-de-sac for so many years and not one person saw anything that gave them cause for concern,” she says….
“If there’s one thing I would like to achieve with my book, it would be for others to start really paying attention to the community they live in. You can’t just walk around living in a bubble. There are abused children everywhere – it just takes one person to see it and that life could be saved.” The Devil on The Doorstep: My Escape From a Satanic Sex Cult by Annabelle Forest, published by Simon & Schuster….

“True Detective” Was Inspired by This Extremely Disturbing Case [VIDEO]
October 2, 2014 By Ben Lester
While Robert W. Chambers’s novel The King in Yellow directly inspired Nic Pizzolatto’s first critically acclaimed season of True Detective, it was not the only source material used for the show. Ten years ago, a notorious case plagued the town of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, that involved Satanic rituals, child abuse, and animal sacrifices.
In an attempt to connect the dots between one of the most gruesome crimes ever committed and HBO’s buzzing anthology series, VICE traveled down to Louisiana and met with the real-life Rust and Marty in the first episode of The Real.

The episode synopsis reads as follows:
Ten years ago, the town of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, was traumatized when a local church’s secret Satan worship, ritualized child molestation, and animal sacrifices came to light. Rust Cohle may be a fictional character, and time may not really be a flat circle, but that sounds an awful lot like the events of the first season of HBO’s hit True Detective. In this episode of our brand-new series The Real, we went down to Ponchatoula to meet Stuart Murphy and Tom Tedder, two law enforcement officials who helped put these terrible, true events in Ponchatoula’s rearview mirror.
The Real and Disturbing Story That Inspired ‘True Detective’ (Documentary) Thu 2 Oct 2014

Real-Life Satanic Church Was the Nightmarish Inspiration for True Detective By Alisha Grausoon October 3rd, 2014  ….True Detective was dark, twisted, cerebral. The crime drama was unlike anything we’d seen on TV yet. It also happened to be true.
VICE has kicked off its new The Real series with investigating the insane story of the real-life Satanic church in Louisiana that inspired the screenplay for True Detective. While the show’s Rust Cohle and Marty Hart are fictional characters, they’re based on the two lead detectives who actually did work the horrific case, Captain Stuart Murphy with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and FBI Special Agent Tom Tedder. Don Hall, the lead prosecutor on the case, said the reports of Satanic rituals and devil worshipping were “the most disturbing things” he had ever read in his 30+ years of experience.

….In 2005, Pastor Louis Lamonica, Jr., pastor of the Hosannah Church, walked into the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office and confessed to crimes that rocked the small town of Ponchatoula, Louisiana to its core. He had done, the pastor said, terrible things. They all had, he and his parishioners. He confessed that he and other church members had regularly engaged in, among other things, child molestation and sexual abuse, bestiality, Satanic rituals including ritualistic killing of animals, and even the abuse of his own children.
….Lamonica also detailed for the shocked detectives some of the more supernatural aspects of these Satanic rituals. They were held, he said, in an upstairs room called the “Youth Room”, whose windows were blackened so no one passing by outside could see in – later, investigators on the case found that when they shined a blacklight on the seemingly-unmarked walls, they were actually covered in Scripture and passages from the Bible.
The Youth Room would be decorated and prepared for these Satanic rituals, which would start out like any church service. But instead of hymns, Satanic music would play as they lit the red candles and drew the pentagram on the floor. The rituals often involved sex – with each other or with children – and bodily fluids, such as blood and urine.
….Lamonica and youth pastor Austin “Trey” Bernard confessed members of the church would pass their children around for other members to commit sex acts upon – some of the children were barely able to walk when they were first introduced to the rituals. And, rather than be ashamed of what they were doing, members of the church would confess what they had done with their own children and the children of other members, finding a twisted sort of pleasure in cataloguing their increasingly depraved acts to one another.
….While the investigators could find no hard evidence of the confessed animal killings or bestiality, there was plenty in the Youth Room to support the confessions of both Lamonica and Bernard about the unthinkable acts of sexual depravity and abuse church members inflicted upon their children. Both men were sentenced to life in prison and are currently serving out their concurrent life sentences. Still, because no other children would come forward (the Lamonica boys, years later, retracted their allegations of abuse, as is a common occurrence among traumatized survivors of sexual abuse) and because other church members struck plea deals in exchange for information about other members, the detectives know they only uncovered part of the truth. The true extent of the horror may never be known….

EXCLUSIVE: Charities claim that the satanic abuse of children is rife   CHILDREN have been the victims of satanic abuse including rape, murder and even the production of so-called snuff films which depict killings, two leading charities claimed last night.  By: Paul Murray  Published: Sun, November 9, 2014   DJ Jimmy Saville raped a girl of 15 during a satanic ritual  One campaigner said he had heard of babies born but never registered, so they would not be missed when killed by secret paedophile networks.  The existence of such terrifying cults is said to have gone unchecked in Scotland for decades, with victims facing scepticism and outright disbelief. Many incidents took place years ago but experts are sure ritual abuse rings still operate. Police Scotland said yesterday they were taking the allegations “incredibly seriously” and would investigate any complaints.  The claims will put the Scottish government under intense pressure to announce a public inquiry into historic child sexual abuse, with Scotland now the only part of the UK without such a review.
The disturbing claims of snuff films and widespread ritual abuse made by two charities came to light during a lengthy investigation by the Sunday Express.
Horrific things are happening and nobody is getting caught      Joseph Lumbasi
Last year we revealed that shamed DJ Jimmy Savile raped a girl aged 15 in 1975 during a satanic abuse ritual, while cloaked paedophiles looked on.
Kate Short, of Kilmarnock-based charity Break The Silence, said: “We have had quite a lot of people who have been abused as part of a cult or a paedophile ring….

Child abusers filmed murder, claims charity
CHILDREN in Scotland have been the victims of evil ritual abuse including rape, murder and even the production of so-called ‘snuff films’, two leading charities claimed last night.
By: Paula Murray Published: Sun, November 9, 2014  The ‘cults’ practising the ritual abuse of children is said to have gone unchecked in Scotland  One veteran campaigner said he had even heard of babies being born and never registered, so the innocent youngsters would not be missed when they were eventually killed by secret paedophile networks.
The existence of such terrifying ‘cults’ practising the ritual abuse of children is said to have gone unchecked in Scotland for decades, with those victims who do come forward facing scepticism and outright disbelief.
Although many of the vile incidents are said to have taken place some years ago, experts are sure that an unknown number of ritual abuse rings are still in operation today.
Last night, Police Scotland said they were taking the allegations “incredibly seriously” and would investigate any complaints made to them.

The claims are certain to put the Scottish Government under intense pressure to finally announce a public inquiry into historic child sexual abuse – with Scotland now the only part of the UK without such a review.
Education Secretary Michael Russell is due to make a statement to the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday in response to growing calls from survivors, charities, lawyers, politicians and human rights groups.
The disturbing claims of ‘snuff films’ and widespread ritual abuse came to light during a lengthy investigation by this newspaper and were made independently of each other by two charities operating in different parts of Scotland.
Break the Silence is an award-winning charity based in Kilmarnock which has helped some 2,800 childhood abuse victims in North and East Ayrshire alone over the past decade, working with the two councils and NHS Ayrshire and Arran.
Founder Kate Short, who sits on the Holyrood committee on adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, said the level of depravity experienced by some of their clients – most of whom are now aged 30 to 55 – was “unbelievable”.

She said: “We hear of ritual abuse, it’s not common but we have had quite a lot of people that have been abused as part of a cult or a paedophile ring….
“Their victims are so brainwashed they don’t dare to speak against them which makes it near impossible to see any prosecutions let alone convictions.
“And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
“We are contacted almost on a weekly basis. This is something that’s been going on forever and I can’t see it ever stopping.
“I don’t think the authorities that could stop it really believe the extent of it or even that it does exist.”
Ms Short said survivors often suppressed their memories of such harrowing childhood events and therefore the specific details are vague, meaning they can be written off as suffering from of ‘False Memory Syndrome’ or mental illness….
However, the astonishing claims were supported by another reputable charity, Izzy’s Promise, based in Dundee.
Project co-ordinator Joseph Lumbasi said that while ritual abuse did occur in immigrant communities, the overwhelming majority of cases involved white Scottish perpetrators and victims.
He said: “Actually 80 per cent of those who contact us are born and brought up right here in Scotland.
“We’ve dealt with people who have been involved in gang rape ceremonies, animal slaughters and all sorts of things in secret places.
“People who talk to us are relating us their experiences from when they were maybe just eight, nine or ten – kids really.
“There are stories of girls being forced to conceive and then their babies are aborted for sacrifices. Children are born that are never registered. It is not impossible, they never come up. There is pornography, sick films. Horrific things are happening and nobody is getting caught….
In 2002, a young woman named Laurie Matthew wrote a book called Where Angels Fear which claimed to identify areas across Dundee, Angus and Perthshire where ritual abuse of children was said to have taken place….

UK charities warn about rife child abuse, pedophile rings  Two major charities in the UK have warned that children continue to fall victim to rape, murder and even the production of so-called snuff films.  Sun Nov 9, 2014
Campaigners have reported that babies are being born but never registered as pedophile rings kill them in secret.
The investigation was conducted by Charity Izzy’s Promise and Charity Break The Silence.
In Scotland, the two charities say, such terrifying cults have been left unchecked for years. They have found also that ritual abuse rings are still operating.
Scottish police now say they are taking the claims “incredibly seriously”.
Jon Bird from London-based National Association for People Abused in Childhood told press TV that “these crimes do definitely take place and it is not just in Scotland rather in many parts of the UK and other countries we’ve been hearing it about a decade.”
The charities which conducted the investigation have also warned that the abuse taking place is an “extreme, barbaric type of terror that can lead to serious personal disorder.” “Horrific things are happening and nobody is getting caught”, says Charity Izzy’s Promise Project Coordinator Joseph Lumbasi. …

Ritual abuse still going on, say charities  Victoria Weldon  Reporter Monday 10 November 2014
LEADING charities have claimed that children in Scotland have been subjected to ritual abuse, including rape, murder and even the production of so-called “snuff films”.
Campaigners say the sadistic abuse has been carried out by paedophile networks and “cults”, with many victims who come forward facing scepticism and disbelief.
Although many of the incidents are understood to have taken place many years ago, it is believed that a number of ritual abuse rings are still operating today.
The claims came as rep-orts suggested the Scottish Government was looking into setting up a public inquiry into historical child abuse, with talks said to be centred on the remit and timing of such an investigation.
Kate Short, founder of charity Break the Silence, said the depravity experienced by some of her clients – who are now aged 30 to 55 -was unbelievable.

She added: “In the worst cases they have been forced to watch the making of snuff movies. It’s the extreme, barbaric type of terror that can lead to -serious personal disorder.
“Sadly many of these victims lack the confidence to engage the authorities because they think no-one will believe them.”
The shock claims were backed by another abuse charity, Izzy’s Promise, whose project coordinator Joseph Lumbasi described having to deal with people who have been involved in gang rape ceremonies and animal slaughters.
He said: “Their recollections of what has taken place, when and where are muddled. But it is happening here, in Scotland, as we speak and must be exposed.”….

Children in Scotland have been filmed being murdered by paedophiles in so-called ‘snuff movies’

Occult expert searches Westchester animal killings for clues Thane Grauel  October 3, 2014
The occult is the mystical, the magical – what is normally out of view. For most it’s a shadow world known only through folklore, movies and novels.
But Westchester County has had several recent glimpses of this secret realm:
• Headless goats and birds found in Yorktown near the New Croton Reservoir.
• A bag with headless goats and chickens found in Long Island Sound in New Rochelle.
• A black bird wrapped in colored fabrics in Mount Vernon.
To make some kind of sense of the disturbing discoveries, the Westchester SPCA called in New York City’s Marcos Quinones. For almost three decades, Quinones has been helping law enforcement agencies worldwide sort through clues to determine what type of practitioners were at work – and what they might have been seeking.
“I eliminate what’s normal,” he said. “If I’m left with occult aspects, is that a ritual of some sort?”
He looks for clues like candles, symbols, money, colored fabrics, and pieces of paper bearing names.
“Ultimately, you have to dissect it,” he said of the scene. “The symbols within a ritual are a road map for the entity you worship, they tell what you want the entity to do for you – for someone or against someone, or a group of people.”….

Santeria is a mix of West African, Caribbean and Roman Catholic traditions, but is not considered a dark religion, though animal sacrifice is part of its rituals.
Quiones also comes across Satanism. He estimates there are 100,000 people worldwide involved in the practice.
Ernie Lungaro, director of humane law enforcement for the SPCA, has been investigating animal abuse cases in Westchester for four years but only recently called on Quinones for advice after a streak of such cases in quick succession. He said experts can save local investigators time.
Depending on the case, Quinones offers to conduct interviews, interrogation, crime scene evaluation, or expert court testimony. The worst cases he’s seen involving violence against children – considered the “ultimate sacrifice” – in the name of a religion.
Animal sacrifices happen in every state, Quinones says. He believes Westchester’s recent cases are probably not related to each other, and might involve all three of the black magic and underground religious practices mentioned….

In Cold War, U.S. Spy Agencies Used 1,000 Nazis By ERIC LICHTBLAU OCT. 26, 2014
WASHINGTON — In the decades after World War II, the C.I.A. and other United States agencies employed at least a thousand Nazis as Cold War spies and informants and, as recently as the 1990s, concealed the government’s ties to some still living in America, newly disclosed records and interviews show.
At the height of the Cold War in the 1950s, law enforcement and intelligence leaders like J. Edgar Hoover at the F.B.I. and Allen Dulles at the C.I.A. aggressively recruited onetime Nazis of all ranks as secret, anti-Soviet “assets,” declassified records show. They believed the ex-Nazis’ intelligence value against the Russians outweighed what one official called “moral lapses” in their service to the Third Reich.
The agency hired one former SS officer as a spy in the 1950s, for instance, even after concluding he was probably guilty of “minor war crimes.”

And in 1994, a lawyer with the C.I.A. pressured prosecutors to drop an investigation into an ex-spy outside Boston implicated in the Nazis’ massacre of tens of thousands of Jews in Lithuania, according to a government official….
In 1980, F.B.I. officials refused to tell even the Justice Department’s own Nazi hunters what they knew about 16 suspected Nazis living in the United States.
The bureau balked at a request from prosecutors for internal records on the Nazi suspects, memos show, because the 16 men had all worked as F.B.I. informants, providing leads on Communist “sympathizers.” Five of the men were still active informants….
Some spies for the United States had worked at the highest levels for the Nazis.

One SS officer, Otto von Bolschwing, was a mentor and top aide to Adolf Eichmann, architect of the “Final Solution,” and wrote policy papers on how to terrorize Jews.
Yet after the war, the C.I.A. not only hired him as a spy in Europe, but relocated him and his family to New York City in 1954, records show. The move was seen as a “a reward for his loyal postwar service and in view of the innocuousness of his [Nazi] party activities,” the agency wrote….
When Israeli agents captured Eichmann in Argentina in 1960, Otto von Bolschwing went to the C.I.A. for help because he worried they might come after him, memos show.
Agency officials were worried as well that Mr. von Bolschwing might be named as Eichmann’s “collaborator and fellow conspirator and that the resulting publicity may prove embarrassing to the U.S.” a C.I.A. official wrote….
In all, the American military, the C.I.A., the F.B.I. and other agencies used at least 1,000 ex-Nazis and collaborators as spies and informants after the war, according to Richard Breitman, a Holocaust scholar at American University who was on a government-appointed team that declassified war-crime records.
The full tally of Nazis-turned-spies is probably much higher, said Norman Goda, a University of Florida historian on the declassification team, but many records remain classified even today, making a complete count impossible.

“U.S. agencies directly or indirectly hired numerous ex-Nazi police officials and East European collaborators who were manifestly guilty of war crimes,” he said. “Information was readily available that these were compromised men.”….
When the Justice Department was preparing in 1994 to prosecute a senior Nazi collaborator in Boston named Aleksandras Lileikis, the C.I.A. tried to intervene.
The agency’s own files linked Mr. Lileikis to the machine-gun massacres of 60,000 Jews in Lithuania. He worked “under the control of the Gestapo during the war,” his C.I.A. file noted, and “was possibly connected with the shooting of Jews in Vilna.”
Even so, the agency hired him in 1952 as a spy in East Germany — paying him $1,700 a year, plus two cartons of cigarettes a month — and cleared the way for him to immigrate to America four years later, records show….

The Enslaved Queen: A Memoir about Electricity and Mind Control Author: Wendy Hoffman
Written by a survivor of mind control and ritual abuse who is also a therapist, this memoir exposes the existence and practices of organized criminal groups who abuse children, helps survivors of those abuses, and provides important information for professionals about the dissociative brain. The author’s poetic prose contrasts with the horror of the subject matter.
The adult journeys back to give voice to infant and child parts of her, describing her handlers’ early interventions to destroy bonding and create dissociation, the foundation of reverse-Kabbalah suicide and pathway programming, and the installation of mind control. Scenes from ordinary life are interspersed throughout the memoir. Nazi post-war recruitment of American subjects during the 1940s and 50s (including the infamous Dr. Mengele), children used for prostitution, pornography and the drug trade along with the workings of the Illuminati leadership and their international Feast of the Beast rituals are all included.
The memoir also covers attempts at recovery, experiences with cult therapists in disguise and finally the author’s work with an honest, competent therapist, which led to healing and her brain melding together. The ending acknowledges spiritual experiences, the power of love, the memory process, and thoughts on living and surviving a life such as hers. Publisher: Karnac Books 2014  ISBN 10 : 1782201483

Praise be! 85-year-old defies death threats from Satanists to spend 22 years returning 1,000-year-old derelict church to its former glory
Bob Davey began work on the Norfolk tower when he retired 22 years ago
1000-year-old church last used in 1930s before it was hit by a German bomb
When he first entered he was horrified to find satanic     and pagan altar
The Christian guarded church from cult members who once drove car at him
During restoration he discovered dazzling religious murals hidden by plaster
By Mario Ledwith for Daily Mail 20 October 2014
It has been struck by a German bomb, torn apart by American GIs and left in squalor by a pagan cult. So when the ruins of an ancient church were discovered in thick woodland by Bob Davey, he could have been forgiven for thinking its fate had already been sealed.
Instead, the determined church warden used his retirement to embark on a 22-year crusade to return the dilapidated building to its former glory – despite receiving a death threat from the cult….
He initially had to guard the property at night to deter the cult members, who once drove a car at him and sent him a death threat. He even enlisted the Territorial Army to guard it for a time after the pagans smeared the walls with blood.
In spite of some local opposition, he built a road to the church under an old law stating that any consecrated site should have an access route…..

Lost church is rescued from the Satanists by saviour Bob Davey TWO decades ago, this 1,000-year-old building was a roofless, overgrown ruin whose existence was almost forgotten.  By: John Geoghegan  Published: Mon, October 20, 2014  Now, it’s a flourishing church thanks to one remarkable man. Bob Davey, 85, has forked out thousands of pounds of his own cash and even fought off Satanic worshippers in his bid to restore the ninth century Anglo-Saxon church in Swaffham, Norfolk.
In doing so, he uncovered rare and valuable historical wall paintings that he says have international status. Bob is now a warden at St Mary’s Church, which welcomes visitors from across the world and has even received Prince Charles and Princess Margaret.
The building was discovered by Bob’s late wife Gloria one morning in June 1992 while she was on a ramble with friends. Hidden in woodland at the top of a small hill, stood a tower shrouded in dark ivy. Gloria managed to force her way in, through piles of rubbish, and found a disturbing scene.

Soon realising it was an old church, Gloria found it laid out as a Satanic      with a pagan alter and anti-Christian symbols. “This annoyed me intensely,” Bob recalled. “I’ve been a Christian all my life and wasn’t putting up with this on my patch.
“That very afternoon, I cleared all their rubbish out and burnt what I could.”….
But he was forced to guard the building at night from black-clad Satan-worshippers who were still trying to use it. Bob claims the devil-worshippers tried to run him down with a car and on another occasion came to his house and threatened him with his life if he carried on his work.
Help came from the Territorial Army who sent soldiers to stand guard with Bob….

The Devil on the Doorstep
My Escape From a Satanic Sex Cult  By Annabelle Forest  with: Katy Weitz
Annabelle Forest was just seven years old when she was inducted into a twisted sex cult by her own mother. For the next few years she was brainwashed by the cult’s leader, Colin Batley, who ran a harem of followers from his unassuming cul-de-sac in Kidwelly, Wales.
Batley ruled the cult with an iron will, his twisted ideology based on Aleister Crowley’s Book of the Law, which informed their day-to-day lives. From the age of 11, Annabelle was repeatedly raped by Batley, and threatened with going to hell if she angered ‘the gods’ by refusing Batley’s sick demands. Annabelle’s mother joined in the sessions and even filmed them.
Annabelle lived a double life – a schoolgirl by day, a sex slave at night. It might have endured for years had she not fallen pregnant at 17 with Batley’s baby. In February 2008 she gave birth to a daughter, Emily, who gave Annabelle hope and a reason to live. Now she knew she had to escape, especially after Batley forced her into prostitution when Emily was three months old.
She contacted relatives and found the courage to report Batley, her mother and the other cult members to the police. In 2011 her evidence helped convict 48-year-old Batley for life on 11 charges of rape and numerous other sexual offences. Annabelle’s mother was also jailed, along with two others in a case that came to be known as the ‘cul-de-sac cult’.

Pittsfield Man With Implanted Horns Convicted Of Murder  September 26, 2014  SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A man who has bumps resembling horns implanted in his forehead was found guilty of murder and other charges Friday for his role in the kidnapping and slaying of three Massachusetts men in 2011.
“I’ll see you all in hell,” Caius Veiovis, 34, of Pittsfield, yelled at the jury that convicted him after deliberating over six days. Veiovis also was convicted Friday of kidnapping and intimidation of a witness.
The dismembered bodies of David Glasser, 44; Edward Frampton, 58; and Robert Chadwell, 47, of Pittsfield were found buried in nearby Becket 10 days after they disappeared in August 2011. The killings shocked Pittsfield, a town of about 41,000 in northwestern Massachusetts. The trials were moved to Springfield.
Two co-defendants in the case were convicted of the same charges earlier this year. They are serving life without parole, the mandatory term Veiovis faces at his sentencing Monday.
Prosecutors said Veiovis helped Adam Lee Hall, 37, of Peru, and David Chalue, 47, of North Adams, kidnap and shoot the victims weeks before Glasser was to testify against Hall, a Hells Angels member, in an assault case. The others were killed to eliminate witnesses, prosecutors said. Defense attorneys argued there was shaky evidence….

Jury selection begins for trial of Caius Veiovis, last of triple-murder defendants
By Andrew Amelinckx, Berkshire Eagle Staff 09/03/2014
….Jury selection is set to begin Wednesday in Hampden Superior Court in the trial of 34-year-old Caius Veiovis, whose mug shot went viral after his arrest in September 2011 due to his horn implants and facial tattoos.
He is accused of participating in the kidnapping, torture, killing and dismemberment of three men along with 37-year-old Adam Lee “Leo” Hall — who was then a ranking member of the local Hells Angels motorcycle club — and David Chalue, a 47-year-old member of the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang.
Hall and Chalue are both serving multiple life sentences in prison after being found guilty of the crimes. Veiovis has pleaded not guilty to three counts each of witness intimidation, kidnapping and murder.
….According to the testimony at Hall and Chalue’s trials, Hall and the other two men forced the three victims out of the residence at gunpoint before taking them to the woods. There, as the rain poured down, the victims begged for their lives while they were “tortured beyond torture” and then shot and stabbed to death.
Where the victims were actually killed remains a mystery, but investigators continue to believe Pittsfield State Forest somehow played a role. The murder weapons were never recovered.

The victims’ remains were later found in plastic bags buried in a ditch on rural private property in Becket.
….Veiovis, until 2008 when he legally changed his name while serving time in a Maine prison, was known as Roy C. Gutfinski Jr.
In 1999, he was arrested by police in Augusta, Maine, after he and his teenage girlfriend allegedly slashed a 16-year-old’s back with a razor and drank the girl’s blood while they kissed one another, according to a Boston Globe report. Later, the two girls would claim he wasn’t a participant in that ritual, but a judge found him to be a “principal actor” in it.
He was found guilty of elevated aggravated assault, aggravated assault and reckless conduct and served more than seven years in prison.
At the time Veiovis allegedly told police he was a Satanist and vampire who drank human blood.
He was also the lead singer for a Black Metal band “Deadhole” and went by the name “Trash.”
In 2006, Veiovis was charged with kidnapping for allegedly holding two employees of the Foxy Lady, a New Bedford strip club, against their will. The women called police from a motel bathroom after Veiovis and another man shed their clothing, started snorting cocaine and refused to let the women leave, according to a Kennebec Journal article from 2007.
The kidnapping charges were later dismissed, but Veiovis was convicted of marijuana possession, triggering probation violation charges in Maine and leading to another 31 2 year prison stint on the violation….

A judge ordered Caius Veiovis serve consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole on the murder convictions, as well as concurrent eight to 10 year sentences on other charges. He was the third and final person convicted for the slayings….

Man with horn implants convicted of Massachusetts triple murder has criminal record in Maine By Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN Staff Sept. 29, 2014   SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts — A Massachusetts man with facial tattoos, forehead implants that resemble horns and other body modifications told jurors he would see them “all in hell” after he was convicted last week of murdering three men in 2011.
Caius Veiovis, 34, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was found guilty on Friday of three counts each of murder, intimidation of a witness and kidnapping, Berkshire District Attorney David Capeless said in a statement. Veiovis had previously been convicted under another name in Maine for assaulting an Augusta woman.
Veiovis was the last of three co-defendants convicted in the triple homicide….
Authorities say Veiovis, Hall and Chalue kidnapped and killed three Pittsfield men: David Glasser, 44; Edward Frampton, 58, and Robert Chadwell, 47. The three were last seen on Aug. 28, 2011, at an apartment shared by Glasser and Frampton.
The shot and dismembered bodies of the three men were uncovered by local and federal detectives 10 days later in Becket, Massachusetts….
Veiovis has a criminal history in Maine that includes felony convictions from 2000 for his role in a blood-letting ritual that included slicing the back of a 16-year-old girl and then licking the blood with another girl.
He was age 19, living in Augusta and known as Roy Gutfinski Jr. at the time. He was dating Deanne Jones, a 16-year-old who agreed to be treated as an adult when she pleaded guilty in November 1999 to elevated aggravated assault in the blood-drinking ritual.
Jones, who used a razor to cut the 7-inch gash across the other girl’s back on Aug. 21, 1999, was sentenced to a year in jail and six years of probation. Gutfinski was charged with elevated aggravated assault, aggravated assault and reckless conduct for the girl’s attack, which required 32 stitches. At Gutfinski’s waived-jury trial in 2000, prosecutor Alan Kelley portrayed Gutfinski as “a Satanic worshipper” who told police “he was a vampire and drank blood, his own as well as other persons.” Gutfinski and Jones met the cutting victim in downtown Augusta two days before the incident occurred. Neither girl wanted Gutfinski prosecuted, Kelley said.
He was convicted in March 2000 and later sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but three years suspended, as well as four years of probation. Gutfinski, who ended up serving more than seven years behind bars after various probation violations, changed his legal name to Caius Domitius Veiovis in July 2008 while at Maine State Prison. He unsuccessfully applied in 2003 to have his name changed to “Diszade Trash Horror.” Veiovis was released from Maine’s probation system in July 2010. In the years since, Veiovis has had hornlike objects implanted in his forehead, added facial tattoos, including the number “666,” sharpened his teeth and had his tongue split, according to the Berkshire Eagle….

Young witnesses discuss abuse  Thursday, October 2, 2014 By Greg Jordan FOR THE REGISTER-HERALD
PRINCETON — A teen girl and her younger sister testified Wednesday in Mercer County Circuit Court about a Bluefield man who allegedly used a claim of having magical powers to sexually abuse them.
James Rolan Irvin, 57, of Bluefield, faces 18 charges, including sexual abuse first-degree, sexual assault first-degree and sexual abuse by a parent or guardian. During an interview in April with Detective K.L. Adams of the Bluefield Police Department, the teen stated her mother was practicing wiccan and pagan practices with Irvin and “believed him to be a magical warlock,” according to the arrest report.
The 17-year-old teen testified Wednesday she was approximately 10-years-old when Irvin began to sexually abuse her, recalling that the year was 2006 or 2007. Irvin, who was living in Bluefield with the girls and their mother, said the acts were happening in order to help her mother, the teen stated when being questioned by Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney George Sitler….
The attorneys representing Irvin, William Huffman and Natalie Hager, have countered that the case was the result of a custody battle between the girls’ parents, and that the father has tried to portray Irvin as a wiccan and pagan. Hager said in her opening statement Tuesday that Irvin does not practice those belief systems….
Later the second sister, now 11 years old, took the stand; she was approximately 3 years old when the alleged abuse occurred….
“I don’t like him. The stuff that he said and the stuff that he did. He tried to use witchcraft on me,” she replied. In later testimony, she recalled Irvin touching her breasts and private areas.

‘Warlock’ found guilty of sexual abuse Monday, October 6, 2014  CNHI News Service
A West Virginia man who prosecutors say conducted ritualistic sex acts with young girls who believed him to be a “warlock” has been convicted on multiple counts of sexual abuse involving juveniles. Jurors found James Rolan Irvin, 57, of Bluefield, guilty Monday of 30 counts of sexual assault and sexual abuse involving juveniles. Irvin faces a minimum sentence of 220 years in prison, according to Mercer County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney George Sitler.
The verdict came after three days of deliberations by the jury in the case, which gained notoriety as claims of Nolan’s use of magical powers surfaced during testimony.
Police say Irvin used those claims to get close to children and sexually abuse them. According to an arrest report in the case, a teenage girl told a Bluefield Police Department detective her mother was engaged in wiccan and pagan practices with Nolan and “believed him to be a magical warlock.”….
If Nolan’s sentences run consecutively — as the state will request at the Dec. 1 sentencing hearing — Irvin would not be eligible for parole consideration until after serving 225 years, Sitler said. Nolan was found not guilty of two counts of first-degree sexual assault involving a third juvenile in the case.

Ritual Chicken Slaughter Draws Fire in Brooklyn  By NICK DIVITO  Thursday, October 02, 2014
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (CN) – A Yom Kippur atonement ceremony involving the sacrifice of live chickens has drawn a lawsuit from animal rights activists. Crown Heights resident Rina Deych filed the action Tuesday in Kings County Court as a member of the Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos.
The 33-page complaint defines as “an event that involves the torture and slaughter of chickens on public streets and sidewalks.” “It is veiled under the guise of a ‘religious activity’ of the Jewish faith, but this definition is questional at best,” the complaint continues. “In fact, many observers of the Jewish faith have denounced this practice as barbaric and primitive, and label it as nothing more than a pure act of animal torture and abuse.”      The practice a person waving a live chicken – or sometimes a sack of coins – over his head leading up to Yom Kippur, a day of atonement and the most holy day for the Jewish faithful…. The practice is a “public nuisance, poses a health hazard, and involves dangerous and illegal activity,” according to the complaint.      Kaporos events cause “litter, blood, garbage, dirt, feces, urine, feathers and other unsafe, unsanitary and hazardous debris to be strewn on public areas,” the complaint states.      “Moreover, illegal makeshift slaughterhouses are erected and utilized on open public property under temporary tents,” it continues….

Girls leading the way 21/10/2014 By Colani Hlatshwayo
….About Gender Based Violence
Gender based Violence remains one of the biggest barriers of gender equality in Swaziland ranking as the major human rights violation amongst women. There are escalating incidences of gender based violence in the country in general as per the Surveillance on Violence report of 2011 which revealed that 77% of females were victims of abuse and perpetrators were males, were known to the survivors (CSO, 2011). Serial rapists’ occurrences which abduct and later kill women and girls are also seen from time to time.
The practice of muti-killing/ ritual murders is also from time to time surfacing especially soon before the year of national elections. During this period, women and children disappear and are later own found dead or never recovered.
Testimonials of young women alleging that they were married under Swazi Customary Law without being told about the intended marriage and without their consent being elicited first are common. The marriageable age for girls under Swazi Law and Custom is not defined and it is believed that puberty is used to determine that a girl can be a wife.
The prevalence of this violation of rights is stemmed from a turbulent socio-economic status of women and girls in Swaziland. In the past decade of Swaziland’s political and socio-economic history a lot of disparities have made women and girls much more vulnerable to gender based violence resulting in its upsurge. Socio-economic indicators such as education (formal and informal), role or status in society and levels of income have been the key drivers of Gender Based Violence in the home space as such peace is not being ensured in the home never mind the public space…..

Chinese court sentences cult members to death  5 cult members killed woman in Zhaoyuan McDonald’s  By Tim Hume CNN Oct 13, 2014    (CNN) – Two members of a banned Chinese doomsday cult were sentenced to death Saturday for the brutal murder of a woman in a McDonald’s restaurant in May, Chinese state media reported.
Zhang Fan and Zhang Lidong were among five members of the Church of Almighty God, or “Quannengshen,” tried on murder charges in August over the killing in Zhaoyuan, Shandong Province, the state-run Xinhua agency reported.
Three fellow cult members, Lyu Yingchun, Zhang Hang and Zhang Qiaolian, were sentenced to life, 10 and seven years in prison respectively for their roles in the attack. The four Zhangs were related, according to the report.
A court statement said the victim, a 37-year-old woman named Wu Shuoyan, was attacked after refusing to give her phone number to the group, who were allegedly attempting to recruit new members.
Zhang Fan and Lyu called her an “evil spirit,”….
Linked to kidnappings, violence and extortion, the Church of Almighty God has been on a list of 14 banned religious groups issued by China’s Ministry of Public Security since 1995.
Founded in the 1990s in Henan Province, the group believes that Jesus has been reincarnated as Yang Xiangbin, the wife of the group’s founder, Zhao Weishan. The couple fled to the United States in 2000, Xinhua reported.
The group, also known as Eastern Lightning (“Dongfang Shandian”), preaches that the righteous are engaged in an apocalyptic struggle against China’s Communist Party — which it refers to as the “great red dragon.”
Belonging to a tradition of heterodox, quasi-Christian Chinese religious movements, the cult was estimated as having between several hundred thousand and one million members, according to Emily Dunn, an Asian studies academic at the University of Melbourne who wrote her doctoral thesis on the group….
In a statement provided to CNN in June, Hong Kong-based members of the group responsible for its English-language website said it was “very natural” for the Chinese Communist Party to blame the group for the McDonald’s death because the party slandered and then suppressed those that disagreed with it….

Teal Swan’s story of Satanic Ritual abuse PART ONE By Christopher Oswalt. CREATED Oct 30, 2014 The topic of Satanic Ritual has long been taboo. Few speak of the underground world. Criminal cases are rare. One former Idaho woman says she was a victim of Satanic Ritual abuse while growing up in Eastern Idaho. Teal Swan says her life consisted of abuse, both physically and sexual and murder….
Swan says she witnessed the person who took her into the cult kill five children. She knew what she was witnessing was not right, but she feared escaping.
“One of the first programs that was done on me, was he had me breathing and go through and elaborate visualization of my home having just told. ‘Hey you just told people about me. You just told who you really are. So what do you see hanging from the rafters? I shrug my shoulders. He said ‘Do you see that is your mother? Do you see that her blood is all over the floor?”

What Teal shared with Oswalt is the focus of dozens of investigations around the country. Lt. Larry Jones, a former Boise Police officer, was instrumental in a Department of Justice report on cult rituals. The report admits these crimes are hard to prove, but says it is imperative the cases be solved. In most documented cases of ritual abuse, the FBI says it is often a close friend or family who commits the crime.
Teal told Oswalt that she truly believes what she shared happened to her….
Teal says she was taken in at age six. She escaped during a ritual in Eastern Idaho when she was 19. She left the state and found refuge with her friend in Utah. Teal says things started to turn around from there, but it took time….

Visitor at home shared by couple heard stories of murder, animal sacrifice Warrants sealed in Clemmons homicides; Crews clear debris Thursday, October 16, 2014 Wesley Young/Winston-Salem Journal
More details continue to emerge about the lives of Pazuzu Algarad and Amber Burch, the two people arrested on Oct. 5 and charged in the murder and burial of two men at their Clemmons home.
According to a friend of Burch, Algarad’s girlfriend, he claimed to get a high from eating the “still-beating heart” of a sacrificial animal and bragged openly about having killed two prostitutes.
That friend visited the house in 2009 where the couple lived on Knob Hill Drive in Clemmons. Algarad and Burch are each charged with murder in connection with the deaths of two men whose remains were found recently in the couple’s backyard….
Walking into the house, trying not to step in excrement, Burch’s friend saw Satanic sayings written on the walls and filthy dishes piled up with “bugs crawling all over them.”
Algarad bragged about killing two prostitutes, the friend said, adding that neither she nor Burch really believed he had done it.
“The facial tattoos, the Satanism, I never gave it much thought,” the friend said. “I figured he was just trying to psych everybody out.”

The friend said she never saw anyone from the Winston-Salem area at the couple’s house when she was there, and doesn’t know anything about Joshua Wetzler and Tommy Dean Welch, who have been identified as the two men buried in the backyard. She said she and her friends have been wondering about the victims — who they were, and how they might have ended up at the house.
Authorities have not said how the two men were killed or what connection they had to Algarad and Burch. Arrest warrants say Algarad, who is 35, killed Wetzler in July 2009 and that Burch, who is 24, helped him bury the body. In October 2009, arrest warrants say, Burch killed Welch and Algarad helped with the burial….
Algarad talked a lot about ritual sacrifices, Burch’s friend said, but never mentioned human sacrifice.
“He made it a point to mention all the time that once a month he has to sacrifice … a small rabbit or small animal,” the friend said. “He would describe the animal and bathing in or drinking the blood. He would get a drug-like high from eating the still-beating heart. I thought he was feeding me a load of crap. I thought it was a big show, one of those shock factors. He would say something along the lines of, ‘We sacrificed it and had sex in its blood.’ I slept there on a number of occasions and I never worried about him slicing my throat or anything.”
Burch’s friends had nicknamed her Bubbles because of her bright personality, the friend said, but the woman she saw in Winston-Salem was not the Amber she had known.
“She was the type of girl that it didn’t matter what was going on that was bad, it was her personal goal to put a smile on her friends’ faces,” the friend said.
Burch’s friend said she thinks Algarad “brainwashed” Burch….
The change in Burch is what “blows my mind,” the friend said.
“She couldn’t handle someone spanking a dog for peeing on the floor,” she said. “She was into peace, love and happiness. She was a hippie. She wasn’t a devil-worshipping Satanist killing machine that everyone is saying she is.”

Three Suspects Arrested After Skeletal Remains Found in North Carolina Backyard  By Alex Heigl 10/10/2014   For the neighbors of 2749 Knob Hill Drive in Clemmons, North Carolina, the Devil lived next door.  Or at least one very devoted and misled fan. Pazuzu Illah Algarad, 35, was arrested Sunday following the discovery of skeletal remains in shallow graves in his backyard. He has been charged with murder and accessory after the fact, as has Amber Nicole Burch, 24, (described as Algarad’s wife on Facebook) and 28-year-old Krystal Nicole Matlock, who has only been charged as an accessory.
Born John Alexander Lawson in San Francisco, California, Algarad dropped out of high school and changed his name to reflect a new identity he was carving for himself. He adopted the name of Pazuzu – the demon at the center of The Exorcist – and cultivated a personality that was “a combination of Charles Manson, Anton LeVay and Alistair Crowley,” according to Camel City Dispatch. He began claiming Iraqi descent (friending real Middle Eastern jihadists on Facebook), and reportedly filed his teeth into points with a Dremel tool.
For people around Clemmons, Algarad was the local boogeyman. The house on Knob Hill (belonging to Algarad’s mother, who lived with him and Burch and is legally blind) featured a front door ominously painted black and festooned with upside-down crosses, Arabic script (that apparently read “The House of Devils”) and a long diatribe against police. A message board post from 2013 described it as “disgusting,” with refuse – human and animal – littering the floor and an overpowering odor.

One source told Camel City Dispatch that Algarad’s home was filled with “Hot Topic Satan stuff” and that “There was something about him that just made me feel terrible … Just his presence made me feel uneasy.” Another source described Lawson’s Satanic activities: Mutual blood-letting in local cemeteries, attempted arson of several churches and animal sacrifices, the latter of which were confirmed by law enforcement.
Algarad’s crimes ventured into the more prosaic, as well: In 2010, he was accused of choking his mother, who told police she was afraid of him and didn’t want to press charges, according to The Winston-Salem Journal. Also in 2010, Algarad was charged in connection with the shooting death of 30-year-old Joseph Emmrick Chandler, whose body was found at a local park near the Yadkin River, dead of a gunshot wound. He was convicted in 2012 as an accessory after the fact, according to multiple reports, and was on probation from that conviction when the bodies were found Sunday….

Police continue investigation of house where skeletal remains found House was searched in 2010 but warrant is sealed Monday, October 6, 2014  Michael Hewlett/Winston-Salem Journal
CLEMMONS – On the front door of a house where the skeletal remains of two people were found Sunday was a sign warning law-enforcement not to enter.
“No gang members allowed: anyone that dresses the same, has the same badge and call themselves the authority of the land they did not create…,” the sign said. Below and to the right is a picture of a skull and cross bones. Under that picture are the words, “Evil will triumph.”
But on Monday, deputies with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office as well as agents with the State Bureau of Investigation were still at 2749 Knob Hill Drive, where the skeletal remains of two unidentified people were found in shallow graves in the backyard on Sunday. Few details have emerged about what led authorities to the house on Sunday and what they have found, beyond the skeletal remains….

Pazuzu Algarad was born in San Francisco as John Alexander Lawson. Lawson changed his name to Pazuzu Algarad in 2002 for religious reasons. Pazuzu is the name of an Assyrian demon whose name was used in the movie, “The Exorcist.”….
However, in 2010, Algarad was charged with accessory after the fact of involuntary manslaughter in connection to the shooting death of Joseph Emmrick Chandler. Chandler had been reported missing and his body was found June 7, 2010 at Donnaha Park near the Yadkin River. He had died from a gunshot wound. Nicholas Pasquale Rizzi of Lewisville was charged with involuntary manslaughter….

Pazuzu Algarad Arrested; Skeletal Remains Found In Yard Of ‘Evil Gods’ Worshiper The Huffington Post By Sebastian Murdock 10/06/2014   Two North Carolina residents have been arrested after police allegedly found the skeletal remains of two people buried in a shallow grave in the couple’s back yard.
Pazuzu Illah Algarad, 35, and Amber Nicole Burch, 24, were both arrested Sunday after police executed a search warrant and found the remains, according to WXII….
Heath said Algarad told her he picked up two prostitutes at two separate locations before he killed and ate them, burning the remains in a fire pit before burying the rest.
“I never once saw the skeleton bodies, I honestly thought he was lying, now I’m not sure what to believe,” Heath said.
In an online message board discussing Algarad’s past conviction, an anonymous poster said the suspect had spoken of burying dead bodies. The post is dated 2012:
“He has bragged to other members of my family about sick things he has done and told them he has killed other people and has buried other bodies.”….
On his Facebook page, Pazuzu has a large collection of pictures featuring demonic creatures and upside down crosses. Heath described Pazuzu as a worshipper of “evil gods.”

Saalfelden murder ‘was Nazi ritual killing’ 21 Oct 2014  The murder of a young woman in Saalfelden, Pinzgau, on October 9th was not a case of domestic violence but a ritual killing – according to a report from broadcaster ORF Salzburg. The body of a 20-year-old woman was found in a pool of blood in a man’s bathroom and police initially believed that she had been murdered by her boyfriend. A suspect, also 20, was arrested at the scene. However the report from ORF Salzburg quotes unnamed sources who said the man raped and stabbed the woman, who was an acquaintance of his, and cut Nazi symbols into her skin with a knife….

Ancient ritual of female child abuse must end, activists say By Katy Migiro, Thomson Reuters Foundation 10/13/2014   Africa can end female genital mutilation (FGM) in 20 years, activists said on Friday as they launched a continent-wide campaign, calling the ancient ritual a form of child abuse aimed at controlling women’s sexuality.
NAIROBI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – FGM, a practice involving the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, can cause hemorrhage, shock, complications in childbirth, fistula and death….
“Unless the violence stops, we will not rest.”
Some 30 million African girls are at risk of FGM over the next decade. This includes tens of thousands of girls from diaspora communities in Europe and North America who are often taken abroad to be cut….
In Kenya, 27 percent of women undergo FGM, although it reaches 98 percent in some communities, such as the Somali.

‘A Culture of Silence’ speaks for Sierra Leone By Peter Keough  Globe Correspondent   November 13, 2014 For most people, the sufferings of African countries such as Sierra Leone, which has endured a hellish civil war only to be confronted with the Ebola epidemic, are regarded as passing news items.
For the documentary filmmaker Raouf J. Jacob, however, Sierra Leone is his beloved homeland. Forced to emigrate to America with his family in 1999 in the midst of the internecine conflict, he returns in “A Culture of Silence” to the place of his birth to see how it has rebounded from its bloody past. He and his partner and fellow filmmaker Lara M. Moreno tour the country with their camera to see how it has confronted its intransigent problems. These include poverty, the exploitation of resources by foreign corporations, cultural misogyny epitomized by the practice of female genital mutilation, and the legacy of war embodied by its most tragic victims — child soldiers kidnapped by warlords and forced to kill….

Sexual abuse allegations shut down football season at New Jersey school October 10, 2014, by CNN Wire     SAYREVILLE, N.J. — The crunching sound of football cleats on hallway floors became the drone of dread for freshman at a New Jersey high school. As they marched into the locker room, an ugly hazing ritual allegedly awaited them.
Upperclassmen howled as they flipped off the lights then sexually abused their younger classmates at Sayreville High School, parents and players say.
Authorities are investigating, and the school’s superintendent has canceled the successful team’s football season.
The coach and officials won’t comment on details of the abuse, but it may have gone on for a year. A Sports Illustrated article indicated that it likely did not involve intercourse.
“There were incidents of harassment, intimidation that took place on a pervasive level, in which the players knew, tolerated and in general accepted,” says Superintendent Richard Labbe….

Seven Sayreville football players suspended amid abuse scandal at New Jersey school
The announcement came an hour before a vigil was to be held in town for the victims of the alleged hazing ritual. BY Bill Price NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Sunday, October 12, 2014
The seven Sayreville football players arrested over the weekend have been suspended from school, Jonathan Busch, the lawyer for the school board said in a statement, according to The Home News Tribune.
“While we are legally restricted from speaking about individual students, it would be fair to say that any student arrested in connection with the matter involving the football program is suspended from Sayreville War Memorial High School, and we are in the process of arranging for an alternative education pending further investigation,” Busch said in the statement.
The announcement came an hour before a vigil was to be held in town for the victims of the alleged hazing ritual….

A joint statement from county prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Sayreville Police Chief John Zebrowski on Saturday said “seven juveniles have been charged with juvenile delinquency arising from the attacks upon four victims in four separate incidents at Sayreville War Memorial High School.”
The statement said “three of the juveniles were charged with aggravated sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact, conspiracy to commit aggravated criminal sexual contact, criminal restraint and hazing for engaging in an act of sexual penetration upon one of the juvenile victims.”….
‘It’s rape’: Sayreville High School players face charges of abusive hazing  By Echo Chambers  22 October 2014  A small New Jersey town is reeling weeks after seven high-school varsity American football players were accused of charges ranging from hazing to aggravated sexual assault earlier this month.
According to the victims, seniors on the Sayreville War Memorial High School team would run into the locker room, turn the lights off, pin them to the floor and, at the very least, grab their buttocks. This allegedly happened on multiple occasions between 19 and 29 September.
Three of the players are facing more serious charges, including the sexual penetration of one victim. By calling sexual abuse hazing, society grants those perpetrators a free pass”

This may have been a orchestrated event. Four players would hold a victim on the floor while two were on lookout, one parent told after their son confided in them. One player would signal the start of the process with a howl, then turn off the lights and assault the freshman….
Michael Kasdan says there’s another word for what happened.
“It’s rape,” he writes for the Good Men Project. “Yes, it occurred as part of a football team hazing program, and it is boys acting against other boys, but – if the allegations are true – it is rape just the same.” Kasdan says that what happened in Sayreville was abuse, with the sexual aspect being another way to assert dominance. While the stories are disturbing, they are far from uncommon, says Robert Silverman of the Daily Beast. It’s a part of a larger issue across the country and at all levels of the sport….

FAMU Hazing History Allowed at Trial  Thursday, October 23, 2014  ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – A judge denied defense motions to drop manslaughter charges against four former Florida A & M band members facing trial next week for the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion….
Fifteen defendants were charged after Champion died following a hazing ritual aboard a band bus in November 2011…..

Florida hazing trial begins in college marching band death By Barbara Liston  ORLANDO Fla. Mon Oct 27, 2014  (Reuters) – Three years after the beating death of a Florida college band member brought national attention to its hazing rituals, the alleged ringleader of the abuse went on trial on Monday for manslaughter. ….a former member of the Florida A&M University’s celebrated “Marching 100” band, faces hazing charges for his role in the death of Robert Champion, a band drum major.
….Fourteen band members have faced charges for punching, kicking and striking Champion during a hazing ritual known as “Crossing Bus C.” Most received probation and community service in plea deals. Charges were dismissed against a fifteenth person….
Champion’s death was ruled a homicide by a medical examiner, who found he died of hemorrhagic shock resulting from blunt force trauma after running through a gauntlet of band members beating him on the darkened bus.
Champion had long refused to engage in the band’s hazing rituals, but ultimately decided to participate in what witnesses called an attempt to gain respect….

Witnesses: FAMU hazing suspect led ritual on bus Wednesday, October 29, 2014 ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Florida A&M band member being tried on hazing charges in the death of a drum major was the ring leader and decided who could participate in the initiation ritual, two former band members said Wednesday.
Former band member Lizette Sanchez testified that Dante Martin decided who was allowed to participate in the hazing ritual known as “crossing Bus C.” She said she initially decided she wasn’t going to take part her sophomore year in 2011, but changed her mind in an effort to end shunning from older band members who called her a “bad upperclassman” for not having done it.
“I felt like I was breaking a tradition,” Sanchez said.
She completed the ritual shortly before Robert Champion of Decatur, Georgia, went through it following a football game in November 2011. Champion died from injuries sustained during the ritual, which involved getting kicked, punched and hit with band instruments. Martin is charged with manslaughter and hazing in the incident….

Ex-FAMU band member convicted in hazing death By Crimesider Staff AP October 31, 2014  ORLANDO, Fla. – A jury has convicted a former Florida A&M University band member of manslaughter and felony hazing in the death of a drum major who prosecutors say was brutally beaten during a hazing ritual aboard a bus. The jury convicted 27-year-old Dante Martin Friday of Robert Champion’s death after deliberating for a short time. The charge carries a punishment of up to 15 years in prison. The 26-year-old Champion died almost three years ago in Orlando….
Prosecutors said Martin was the ringleader of the hazing. A medical examiner said Champion died of internal bleeding caused by severe bruising.

describes abuse  Former football player tells of the night he was allegedly raped by his teammate  By AISHA DOW Oct. 19, 2014
The burly young Victorian footballer sits hunched and crying in the bath as his mother scrubs frantically to remove the words “whore” and “slut”, which have been scrawled upon his naked body in lipstick.
It has been years since Ben, 21, has cried. But today the tears wiggle down his face and into the stained bathwater, as the Warrandyte seconds player heaves and sobs like a child.
The night before the biological science student had been staying at a teammate’s house when he says he was repeatedly attacked by a group of older players….
Australian experts believe that male-to-male abuse within sporting clubs could be as prevalent as in other masculine environments, such as the military, where crimes have been well documented….
Sexual assaults linked to team bonding also regularly make headlines in the United States. In Vermont, high school football players reportedly sexually assaulted younger players with broomsticks or pool cues.
Australian research has shown that only about 35 per cent of recent sexual assault victims report the crime to police. Ms Worth said the proportion of silent victims could be even higher for male victims assaulted by their sporting teammates.

Men who have been raped typically stayed silent, Ms Worth says, because they feel humiliated and worried what people will think of them.  “Then there’s the perception that this is not something that happens to ‘real blokes’ – it happens to girls.”
Yet, Dr Michael Flood, an expert in gender issues, says there has been a long history of men being “initiated” into workplaces through practices that involve peoples’ genitals or bodies. Dr Flood, who has worked on studies for the AFL, said sometimes these rituals slide into sexual assault.
The term “hazing” is most often used to describe college initiations in the United States, he says. In Australia and the Australian Defence Force in particular, acts commonly involving “physically stressful and ritualistic practices”  have been better known as bastardisation….

Male sexual assault expert Sarah Crome says men who had been sexually assaulted as adults tend to experience similar effects as female survivors, including psychiatric disorders and relationship and behavioural problems.
“Self harming and compulsive behaviour including self-mutilation, reckless behaviour like driving dangerously, drug and alcohol abuse and work addiction are widespread complaints. Suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts are not uncommon,” she says.
Dr Flood said men who had been sexually abused in hazing rituals were also likely to be dealing with some distinct troubles.  “Being assaulted by peers as part of behaviour that is semi-public and condoned would add to the trauma and distress of the experience,” he said….

Campus nightmare: female students on the rise of sexual harassment
Photographed in their beds, shamed on social media – and, for some female students, that’s just the beginning. So what are British universities doing about sexual harassment and assaults?
Sally Williams The Guardian, Friday 10 October 2014
….The extent of sexual assaults on British campuses emerged four years ago when the NUS published Hidden Marks: A Study Of Women Students’ Experiences Of Harassment, Stalking, Violence And Sexual Assault. One in seven respondents had experienced some form of serious physical or sexual assault, the report stated, and more than two-thirds had experienced some kind of verbal or nonverbal harassment in or around university. (The latest NUS survey revealed that 37% of women and 12% of men who responded said they had faced unwelcome sexual advances.) Being groped, having someone put their hand up your skirt at a club and sexual comments were so ubiquitous, the NUS concluded, they were almost a fact of life.
A report last year, by the Ministry of Justice, the Home Office and the Office for National Statistics, stated that female students in full-time education are at higher risk of sexual violence than the general female population. A particularly hazardous time, experts believe, is freshers’ week, when newcomers are invited to a raft of social events. “They are extremely vulnerable,” says Dr Alison Phipps, director of gender studies at Sussex University and coauthor of That’s What She Said, a 2013 report on women students’ experience in higher education. “Some of them are away from home for the first time, are trying to make friends and don’t know the campus, don’t know the city.”….

Hidden Marks
A study of women students’ experiences of harassment, stalking, violence and sexual assault
Welcome to Hidden Marks, the first ever nationwide report into women students’ experience of harassment,
stalking, violence and sexual assault. We decided to undertake this research because women
aged 16–24 have a higher risk of experiencing domestic violence, but there appeared to be little awareness of this amongst students. We wanted to find out from women students themselves about their
experiences. We wanted to understand what was happening on campus, in halls of residences, and in
students’ unions, and we wanted to hear how women students felt about it.
In this report we provide a snapshot of the harassment and violence that a national sample of women students have faced whilst they have been at their current institution. The picture that we have revealed is disturbing. 14 per cent have experienced serious physical or sexual assault. 68 per cent have been subject to verbal or physical sexual harassment. Nearly one in four has experienced unwanted sexual contact.

NUS research reveals one in four students suffer unwelcome sexual advances Monday 15 September 2014
NUS President, Toni Pearce today called on UK universities to join NUS in its work on tackling lad culture on UK campuses. The call comes as new research reveals that one in four students (26 per cent) have suffered unwelcome sexual advances, defined as inappropriate touching and groping.
More than a third of women students (37 per cent) said they had faced unwelcome sexual advances.
In the survey of over 2,000 men and women students almost one third of respondents said they endure unwanted sexual comments about their body (12 per cent of men, 37 per cent of women).
Two thirds of respondents said they have seen students put up with unwanted sexual comments, with just under one third bearing witness to verbal harassment based on a student’s gender.
75 per cent of students are aware of online communities such as ‘Unilad’ and ‘Lad Bible’ with almost two thirds of women students (63 per cent) agreeing that these contribute to an unfair representation of women….
Child Abuse and Trauma Issues

‘7th Heaven’ actor reportedly under investigation for child abuse  By Mark Shanahan and Meredith Goldstein
Globe Staff   October 07, 2014 Actor Stephen Collins, who played the Rev. Eric Camden on the long-running WB family show “7th Heaven,” is reportedly under investigation for child molestation after an alleged recording surfaced of him confessing in couples therapy to exposing himself to young girls and molesting an 11-year-old, according to TMZ and the New York Daily News. (TMZ has posted the alleged audio on its website. The Daily News reports an NYPD investigation has been confirmed with an unnamed department source.)

Stephen Collins  Network Yanks ‘7th Heaven’ From Schedule 10/7/2014 BY TMZ STAFF
Stephen Collins’ confession he molested young girls is already causing collateral damage … episodes of his most famous TV show, “7th Heaven” are being yanked off the air.
A rep for TV Guide Network — which airs re-runs of the show — tells TMZ the two episodes remaining on the schedule will not air — nor will any future episodes of “7th Heaven.”
We’re told … programming honchos dropped the hammer on the show … after seeing our story that Collins was recorded during a therapy session … confessing to acts of molestation years ago….

7th Heaven’ Dad Stephen Collins Confesses on tape to Child Molestation NYPD Investigating [AUDIO]
10/7/2014 BY TMZ STAFF EXCLUSIVE  Stephen Collins — who played the pastor/dad on “7th Heaven” — confessed to his estranged wife he was a child molester, and it’s all on tape … a tape obtained by TMZ. And the New York Police Dept. is now conducting an active criminal investigation involving sexual contact with multiple children.
Collins — who is in the middle of a nasty, prolonged divorce with actress Faye Grant — revealed to her in 2012 he had molested and/or exposed himself to several underage girls years before. Collins and Grant went to a therapist where she peppered him with questions about the incidents … and he not only answered, he was specific.
Here’s what Collins didn’t know at the time. Grant taped the therapy session. We’re told her lawyer advised her it was legal to secretly record the conversation because in California you’re allowed to secretly record conversations to gather evidence the other person committed a violent felony … and molesting a child under the age of 14 qualifies…. TMZ has learned … the NYPD is in possession of the tape, and last Wednesday 2 NYPD detectives from the Special Victims Unit flew to L.A. to interview Grant. We’re told they asked her about the tape and about other potential witnesses….

Stephen Collins  L.A. County Sheriff Investigates Sex Crime Victim Comes Forward 10/15/2014  BY TMZ STAFF Stephen Collins is now under investigation by a third law enforcement agency for allegedly molesting and/or exposing himself to young girls … TMZ has confirmed … and the victim herself is the one who came forward to make the complaint. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … the woman was 13 at the time and she has now gone to law investigators with her allegations. Our sources say … the incident involves a relative of a neighbor when Collins lived on Havenhurst Drive in West Hollywood during the summer of 1983. Collins confesses to exposing himself to the girl on the audio tape posted on TMZ last week. We redacted her name and address.   Collins also says on the audio … he went back to the victim and “made amends” years later….

Stephen Collins  Cops Looking to Find 3rd Sexual Abuse Victim  10/16/2014 PDT BY TMZ STAFF The mystery girl who Stephen Collins admitted he sexually abused was a babysitter for the actor’s daughter … and we know cops are on the hunt for her. TMZ broke the story … Collins confessed on audio that he molested or exposed himself to 3 girls. Two of them have come forward … one has gone to the NYPD and another to the L.A. County Sheriff. NYPD detectives know the 3rd victim was sexually abused in NYC and they now know who she is and are trying to track her down. TMZ has learned … the woman was around 13 when she babysat Collins’ daughter 18 years ago. Collins’ wife, Faye Grant, told cops Collins admitted to her he would repeatedly drive with the babysitter in the front seat with their 6-year-old daughter in the back seat and expose….

Don’t turn a blind eye to child abuse or neglect By Yvonne Abraham Globe Columnist   September 21, 2014  How is it possible that Erika Murray’s oldest children went to school, had friends, and saw relatives, yet nobody raised the alarm about the horrors filling their Blackstone home?….
It all went to hell the summer before Spadaro turned 11, when she found her mother on the floor, in seizures. Doctors removed a brain tumor, leaving her mother with impaired judgment and impulse control, and dependent on sedatives. Her father, who had broken his hip and quit work years earlier, was also heavily medicated. Depressed, and with strained finances, her parents mixed alcohol with the drugs, descending into addiction.
The girls were on their own. Laundry piled up, as did dishes, garbage, and pet feces….
“That combination of the unwashed people and the unwashed pets and the food that may be halfway round the bend,” recalled Spadaro, now 48. “You learn to function with the smell, but I don’t think you ever stop noticing it.”

She did what many kids do in these situations: She became the parent, at 11. She remembers trying to clear some of the mess away, hauling trash to the garage, and cleaning up after the beagle. For meals, she warmed frozen pizza in a toaster oven. She did laundry so that she and her sister — several years younger — would look presentable.
“I tried to keep things as best I could, but I could not be in charge of two parents, a younger sibling, and the pet,” she said.
For three years, none of the many adults in their lives came to their rescue….
Three years after the spiral began, her mother’s family took the girls in. Spadaro does not know why they decided to intervene then, and not sooner….
Several times, though, neighbors complained about pets being mistreated at the home. There was only one call about the children, found to be unsubstantiated. How those kids must have envied the dogs…..

National household survey of adverse childhood experiences and their relationship with resilience to health-harming behaviors in England  Mark A Bellis, Karen Hughes, Nicola Leckenby, Clare Perkins and Helen Lowey    BMC Medicine 2014, 12:72  doi:10.1186/1741-7015-12-72
Almost half (47%) of individuals experienced at least one of the nine ACEs. Prevalence of childhood sexual, physical, and verbal abuse was 6.3%, 14.8%, and 18.2% respectively (population-adjusted). After correcting for sociodemographics, ACE counts predicted all HHBs, e.g. (0 versus 4+ ACEs, adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals)): smoking 3.29 (2.54 to 4.27); violence perpetration 7.71 (4.90 to 12.14); unintended teenage pregnancy 5.86 (3.93 to 8.74). Modeling suggested that 11.9% of binge drinking, 13.6% of poor diet, 22.7% of smoking, 52.0% of violence perpetration, 58.7% of heroin/crack cocaine use, and 37.6% of unintended teenage pregnancy prevalence nationally could be attributed to ACEs….
Neurobiological studies have already identified changes to the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex associated with ACEs, while epigenetic studies are exposing gene-environment interactions with negative health consequences once exposed to stressors.

Adverse childhood experiences, allostasis, allostatic load, and age-related disease
Andrea Danese  Bruce S. McEwen  DOI: 10.1016/j.physbeh.2011.08.019 Physiology & Behavior
Volume 106, Issue 1, 12 April 2012, Pages 29–39 Allostasis and Allostatic Load
How do adverse childhood experiences get ‘under the skin’ and influence health outcomes through the life-course? Research reviewed here suggests that adverse childhood experiences are associated with changes in biological systems responsible for maintaining physiological stability through environmental changes, or allostasis. Children exposed to maltreatment showed smaller volume of the prefrontal cortex, greater activation of the HPA axis, and elevation in inflammation levels compared to non-maltreated children. Adults with a history of childhood maltreatment showed smaller volume of the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, greater activation of the HPA axis, and elevation in inflammation levels compared to non-maltreated individuals. Despite the clear limitations in making longitudinal claims from cross-sectional studies, work so far suggests that adverse childhood experiences are associated with enduring changes in the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. These changes are already observable in childhood years and remain apparent in adult life. Adverse childhood experiences induce significant biological changes in children (biological embedding), modifying the maturation and the operating balance of allostatic systems. Their chronic activation can lead to progressive wear and tear, or allostatic load and overload, and, thus, can exert long-term effects on biological aging and health.
We reviewed the physiological correlates of adverse childhood experiences. We examined the effects on the nervous, the endocrine, and the immune systems. These systems are abnormally active in maltreated children and adults. These effects may be adaptive in the short term but subsequently become detrimental. These effects may explain why maltreated individuals are at greater risk of disease.

Victims of Domestic Violence Getting Longer Prison Sentences Than Their Children’s Abusers?
Sunday, 26 October 2014 By Alyssa Figueroa, AlterNet | Report
….Lindley’s story was reported in a Buzzfeed news investigation which exposed the dangerous outcomes of these “failure to protect” laws.  Buzzfeed found 28 mothers and domestic violence victims in 11 states who were sent to prison for at least 10 years for failing to protect their children from abuse:
“Almost half, 13 mothers, were given 20 years or more. In one case, the mother was given a life sentence for failing to protect her son, just like the man who murdered the infant boy. In another, the sentences were effectively the same: The killer got life, and the mother got75 years, of which she must serve at least 63 years and nine months. In yet another, the mother got a longer sentence than the man who raped her son. In one more, a father fractured an infant girl’s toe, femur, and seven ribs and was sentenced to two years; for failing to intervene, the mother got 30.”

Buzzfeed found that at least 29 states have failure-to-protect laws, such as injury to a child “by omission,” by “permitting child abuse” or “enabling child abuse.” Nineteen other states have laws that could also be used to prosecute parents, such as “criminal negligence in the care of a child.” Maximum prison sentences for breaking these laws vary from one year to life. And in some states, they carry the same sentence as child abuse itself.
While these laws are designed to both hold mother and father responsible for protecting their children, the law isn’t applied equally. Buzzfeed found a total 73 cases against mothers, yet only four against fathers. Women commit 34 percent of serious or fatal cases of child abuse.
“Mothers are held to a very different standard,” law professor Kris McDaniel-Miccio said. …

Japanese Wartime Medical Orderly on Army’s Role in Maintaining “Comfort Women” System
Sunday, 26 October 2014 By David McNeill, The Asia-Pacific Journal | Interview and Video
David McNeill introduction, Matsumoto Masayoshi testimony (Japanese and English transcript and video of testimony), translation by Miguel Quintana.
For years, Abe Shinzo, Japan’s prime minister, has been playing with diplomatic fire over a sordid episode of wartime history that has been at the center of a storm of controversy involving Japan, China, Korea and other outposts of Japan’s empire: the herding of thousands of women across Asia into Japanese military brothels. His decision this year to order an investigation into a landmark government apology to the so-called “comfort women” might have helped end the controversy. Instead, it has further ignited it, which may indeed have been Abe’s intention – he has campaigned for nearly two decades to undermine the apology.
The 1993 Kono statement, compiled in consultation with South Korea by Japan’s then chief cabinet secretary Kono Yohei, acknowledged the army’s role in forcing the women into sexual slavery. Nationalists, championed by the Yomiuri, Japan’s most popular newspaper, deny coercion and insist the women voluntarily provided “comfort” to frontline troops. They have repeatedly demanded the withdrawal of the so-called Kono statement, with potentially explosive diplomatic consequences….

Cathy Young’s Junk Science  October 28, 2014  I do not respond to personal attacks; smearing the messenger is a tactic that speaks for itself….  According to Ms. Young, who dismisses virtually all medical evidence of sexual abuse: “It is now known that anal and genital inflammations and lacerations in young children, once believed to be clear signs of sexual abuse, also occur frequently in kids who were not abused.” There is no scientific basis for the claim that genital lacerations occur frequently in non-abused children. Quite the contrary. According to a recent article in Best Practice & Research Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology:
Hepenstall-Heger et al. reported lacerations in prepubertal girls in both penile and digital penetration, but none were found in girls experiencing saddle injuries. Myhre et al. found no lacerations in non-abused 5- and 6-year-old girls. (Price, p. 134).
….Lacerations in children’s genitals are rare, not frequent, and controlled studies conclude that they are not found in non-abused children. Lacerations are “wounds made by tearing” (Heger, Emans, and Muram, p. 242). Acknowledging that fact, of course, requires one to acknowledge that there was solid medical evidence in the Keller case. See, Jean Price, “Injuries in prepubertal and pubertal girls,” Best Practice & Research Clinical Obsteretric and Gynaecology 27 (2013): 131-139.

When the Mind Splits   Dissociative identity disorder affects millions of people, most of whom are former child abuse victims. Why do some psychologists doubt that the condition even exists? By Sam Levin
….I met Elyse a few weeks after she sent me an email, stating that she has was trying to find a journalist to help her raise awareness about dissociative identity disorder, or DID (pronounced D-I-D), a misunderstood and stigmatized condition that is far more common than most people realize. Elyse was officially diagnosed with DID two years ago at Stanford University Medical Center, but she said she has had the condition for much longer.
“The majority of the public knows little to no correct information about DID, and even those in the professional field of psychology debate whether or not this disorder is even real,” Elyse wrote to me over the summer. “But it is. It is very, very real, and so I am working hard to spread awareness.”
Research has increasingly demonstrated that DID is a trauma-based disorder that typically emerges among people who have experienced childhood sexual or physical abuse. Dissociation occurs when people mentally detach themselves from their surroundings, a common coping mechanism for a child victim of abuse. When the abuse continues over a period of time, that dissociation can become extreme and lead the victim to develop distinct, dissociated parts of himself or herself that exist to withstand the abuse.
Experts on DID say that roughly 1 percent of the population suffers from the condition, making it as common as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.
….Every year, child protective service agencies in the United States receive more than 3 million reports of child abuse. In 2012, there were nearly 63,000 documented cases of child sexual abuse, according to US Department of Health and Human Services data. And experts believe that the number of cases reported and investigated represents just a small fraction of the abuse and trauma that children suffer across the country.
“When they are reported, they are not dealt with well,” said David Spiegel, associate chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine and an expert on dissociative identity disorder. Some research has suggested that two-thirds of child trauma cases aren’t reported, he said. “These children have to live with it. How do you live with it? … You act as though it isn’t happening or it’s happening to somebody else that isn’t you.”

Cases involving the most severe and disturbing trauma — prolonged physical and sexual abuse by parents, other family members, or caregivers — are especially likely to go unreported. And so children in these cases develop their own ways to survive. “You can’t run away. You can’t fight it, so you go away in your head,” explained Bethany Brand, a clinical psychologist and professor of psychology at Towson University in Maryland, who recently completed the world’s largest study on the treatment of dissociative disorders. “That makes it easier to disconnect from the body in pain.”
When a young mind repeatedly enters these dissociative states in response to ongoing abuse, the coping mechanism can evolve into DID. “It’s an interesting paradox of sort of breaking apart, so that you don’t break,” explained Janelle Salah, a Berkeley-based therapist who treats DID patients.
….A 2006 Journal of Psychiatric Research study concluded that 1.5 percent of the general population has DID. And a 2011 epidemiological overview of DID studies — which stated that “dissociative disorders constitute a hidden and neglected public health problem” — said the disorder exists in 0.4 to 3.1 percent of the general population, and in roughly 5 percent of psychiatric patients. That study also stated that dissociative patients are more likely to report childhood psychological trauma than people suffering from any other psychiatric disorder.

When The Mind Splits: Processing Dissociative Identity Disorder Through Art by Sam Levin
In this week’s cover story, I profiled Elyse Winter-Volkova, a 21-year-old San Leandro woman who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, the condition formerly known as multiple personality disorder. Experts believe the disorder, also known as DID, affects roughly 1 percent of the population and most often emerges in people who have experienced severe childhood trauma, typically prolonged physical or sexual abuse. One of the leading DID experts featured in my story is Bethany Brand, a professor of psychology at Towson University in Maryland, who conducted the world’s largest study on the treatment of dissociative disorders. In addition to discussing her extensive research with me, Brand helped connect me to two women in Maryland who also have DID…..
DID most often develops as a highly complex coping mechanism in the face of intense abuse and trauma, meaning a child mentally detaches from his or her surroundings, and eventually develops distinct, dissociated parts (or personalities) that exist to withstand the abuse. The challenge for people living with DID is to develop a functional system of communication between different personalities or identities (sometimes called “alters”), with some sufferers working toward “integration” — that is, the fusion of different identities into one. While integration is not always the ultimate goal for people with DID, Elise told me that she is working toward integration — an incredibly difficult process of trying to merge different parts of herself that carry different memories and perspective on her past abuse. “I would like to come back together as much as possible,” she said….

When the Mind Splits from East Bay Express
Elyse Winter-Volkova has been diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, but instead of hiding it, she openly talks about her condition online, with the people in her life, and as a guest lecturer in college psychology classes. She hopes to raise awareness and advocate for greater acceptance of people with mental illnesses.

Dissociative identity disorder (formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder or MPD) is defined in the DSM-IV-TR as the presence of two or more personality states or distinct identities that repeatedly take control of one’s behavior. The patient has an inability to recall personal information. The extent of this lack of recall is too great to be explained by normal forgetfulness. The disorder cannot be due to the direct physical effects of a general medical condition or substance.

American Psychiatric Association
Response to Frances Commentary on DSM-V 6/29/2009
The commentary “A Warning Sign on the Road to DSM-5: Beware of its Unintended Consequences” by Allen Frances, M.D., submitted to Psychiatric Times contains factual errors and assumptions about the development of DSM-V that cannot go unchallenged. Frances now joins a group of individuals, many involved in development of previous editions of DSM, including Dr. Robert Spitzer, who repeat the same accusations about DSM-V with disregard for the facts.
The facts are:
The process for developing DSM-V has been the most open and inclusive ever. The process began with a planning session that led to 13 NIH-supported international research conferences and a series of monographs….
“Confidentiality agreements” Frances and his colleagues cite as evidence of secrecy around DSM-V are in reality legal documents designed to protect intellectual property. Attorneys for the APA worked with the DSM-V Task Force and Work Groups to develop these agreements to protect the work product of these volunteers. As a matter of  practice, these agreements have clearly not inhibited free discussion….

The DSM-V development process is scientific, and it contains the same elements as the DSM-IV process described by Dr. Frances, including literature reviews, secondary data analyses, and field trials. This is in addition to the comprehensive pre-revision scientific review conferences. A key difference in the DSM-V process versus the DSM-IV process is that our focus is not on keeping things as they are but instead on determining what is working with the current DSM, what is not working, and determining how to correct what is not working….
The DSM-III categorical diagnoses with operational criteria were a major advance for our field, but they are now holding us back because the system has not kept up with current thinking. Clinicians complain that the current DSM-I V system poorly reflects the clinical realities of their patients. Researchers are skeptical that the existing DSM categories represent a valid basis for scientific investigations, and accumulating evidence supports this skepticism. Science has advanced, treatments have advanced, and clinical practice has advanced since Dr. Frances’ work on DSM-IV. The DSM will become irrelevant if it does not change to reflect these advances.
Finally, Dr. Frances opened his commentary with the statement, “We should begin with full disclosure.” It is unfortunate that Dr. Frances failed to take this statement to heart when he did not disclose his continued financial interests in several publications based on DSM-IV. Only with this information could the reader make a full assessment of his critiques of a new and different DSM-V. Both Dr. Frances and Dr. Spitzer have more than a personal “pride of authorship” interest in preserving the DSM-IV and its related case book and study products. Both continue to receive royalties on DSM-IV associated products. The fact that Dr. Frances was informed at the APA Annual Meeting last month that subsequent editions of his DSM-IV associated products would cease when the new edition is finalized, should be considered when evaluating his critique and its timing.

One Woman Tells Us What It’s Like To Be Raped — And Have Your Town Turn Against You
‘There were flyers at school, kids wore T-shirts in his honor and even brought huge signs to his court appearances supporting him.’  by MTV News Staff  11/11/2014
Sixty percent of rapes go unreported to the police. But what’s it like to be part of that other 40% — and then have your community and friends turn against you? Emma Hanrahan knows only too well — and today she’s coming forward to share her story of pain and survival with MTV News, in the hopes that it will encourage that 60% to break the silence….
By Emma Hanrahan
….Almost immediately after entering the room I was pushed on the bed, and all of a sudden it went from being fun to being completely terrifying. I was dizzy and confused. Paris was on top of me. I said, “Slow down, I don’t want to do this. I want to go home.”
The moment they ignored me and kept going was the moment I knew exactly what was about to happen. One of the other guys was standing right by my head and I remember looking up and seeing the third guy standing at the door, almost like he was keeping watch.
Was this planned? How did everything fall into place so quickly? All of a sudden my pants were ripped right off me and Paris immediately started having sex with me. I was crying “No” over and over again.
….It was hard for me. I found peace many nights at the bottom of a cheap bottle of wine. My confusion and loss of self consumed me, while flashbacks and nightmares became a ritual in my already messed-up schedule. I had uncontrollable panic attacks that caused me to rarely leave the house. I spent many long days in my room not talking to many people at all.

The rape kit result came back and DNA was found, enough to at least make an arrest on Paris in the winter. Despite changing his statements drastically a few times, though, he gained the support from a majority of the school — and town for that matter. The school didn’t feel it was necessary to remove Paris or the other guys from their classes — even after the arrest. I couldn’t bear the thought of attending class every day sitting next to the guys that raped me, that broke me, that took everything from me, so I withdrew from school after only a couple of weeks.
….In the meantime, the town started taking sides — everyone did. These guys were star athletes — basketball players — and it seemed like everyone supported them. It didn’t take long for the blame to be put on me. The basketball coach even confronted me at a game once with his players in tow — including two of my attackers — and as a result I was thrown out of the game. And banned from campus.
People I thought were my friends dropped me in a second to jump on the “FREE PARIS” bandwagon — including some of my former roommates. There were flyers at school, kids wore T-shirts in his honor and even brought huge signs to his court appearances supporting him.
It drew attention from the local newspaper and radio stations, and people even wrote letters to the editor voicing their support for this man who took my entire life from me. Everywhere I turned “FREE PARIS” punched me right in the gut. I received threatening text messages from players and people I didn’t even know. I was harassed walking down the street; there are still blogs about me on the Internet created by students just to say awful and hateful things about me.
That’s the issue with how society as a whole thinks about sexual assault: They blame the victim. They blamed me. I was at a party. I was drinking. I was wearing a tank top. I was asking for it. Hearing those things over and over again –- you start to believe them. So many people told me that I was a slut. That I wanted it. It was really hard to not feel that way. I think that that just confirms that how people think of sexual assault and how they treat victims of a crime is backwards. We need to stop blaming the victims and start blaming their attackers.

….I got to the point where I was in such a dark place with my memories and my community’s nastiness that I had to try to put the whole thing behind me. I offered “Paris” a plea and he took it, and because he was arrested he lost his visa and was sent back home and not allowed to return. The other two guys were never arrested; “Paris” claimed they were never even with us.
….The harassment continued for years, despite letting Paris off easy. The next few years went by filled with unbearable pain and emptiness all at the same time. The only thing that helped me pull myself out of that place was talking to people in the same situation as me. I hooked up with the RAINN organization. I read other people’s stories — people who had gone through what I had and come out on the other side OK. People who told me that there was a life past everything I was enduring then.
….One of the reasons that I stopped feeling the way that I did was because I ran across another girl at college a few years later that was going through what I went through. I told her my story and about how I was better then than I had been before and that made her feel better. And it made me feel better that she felt better. Helping other people and guiding them –- that was the only way that I felt better.
What happened to me may have changed me, but who I am today is someone I am proud to be. I WAS a victim — now I’m a survivor, a mother, a fighter and an inspiration. I am strong.
